[Bug 755379] Re: grub.conf contains incorrect host device when root device is a loopback file

2011-04-09 Thread Eugene San
Issue was discovered in Alpha3 and I suppose existed also in Beta1.
But I can't be sure, since I was blindly patching grub-mkconfig_lib since then.

Currently (1.99~rc1-8ubuntu2) grun.conf generated perfectly.
I suppose issues fixed somewhere in between.

Sorry for wasted time, I was supposed to test an updated version.

2011-05-09 Thread Eugene San
Issue affects any white-listed systray icon.
Both unity and classic-gnome are affected.

Restarted session without reboot, usually is ok.
I guess applications startup timings are to blame for randomization effect.

Actually icon is there, but only most right(or left) 1 pixel column is shown.
It's hardly discoverable, but clickable and working.

Correct for both gnome and unity panels.

Also, totally randomly, icon appears fully.

[Bug 665785] Re: Support for zram (Linux 2.6.36) and ramzswap(2.6.35) is missing

2011-06-12 Thread Eugene San
Hi,

I've re-based my modifications to initramfs-tools-0.98.8ubuntu3
Now it supports:
* ramzswap for Linux 2.6.32
* ramzswap for Linux 2.6.35
* zram for Linux 2.6.38
Maybe also versions in the middle.

Colin:
Your attempt to avoid creation of dynamic initramfs script wasn't successful
since udev do not support quotation inside RUN command.

[Bug 763463] Re: [i865] Xorg freeze (IPEHR: 0x02000011)

2011-04-23 Thread Eugene San
Similar here, Lenovo T61:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960
Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 0c)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated
Graphics Controller (secondary) (rev 0c)

To reconstruct:
1) Start Normal Unity or Gnome session
2) Set screensaver to blank in 1 minute.
3) Put Flash video in firefox
4) Once screen goes blank, immediately wake it with mouse movement.
5) Screen redrawn with last frame before going black (Last frame of full screen
video for example).
6) Session is dead:
 * Mouse cursor moves.
 * No feedback from mouse or keyboard.
 * No sound.
 * VTs 1-6 works fine, all applications in sessions seems to be alive.

After restarting GDM, everything fine.

Might be related to suspend/resume, can't recall this happening before
first suspend/resume cycle.

[Bug 826399] [NEW] [natty][regression-proposed] iwlagn driver is very unstable and stops working at some point

2011-08-14 Thread Eugene San
Public bug reported:

iwlagn (running on Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN, REV=0x4) became
very unstable after upgrade from linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic-pae
2.6.38-11.47 to 2.6.38-11.48

Reverting to 2.6.38.10.25 solves the issue.
I am pretty sure regression came from 47-48, but since 2.6.38-11.47 is no more
available, I am can't be 100% sure.

Usually driver starts hanging for few seconds/minutes and later stops
working at all (NetworkManager looses it)

[Bug 826399] Re: [natty][regression-proposed] iwlagn driver is very unstable and stops working at some point

2011-08-15 Thread Eugene San
** Description changed:

iwlagn (running on Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN, REV=0x4) became
very unstable after upgrade from linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic-pae
  2.6.38-11.47 to 2.6.38-11.48

Reverting to 2.6.38.10.25 solves the issue.
- I am pretty sure regression came from 47-48, but since 2.6.38-11.47 is no
more available, I am can't be 100% sure.
+ I am pretty sure regression came from 47-48, but since 2.6.38-11.47 is no
more available, I can't be 100% sure.

Usually driver starts hanging for few seconds/minutes and later stops
working at all (NetworkManager looses it)

Try to use sessions without compiz (no effects) or simply uninstall compiz.
In my case this solved all stability issues.

[Bug 706795] Re: [All releases] Suspending with rootfs on USB, cause silent corruptions cause kernel panic on mount attempt, data loss and making system unbootable.

2011-01-30 Thread Eugene San
Hi all,

Update:
1) Corruptions are always there when suspending rootfs on USB.
2) Corruptions are silent, FS marked as clean, that's what causes Kernel panic
when it tries to mount corrupted FS marked as clean.
3) Issue caused probably by partially synced disk cache.
4) All tested Kernels affected (Lucid, Maverick, Natty, Natty-Mainline-Daily,
Fedora14, Redhat6).
5) Kernels above 2.6.38 manages to mark FS as dirty during failed mount
attempt, so virtually corruption got fixed after 2 reboots but loss is there.
6) Bug affects all filesystems, but severe for EXT4(data loss but fixable with
another system without automount) and BTRFS (unfixable due to failed mounttime
fixes and there is no way to fix manually).

** Summary changed:

- [All releases] Suspending with rootfs (mainly ext4) on USB, cause silent
corruptions which panics kernel on mount attempt. Making system unbootable.
+ [All releases] Suspending with rootfs on USB, cause silent corruptions cause

** Summary changed:

kernel panic on mount attempt, data loss and making system unbootable.
+ [All releases] Suspending with rootfs on USB, causes silent corruptions,
kernel panic on mount attempt, data loss and leaving system unbootable.

[Bug 706795] Re: [All releases] Suspending with rootfs on USB, causes silent corruptions, kernel panic on mount attempt, data loss and leaving system unbootable.

2011-01-30 Thread Eugene San
Attaching failed suspend-resume log.

Comments:
1) Unrecoverable read error reported, but device is fully readable when tested
manually few seconds later. Device probably needs more time to settle, maybe
analog of rootdelay= is required for resume?
2) Corruption exists also when no resume procedure executed (by manually
ejecting device or system hard reset).
3) Kernel suspected to mess with VFS/USB suspending orders or by not providing
enough time for USB device to commit data physically before
suspend/reseting/turning-off USB host, after sync.
4) Several USB storage devices were tested, they all fail.

[Bug 706795] Re: [All releases] Suspending with rootfs on USB, causes silent corruptions, kernel panic on mount attempt, data loss and leaving system unbootable.

2011-01-30 Thread Eugene San
** Description changed:

- Terminated suspend causes ext4 corruptions which crashes kernel on mount
- attempt.
+ Suspend of root filesystem on USB, causes FS corruptions which crashes
+ kernel on mount attempt and making systen unbootable.

- Affects Karmic, Lucid, Maverick and probably Natty.
- Valid for any combinations, for example : Suspend Lucid system - Poweroff
(hard) Lucid system - Connect Lucid's ext4 to Maverick system - Observe Crash
+ Affects Karmic, Lucid, Maverick and Natty.

- Actually report describes two severe issues.
+ Reconstruction:
+ ---
+ a) Install any Ubuntu release on USB drive.
+ b) Boot into user session (preferably with ecryptfs enabled, which raises
probably to almost always)
+ c) Suspend
+ d) Variant1: Resume - Observer FS inconsistence and inability to continue
operation with rootfs.
+ Afer hard reset (system unable to reboot/shutdown normally with
readonly rootfs) the system is unable to boot due silently corrupted FS.
+Variant2: Eject device - Try to mount it on any Ubuntu release - Observe

[Bug 536639] Re: unable to send fax

2010-05-07 Thread Eugene San
New version of efax-gtk now replaces efax (now part of efax-gtk).
Original efax has legal issues and probably will be renamed.

As for me, efax should be considered as superseded by efax-gtk.
I've packaged new version in https://launchpad.net/~eugenesan/+archive/ppa

Hope maintainers will adopt it.

[Bug 512200] Re: Lucid fails to host and to be hosted using LXC/OpenVZ containers

2010-04-28 Thread Eugene San
I suppose we should be discussing LXC support in current Lucid's Linux
and upcoming OpenVZ support in 2.6.32 which probably will be ported to
Lucid (officially or not) very soon.

And what Better virtualisation technologies are? KVM? Xen?
They are totally different beasts.

There is no permanent workaround, for example installing package with
dependency for udev will ruin the VPS.

