[Bug 1581314] Re: gparted crashes when copying ntfs partition

2017-06-19 Thread Phil
My apt-cache output above reports nothing useful, as I had to compile
gparted by hand to get version 0.25. The most recent version available
via package manager is 0.19. The man page for gparted does not say any
way to get a version number, so I cannot report its version number.

[Bug 1565048] Re: imgur upload plugin no longer works due to now unsupported API 1 and 2

2017-05-25 Thread Phil
Hi Everyone,

Could any of you please explain to me so I can explain to others, where
I can download these updated file(s), and how to install them? Do I need
to download just the "imgur.pm" file, or are there other files needed to
get this working with "imgur", if so where? Are there new Shutter ".deb"
packages available or a PPA for these updates?

FYI: I am using Linux Mint 17.3 KDE and Linux Mint 18.1 KDE and using
the "shutter-testing-team" PPA to keep my Shutter application updated,
is this the correct one? Have these changes been uploaded to the Shutter
PPAs?

Also, since all of you seem good at this, have you come up with other
".pm" files for other image hosting services like "postimage.org",
etc...? It would be really nice if Shutter had a configuration option to
add other image hosts as well based upon the host's authentication
method ...

Best regards to all of you,
Phil

Alan, are you able to compile iproute2 by yourself? If so, could you please
give upstream's 'net-next' branch a try? It should solve the issue you are
seeing.

Thanks, Phil

[Bug 1747736] [NEW] Plasma crashed after adding a battery time widget

2018-02-06 Thread Phil
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 17.10 (64 bit), Plasma 5.10.5, 5.38.0 Frameworks.
Lenovo x270

I followed the steps here (second to the latest bug):
https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=225=141577=394432#p394432

So I followed the steps to try to add the battery widget to my taskbar.
Then things crashed so I restarted the laptop. When I got back, the
wallpaper reverted to the default wallpaper and the task bar vanished so
all there is just black bar on the bottom for some reason. I can't even
right click the desktop. Then my plasma? crashed (I don't even know the
name of this thing or if I'm reporting the right package) as I'm a
newbie.

I like Linux but if adding such a simple widget does something so
terrible to Linux, I am seriously thinking about going back to Windows.
Why can't things just be simple? I hope someone can help me fast so I
can get on with my work.

Phil

You can close this issue now, I'm never using that widget again.

I fixed it by looking at this:

[Bug 1807765] Re: audacious 3.10 does not have QT interface option in bionic

2018-12-12 Thread Phil
Hi Erich Eickmeyer (eeickmeyer),

Thank you for replying.

I thought I was replying to the PPA owner directly. Can you provide more
specific instructions? I don't mind saying that reporting bugs through
launchpad is certainly not easy nor are the instructions very clear.

I found out the problem was conflicting application packages in two
PPA's the webupd8 PPA which is the Audacious recommended PPA and has the
QT interface and the "ubuntuhandbook1/apps" (panda jim) PPA where
Audacious apparently did not compile the app with the QT option enabled.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and yours and everyone else.

[Bug 1807765] [NEW] audacious 3.10 does not have QT interface option in bionic

2018-12-10 Thread Phil
Public bug reported:

Hello Ubuntu and Webupd8 people,

Regarding Audacious package
WebUpd8 : Alin Andrei
https://launchpad.net/~nilarimogard/+archive/ubuntu/webupd8

The current version of Audacious 3.10 is not installing the QT version
which it is supposed to do nor can I invoke it from the console terminal
command either, which may be because it was not compiled with the QT
option enabled. This was working before. I have contacted Audacious
developers and they say it is a PPA maintainer problem issue.

Please check and fix this asap. Thank you.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!

Re: [Bug 1728012] Update Released

2019-07-21 Thread Phil
Hi Lukasz,

I am an Ubuntu user but *not* a technician so please bear with me. Your
e-mail says "The verification of the Stable Release Update for
sane-backends has
completed successfully and the package has now been released to -updates."
Do you know what release will contain the fix and when the release will
occur?
(I updated my system a couple of minutes ago and the scanner is still not
working.) Should I have checkmarked Pre-released updates Bionic-proposed
in the Developer Options tab of the update settings - see picture? (The
release I'm using is 18.04.02) Thanks!

