Subject: ceph: dropping support for armhf
To: ubuntu-server

Hi -server

Every cycle we go through a bit/lot of pain as new versions of Ceph are
released; the upstream project does zero testing on 32 bit architectures so
a new drop of the Ceph source package normally results in several long
iterations (due to the build time of ceph) to identify and resolve 32 != 64
bit type issues across the new delta in the code base.

I'd like to propose dropping armhf (as the last 32 bit architecture in
Ubuntu) as an architecture Ceph is built for; there are a number of reverse
depends which would need an update as well:

fio
libvirt
nfs-ganesha
qemu
tcmu-runner
tgt
uwsgi

I'd also like to understand whether there is actually any subset of users
actually using the armhf packages that Ubuntu provides for Ceph!

Cheers

[sru] OpenStack SRU's - add OVN to supporting projects list

2020-09-25 Thread James Page
Hi SRU Team

I've made/proposed an update to:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/OpenStack/StableReleaseUpdates

For 20.04, OVN is the default/preferred SDN for OpenStack deployments on
Ubuntu; as such we'd like to include it in the SRU process we have for
stable point releases alongside OpenvSwitch.

We have appropriate deployment and testing tooling to cover OVN as part of
an OpenStack deployment in the same way that we do Neutron ML2/OVS for
earlier releases.

First usage of this will be:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ovn/+bug/1897248

Please could a member of the SRU team review and approve our proposed
update to the list of supporting packages.

Regards

James

Builders are currently 4G then with 4 cores? maybe a doubling might be a
more sensible proposal to start with.

I think I've also seen a sqlite in memory based set of unit test failures
in Neutron which I've never been able to pin down but again it feels like
memory contention within the builder.

Upstream don't see the same thing, but their minimum spec for a unit
testing machine is >=8G.

Launchpad builders - increasing memory spec

2017-07-04 Thread James Page
Hi All

Mathias and I where discussing some challenges around fitting the Ceph
build with any level of parallelism in to a virtualized launchpad builder
(as used for the majority of architectures today).

Basically the current memory spec only permits a max-parallel of 2 (on
Xenial amd64). Ceph is a big C++ project so takes some time to build with
such a low level of parallelism.

Would it be possible to nudge up the default memory allocation on the
builders? I use a 16G machine for test builds of i386/amd64 and I've not
seen any memory exhaustion with parallel=8.

Or maybe have a mechanism to allow a source package to request a higher
spec of builder?

Thoughts?

sqlalchemy 1.1 for artful

2017-04-28 Thread James Page
Hi All

sqlalchemy 1.0.x has been creating some awkward unit test races in some
OpenStack projects (specifically neutron, and I'm fed up of hitting
rebuild); I've started work on the transition to sqlalchemy 1.1.x for
artful in:

  https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu/2739/+packages

reverse-depends currently have versioned Depends on sqlachemy - a no-change
rebuild is required to update those.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this post both on and off list; as
I expected, quite a few users depend on a well supported OpenJDK in
Ubuntu in preference to using binary downloads from Oracle.

Ubuntu 14.04 will ship with both OpenJDK 7 and Tomcat 7 in Ubuntu main.

Potential Server Seed impact for 14.04: removal of OpenJDK/Tomcat7 from Ubuntu main

2014-01-21 Thread James Page
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi Folks

The first round of seed review changes have now been applied to the
server seeds; quite a few bits have dropped out of main and the size
of the server ISO has reduced!

Next - the foundations team have been reviewing whether we should
continue to provide OpenJDK as the default Java implementation in
Ubuntu; this package is quite a resource drain on both the foundations
and security teams from a SRU perspective so demotion of openjdk7 to
universe is being considered.

Most Java-ish things in main can be built using gcj; however Tomcat7
is not going to work with gcj so would end up being demoted as well.

What do people think to this plan? Are OpenJDK and Tomcat7 important
packages for Ubuntu users? Will not having a well supported OpenJDK
implementation in Ubuntu main discourage people from using Ubuntu to
host their Java based applications? Or do users still just use the
Oracle Java downloads instead and ignore what Ubuntu provides?

Let me know what you think...

Cheers

Ubuntu Server seeded package review

2013-12-03 Thread James Page
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi Folks

As part of tidying for the next LTS release, the Server Team are
proposing a review of server released seeded packages that are
currently in Ubuntu main (proposed changes tracked in [0] for now).

