[Bug 149952] Gutsy Regression: Nvidia Riva 128 not supported (Cairo errors)

2007-10-06 Thread Stefano Rivera
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nv

When I use a Nvidia Riva 128 in my LTSP client, the login screen comes
up (but looks like it's a low colour depth)

I can login, but then Gnome oscillates between the ubuntu theme and a
basic GNOME theme (blue style) and my .xsession-errors log fills up
with:

All my clients are riva 128. They will NOT work with 16 bit color.
It's a limitation of the nv driver and the hardware. Try man nv and
you should see the man page explicitly say the riva 128 won't do 16
bit color. You have to set them to use 24 bit color. In k12ltsp you
would have to edit /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf but I don't know how to
do it in Edubuntu.

RIght, forcing 24bit colour with: X_COLOR_DEPTH=24 in /etc/lts.conf did
the trick.

I think the nv driver should know about this, and force Riva 128s into
24bit mode.

Hi Anthony (2007.09.24_05:34:50_+0200)

Why not just create a kvm group, and only allow certain users to use it?

It's better than having to run it as root...

[Bug 138208] Lifera only saves state on clean exit

2007-09-08 Thread Stefano Rivera
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: liferea

Tested on Ubuntu gutsy/amd64:
ii  liferea1.4~rc3-1
  feed aggregator for GNOME

I run gutsy, so I'm experiencing a lot of X lockups and system crashes.
Unfortunatly lifera forgets what I've read in a session, if I don't
close it cleanly. X crashes don't help with this.

It used to handle unexpected shutdowns fine, so this is a regression of
sorts.

[Bug 138211] Saved searches can't search read items

2007-09-08 Thread Stefano Rivera
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: liferea

Tested on amd64/gutsy:
ii  liferea1.4~rc3-1
  feed aggregator for GNOME

Reason for finding this:
I read my feeds, using the unread items saved search. Sometimes I accidentally
skip past something I want to read, and then I have to go and find it in it's
feed. So I tried to create a Read items saved search.

It shows the same number of unread items in brackets next to it's name
as unreadread items, but it never shows any articles.

[Bug 134215] No splash screen for hibernate / resume

2007-08-23 Thread Stefano Rivera
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

This is a UI issue, and it's still present in Gutsy.

When hibernating, the user is dumped into a text VT, quite probably with
a few messages displayed on it. There is no progress information.

When resuming, the usplash progress bar just appears to hang, rather
than showing any sign of resume progress. Then suddenly, the screensaver
appears.

If you have a large amount of ram, hibernate resume can take quite a
while. This should be more transparent.

I'm reporting this from an Intel MacBook 2007, running gutsy/amd64.

[Bug 134221] No sound on MacBook (Intel HDA) with 2.6.22-10

2007-08-23 Thread Stefano Rivera
Public bug reported:

[Bug 136773] tls_cacertdir does not seem to work

2007-09-02 Thread Stefano Rivera
Public bug reported:

ii  libldap2   2.1.30-13.3
  OpenLDAP libraries
ii  libnss-ldap251-7.5
  NSS module for using LDAP as a naming service

I'm using a CAcert.org signed certificate, and this is my libnss-ldap.conf:
host ldap.rivera.co.za
base dc=owlsbarn,dc=rivera,dc=za,dc=net
ldap_version 3
pam_password exop
ssl start_tls
tls_cacertfile /etc/ssl/certs/cacert.org.pem

When I use tls_cacertfile /etc/ssl/certs/cacert.org.pem then it works
fine.

When I use tls_cacertdir /etc/ssl/certs it doesn't. I don't have any
broken symlinks in /etc/ssl/certs.

[Bug 22985] Re: [x700] fails to infer lvds for primary connector on acer ferrari 4005 | card detected, but driver fails to use right output port

2007-08-26 Thread Stefano Rivera
Tormod, This *definitely* works with both the i386/amd64 Gutsy Tribe 4
live CDs.

I was Testing on a Ferrari 4005WMLi (with a replaced motherboard).

I'll try Tribe 5 CDs tomorrow. They weren't mirrored here yet on
Friday...

Maybe my replaced motherboard helped, maybe there are several variants
around?

Can any other Ferrari owners confirm if it works or not?

[Bug 135067] /dev/kqemu is root-only - there should be a qemu group

2007-08-27 Thread Stefano Rivera
Public bug reported:

/dev/kqemu has unusable permissions. There should be a seperate group
created for qemu use? and the main user added to it. kvm does this.

This bug has existed as long as ubuntu has had qemu support.

I'm reporting it from gutsy/amd64. Aug 2007.

ii  kqemu-common   1.3.0~pre11-5
  Common files for the QEMU Accelerator module
ii  kqemu-modules-2.6.22-10-generic1.3.0~pre11-5+2.6.22-10.30
  kqemu modules for Linux (kernel 2.6.22-10-generic).
ii  kqemu-source   1.3.0~pre11-5
  Source for the QEMU Accelerator module
ii  udev   113-0ubuntu7
  rule-based device node and kernel event manager

$ ls -alhF /dev/kqemu
crw-rw 1 root root 10, 63 2007-08-27 15:50 /dev/kqemu

OTOH, kvm creates a kvm group, qemu should do that, too.
$ ls /dev/kvm -alhF
crw-rw 1 root kvm 10, 232 2007-08-27 06:54 /dev/kvm

this error nvidia hardware not available.

[Bug 131404] Unset keycodes on Acer Ferrari 4005 (and acer in general)

2007-08-09 Thread Stefano Rivera
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hotkey-setup

Full list at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/AcerFerrari4005WLMi

Quite a few of them are generic many all acer laptops, and have already been
reported:
* bug 30562: €, $ keys
* bug 20463: eSetting, ePowerManagement keys
* bug 57849: WiFi killswitch

Some of the keys don't have their keycodes set, and only appear in kernel logs,
it would be nice to be able to assign events to them:
* Fn+F2 0xa6 eSetting
* Fn+F3 0xa7 ePowerManagement
* Fn+F5 0xa9 CRT/LCD
* Fn+F7 0xf2 0xf1 Touchpad lock
* Fn+Right 0xee Backlight++
* € 0xb3
* $ 0xb4
* Bluetooth 0x57 0x58
* WiFi 0x55 0x56

Gnome should display notifications that the following keys have been pressed, I
know it doesn't have support for them at the moment, but users expect them to
work:
* Touchpad lock: Should display a suitable message / icon
* Backlight +/-: Should display a suitable message / icon (HAL controlled
backlight does, on other laptops)
* Bluetooth killswitch: Should display a suitable message / icon
* WiFi killswitch: Should display a suitable message / icon

The cause is *not* obvious (the wifi light still flashes). You have to
go into kernel logs to see what has happened.

Maybe network-manager should have hooks on this?

[Bug 57849] Re: Add keycodes for wireless button on Acer Travelmate 8100

2007-08-10 Thread Stefano Rivera
In fact, the correct response (for atheros cards) would be to rmmod
ath_pci, and modprobe ath_pci.

If you don't do this, then the wifi still doesn't work after you unkill
the wireless...