[Bug 1855757] Re: [nvidia] Background image corrupted after standby or resume from suspend

2020-09-29 Thread Phil
@Daniel, is it possible to add a repo for this fix early ahead of coming
down in the release repos?

On the release repos I have the latest version.

mutter is already the newest version (3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.2).

Cheers for any advice

[Bug 1910555] Re: Driver build error on kernel 5.8, but works on 5.4

2021-01-14 Thread Phil
Thanks @ZdravkoG

After re-installing Ubuntu, I was able to get the package onto the device using
a USB stick.
I then updated Ubuntu, and then installed the package from my Downloads folder.

However, upon reboot, I'm now taken to the GRUB boot menu. From there,
it is hit or miss on whether or not the laptop actually boots to the
desktop, no matter what options that I choose.

I'm just going to re-install Ubuntu from scratch and use this laptop as
I had been before the latest update. I'm too new with Ubuntu, and would
like to spend some time working with a working version.

I truly appreciate your assistance. Thanks!

If i leave screen rotation in GNOME enabled and come back form suspend
mode (open/close Laptop) the screen is rotated wrong. Mostly 90 degrees
left from normal view axis.

Expected behaviour:

The screen should not rotate until logged in again or there should be a
delay before choosing an new rotation whilst laptop is opened.

Same problem seems to be present in older iio-sensor-proxy versions.

[Bug 1976556] [NEW] [Lenovo 300e 2nd GEN] ELAN Touchpad not working

2022-06-01 Thread phil
Public bug reported:

Used Ubunutu 22.04 with the current 5.15.x Kernel, cross tested with

I have a Lenovo 300e 2nd Gen with an ELAN Touchscreen AND Touchpad with
AMD processor.

The Touchscreen is working flawlessly.
The TouchPAD is dead.

According to the Windows driver:

%ELANHIDDeviceDesc% = ETD_HID_PTP_WIN10_Group1_Inst,

%ELANHIDDeviceDesc% = ETD_HID_PTP_WIN10_Group1_Inst,

it is an ELAN066C

[Bug 1163927] [NEW] indent/puppet.vim required by vim-addons-manager registry but not in package

2013-04-03 Thread Phil Frost
Public bug reported:

installing the package vim-puppet results in a VIM addon that can't be
enabled:

$ sudo vim-addon-manager -w install puppet
Warning: ignoring 'puppet' which is missing source files

Seems to me that the addon requires indent/puppet.vim:

$ cat /usr/share/vim/registry/vim-puppet.yaml
addon: puppet
description: Syntax highlighting for puppet
files:
  - ftdetect/puppet.vim
  - indent/puppet.vim
  - syntax/puppet.vim

but indent/puppet.vim is not installed by the package:

$ cat /usr/share/vim/addons/indent/puppet.vim
cat: /usr/share/vim/addons/indent/puppet.vim: No such file or directory

(unlike the other two files referenced):

$ ls -l /usr/share/vim/addons/ftdetect/puppet.vim
/usr/share/vim/addons/syntax/puppet.vim
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 85 May 16 2012
/usr/share/vim/addons/ftdetect/puppet.vim
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5334 Jul 6 2012 /usr/share/vim/addons/syntax/puppet.vim

Removing the reference to indent/puppet.vim in vim-puppet.yaml seems to
be an acceptable solution.

[Bug 908605] [NEW] mod_wsgi fails to log python errors

2011-12-25 Thread Phil Stone
Public bug reported:

mod_wsgi based python apps that generate python errors, like divide by
zero, should send a 500 error to the browser and log the python errors
in the applications' log.

In Ubuntu 11.10 a regression was introduce where the Apache VirtualHost
must be specified as *:80 for this expected behavior to still work.
Anything else sends the 500 error to the browser, but leaves nothing in
the apache log file.

Here are the 2 files needed to reproduce the problem...
To reproduce you also need an entry in /etc/hosts for www.hello.loc to be
127.0.0.1,
and an otherwise working apache server.

