[Bug 51227] cannot restart, logout,shutdown

2006-06-28 Thread Phil Borman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

When I hit the log out button I get a dialog asking log-out, lock,
switch user, hibernate, restart, shut down. Whichever option I choose
then pops up a dialog saying your session has been saved and then I
get returned back to my desktop. I can only logout/restart/shutdown by
hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL or kill -HUP GDM

Nice work Vassilis. Could you change the comment field a little, though,
please? The current one introduces jargon (HTTP/FTP) which I don't think
is necessary.

Maybe 'Manage Internet downloads, with support for resuming stopped

[Bug 68012] Re: No usplash on boot/shutdown

2006-11-03 Thread Phil Cook
Andrew,

I can't speak for Henrik, but the bug I'm experiencing is only
superficially similar to #61711. The only problem I'm experiencing is
the blank screen, with a blinking cursor, during boot. GDM starts fine,
and there doesn't seem to be any appreciable slowdown. Moreover, #61711
seems to be related to x86-64. I'm running i386.

HTH,
Phil.

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume

2007-10-24 Thread Phil Estes
Yes, it was made clear in the release notes and article that the latest
driver still does not have 2.6.23 kernel support, which is most likely
a euphemism for not handling the SLUB allocator which is default in
2.6.23. However, the bright side according to the article is that next
month's drop is supposed to include it.

As an aside, 8.42.3 does allow use of compiz without xgl since it has
AIGLX support built into fglrx. You have to edit /usr/bin/compiz to add
fglrx to the WHITELIST of drivers that are allowed to use compiz.

I just built Inkscape 0.46-devel and got the same result: Inkscape does

[Bug 290624] [NEW] Stack smashing in libcdk5 calendar applet

2008-10-29 Thread Phil Pemberton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libcdk5

Ubuntu release: 8.04.1

What actually happened: glibc Stack Smashing alert and SIGABORT.

I compiled the demo applications that were included in CDK

calendar example failed to run. In fact, instead of running, it produced
the following backtrace output:

Due to the lack of debug symbols in the release libraries, I recompiled libcdk
with CFLAGS=-g -ggdb, then relinked calendar_ex against the new static
library:
CFLAGS=-g -ggdb bash ./configure
make
make cdkshlib
mkdir -p /tmp/cdkdebug
cp libcdk.* /tmp/cdkdebug

Then to rebuild calendar_ex (the -DExitProgram is a modification that removes
the need for cdk_test.h -- I search/replaced all instances of cdk_test.h with
cdk/cdk.h in the example .c source files):
gcc -Wall -g -ggdb -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I../include -I./../include -I.
-D_GNU_SOURCE -DExitProgram=exit calendar_ex.c -o calendar_ex -L.. -lcdk
-lncurses -L/tmp/cdkdebug

After running the app again through gdb, it still crashed. The backtrace
pointed to an error in the function drawCDKCalendarField in
calendar.c. It seems the underlying issue is that a statically-allocated
string is being declared, and being overrun by the sprintf at line 498.
Temp is declared on line 462, as a char[10].

The sprintf creates a string containing the month name and day number,
separated by a space, and with a trailing comma. That means that if the
day number is between 1 and 9, the length of the final string will be
strlen(monthname)+3, or strlen(monthname)+4 for a 2-digit day (excluding
the trailing null). As the variable is allocated as 10 bytes, then the
month name can be no longer than 5 characters (noting the trailing
null). Therefore, this code

2008-10-30 Thread Phil Gorman
Public bug reported:

I have been using Ubuntu Studio as my desktop. During the downloading phase I
received the following Error Message: An error occured while loading or saving
configiuartion for front end. Some of your configuration settings may not work
properly. Details: Failed to contact configuration sever; some possible causes
are that you need to enable TCP/IP networks foe ORBIT, or you have stale NFS
locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for
information.
Details: 1. failed to get connection to session. Failed to connect to socket
/tmp/dbus-gbQoP7Zgba. Connection refused.

During the installation phase and prior to the package manager error
another error message informed me it couldn't do whatever it needed to
to with the Ubuntu Studio Menu.

I expected to download and install 8.10 with no trouble, as I had done
with 8,04. I hoped that8.10 would then be able to recognise and mount
my USB connected external backup drive, something Gutsy was able to do
but not Heron.

Last night I downloaded the package and this morning I left it to
install. On checking at lunchtime I was horrified to find that my
previous configurations hed been removed before the installation gave up
the ghost.