Here's the initial review of seeds, and some proposed moves and drops
we are considering:

Branch:
https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu-seeds/ubuntu.trusty

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu-seeds/ubuntu.trusty/view/head:/server

Description: Default server install

whoopsie (ack'ed by ev)
wireless-tools
wpasupplicant

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu-seeds/ubuntu.trusty/view/head:/server-ship

Description: Server ISO image

nut, nut-cgi, nut-snmp (move to supported-misc-servers)
likewise-open (largely unmaintained in distro -
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LikewiseOpen)
powernap, powernap-server (still revelvant?)
quagga (maybe move to supported-misc-servers)
backuppc
python-beautifulsoup
python-genshi (will be pulled into main via supported-misc-servers ...
python-pecan)
whoopsie (ack'ed by ev)
mutt

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu-seeds/ubuntu.trusty/view/head:/cloud-image

Description: Default cloud-image install

whoopsie (ack'ed by ev)
tasksel (drops aptitude etc.)
euca2ools (move to supported-misc-servers)

Branch:
https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu-seeds/platform.trusty

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu-seeds/platform.trusty/view/head:/supported-misc-servers

Description: Other supported stuff which is not on the ISO

No candidates identified

And a few other packages that we'd like to not be part of the cloud
images (which include the 'cloud-image' and 'server' seeds). These
are not explicitly listed in either of these seeds but are pulled in
due to dependencies or Recommends.

ppp
usbutils
os-prober
aptitude
memtest86

... and discuss!

I'd like to land any changes early in 2014 prior to feature freeze.

Cheers

James

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/jsch/+bug/1249591

pinged bug reporter to see if they where OK todo the MIR as well.

Needs re-basing for Havana; pinged reporter, unsubscribed
ubuntu-sponsors until ready for review.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/horizon/+bug/981269

requested that a more complete cherry-pick be done before upload to
proposed; unsubscribed sponsors for the time being.

which is much less resource intensive for such a common operation.
Marked WIP.

  Already merged; marked so.

Patch Pilot Report 20130702

2013-07-02 Thread James Page

Length at start: 40

https://code.launchpad.net/~utlemming/ubuntu/saucy/walinuxagent/udev.lp1188753/+merge/168804
  - Uploaded

https://code.launchpad.net/~yolanda.robla/ubuntu/saucy/bind9/server_banner/+merge/171513
  - Queried back to proposer about one part of change.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/json-glib/+bug/1195056
  - Synced

https://code.launchpad.net/~yolanda.robla/ubuntu/saucy/ipxe/ftbfs/+merge/171754
  - Requested that patch origin be documented - its from upstream but
its not clear from either the changelog or the patch itself.

  - Branch updated; tested and uploaded.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/java-common/+bug/1195756
  - Synced

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/heimdal/+bug/1191704
  - Good start but patches need some work; pointed author towards the
SRU process with some initial guidance and un-subbed sponsors.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/quantal/+source/liblockfile/+bug/1011477
https://code.launchpad.net/~gandelman-a/ubuntu/quantal/liblockfile/lp941968/+merge/171150
  - Uploaded

https://code.launchpad.net/~logan/ubuntu/saucy/efibootmgr/0.5.4-6ubuntu1/+merge/169572
  - Checked with cjwatson on this one; OK to merge but should change
into a sync as soon as his patch is accepted into Debian.

  - Uploaded

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pdfsam/+bug/1167469
  - Checked this bug prior to reviewing patch; has already been fixed
via a different route in Debian; marked invalid and thanked author for
his work, explaining why it was not longer required.

lp:~n-muench/ubuntu/precise/open-vm-tools/open-vm-tools.quantal-modules.backport
  - I started on this and got completely lost; I think this MP really
illustrates the challenges of the hardware enablement kernels in 12.04
with regards to DKMS packages especially when there is no access to the
upstream VCS to support cherry picking of fixes. In this case we might
be best to actually push in a new upstream release of open-vm-tools and
do some good testing on it - its probably lower risk.

Call for Testing: Java Applications with OpenJDK7

2012-09-21 Thread James Page
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi All

For Quantal the default implementation of Java has been switched from
OpenJDK 6 to OpenJDK 7 in-line with objectives agreed in [1].

