[Bug 120567] Unable to get microphone working (Dell Dimension 5000)

2007-06-15 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Feisty is the first version of ubuntu I've tried - sound works great
aside from the microphone, which I can't get to work. I just have it
plugged in to the back of the PC.

My ALSA information is located at http://pastebin.ca/568256

I tried to follow the process advised in bug 108563 - I don't see the
same options, but I did try a big of guessing as to what might be
relevant to no avail.

Thank you for any recommendations. I'm happy to assist in any way
possible.

[Bug 152314] Upgrade tool to Kubuntu 7.10 RC crashed

2007-10-13 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

I disregarded the warnings and ran the upgrade tool from Kubuntu 7.04 to
7.10 RC while other applications were running. The system slowed to a
crawl, and a top which I managed to open showed that dist-upgrade.py was
weighing in at over 1GB of virtual memory. Things speeded up again,
presumably because the kernel killed the upgrade tool and the other
largest memory hog (a VirtualBox VM with 256MB allocated, which comes
from kernel memory). I reran the upgrade tool, and this time the
upgrade was successful, but top still showed that dist-upgrade.py was
using 720Mb of virtual memory, which seems a wee bit too much.

This report is informational and I won't be offended if you close it
again immediately, as it will be hard for me to retry to get more
information about the problem.

[Bug 137753] Re: strigidaemon needs exclude lists, defaults eat up too many resources

2007-10-16 Thread Michael
Agree. I tried out Strigi on Gutsy RC, and found that it slows down the
system unacceptably, including foreground processes (re it runs at nice
0). I could imagine someone trying out Kubuntu starting it by mistake
and not knowing why their system was so slow. That would not make a
very good impression.

[Bug 93081] Re: konqueror does not accept SSL certificates "forever"

2007-10-16 Thread Michael
Possibly related (should I open a new issue for this?) I usually keep a
Konqueror window between sessions with several tabs pointing to the same
(company internal) website with a currently invalid certificate. Since
upgrading to the Gutsy RC (may not be related), Konqueror has started
asking me whether to accept the certificate or not for each open tab,
although I always answer "for the rest of this session".

[Bug 153263] Build with -fvisibility-inlines-hidden fails

2007-10-16 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce on Kubuntu 7.10 rc (I have also seen this on 7.04):

1) Download the sources for happyhttp
(http://www.scumways.com/happyhttp/happyhttp-0.1.tar.gz - 13Kb).
2) Change the makefile by adding -fvisibility-inlines-hidden to the end of the
CXXFLAGS.
3) Try to build.

This build works on other distributions, so it may be a problem with the
Ubuntu libstdc++ package.

[Bug 50686] Re: IMAP connections sometimes break and kmail must be closed to fix

2007-10-16 Thread Michael
I have this bug in Gutsy (and have had it for ages). If the connection
dies (which also happens when resuming from suspend) Kmail cannot
reconnect properly. Sometimes I can get Kmail to reconnect and display a
subfolder on the IMAP server, but still cannot get it to display the top
level INBOX. Killing the kio_imap4 process doesn't help either -- Kmail
has to be restarted completely.

This may have something to do with the IMAP server though. The IMAP
server is a Novell GroupWise server. I'm also running a local IMAP
server with dovecot, and I don't have a problem with that -- I can kill
the kio_imap4 process and Kmail will reconnect to dovecot without a
problem.

2007-10-16 Thread Michael
On my hp dv6500t laptop, I have sound now with the backports-generic.
However, the light on the keyboard that would normally turn red if muted
does not - it stays blue. Also, pressing the mute button has no effect
on the headphones. Pressing mute does mute the internal speakers. The
volume control only controls the internal speakers. I have to set the
volume and then plug in the headphones otherwise it plays through both.
The microphone does not work at all.

Public bug reported:

E.g. I type in "joplin" and the list starts with:

joplin mo (k)

[Bug 120567] Re: Unable to get microphone working (Dell Dimension 5000)

2007-07-05 Thread Michael
Hi,

I've tried this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ amixer set 'Capture' 80%
Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
  Capabilities: cvolume cswitch
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Capture 0 - 15
  Front Left: Capture 12 [80%] [18.00dB] [on]
  Front Right: Capture 12 [80%] [18.00dB] [on]

I then run arecord and get line after line of '?', with no change to the
pattern when I talk in to or hit the microphone.

