Fwd: ceph: dropping support for armhf
Forwarding to -devel for wider discussion -- Forwarded message - From: James Page Date: Wed, May 12, 2021 at 10:00 AM Subject: ceph: dropping support for armhf To: ubuntu-server Hi -server Every cycle we go through a bit/lot of pain as new versions of Ceph are released; the upstream project does zero testing on 32 bit architectures so a new drop of the Ceph source package normally results in several long iterations (due to the build time of ceph) to identify and resolve 32 != 64 bit type issues across the new delta in the code base. I'd like to propose dropping armhf (as the last 32 bit architecture in Ubuntu) as an architecture Ceph is built for; there are a number of reverse depends which would need an update as well: fio libvirt nfs-ganesha qemu tcmu-runner tgt uwsgi I'd also like to understand whether there is actually any subset of users actually using the armhf packages that Ubuntu provides for Ceph! [sru] OpenStack SRU's - add OVN to supporting projects list
Hi SRU Team I've made/proposed an update to: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/OpenStack/StableReleaseUpdates For 20.04, OVN is the default/preferred SDN for OpenStack deployments on Ubuntu; as such we'd like to include it in the SRU process we have for stable point releases alongside OpenvSwitch. We have appropriate deployment and testing tooling to cover OVN as part of an OpenStack deployment in the same way that we do Neutron ML2/OVS for earlier releases. First usage of this will be: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ovn/+bug/1897248 Please could a member of the SRU team review and approve our proposed update to the list of supporting packages. I think I've also seen a sqlite in memory based set of unit test failures in Neutron which I've never been able to pin down but again it feels like memory contention within the builder. Upstream don't see the same thing, but their minimum spec for a unit testing machine is >=8G. -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel
Launchpad builders - increasing memory spec
Hi All Mathias and I where discussing some challenges around fitting the Ceph build with any level of parallelism in to a virtualized launchpad builder (as used for the majority of architectures today). Basically the current memory spec only permits a max-parallel of 2 (on Xenial amd64). Ceph is a big C++ project so takes some time to build with such a low level of parallelism. Would it be possible to nudge up the default memory allocation on the builders? I use a 16G machine for test builds of i386/amd64 and I've not seen any memory exhaustion with parallel=8. Or maybe have a mechanism to allow a source package to request a higher spec of builder? Thoughts? sqlalchemy 1.1 for artful
Hi All sqlalchemy 1.0.x has been creating some awkward unit test races in some OpenStack projects (specifically neutron, and I'm fed up of hitting rebuild); I've started work on the transition to sqlalchemy 1.1.x for artful in: https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu/2739/+packages reverse-depends currently have versioned Depends on sqlachemy - a no-change rebuild is required to update those. Potential Server Seed impact for 14.04: removal of OpenJDK/Tomcat7 from Ubuntu main
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA256 Hi Folks The first round of seed review changes have now been applied to the server seeds; quite a few bits have dropped out of main and the size of the server ISO has reduced! Next - the foundations team have been reviewing whether we should continue to provide OpenJDK as the default Java implementation in Ubuntu; this package is quite a resource drain on both the foundations and security teams from a SRU perspective so demotion of openjdk7 to universe is being considered. Most Java-ish things in main can be built using gcj; however Tomcat7 is not going to work with gcj so would end up being demoted as well. What do people think to this plan? Are OpenJDK and Tomcat7 important packages for Ubuntu users? Will not having a well supported OpenJDK implementation in Ubuntu main discourage people from using Ubuntu to host their Java based applications? Or do users still just use the Oracle Java downloads instead and ignore what Ubuntu provides? Let me know what you think... In this case we might be best to actually push in a new upstream release of open-vm-tools and do some good testing on it - its probably lower risk. lp:~valavanisalex/ubuntu/saucy/inkscape/fix-1194855 - Uploaded Length at end: 32 -- James Page Ubuntu Core Developer Debian Maintainer james.p...@ubuntu.com -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel

Call for Testing: Java Applications with OpenJDK7
