RIght, forcing 24bit colour with: X_COLOR_DEPTH=24 in /etc/lts.conf did the trick. [Bug 134215] No splash screen for hibernate / resume

When hibernating, the user is dumped into a text VT, quite probably with a few messages displayed on it. There is no progress information. When resuming, the usplash progress bar just appears to hang, rather than showing any sign of resume progress. Then suddenly, the screensaver appears. This should *definitly* bring up some kind of notification. Pressing the wireless button is easy to do by accident, and suddently it stops working. The cause is *not* obvious (the wifi light still flashes). You have to go into kernel logs to see what has happened.