Thanks for the help

[Bug 34944] Re: language and locale detection

2007-05-29 Thread Michael
I think that the installer and the live CD could be a bit smarter in the
default choices for language, location and keyboard layout. Something
like the following:

1) If the user selects the language but not the keymap when booting the live
CD, base the default choice of keymap (for the live CD and the installer) and
location on that choice.
2) If the user selects the keymap but not the language when booting, base
defaults on that but keep default language as English (rationale: I think that
people are more likely to use a keyboard layout corresponding to their country
of residence than to their native language).
3) If the user selects both, select the installers default language based on
the language chosen at boot time and the keyboard layout and location based on
the boot-time choice of keyboard layout.
4) If the user does not choose a keyboard layout at boot time (e.g. I usually
do not, as I don't need it just to boot and start the installer), then base the
default choice in the installer on the choice of location. The layout used for
the live CD could also be switched at this time.

You might also add a more visible option to change the layout quickly
once the live CD is running.

[Bug 64630] Re: Crashes when trying to record (Segmentation Fault)

2007-05-31 Thread Michael
ReZound also crashes when you try to record in ZuBuntu Feisty. I
compiled from the source and reinstalled and it still crashes on record.

During the ./configure process, I noticed the following note:
configure: Tests for methods to use for audio I/O will follow below. The
method actually used will be determined at run-time depending on the order of
the values in the ~/.rezound/registry.dat file in AudioOutput(or Input)Methods
and will depend on which method first initializes successfully. Alternatively,
there is an --audio-method=... flag to the rezound binary to choose which
method to try first. See 'rezound --help' for more information.

There are three choices for the --audio-method argument (oss, alsa or NULL)
rezound --audio-method=oss : doesn't work
rezound --audio-method=alsa : works like a charm

[Bug 74027] WISHLIST: Upgrade gutenprint to the CVS version

2006-12-01 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

The CVS version of gutenprint is very stable and contains support for
lots of new printers (including my Canon iP4200, which Edgy recognises
but prints to incorrectly). If a new version is not released by Feisty
release time, I would strongly recommend including the CVS version.

A backport to Edgy would be great, but I realise that it is unlikely :(

I will have a look later (don't currently have a Ubuntu box to hand). I
take it that purge is still not automatic though. And is it different
from apt-get's purge option? I seem to recall that that just removes
the package with its config files.

[Bug 34394] Re: Switch user not working

2007-01-23 Thread Michael
I think I've got the same bug on my Toshiba A120 - and i'm happy to
provide whatever info is required.

On my machine, I can switch users, but after logging in as the second
user I cannot use the mouse (touchpad on laptop)... so it appears as if
the system has stopped responding (as original reporter said), but I can
infact do alt-F2 open a terminal etc etc.

So, if there's any info I can provide, just let me know. (Guessing the
touchpad has not been freed for use by previous user?)

I'll try to grab a USB mouse and see if it's actually related to the
touchpad.

[Bug 61535] Re: usplash progress reporting is not very accurate for casper

2007-03-28 Thread Michael
I don't know if this quite fits in here, but I will add it anyway.
Currently, during boot of an installed system, the first part of the
bootsplash is very slow to start moving, and a new user might think
their machine has frozen. Some sort of indication (anything moving on
the screen would do really) that that is not the case might not be a bad
thing.

[Bug 71517] Re: Digikam tryes to open wrong device / Digikam import fails

2007-03-29 Thread Michael
I have the same problem as the original poster with a Canon Powershot
A410. According to the output of the ps command, digikam is invoked
with the command line 'digikam --download-from media:/camera', but it
complains that it is unable to open '/camera', like in the first
attached screenshot (but in English :). I presume that it is not
processing its command line options correctly, or that that option is
getting mangled at some point during processing. For the record,
'media:/camera' opens correctly in Konqueror if I close digikam first.

2007-03-29 Thread Michael
It was in Edgy. I have just checked, and it is fixed in Feisty. As a
side note, the text which appears in the hotplug dialogue box was nicer
in Edgy ("Upload photos to Digikam" rather than "Detect camera and
upload to Digikam" or whatever it is in Feisty). Although something
like "View photos in Digikam" might be better still.

Is it worth adding that to the Edgy backports repository? I don't know
whether the people who tend to use backports will be those who upgrade
to Feisty anyway, or whether on the contrary those who take advantage of
the longer term support will also want backports to stay up to date.