Is there anything I can do to recover my previous set up and extremely
precious data?

Thanking you in anticipation but little hope.

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume

2008-04-21 Thread Phil Estes
if it helps your investigations, 8.4 is the first in the 8.x series that
works reliably for me on suspend/resume and various crashes/hangs I was
getting on any earlier version of fglrx. I have now had a 5 or 6 days
of uptime on 8.4 and multiple suspend/resumes (with no changes to the
acpi defaults about post video/save state, etc.) with absolutely no
issues. This is all on hardy latest (-16 kernel, etc.) on an older
chipset (FireGL Mobility T2), so YMMV as usual

[Bug 204733] [NEW] Nautilus location bar does not show the correct folder when navigating using the main toolbar, and then Nautilus main window becomes unresponsive [Hardy Beta]

2008-03-21 Thread Phil Norbeck
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When quickly navigating the filesystem with the main toolbar, the location bar
can't keep up and displays the wrong folders. The Nautilus main
window then becomes unresponsive to clicks.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Nautilus

2. Go a few folders deep in the tree (for ex. I navigated to
/home/phil/Pictures/, but it can be anywhere)
* Notice how the folder contents displayed in the main window and the folder
indicated by the location bar both match.

3. Now using the main toolbar (larger buttons above the location bar),
double-click the 'Up' arrow quickly.
* You expect nautilus to navigate up two parent folders, since you clicked 'Up'
twice. However you'll notice that the main window
is correct (showing the contents of /home in my case), but the location bar
still shows the location only one parent folder up
(/home/phil/ in my ex.) as if it only registered a single click to the 'Up'
button.
* You'll also notice that now when you double-click on folders and files in the
main window that nothing happens.

Clicking the 'Up' button on the main toolbar slowly allows the location bar to
update correctly and does not freeze the main window.
I believe Nautilus should register a rapid succession of clicks. I guess this
is a responsiveness issue, but it is extremely annoying when
you're trying to quickly navigate the filesystem and the main window freezes.

[Bug 205716] [NEW] typo in foo2hp2600-wrapper causes printing failure

Public bug reported:

Today after installing Hardy Beta I could not print,

I am using the same HP Color LasterJet 2600n (kind of supported by

[Bug 185892] Re: instructions how to paste commands incorrect

2008-04-05 Thread Phil Bull
Hi Mads,

Thanks for the patch. I've reviewed it, and there were a couple of
spelling/grammar typos:

 * Rick Click = right click (typo, plus no need for capitals)
 * Middle Button Click on your mouse = click the middle button on your
mouse
 # also simply mark = also mark
 # Internet Browser = web browser
 # may or may not work = may not work

The ones marked with a # instead of a * are nitpicks, and so are so
trivially minor that you can probably happily ignore them.

BTW, why won't bzr let you make a new diff?

[Bug 207976] [NEW] gnome xfce interoperation -- X cannot load (hardy beta)

2008-03-27 Thread Phil Koh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xubuntu-desktop

I installed ubuntu hardy beta (old HP P3 500MHZ, on 26-03-2008).

Performed updates and was pretty ok (except screen resolution setting
was not kept between boots however and actually autodetect was too high
it caused fragmentation of image).

Then I installed xubuntu-desktop and vlc.

X would refuse to load. Trying six times then giving the 2min warning
on some occassions, on other occassions, not leaving the loading/wait
mouse cursor icon.

=== What I tried=
I tried loading a Gutsy live CD and copied the xorg.conf from the live CD to
replace the HD /etc/X11.
Still had X errors.
Hardy (bulletproofX?) overwrote the new xorg.conf so I recopied it and made it
read only (chmod 444).
Still X errors.

Then I gave up fighting bulletproofX... (it's probably so bullet proof
it's hard to override).

Installed Xubuntu instead (do without the ubuntu-desktop)

At bare minimum: if xubuntu and ubuntu do handle the loading of X
settings in a way that conflicts, perhaps we would want to put a warning
on the xubuntu-desktop and the ubuntu-desktop descriptions in the
repositories.

[Bug 211152] [NEW] OpenOffice.org Writer crashes when editing Page Style in html documents

2008-04-02 Thread Phil Norbeck
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

OpenOffice.org Writer is crashing everytime I try to edit the page style
in a new html document.

Steps to Reproduce:
1) File - New - HTML Document

(Or select Format - Page from the menubar)
3) Click the page tab.
OpenOffice Writer immediately crashes and displays the OpenOffice.org Document

[Bug 213104] Re: Package internet in ubuntu-docs: press return instead of press enter

2008-04-09 Thread Phil Bull
Thanks for reporting this bug. Return seems to be the standard name
for this key - not all keyboards have an Enter key (the one on the
numeric keypad), but many do call the Return key Enter. As such, I
don't think that the term should be changed.

[Bug 211152] Re: OpenOffice.org Writer crashes when editing Page Style in html documents

2008-04-10 Thread Phil Norbeck
Ok I'm now getting the exact same problem on my desktop and laptop using
the Hardy daily build AMD64 version
(http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/hardy-alternate-amd64.iso
09-Apr-2008 07:32).

I get the problem on a clean install on both machines AND during the
Live CD session (also on both machines). This makes me think that the
bug can't be just me. Do I have log files or the like that I could
attach that might help out? Shouldn't a bug like this be of some great
interest to the developers?

[Bug 216134] Re: Kernel make broken: No rule to make target `arch/i386/kernel/asm-offsets.c'

2008-04-12 Thread Phil Norbeck
I'm not getting that problem with either Ubuntu's kernel source
(2.6.24.2) or the current stable vanilla kernel source (2.6.24.4).
Maybe you missed something.

My steps:
1) Upacked linux-2.6.24.2.tar.bz2 and linux-2.6.24.4.tar.bz2 to their own
respective folders (/home/$USER/linux-2.6.24.2 and /home/$USER/linux-2.6.24.4)
2) Ran 'make mrproper' in each source folder to make sure they were cleaned out
(the compiler will complain if you don't do this).
3) Ran 'make ARCH=$(uname -m) defconfig' to quickly produce a default
configuration for my architecture. Did this for both kernel versions.
3) Ran the compile process 'make' for both versions.

Part of the output:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/linux-2.6.24.2$ make
scripts/kconfig/conf -s arch/x86/Kconfig
  CHK include/linux/version.h
  UPD include/linux/version.h
  CHK include/linux/utsrelease.h
  UPD include/linux/utsrelease.h
  SYMLINK include/asm - include/asm-x86
  CC arch/x86/kernel/asm-offsets.s
  GEN include/asm-x86/asm-offsets.h
  CALLscripts/checksyscalls.sh
  CC scripts/mod/empty.o
  HOSTCC scripts/mod/mk_elfconfig
  MKELF scripts/mod/elfconfig.h
...compile process keeps on rollin'

Compile process proceeded without errors for both kernel versions from
start to finish.

This is a FIREBUG issue, as the actual web page loads fine and you can use
Google Reader (and other ajax apps), its just that firebug reports the response

Clean install of 8.04 - Clean install of firefox, new firefox profile,

IMPORT of old bookmarks.json

On first load: The icons for back, forward, refresh, home, stop are all
visible, the folder icons for folders in the bookmarks toolbar are all
visible.

Close firefox, then reopen, the icons are all gone. The icons for back,
forward, refresh, home, stop are NOT visible, the folder icons for
folders in the bookmarks toolbar are all visible.

I seem to be able to replicate this time and time again. sometimes the
icons load - especially (100%) after installing a new extension and
restarting firefox, but most of the time the icons are missing...

Thanks for taking a look

[Bug 192938] [NEW] GRUB won't install in text mode in hardy alpha 4

2008-02-18 Thread Phil Norbeck
Public bug reported:

Error occurs using Hardy alpha 4 (hardy-alternate-i386.iso), and yes the
cd md5sums match and CD was tested for defects.

Near the end of the text-mode install, during the step 'Install the GRUB
boot loader on a hard disk', the installation halts with an error:

GRUB installation failed
The 'grub' package failed to install into /target/. Without the GRUB boot
loader, the installed system will not boot.

Leaving me with two options: Go Back, or Continue.

Going back takes me to the 'Ubuntu installer main menu' where I can then choose
'Install the GRUB boot loader on a hard disk' to try again. It fails a second
time.
Selecting continue moves foward without the boot loader.

2008-02-18 Thread Phil Norbeck
Attempting to install LILO results in a similar error:

The lilo package failed to install into /target/. Installing LILO as a boot
loader is a required step. The install problem might however be unrelated to
LILO, so continuing the installation may be possible.
LILO installation failed. Continue anyway?

My issue appears to have resolved itself upon a restart of firefox,

I can't guarantee this isn't because firefox needed a restart anyway
after an update to one or more packages, so I'm taking myself off the CC

[Bug 147294] Re: 'Visual Effects' keyboard shortcuts not documented in help

2008-02-11 Thread Phil Bull
Hi Michael,

Thanks for the extensive patch, it looks really good. I found a few
reasonably minor issues which need to be addressed:

 * cursor, use the Super+1 = cursor, use Super+1
 * For keycombos, use the keycombo and keycap tags rather +, i.e.
Ctrl+Shift+Alt =
keycombokeycapCtrl/keycapkeycapShift/keycapkeycapAlt/keycap/keycombo
 * It is used to change viewports - as far as I can see, workspace should
be used instead of viewport. It might also be beneficial to create a link to
the GNOME documentation which explains what a workspace is.
 * By default there are, besides the core, the main plugins of Compiz as well
as the main and extra plugins of Compiz Fusion installed - the wording here
seems a bit confusing.
 * The sect2 sections you've used should all have an id.
 * The note about the Super key is important enough to be a separate note, or
at least its own paragraph.
 * Default: Initiate cube free rotation - this seems confusing, I'm not sure
what is meant
 * Perhaps change the title from Commands for default plugins to Keyboard
shortcuts for the default visual effects

[Bug 194894] [NEW] Hardy's Firefox reports version 1.9b3 in about:

2008-03-07 Thread Phil Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Ubuntu version: Hardy alpha 5
Package: firefox-3.0
Package version: 3.0~b3+nobinonly-0ubuntu2

Steps to reproduce:
1. Boot from Hardy Heron alpha 5 live CD.
2. From the Applications menu, select Internet Firefox 3 Web Browser.
3. Type about: in the URL bar and press return.

Expected result:
Firefox reports itself as version 3.0b3 in both the version string laid over
the logo and in the build identifier

Actual result:
Firefox shows version 1.9b3 overlaid on the logo, while correctly reporting
itself as ... Firefox/3.0b3 in the build identifier.

The contents of Firefox's about page can be found in the soon-to-be
attached PDF.

The version from Help About is not affected; it shows 3.0b3 correctly.

[Bug 199802] Re: [madwifi] NetworkManager 0.6.6-0ubuntu1 fails to connect to wireless network

2008-03-10 Thread Phil Estes
It should also be noted that this is a regression from gutsy (at least
on my atheros hardware). In gutsy both NM and wpa_supplicant paths
worked fine for WPA1/2, WEP, open connections to wireless networks.

In Hardy (at least alpha4-6 where I can confirm) *only* wpa_supplicant
(or iwconfig if you just want an open network) works for any type of
wireless connection-NM will do nothing with my wireless card, other than
show me available networks and ask for keys where necessary. For
potential time savings for other bug readers, the NM 0.7 pre packages
offered in a PPA that didn't make Hardy offer no benefit, so don't waste
your time.

[Bug 200794] [NEW] No penryn/4th gen macbook pro hotkey support in alpha 6

2008-03-10 Thread Phil Christs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gpomme

Release tested: Ubuntu Hardy Heron Alpha 6.
Problem Hardware: Penryn (4th Gen) Macbook Pro.
Problem Packages: pommed, gpomme.

I would very much like this Ubuntu LTS to fully support the latest
Macbook Pro hardware from the official repositories from release day.
The new macbook pro has new hotkeys that are currently unsupported by
the repository packages. These hotkeys require an update of the universe
packages pommed and gpomme from 1.15 to 1.16. Is this the right place to
ask for such an update?

[Bug 203082] [NEW] Some packages not removed during Hardy upgrade.

2008-03-17 Thread Phil Norbeck
Public bug reported:

During the distribution upgrade from gutsy to hardy some packages are
not removed.

gnome-btdownload
gthumb
openoffice.org-base
serpentine

These packages are no longer part of the 'ubuntu-desktop' package [or
are not installed by default] in hardy, so they should be removed with
other packages during the distribution upgrade. (Other packages are
removed, but why not these?)

*Tested when upgrading gutsy to hardy (daily build 3-16-08).

Yes--your patch fixes the issue--I'm back to the functionality I had in
gutsy where NM can manage my wireless network connections
(successfully). I believe I had seen that mentioned elsewhere--that
madwifi isn't supporting wext very well--so your patch makes sense that
it resolves the issue.