New init scheme is the reason for inability to boot under containers.
Upstart is major player here, and developers, with all due respect, can't just
ignore the situation they created.

I am really happy to see my Laptop booting Lucid under 30sec, but I also have
much more of virtualized instances.
Do you aware of how many Ubuntu insances are running inside containers? My
guess is close to a million.
And what do you think people will do, after realizing they can't
upgrade/install?
Definitely not praising Canonical.

I really hope Canonical will not endorse such a nonchalance.

[Bug 424749] Re: [i945GM] KMS kills DVI port

2009-09-13 Thread Eugene San
Confirming.
Issue appeared with KMS introduction and temporary gone until 2.6.31-6
(including).
Later versions (2.6.31-7 till 2.6.31-10) required nomodeset or i915.modeset=0
to boot normally.
In my case, I suspect system never passed initrd stage since there is no
response from network and keyboard, and there is no other console to debug it
:-(

On other hand there is no issue on Atom based PC with same GPU.
I am adding lspci of working system Hope that will help.

[Bug 561140] Re: Boot hangs after update to kernel 2.6.32-20

2010-04-12 Thread Eugene San
Linux actually panics and print trace and never reaches root mount.

Previous observation might be incorrect since Linux continues to handle
events (as SCSI and USB insertions) while scrollling trace output.

I can observe only tail of trace:
EIP: is at acpi_ex_read_data_from_field+0x131/0x168 SS:ESP 0068:f70ddd70

With acpi=off there is no trace or panic, boot progress a little more
but dies later, maybe because I I boot from USB :-(

[Bug 538100] Re: Linux fails to read GPT(EFI) partition table created by both GNU parted and OSX diskutil

2010-03-16 Thread Eugene San
I can't think of any authoritative contact.
Anyway, If existence of MBR (at least protective MBR) is vital part of GPT/EFI
specification then it's ok for Linux to demand it.
Linux could just ignore absence of MBR in GPT, but we can't treat its behavior
as bug.

[Bug 538100] Re: Linux fails to read GPT(EFI) partition table created by both GNU parted and OSX diskutil

2010-03-17 Thread Eugene San
Results of testing on Mac:
  * parted do not create MBR when empty GPT is created.
  * ubiquity:
 a) When starting from empty GPT and creating partitions on GPT it creates
synced MBR, but Linux then reads MBR instead of GPT.
 b) Created by ubiquity partitions created without alignment. Only last
partition created with some spare space at end of device, while OSX Disk
utility does insert holes and parted refuses to create without holes.
 c) When editing attributes of existing partitions it behaves normally, but
only if partitions layout was created previously by ubuquty and synced to MBR
using parted. In that case ubiquity do not destroy MBR.
 d) When starting with correct GPT (prepared by gparted or OSX Disk
Utility), ubiquity converts holes in between first 3 partitions, to partitions
in MBR.

Unfortunately ubiquity crashed few times and it's partitioning behavior
was too hard to catch, so there were no useful/sequential logs to
provide.

In additiion I would like get help with definition of bugs, for two issues I
have found while testing:
  * ubiquity do not provide ability to create new GPT, only MBR.
  * ubiquity do not provide ability to use grub-efi when installing to devices
with GPT.

2. parted:
a. mklabel gpt
b. mkpart primary fat 0 50
c. quit
3. partprobe /dev/sda
4. dmesg | tail -n1

Kernel reports:
[ 5185.710614] sda: unknown partition table

Kernel config (grep -i part /boot/config-2.6.32-16-generic | grep -i efi):

2010-03-13 Thread Eugene San
Jeremy: What do you mean by install? In case you mean finish install and
then report from fresh installation, then it's impossible since system
may not be formatted...

Apport is still broken in latest daily ISO.
It crashes with python errors in parsing urls or something (under user and
root).
Updating apport from repository fails also due to readonly root.