--- The standard mod_wsgi Hello World App, modifed to force a divide by
zero error... ---

#!/usr/bin/python

def application(environ, start_response):

a = 5/0 # This line added to induce a deliberate error. Hide this
line to always see Hello World! in browser.

status = '200 OK'
output = 'Hello World!'

response_headers = [('Content-type', 'text/plain'),
('Content-Length', str(len(output)))]
start_response(status, response_headers)

return [output]

--- The Apache Configuration file for this same application ---

WSGIRestrictEmbedded On

VirtualHost 127.0.0.1:80

ServerName www.hello.loc

WSGIProcessGrouphello.loc
WSGIDaemonProcess   hello.loc processes=1 threads=10 display-name=%{GROUP}
WSGIScriptAlias / /www/hello/website.py process-group=hello.loc
application-group=${GLOBAL}

LogLevelwarn
ErrorLog/www/hello/logs/error.log
CustomLog /www/hello/logs/access.log combined

/VirtualHost

--- NOTES ---

The 2 files given above are SUPPOSED to generate an internal error to the
browser (a 500 error)
AND log into the error log the python traceback showing the line and file where
the divide by zero
error happened.

It does not work because of the 127.0.0.1 in the VirtualHost...

Also broke are Named Virtual Hosts of any form, as in...

VirtualHost local

The work around is to use * instead, as in...

VirtualHost *:80

I found this bug on an upgrade of Ubuntu Server to 11.10.

Note that the form that works, VirtualHost *:80 serves the site on all IP
addresses on a
server. This is the toy form of this command. Real servers are often
multi-homed.
The parameter on the Virtual host when not *:80 is supposed to indicate the IP
or named server that
is being used.

NOTE... ONLY ERROR LOGGING is impacted by this bug, NOT normal display.

A website impacted by this bug, especially after a system upgrade to 11.10,
will serve
Internal Server Errors to client browsers and NOT log the error to the error
logs
for discovery later by an administrator.

(As I found out to my trouble on a much, much bigger system than this
example.)

Technically the work-around given above is a potential security issue depending
on the networking
involved, so be careful if you're reading this and hacking your server to get
it working again.

[Bug 592610] Re: Shared folders (through Samba) when following instructions sometimes does not work correctly

2012-06-07 Thread Phil Headford
I agree with Paddy Landau that a respectable OS is expected these days
to be able to connect to shared folders (on at least the three main OSs)
with little or no user intervention. Once the computer and workgroup are
entered, and perhaps whether DHCP is being used, the configuration files
should be automatically tailored to suit the situation the system finds
itself in.

[Bug 1037037] [NEW] etckeeper not working on Precise

2012-08-15 Thread Phil Dobbin
Public bug reported:

I run etckeeper on several different distros (CentOS, Debian, Fedora)
it works just fine. However when installing via Synaptic on Ubuntu 12.04
Precise Pangolin i686 after the installation I run the initial commit
which is OK, it fails to work either via Software Update, Synaptic or
apt.

I've triple checked all the config files, I've switched from bzr to git,
I've purged re-installed I've also installed it on three different
physical systems (one of which was a clean install i686 from a Live CD)
but after the initial commit, nothing happens.

The cron job doesn't run after a Software Update, both `status`
`log` are telling me the repo's clean when it patently isn't.

From what I've seen on Google searches pertaining to this problem, it
seems I'm the only one who's seeing this which is why I went to lengths
that I have to make sure it wasn't a problem my end.

I've asked on the Ubuntu User mailing list have received no responses
so I've filed this now as a bug.

Hi, Serge.

less's output is:

`revno: 1

As you can see by the date that was five days ago I install all
updates after the cron job job finds any each morning.

Also I ran `sudo apt-get install libboost-dev` successfully just before
the above less output was sent to STDOUT.

Cheers,

[Bug 239704] Re: package slapd 2.3.35-1ubuntu0.2 failed to install/upgrade:

2008-06-13 Thread Phil Lello
I managed to get the package to install correctly after changing my
/etc/ldap/slapd.conf, to update the include for evolutionperson.schema
to /usr/share/evolution-data-server-2.22/evolutionperson.schema.