This basically means that if you install
default-[jdk|jre|jre-headless] or you install OpenJDK 6 and 7 then
Ubuntu will prefer OpenJDK 7 by default.

This is an important change as OpenJDK 7 is much more closely aligned
with Oracle Java 7; performance and compatibility should be comparable
on x86 based architectures.

This change has been in place for some time now but as we approach
Beta-2 it would be great if anyone who uses Java on a regular basis,
either for development or to run applications, could do some more
extended testing to ensure that this transition is still going nice
and smoothly. If you find any problems please report bugs and tag
with 'java7-regression-potential'.

We still have a few outstanding FTBFS with OpenJDK 7 as default Java -
see [2] if you have some time to help out.

There are also have a large number of potential bytecode compatibility
issues (packages which build with OpenJDK 7 but don't set the flags to
ensure that the code built is compatible with Java 6 as well) - see
[3] for the full list of impacted packages which when re-built exhibit
this problem. I'm also in the progress of assessing the binary
packages already in the archive for quantal which might already have
this issue (which should be fixed as a priority).

See [4] for more details on how to resolve both of these types of issues.

Thanks in advance for any time you can spare either testing or fixing
bugs.

Cheers

James

I don't think this is a challenge with bugs (although it could be more
explicit in the Code Review docs). Merge proposals create more of a
challenge as I'm unable to set 'Fix Committed' in the same way so they
just lurk around until they get 'Merged' which could take some time.

Not sure we can do to much about that.

   - Uploaded.

Comment for the day:

SRU's which have been uploaded but not accepted are hard to
differentiate on the report - they don't require any further sponsor
action so it would be good to be able to filter those out if possible.

Cheers

Quantal Java 7 Transition

2012-06-06 Thread James Page
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi All

During the Quantal development cycle we will be transitioning as many
Java packages as possible to OpenJDK 7 (see [0]).

As Mathias highlighted during the opening of Quantal (see [1]),
OpenJDK 7 is now used as default for packages depending on
default-[jdk,jre,jre-headless] - so any packages that rely on
default-jdk will automatically build with this new version of Java.

Out of the 900 packages in the archive that build-depend on
default-jdk, 90 currently FTBFS - see [2] (probably due to this switch
but some may be caused by other issues - I have not reviewed all 90
build failures).

I'll be working through these failures during this development cycle;
it would be great if anyone who has some time could help out as well -
see [3] for some help on fixing Java 7 FTBFS and how to report bugs
back to Debian with the correct user tags so that the Debian Java team
can pick them up.

OpenJDK 6 will remain in the archive but will be pushed to universe in
favour of OpenJDK 7 so can still be used as a last resort for anything
that can't/won't be transitioned before release.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

James

Patch Pilot Report 20120521

2012-05-21 Thread James Page

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/munin/+bug/598385
  - Review revised patch for quantal and uploaded alongside bug
https://pad.lv/1000678
  - Nominated for 12.04 - SRU information needs more work.
  - Worked with vibhav to prepare SRU information + uploaded to
precise-proposed.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mosh/+bug/985981
  - Re-based to version in quantal and uploaded.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cfitsio3/+bug/1001572
  - Uploaded

https://code.launchpad.net/~kroq-gar78/ubuntu/precise/activemq/sid-merge/+merge/106539
  - Merge from Debian testing for SRU - not appropriate and not
correct either so pointed the proposer at the SRU process with some
general guidance - also commented in bug.

https://code.launchpad.net/~kroq-gar78/ubuntu/quantal/activemq/sid-merge/+merge/106540
  - Disapprove - package can now be synced from Debian testing -
however it FTBFS due to the switch to openjdk-7 as default Java in
Ubuntu only.
  - Synced the package instead with attribution to the proposer of
this merge - FTBFS due to Java 7 can be dealt with ontop of latest
Debian packaging changes.

