Ok, I stand corrected. I wasn't aware of any plans to undertake
implementation, but sounds like you have a much better handle on the
state of things than I. I'm happy to hear there are already efforts in
play, so will withdraw this topic proposal as it is not my intention to
cause any delays in this. I'll leave the driving to whomever's working
on it.

Nothing about it requires either full implementation all at once, or
full-time developers.

I did not say that, and it is not the case. (And even if it was the
case, that would not be grounds for delaying it.)

Great. We are twelve years behind the competition on this; let's not
invent reasons to procrastinate further.

No but the full implementation seems like a hefty amount of work and I
don't think anyone's going to be working implementation for this project
full time. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Like mpt said, it's been discussed now for a couple years but there
hasn't been that much progress. A proof of concept would at least help
in getting the design nailed down. If there's manpower available to do
more than that, well that would be great. I too would love to see this
available in some form or other for the LTS.

Not by those who are working on it, that's for sure. It was targeted
for Oneiric, and there's no reason to delay it for an entire year.

Re: [Desktop12.04-Topic] Crash Database

2011-10-08 Thread Dereck Wonnacott
I think this database would be just plain awesome! Some thoughts from the
peanut gallery:

I frequently don't submit crashes to launchpad because #1 I don't have time,
or #2 am lacking an Internet connection at the time, so

* If the system is configured to "report statistical data" in software
sources can we assume that it's alright to collect crash data too? (#1)
* If it wasn't selected during install, perhaps we can ask after the first
crash.
* we could save the apport crash reports into a directory so that when an
internet connection is detected, a queue of crash reports can be uploaded at
once. (#2)

I think the whole thing should be as automatic as possible to get the most
complete record of crashes as possible.

Is that decided? I was really hoping that we could get this for P as
being able to keep crash reporting on after release would really help
with successive LTS minor versions.

Is there a way we could simplify the server side (just make it a generic
frontend for Launchpad) to make the desktop side a reasonable
deliverable for P?