This had been left pointing at the pre-hardy path of /usr/share
/evolution-data-server-2.22/evolutionperson.schema

As a minimum, I'd recommend that missing schemas shouldn't cause the
slapd upgrade to fail, although I don't know what action should be taken
(if any) to correct this. In this case, I guess includes from different
packages should be checked for before anything gets uninstalled, but I
have no idea how complex this might be to do.

[Bug 316441] Re: PHP session garbage collection

2009-02-03 Thread Phil Bayfield
In the [Session] section of php.ini there is the following:

; Define the probability that the 'garbage collection' process is started
; on every session initialization.
; The probability is calculated by using gc_probability/gc_divisor,
; e.g. 1/100 means there is a 1% chance that the GC process starts
; on each request.

; This is disabled in the Debian packages, due to the strict permissions
; on /var/lib/php5. Instead of setting this here, see the cronjob at
; /etc/cron.d/php5, which uses the session.gc_maxlifetime setting below
session.gc_probability = 1
session.gc_divisor = 100

The default for session.gc_probability in Ubuntu is 0.

What does work:

Using standard PHP stuff, keeping sessions stored in default path of
/var/lib/php5

What doesn't work:

Changing session path to another folder either in php.ini or using an ini_set
etc (although the cron job can be modified). (For example we use an NFS share
for standard PHP sessions so sessions are valid accross multiple web servers.)
Using session_set_save_handler to modify default session storage functions of
php.

Granted for most users the default functionality provided currently with
php5 packages will be absolutely fine, but for larger, more complex and
distributed PHP applications it breaks the functionality without
modification back to php defaults.

[Bug 1210253] Re: With Havana 2 installed, Launching horizon UI results in the error NameError: name 'Dashboard' is not defined

2013-10-01 Thread Phil Frost
The cloud archive does not yet have the fix. It's not terribly hard to
patch the packages locally, though. Summary:

apt-get install build-essential
apt-get source horizon
apt-get build-dep horizon
cd horizon-*
# apply the changes to debian/rules and debian/changelog at
#
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/148082203/horizon_1%3A2013.2~b2-0ubuntu2_1%3A2013.2~b2-0ubuntu3.diff.gz
# (although probably you will want a different version number, so
# the next ubuntu cloud archive version superceeds yours)
dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc
cd ..

install the resulting .debs with dpkg -i, or put them in a ppa, or
some other repo, etc.

I've confirmed that these changes fix at least the problem described
here. I'm then having a different problem: when I log in, I get
redirected back to the login page, with no error in the browser or
apache's error.log that I can find. However, that is probably more
likely something I did wrong upgrading from grizzly to havanah, or a
separate issue.

[Bug 1264910] [NEW] Tmux backend can't handle spaces in window name

2013-12-29 Thread Phil Pemberton

When hitting Ctrl-a A (ctrl-a shift-a) to rename the window, if I enter
a name with spaces, Tmux briefly displays an error Usage: rename-window

Entering a window name without spaces works fine.

Similarly, the window name cannot be set to an empty string - this
results in the same error message.

[Bug 316441] Re: PHP session garbage collection

2011-02-01 Thread Phil Bayfield
The irony of the situation is that the latest Ubuntu PHP packages, in
Maverick and also Lucid I believe (but don't have a running version to
hand to verify) actually do contain the original php.net defaults for
garbage collection. So in fact BOTH the default PHP garbage collector
and the Debian cron job are running.

So now not only does this supposed security flaw (according to Ondřej)
now exist in the package, but also the half-assed Debian cron job that
doesn't even prevent multiple versions of itself running and causes
extremely high IO. Replacing one flawed system with another flawed
system is not a solution.

The reality is that Debian are the real package maintainers and Ubuntu
just make a few small modifications and run the auto build scripts,
hence we're probably wasting our breath raising the issue here.

[Bug 370445] [NEW] Postfix is dependancy for MySQL Server on server edition

[Bug 316441] Re: PHP session garbage collection

2009-05-31 Thread Phil Bayfield
You're probably better off removing the Debian cron job and modifying
the php.ini yourself to your prefered settings (even if you revert them
back to the original PHP settings).