(Minolta magicolor 2430 DL Foomatic/foo2zjs (recommended))[1]
The program 'gnome-cups-add' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 218 error_code 2 request_code 94 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I think that problem in locale settings - i use ru_RU.UTF-8. If i start

all works fine.

[Bug 108912] Re: gnome-system-monitor reports wrong upload/download speed

2007-04-23 Thread Michael
It does happen by every upload or/and download.
Also by apt-get install
My download is very constant.
Example
When I install software with apt-get install, then the right download-speed is
shown in the progress info in the terminal.
Also when downloading/ upping with Azureus a constant speed will be shown be
in the upload/download statistics.
As a proof a have added a screen dump of Azureus when downloading a torrent.
Also Wireshark (previously named ethereal) show also a constant speed of the up
and downloads.
I hope you believe me and can solve this issue.
If you need more info, please ask me.

Some additional hardware info from lshw (attachment)
Maybe it helps someone who has the same hardware / configuration to fix the bug.
It could be related to the hardware configuration.

Would it be possible for you to remove the file CoreDump.gz which is

[Bug 82870] Kubuntu/Crystal: minimised windows do not resize correctly

2007-02-02 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kwin-style-crystal

When a minimised window resizes itself in Kubuntu-Edgy with the Crystal
window decorations, the WM clipping area is not adjusted. The following
small programme illustrates this:

#include

Display *dpy = XOpenDisplay(NIL);
assert(dpy);

int blackColor = BlackPixel(dpy, DefaultScreen(dpy));

   200, 100, 0, blackColor, blackColor);
XMapWindow(dpy, w);
XFlush(dpy);
printf("The window will be resized when you press [ENTER].\n");
printf("Please minimize the window first. Then press [ENTER] to continue...
");

[Bug 83574] Kernel does not boot without pci=nommconf parameter

2007-02-06 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

As the summary says: I am unable to boot the Feisty Live CD (I did not
actually install it, just tried it out) on my AMD64/ASUS K8N4-E system
without the pci=nommconf kernel parameter. Sorry to be reporting this
again (I have already done so against Dapper and Edgy). I believe from
research on Google that this affects a number of 64bit BIOSes.

I am actually interested to know whether there is a good reason for
enabling mmconfig by default in the kernel .config at all? If there is,
perhaps you could do something like disabling it on the Live CD and
checking for known bad BIOSes during installation, so that you can add
that parameter to the grub command line for those systems.

[Bug 83716] Linux image contains buggy alternatives code

2007-02-07 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic

The SMP alternatives code (dmesg: SMP alternatives: switching to ...
code) present in this package is known to be buggy, and can potentially
crash the kernel if an interrupt occurs during the alternatives
patching. This does actually occur particularly often when the kernel
is running on a virtual machine. This bug has been fixed in the
mainline kernel (I believe somewhere around 2.6.18.3). Perhaps you
could backport the fix?

[Bug 38303] Re: usplash can't display fsck progress

2007-02-07 Thread Michael
Some filesystem checkers (notably for ext2, which most newbies will be
using) do give progress information. If such a checker is being run,
usplash could monitor the information which it sends and show a status
bar, and only go into text mode if something unexpected happens (or it
receives no information within a certain timeframe). It could also go
back in to graphics mode after fsck is finished (or even display the
information in a window, like the Fedora usplash).

[Bug 83574] Re: Kernel does not boot without pci=nommconf parameter

2007-02-08 Thread Michael
Here is the end of the boot message (not fresh, I posted this to the
LKML ages ago). If you like, I can get hold of a serial cable and get
the full message. Yes, it may well be a buggy BIOS - or the kernel
implementation may still have problems (in fact, it probably does by
definition: they want anything which works in Windows to work in Linux
:)

More seriously, yes, it probably is an ACPI BIOS bug, but I think that
there are lots and lots of buggy BIOSes around. What benefit do we
actually get currently from having mmconfig enabled?