Anyways, I think issue might be related to:
1.
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-lucid.git;a=commit;h=949c2699b38575324dd8522af6348b63df3e72dd

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-lucid.git;a=commit;h=f28d4f1e0a524ed8ec7039059ea6bc6a4b25a88b

Looks like second commit pretty destroys improvements first commit adds.

BTW: It might not looks like, but that bug is a show-stopper for many
mac and 2TB+ storage users.

[Bug 538100] Re: Linux fails to read GPT(EFI) partition table created by both GNU parted and OSX diskutil

2010-03-13 Thread Eugene San
I think I've localized the problem.
Looks Linux unable to deal with GPT pure partition tables (without synced MBR).
In past a patch (gptsync.patch) was added to parted to solve that issue. (Not
sure ubiquity should enjoy from that fix also)
But it looks like parted refuses to sync GPT and MBR, even tried to force it by
PARTED_GPT_APPLE=1 parted.

Above also correct for OSX Graphical Disk Utility. Console version of
OSX diskutil does create GPT with synced MBR.

Since the issue is not related to specific system, incomplete status should be
removed.
Hope there is a solution floating in upstream...

[Bug 538100] Re: Linux fails to read GPT(EFI) partition table created by both GNU parted and OSX diskutil

2010-03-13 Thread Eugene San
Colin: Thanks for prompt respond.

Additional testing showed that problem is more severe then I assumed initially.
Testcase:
1) Zero HDD header.
2) Format HDD using OSX installer (3 partitions: fa...@efi-boot, h...@osx,
fa...@linux).
3) Reboot into OSX, partition table looks perfect.
3) Reboot into Daily Lucid. parted and fdisk shows expected output, correct
Hybryd GPT+MBR
4) Use parted, ubiquity or partman to modify type and format of LINUX partiton.
5) Linux instantly reports inability to recognise partition table, partman and
ubiquity fails.
fdisk shows empty MBR. parted shows expected partitions layout but not sure
about binary correctness.
6) Reboot and find that OSX cannot boot also!

Conclusion: parted and friends in Lucid makes GPT partition table not
usable. System unbootable and data loss!

We will have to split the problem:
1) I suppose there is no reason why Linux shouldn't be able to work with bare
GPT volumes. That part should be forwarded upstream for inspection.
2) parted and friends must be fixed ASAP. In their current state, they are
source of destruction in GPT/EFI environments. We may consider merging that
part with https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/538536

[Bug 538100] Re: Linux fails to read GPT(EFI) partition table created by both GNU parted and OSX diskutil

2010-03-14 Thread Eugene San
I have tested GPT on non Mac system (VirtualBox).
1) Used gparted LiveCD to create GPT with 4 partitions. As result MBR contained
protective MBR with single partition covering whole suface.
2) Booted in to latest Daily Lucid. Instructed installer to change type of 1 of
4 partitions and use 3 of 4 availbale.
3) Ubiquity finished successfuly.
4) Rebooted into fresh system.
5) Found that GPT is ok but MBR now contain 2 partitions:
First one was previosly available protective
Second was: Bootable, start=1, end=1, size=0, id=0 and type=Empty. What is
that?

From all above I can conclude that issue is severe on Macs but non-Macs are
not too safe either.
I think gpt-sync patch in parted must be reviewed ASAP, before people start
testing Lucid betas on Macs...

[Bug 538100] Re: Linux fails to read GPT(EFI) partition table created by both GNU parted and OSX diskutil

2010-03-15 Thread Eugene San
I assume updated parted and grub-installer are still expected to handle Mac
partitioning demands, right?
After they will land in Daily Lucid, I'll test them on Mac and report.

About Linux, since Linux supports only Hibryd GPT, we would expect every
partitionnig tool to prepare such, right?
Is it correct from EFI perspective?

[Bug 460743] Re: [LucidKarmic] Cambridge Silicon Radio, Bluetooth Dongles do not work

There is a workaround: adding usbcore.autosuspend=0 to Kernel command line.
But that solution unacceptable for portable machines and should be treated in
Linux.