@pilot out

Cheers

Patch Pilot Report 20120316

2012-03-16 Thread James Page
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Here's what I got up to today:

https://code.launchpad.net/~hggdh2/ubuntu/oneiric/cobbler/bug943000/+merge/95430
Tweaked patch tags slightly and uploaded to oneiric-proposed.

https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/oneiric/distribute/oneiric-updates/+merge/94896
Already uploaded - MP was strange as it was proposing merging
oneiric-updates into oneiric - fed back to proposer and asked them to
delete the MP.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/whois/+bug/943502
This bug report is a little confused as its unclear whether this is
an SRU or a request for a backport. I've asked the reporter to
confirm which is required and pointed him at the relevant processes.
Unsubscribed ubuntu-sponsors for the time being.

https://code.launchpad.net/~dereknance-413/ubuntu/oneiric/klogshow/fix-for-678153/+merge/96059
Package not in the archive for oneiric - asked proposer to withdraw MP.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cortina/+bug/948914
Not yet ready for review - needs a FFe however it is handled.
Unsubscribed ubuntu-sponsors for the time being and asked reporter to
resubscribe when ready.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nova/+bug/907152
Proposed changes to upstart configuration will break in some types
of deployment - provided feedback on bug report, unsubscribed
ubuntu-sponsors and suggested that reporter propose a more appropriate
fix against the ubuntu packaging branch owned by ubuntu-server-dev.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/puppet/+bug/950183
Covered by Merge Proposal - unsubscribed ubuntu-sponsors.

https://code.launchpad.net/~geoubuntu/ubuntu/precise/tvtime/tvtime.fix-372822+947845+947850+951473+more/+merge/96877
This one took sometime (its big); provided feedback on a couple of
specific issues and generally expressed concern about the number of
patches being carried for non-bug related trivial issues (compilation
warnings, typos in debug messages etc) - recommended the proposer
review. Marked 'Needs Fixing'

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ebox/+bug/928501
Pending final fix from upstream packagers; FFe approved and
archive-admin ready to review; I will pick up sponsoring the uploads
when ready (as I have done most of the review to-date). Unsubscribed
ubuntu-sponsors.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fdupes/+bug/460729
The original patch has been accepted upstream - however they have
not yet released 1.60; thanked the contributor for his revised patch
for precise but recommended that we wait for the upstream release as
this is only a minor typo in the manpage. Unsubscribed ubuntu-sponsors.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/autofs5/+bug/578536
Required updates have been made to the debdiff for natty and SRU
details appeared to be in order - tweaked changelog to have a bit more
detail and uploaded to natty-proposed. Unsubscribed ubuntu-sponsors.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnomeradio/+bug/954993
Covered by Merge Proposal also in the queue - Unsubscribed
ubuntu-sponsors.
https://code.launchpad.net/~geoubuntu/ubuntu/precise/gnomeradio/gnomeradio.fix-954993+955462+more/+merge/97770
MP for above. Changelog needed work and patches had limited
tagging. Provided feedback. This is a large set of patches outside
my specific area of expertise so review from a dev who has more
knowledge appreciated - I did check that it built!

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/athena-jot/+bug/804355
Changelog needed quite a bit of work and package has not been
updated for a long time - provided feedback to reporter/contributor on
what needs to be fixed. Turns out jot is not that random in some use
cases.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glance/+bug/925609
Work already completed upstream by Chuck; thanked contributor for
his work and explained that it would land in precise in the next few
days when we do the next weekly release. Unsubscribed ubuntu-sponsors.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zanshin/+bug/956821
  dholbach beat me to it

https://code.launchpad.net/~talex5/ubuntu/precise/zeroinstall-injector/fix-for-953756/+merge/97807
Changelog and patch required some further work - queried whether it
might be better to re-sync from Debian which now has version 1.6.

That's me done for today (aside from landing the zentyal packages...)

Cheers

James

Patch Pilot Report 02/12/2011

2011-12-02 Thread James Page

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Only managed to touch four things today:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rsyslog/+bug/659439
- Tidied up release nominations; as this bug has a simple workaround
and could cause confusion/problems for some users marked as 'Won't fix'
and un-subscribed ubuntu-sponsors.

https://code.launchpad.net/~gandelman-a/ubuntu/lucid/cluster-agents/lp893352/+merge/83073
- Proposed merge looks good, associated bug has appropriate SRU
information - uploaded to lucid-proposed.

https://code.launchpad.net/~gandelman-a/ubuntu/precise/squid3/lp891445/+merge/82485
- Already uploaded - Marked 'Merged'

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/freeimage/+bug/898845
- Issues applying provided debdiff as new upstream tarball had
Windows formatted files; asked bug/patch reporter to look into this.
Also queried what the current state of this package was in Debian (bug
reporter appears to have stepped forward as maintainer) as pushing a new
upstream release through that route would be preferable. Marking
in-complete and un-subscribed ubuntu-sponsors until queries/issues with
patch/encoding resolved.

Cheers

Pilot report from today.

https://code.launchpad.net/~utlemming/ubuntu/oneiric/dovecot/oneiric/+merge/76101

https://code.launchpad.net/~utlemming/ubuntu/oneiric/autofs5/oneiric/+merge/76120
Commented with recommendation that these should be delayed until P
development - potential for high impact with these changes late in
cycle as core services.

https://code.launchpad.net/~utlemming/ubuntu/oneiric/munin/oneiric/+merge/76103
https://code.launchpad.net/~utlemming/ubuntu/oneiric/cobbler/oneiric/+merge/76106
Needs Fixing - requested that changelog entries be updated with
information as to what the fix resolves as well as the detail of the
change itself.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/munin/+bug/840386
Reviewed revised debdiff; Patches are all now well annotated (DEP-3)
and make sense to me; debian/changelog entry requires some work as is
a little confused and has missing merge aspect - comment added.

Patch Pilot Report 20110830

2011-09-02 Thread James Page
Notes from my first patch pilot slot on Tuesday this week.

lp:~lynxman/ubuntu/oneiric/apache2/fixeddefaultsite
Minor behavioural change to default apache2 virtualhost/site;
does not actually resolve the associated bug and not really
worth merging as increases the delta with Debian and changes
default behaviour. Requested that this be reported against
Apache2 in Debian, marked branch as disapproved and marked bug
report as 'Opinion' as default handling of mod_rewrite
configuration in VirtualHosts does merit more debate.

lp:~peter-petrakis/ubuntu/lucid/multipath-tools/lp-641151
lp:~peter-petrakis/ubuntu/maverick/multipath-tools/lp-641151
lp:~peter-petrakis/ubuntu/natty/multipath-tools/lp-641151
Blocked by SRU already in -proposed for this package, updated
bug report to document this and what will need to be done to the
proposed branches when SRU process complete - all three branches
marked as 'Needs Fixing' referring to linked bug.

I've just uploaded a new version of the etherpad package to this PPA; it
removes the majority of bundled Java dependencies (aside from a patched
version of yuicompressor; ran out of time to look at this last night)
and links to Java libraries in the main archive.

I'll take a look at the final bundled dependency over the next few days.

Hi Dustin

I started to take a look at the bundled Java dependencies last week; it
looked like all but 3 of them could be fulfilled through existing Java
libraries in the archive.

Happy to integrate this into the packaging - do you have a branch I can
work against?

I would be up for this; the upstream build process is completely
non-standard but we should be able to work it into something more
maintainable.

I think that pushing a JavaLibraryFreeze as close as possible to the
DebianImportFreeze makes alot of sense as it gives a clear period of
stability prior to FeatureFreeze to ensure that dependent stacks can
resolve any integration/library issues that new versions of Java
libraries may cause; as Dave points out late sync's from Debian in the
Maverick cycle caused a-lot of pain which could potentially have been
avoided by taking this approach.

We should then take a FFe style approach post JavaLibraryFreeze to
ensure that any bugs/syncs/merge activity do not have significant impact
on dependent stacks; here's a starter for ten on when to reject a Java
Library update post this freeze point:

1) major version upgrade e.g. version 1.0.18 -> 2.0.xx
Should give some stability (but not guaranteed) for API
compatibility.

2) introduction of new dependencies implying new features
Reduces the risk that a main Java library starts pulling in
universe dependencies which would required MIR's; we had
examples of this in Maverick (see [1]) which where patched out
due to potential impact and lack of time.

3) potential for impact on key stacks such as Eucalyptus/UEC
Dave's referenced bug [0] is a good example where this was
picked up pro-actively and blocked for Maverick.

Some of these issues should be resolvable by having a specific focus
prior to the DebianImportFreeze (and JavaLibraryFreeze) on ensuring that
the key Java dependencies for core stacks are in a good state in terms
of upgrades/MIR's which should reduce the potential for having to go
through a JavaLibraryFreeze exception.

As my specific focus in Ubuntu is on Java libraries and stacks I'm happy
to pick-up coordination of this pre-freeze activity and act as a point
of reference for any freeze exceptions in terms of impact assessment
etc.