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA256 Hi All For Quantal the default implementation of Java has been switched from OpenJDK 6 to OpenJDK 7 in-line with objectives agreed in [1]. This basically means that if you install default-[jdk|jre|jre-headless] or you install OpenJDK 6 and 7 then Ubuntu will prefer OpenJDK 7 by default. This is an important change as OpenJDK 7 is much more closely aligned with Oracle Java 7; performance and compatibility should be comparable on x86 based architectures. This change has been in place for some time now but as we approach Beta-2 it would be great if anyone who uses Java on a regular basis, either for development or to run applications, could do some more extended testing to ensure that this transition is still going nice and smoothly. If you find any problems please report bugs and tag with 'java7-regression-potential'. We still have a few outstanding FTBFS with OpenJDK 7 as default Java - see [2] if you have some time to help out. There are also have a large number of potential bytecode compatibility issues (packages which build with OpenJDK 7 but don't set the flags to ensure that the code built is compatible with Java 6 as well) - see [3] for the full list of impacted packages which when re-built exhibit this problem. I'm also in the progress of assessing the binary packages already in the archive for quantal which might already have this issue (which should be fixed as a priority). See [4] for more details on how to resolve both of these types of issues. Thanks in advance for any time you can spare either testing or fixing bugs. I don't think this is a challenge with bugs (although it could be more explicit in the Code Review docs). Merge proposals create more of a challenge as I'm unable to set 'Fix Committed' in the same way so they just lurk around until they get 'Merged' which could take some time. Not sure we can do to much about that. -- James Page Ubuntu Core Developer Debian Maintainer james.p...@ubuntu.com -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel

Quantal Java 7 Transition
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA256 Hi All During the Quantal development cycle we will be transitioning as many Java packages as possible to OpenJDK 7 (see [0]). As Mathias highlighted during the opening of Quantal (see [1]), OpenJDK 7 is now used as default for packages depending on default-[jdk,jre,jre-headless] - so any packages that rely on default-jdk will automatically build with this new version of Java. Out of the 900 packages in the archive that build-depend on default-jdk, 90 currently FTBFS - see [2] (probably due to this switch but some may be caused by other issues - I have not reviewed all 90 build failures). I'll be working through these failures during this development cycle; it would be great if anyone who has some time could help out as well - see [3] for some help on fixing Java 7 FTBFS and how to report bugs back to Debian with the correct user tags so that the Debian Java team can pick them up. OpenJDK 6 will remain in the archive but will be pushed to universe in favour of OpenJDK 7 so can still be used as a last resort for anything that can't/won't be transitioned before release. Any help much appreciated. Notes from my first patch pilot slot on Tuesday this week. lp:~lynxman/ubuntu/oneiric/apache2/fixeddefaultsite Minor behavioural change to default apache2 virtualhost/site; does not actually resolve the associated bug and not really worth merging as increases the delta with Debian and changes default behaviour. I've just uploaded a new version of the etherpad package to this PPA; it removes the majority of bundled Java dependencies (aside from a patched version of yuicompressor; ran out of time to look at this last night) and links to Java libraries in the main archive. Hi Dustin I started to take a look at the bundled Java dependencies last week; it looked like all but 3 of them could be fulfilled through existing Java libraries in the archive. Happy to integrate this into the packaging - do you have a branch I can work against? > James, is this a reasonable starting point? I think that pushing a JavaLibraryFreeze as close as possible to the DebianImportFreeze makes alot of sense as it gives a clear period of stability prior to FeatureFreeze to ensure that dependent stacks can resolve any integration/library issues that new versions of Java libraries may cause; as Dave points out late sync's from Debian in the Maverick cycle caused a-lot of pain which could potentially have been avoided by taking this approach. We should then take a FFe style approach post JavaLibraryFreeze to ensure that any bugs/syncs/merge activity do not have significant impact on dependent stacks; here's a starter for ten on when to reject a Java Library update post this freeze point: 1) major version upgrade e.g. version 1.0.18 -> 2.0.xx Should give some stability (but not guaranteed) for API compatibility. 2) introduction of new dependencies implying new features Reduces the risk that a main Java library starts pulling in universe dependencies which would required MIR's; we had examples of this in Maverick (see [1]) which where patched out due to potential impact and lack of time. 3) potential for impact on key stacks such as Eucalyptus/UEC Dave's referenced bug [0] is a good example where this was picked up pro-actively and blocked for Maverick. Some of these issues should be resolvable by having a specific focus prior to the DebianImportFreeze (and JavaLibraryFreeze) on ensuring that the key Java dependencies for core stacks are in a good state in terms of upgrades/MIR's which should reduce the potential for having to go through a JavaLibraryFreeze exception. As my specific focus in Ubuntu is on Java libraries and stacks I'm happy to pick-up coordination of this pre-freeze activity and act as a point of reference for any freeze exceptions in terms of impact assessment etc. [0] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/614981 [1] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/552613 -- James Page Software Engineer, Ubuntu Server Team signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel
