Before you run UDS sessions, your documentation should be good enough
that a person doesn't need to attend a session. I've discussed this
 with Max a bit.

Indeed that's part of the improvements we will be trying to make. Any
specific feedback you have on what's missing would be useful to help us
improve it.. after so many conversations on how the tool works and what
the main concepts are, we have lost sight of things that may be
 obviously missing for end users.

One thing Max mentioned in the meeting and I forgot to add, is that we
should not assume any QA background on the people using the tool, so all
concepts should be clearly explained. Any other thing you can think off,
specifically, that would make your life easier?

 1. It would be really helpful to have the equivalent of hello world. A
step by step:
  . Create directory x here.
  . in directory x create file y
  . create directory y
  . etc.

 2. Document the purpose of every configuration file.

 3. Document every attribute of every configuration file. For example:
. fetch_cmd - what is it, is it required, why is it required.
. runlist - same questions plus, it has list in its name so
how do i specify a list?

 4. Show an example (hello world) on how to run the tests locally without
needing to do provisioning.

 5. Don't use terms/adjectives like Cool (it just doesn't sound professional)

These all seem like obvious things to document.

 Brad

And get the documentation onto a ubuntu.com website. I know it's a pita
to deal with IS on these things but you are going to get nothing but
grief from people if you don't. It's best to just nip that in the bud.

Following all the excitement around better integrating automated

Testing in Ubuntu Birds of a Feather session at UDS-P. It will take
place at 7pm on Wednesday night. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

We're looking for volunteers to give 5 minute lightning talks on cool
things they've come across, created, or big ideas they have, as they
relate to automated testing. It doesn't have to be Ubuntu-specific,
but please pick a topic that would be helpful to those developing
Ubuntu infrastructure.

Even,

I think this is a great idea. However, I'd like to see it done during
the day. I think testing is important enough it shouldn't be relegated
to an after hours event.

Personally, I'd like to see more BoFs at UDS.

I echo Chase's opinion in this regard; we should remain flexible in
adapting our approval processes.

The only thing I add is that we should be cognizant of building a
timeout into the process using Launchpad so that applications don't
spin indefinitely, e.g., the stale five-digit Launchpad bug
report.

You could use the model the kernel team is using for tracking workflow for
SRU kernels. We have a project set up and a set of custom series that are
used for tracking the workflow. A bot runs at regular intervals sending
out nags if necessary or changing the status of a workflow item as previous
dependencies are met.

That's interesting. How are custom bug series managed? I admin a few
projects on LP, but I can't find any way of doing this.

-- Chase

You can just make up your own names. If you go to:
https://launchpad.net/kernel-sru-workflow
you can see them all. You just Register a series to add another. Note, when
listed on a
bug report as a task, the tasks are listed alphabetically.

 * First item is what to do with the Oneiric Bug Handling blueprint
  * The majority of remaining work items center around our bug tooling and are
not release critical. IMO we don't really want/need this to be on the agenda
each week. Thoughts?
  * We are going to be doing what we can using tooling and the rest add hock
  * I'll look over the blueprint and see where i can help out

To be fair the only real issue we had with Gobby last time was that the
server kept crashing due to a bug (iirc it occurred when someone tried
to delete a document).

If that's fixed, it should perform just as well as Gobby in old UDSes,
which seemed to work well enough.

Etherpad is still better though, eg due to playback feature and easier
web participation.

Heh, you and I must be attending different UDSs. UDS-O will be my 5th
and I don't think there has been a UDS where we haven't had issues with
Gobby.

=== Incoming Bugs: Bug day report ===
My effort last week was a bit different as I did not advertise the bug day in
the same way I normally do. In this last case,
I directly pinged those parties that have provided the majority of the bug
triage during our normally advertised bug days.
I also pressed those who continually ask me to review bugs (other than through
the normal channels) to asist us in triaging
those bugs that they are bringing to my attention. It doesn't seem to have had
the desired effect, so I'll be going back to
the e-mail and blog/tweet for advertisement of our bug days. The next bug day
will be next Tuesday. We will be focusing on
regression-release bugs in all status starting with the new state.

=== Triage Status  ===
I didn't do much in the way of triage for the past week, nor did I interact
heavily with our triagers due to the need to plan
for UDS a bit and to get my schedule in order for all of the tasks yet to do in
this cycle. This week will likely be the same
as I will be working ot implement the plan and close out my remaining tasks
while drafting blueprint information for the O UDS.

=== Open Discussion or Questions ===
 * (kamal) thanks ogasawara for the ubuntu-oneiric.git repo ... the Oneiric
2.6.39 kernel builds and works great on Natty!

=== Status: HW Cert. Team ===
This week we finised testing both the Maverick and the Lucid kernel. Results
are publicly available:
All the 75 systems passed the SRU tests (the minor errors are problems with the

So, from our side, they are good to go.
We updated the tracking bugs with this information as well.

Last week's bug day was a success. We had several individuals helping to triage
new state bugs and we got a number of them triaged and into the proper status.
The next bug day will be next Tuesday. The focus will be on bugs in the
confirmed state.

=== Triage Status  ===
There is always tremendous interest in having me look at a particular bug here
and there.
I am still working to get these interested parties to approach me in the
pulblic channel
versus currently getting pinged in private windows.
We have had some further interest in working bugs from individuals geared
toward beginning
device driver and module work. As much as it pains me, we had to explain that
bugs were
likely not the best way to go to get into module development. :-)

Note - There is a new live(ish) web page that displays the kernel versions in a
format similar to that above, without the bug verification counts. That page is
here: https://kernel-tools.canonical.com/versions.html. The page is updated
every 15 minutes.

=== Incoming Bugs: Bug day report ===
The next bug day will be next week. I'd like for that one to focus on
regression-proposed bugs
since the ones that I have on my list have been there too long to be seriously
considered as legitimate
bugs in the proposed queue. I've decided to use this small segment of bugs due
to the majority
of interested people being on holiday.

=== Triage Status  ===
I have begun testing the script that replaces one tag with another. There is a
pre-existing script
that bjf made me aware of, and I am looking at that for some of the other
scripts I have/had planned.

=== Open Discussion or Questions: Raise your hand to be recognized ===
  * One thing i'd like to point out is that this will be the last irc meeting
of this year, the next will likely be Jan. 4, 2011
  * The entire team wished everyone Happy Holidays!! Hope you enjoy your
vacations.

Ubuntu Kernel Team Meeting Minutes - 2010-11-16

2010-11-16 Thread Brad Figg
the help and understanding. This first test run through the
process steps has been very labor intensive, slow, and error prone.
* We are refining the process as we go. Details are being maintained on the
wiki page linked above.
* Martin Pitt has agreed to change the verification tagging for bugs to
verification=[needed|failed|done]-release
in order to help us track verification in different released kernels within
the same bug.

Reverted patches will be reapplied once the appropriate action is taken in the
bug report. For specific details see:

=== Incoming Bugs: Bug day report ===
The next Kernel Bug Day will be next Tuesday. The focus will be on bugs with
patches attached
in order to begin the serious amount of work to be done there. I am planning to
work with Andy
and Tim this week to see how we will handle Team Bug Days since we are changing
the way we do
the Top Bugs each week. I will also begin working up a weekly report of the
major bugs we are looking at.
Chances are I will make some of that data available during this meeting going
forward.
BR
BR
Please note that if we take any of those patches, we either need the HW to
verify them or have a commitment from the community to verify them or they
weill be reverted

=== Triage Status  ===
I talked with a number of the folks we work with to triage bugs during UDS,
but, other than that,
I have nothing to report on as far as status. I am, however, interested in your
thoughts on holding
another Kernel Triage Summit. We could do our own again, or we can make it a
part of one of the
community events such as Ubuntu Developer Week, Open Week, etc.
BR
BR
Based on all the effort that you've put into getting community involvement, did
we get any value or would you have been better off just doing that amount of
effort in triaging yourself?
BR
BR
We saw some benefit, but I think it is too early to tell the impact. I'd have
to defer to those who presented and attended as to the usefulness. I felt it
was a success, more so than I had hoped for.
BR
BR
I'm asking about community triaging in general
BR
BR
We saw some improvement, but I don't know if it was commensurate with the
effort involved in organizing our own.
In summary I think I could have just done the triage effort myself.

Noting new this week.