[Bug 91250] Re: [edgy-backports] Error in libgphoto2 udev rules

2007-03-22 Thread Michael
Another can't transfer photos except as root problem. I am using Edgy with
backports enabled. It worked until recently. Now, if I change the permissions
of /proc/bus/usb/002/005 (that is where the camera is currently plugged in) to
make it world read and writable, then I can use digikam as user to get the
photos, otherwise I can only do it as root. The camera is detected as user
even with the standard permissions though. And yes, I am a member of the
plugdev group. Here are the old permissions of the device:
crw-rw-r-- 1 root root 189, 132 2007-03-22 20:49 /proc/bus/usb/002/005

(Just checked, when I change the 'BUS!="usb*"...' line to
'SUBSYSTEM!="usb_Device"...'. it works again).

[Bug 95056] Re: coreutils-doc package missing

2007-03-23 Thread Michael
Yes. The problem is solved! I did an "info expr" and noticed that the manual
page was showed. I expected the expr.info loaded. So I searched for the package
where expr was packed. That was the "coreutils" package. Usually to get the
documentation all to do is an apt-get install package-doc. Thats what I did and
noticed it was not found.
info coreutils is the complete manual for all the commands of the package :-)
Sorry for the wrong conclusion. Please close this bug. It never was a bug.
Thanks for the help.

[Bug 95245] info-doc package missing

2007-03-23 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: info

In Feisty is the info document missing for the info command.
So
info info shows the man page instead of the info.info documentation.
apt-get install info-doc result in an error because this is not a package ( in
at least Ubuntu Feisty).
I have a workaround for this by manually download the info.info.tar.gz from the
 http://www.gnu.org/software/texinfo/manual/info/

[Bug 54294] Re: Failed to allocate mem resource #6 ...

2007-03-24 Thread Michael
Has nothing to do with BIOS version in my opinion.
I have an Intel DQ965GF with the newest BIOS date smbios.bios.release_date =
'02/25/2007'
smbios.bios.version = 'CO96510J.86A.5840.2007.0225.2142'
and I got still a PCI: Failed to allocate mem resource #6:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

1:00.0 message at booting.
However the system works perfectly. The message is only showed when booting and
is recorded in /var/log/dmesg

[Bug 80900] Re: problems resolving fully qualified domain names on Kubuntu feisty

2007-03-25 Thread Michael
I have the same problem.
DNS/DHCP Server: Linksys WRT54G router with DD-WRT Firmware (dnsmasq as
dhcp/dns server)
Client Computers (OS): Edgy, Feisty (fresh install, updates installed)
network-manager is connecting through dhcp (search domain is automatically
defined in resolv.conf)

In feisty it isn't possible to resolve a local fqdn
(computer.mydomain.local)... but resolving internet domains is no problem!
dns lookup works in edgy and feisty.
ping and e.g. firefox can't resolve my domain.local.

So i can't access my local ftp/http server with the fqdn, but using only
the hostname or ip makes no trouble.

Could this be related to avahi or new network-manager version?
I will have to do some more tests.

[Bug 80447] Re: Impress crashes when searching help

2007-05-01 Thread Michael
I can confirm this bug with feisty final and openoffice 2.2.0 (up to
date).

I could reproduce this bug with the following steps:
- start openoffice impress
- open help
- klick search tab
- enter some search-text
- klick search button
=> all openoffice windows disappear
- recovery will start on next openoffice startup

At the moment impress is very unusable (there are also other important,
confirmed bugs)!

[Bug 38303] Re: no visible indication that a long-running fsck is taking place in background

2007-05-03 Thread Michael
The following may sound like a very naive suggestion, but I will make it
anyway. Usually fsck is run routinely every 30 (or so) times a file
system is mounted. Is there any reason why fsck can not instead be run
in the background in read-only mode every so often while the system is
running? This will produce a number of false positive errors due to
temporary inconsistencies in the file system. However, it should also
confirm that 99% of the file system is consistent. Then, when fsck is
run at start up, it need only check those previously reported errors to
make sure that they have gone, which should be much faster. This could
even be short-circuited further by comparing the errors on different
live runs and eliminating those which have disappeared since the last
run.

Or as an alternative form of my last comment, do a live scan on every
boot (or every second, third or whatever) and set a maximum number of
times a given error can appear before a full scan is forced on the next

[Bug 220151] Re: (N?)NetworkManager does not always connect to wireless AP on startup

2008-11-05 Thread Michael
This definitely seems to be KNetworkManager-related. I have just
switched to Ubuntu without the K (i.e. installed ubuntu-desktop and
removed the kubuntu bits) and it works fine now.

Since there is apparantly now no one who can reproduce this bug, you
might as well close it until someone else sees it.