Unfortunately, it doesn't seam like anyone at Ubuntu is interested in
changing this away from the Debian modifications, despite the fact it is
non-standard behaviour for PHP.

There is an interesting thread on this somewhere on the PHP internals
mailing list, it seams the PHP developers feel the pain of users having
problems with distro modified versions of PHP and get quite a few
complaints from users because of non-standard mods to the source by the
linux distros (obviously not their fault)! Unfortunately couldn't find
it now but it's on there somewhere.

[Bug 316441] Re: PHP session garbage collection

2009-06-01 Thread Phil Bayfield
If you edit /etc/cron.d/php5 you will have something like this:

# /etc/cron.d/php5: crontab fragment for php5
# This purges session files older than X, where X is defined in seconds
# as the largest value of session.gc_maxlifetime from all your php.ini
# files, or 24 minutes if not defined. See /usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime

# Look for and purge old sessions every 30 minutes
09,39 * * * * root [ -x /usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime ] [ -d
/var/lib/php5 ] find /var/lib/php5/ -type f -cmin
+$(/usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime) -print0 | xargs -n 200 -r -0 rm

Just comment the last line to disable the cron job.

Then in /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini search for the [Session] section and
modify any of the following to your requirements:

session.save_handler = files

How php stores session data, leave this alone unless you want to change
the save handler, e.g. to memcache

;session.save_path = /var/lib/php5

Change the location of where php saves session files. Either a local
path for 'files' or a url in the form of tcp://1.2.3.4:11211/ for
memcache etc.

;session.gc_probability = 0
session.gc_divisor = 100

You will need to uncomment session.gc_probability and set it to 1 to
enable the default garbage collection behaviour of PHP. This means that
approx every 100 requests PHP will perform garbage collection, you could
decrease session.gc_divisor or increase session.gc_probability to
increase this but default should be fine.

session.gc_maxlifetime = 1440

This is how long sessions remain active, 1440 seconds is not long, only
about 20 mins (24 to be exact) so it is often worth increasing this
value, depending on your needs.

There are other variables in the [Session] section but you shouldn't
need to change them.

[Bug 316441] Re: PHP session garbage collection

2010-10-11 Thread Phil Bayfield
I found another issue with this cron job today.

One of our web servers was experiencing very high load, I assumed we had
high traffic and went to take a look at where the traffic was coming
from.

It wasn't website traffic at all.

We had so many PHP session files in the folder that the cron had failed
to delete all the files within 30 minutes, in fact we had 6 cron jobs
running at the same time. This almost brought the server to it's knees.

Yet another reason to loose this cron job.

reverse should not be true.

[Bug 39249] Re: (Dapper, Hardy) can't create /var/lib/dhcp3/dhclient.eth0.leases: Permission denied

2010-03-14 Thread Phil M
I just noticed this on a Hardy server installation while investigating a
network outage. It's apparently unrelated, since this bug has been
appearing at least a week (according to syslog), while problems only
cropped up today.

I have dhcp3-client version 3.0.6.dfsg-1ubuntu9.1 installed.

Syslog entries:

I'm not going to try to reproduce this, because this is a production

[Bug 494141] Re: CUPS starts after SAMBA; printers are not available

2010-04-23 Thread Phil Salkie
I see this problem in Kubuntu Karmic as well. I've worked around it by
adding /etc/init.d/samba reload to /etc/rc.local, since I'm not sure
if there's a valid reason to start Samba way before CUPS. Probably
adding a check at the end of the CUPS startup script to see if smbd is
running, and if so then tell samba to reload would also have fixed
things nicely.

[Bug 1389614] [NEW] libvirt lts upgrade misses librbd dependency

2014-11-05 Thread Phil Weir
Public bug reported:

Following the automated upgrade path from Precise to Trusty, libvirtd
failed to load libvirt_driver_storage.so (and consequently
libvirt_driver_qemu.so). In our case, this was fixed by installing
librbd-dev (presumably due to librbd1 dependency).

[Bug 59372] Boot fails with upstart

Public bug reported:

[Bug 52701] Latest edgy kernel fails to boot (2.6.17-4-k7)

2006-07-11 Thread Phil Housley
Public bug reported:

Attempting to boot with 2.6.17-4-k7 does absolutely nothing, it just
drops to a completely blank screen straight out of the grub menu. There
is no disk activity, and there are no complaints when I reboot that any
file systems are dirty.

Processor is a AMD Athlon XP (32 bit,) root file system is reiserfs, all
packages are as up to date as I can get them at the moment. I think
that all low level packages are up to date and properly installed.

Also, I don't think that this kernel version ran update-grub by itself,

The bug is not present in the Ubuntu Hoary or Ubuntu Breezy

I think this problem may be an upstream problem, perhaps due to
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5507, because Ive compiled a
2.6.18-rc1 series MM kernel and that doesn't exhibit the same problem.

Thanks for your bug report. Which version of Ubuntu and gnome-session do
you use? Can you check the .xsession-errors file for anything
 interesting?

 ** Changed in: gnome-session (Ubuntu)
Assignee: (unassigned) = Ubuntu Desktop Bugs
Status: Unconfirmed = Needs Info

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS
gnome-session 2.14.2-0ubuntu

Nothing unusual in .xsession-errors

The problem seems to be with gnome-session-save --kill
It opens the screen offering Logout, Lock Screen, Switch User,
Hibernate, Restart, Shutdown, Cancel
then whichever option you choose it saves the session and exits without
carrying out the kill
I tried running gnome-session-save --kill as root in case it's a
permissions problem, but this makes no difference.

Phil.

Any point in me running this under strace?

ah, that's interesting. Only happens with me as the user. Must be
something I'm running that alters the behaviour of gnome-session-save.

I will look into this further and see if I can find out which program it
is.

Thanks.

[Bug 49178] Re: Installer crashed (xfs related?)

2006-06-14 Thread Phil Miller
I've experienced this crash, with the same traceback, when I tried to
use xfs for / and /home partitions. I haven't tried it with a different
filesystem setting, because something went wrong with the Windows
installation on that system after the crashed install, and recovering
that is currently more important to me.

I'm posting this to request that, at the very least, this issue be added
to the 'Known Issues' section of the Release Notes. I'm an experienced
Linux user (Debian on the desktop for 3+ years, various servers for
longer), and this caught me by surprise. Seeing a comment in the code
asking 'why is this crashing' when I investigated the traceback did not
inspire confidence. Preferable would be fixing this and uploading a
revised image to resolve it, but I don't know if that's feasible now,
after the release.

[Bug 47848] Re: should warn at partitioning stage if /boot is on XFS

2006-06-15 Thread Phil Miller
It looks like bug #49178 has a lot of people experiencing this crash. It
is also marked as Critical, while this is only Medium. Now that I know
the exact cause, it will be much easier to avoid this.

50 megabytes should be more than sufficient, even with the possibility
of kernel upgrades and such in mind.

2006-06-21 Thread Phil Miller
Generally, it's good practice to keep at least one previous kernel
around when installing a new one, in case you find problems after the
initial succesful boot with the new kernel. For example, an updated
driver in the new kernel could cause instability under circumstances
that only crop up after some time and lead you to reboot into the
older one until a fixed version is released.

[Bug 50824] Re: [Bug 50824] Re: Keeps dying on grub-install attempt

2006-06-25 Thread Phil V
I was trying and xfs partition. andi5 says that he had the same
problem and that it was b/c of the XFS filesystem. Apparently his
worked with a jfs install. I installed using text mode and got it up
and running. The screen went blank for a bit but ipressed enter after
the HDD indicator stopped and it rebooted and now I am in. Thanks for
your help

I think I have seen the same: the installer repeatedly crashes at 95% :(

One question: What file system is /boot on? I was able to install dapper
finally, after having realized that maybe there was just an unfetched
warning about grub having problems with xfs file systems.

If you have the same problem: Make a small /boot partition with an ext
 file system.
