Re: Potential Server Seed impact for 14.04: removal of OpenJDK/Tomcat7 from Ubuntu main

2014-03-14 Thread denis sorn
I am sorry, I actually misunderstood the question. But even in Universe, we
would still have upstream developers, this is not that bad. I also never
rely on release packages, since these are mostly outdated. I just download
postgresql, compile it, and usually end up with a mixture of packages
maintained by distribution, or repository, and those I pick up directly
from upstream. This also has a benefit that this environment is distro
independet, and can be easy moved form Ubuntu to Gentoo, Slackware, or even
OpenBSD.

Re: Potential Server Seed impact for 14.04: removal of OpenJDK/Tomcat7 from Ubuntu main

2014-03-14 Thread denis sorn
I think that importance of putting the package on installation disk is
overrated. I am developing in java, although I am using Oracle Java, but
even if I would switch to OpenJDK, it would be perfectly fine for me to
type aptitude install openjdk-jdk or something. I actuall purge it : ).

That's just an installation disk, and I think no one, I mean really no one
judge a Linux distro, by the amount of packages that fit on a CD. Or even
by the most default packages, when alternatives, well maintained, are
available.

Regards

Denis

Re: [ubuntu-cloud] Potential Server Seed impact for 14.04: removal of OpenJDK/Tomcat7 from Ubuntu main

2014-02-28 Thread Daniel Thomas
Similarly Ubuntu with OpenJDK and Tomcat is something that we run on
quite a few servers and so we would value it being in main.

Additionally the impression I get from debian-java (perhaps wrongly, I
don't follow it that closely) is that since OpenJDK now exists as an
open source Java implementation efforts to make things work with gcj
have much reduced. OpenJDK is a pain because of all the security
vulnerabilities but it is a complete implementation which everything
works with, gcj is not (aiui). I don't think that relying on gcj is a
good move going forwards.

Re: Potential Server Seed impact for 14.04: removal of OpenJDK/Tomcat7 from Ubuntu main

2014-02-28 Thread sunnychan
I am not really an Ubuntu user but I want to contribute to this
conversation. The main source of recent security vulnerability is down to the
Java Plug-in and Webstart (so called "deployment" component) of the OpenJDK.
You need to bear in mind that most server process (e.g. Tomcat process) are
not run under the security manager and therefore no sandbox to escape. As a
result majority of the security doesn't applies if you disable Java Plug-in
and Webstart.I did a little analysis last year and look at a number of pass
security vulnerability whether something that would affect a server
processes, etc. This information is actually given in Oracle security
notification pages:
Java Patch Release Info URLTotal number of fixes Fixes that
affect Client
components Fixes that affect Client and Server components
January 2014

January patch 38 35 3
October 2013

October 2013 patch 51 40 11
June 2013

June 2013 patch 40 35 4
Feb 2013

Feb 2013 patch 50 43 5
October 2012

October 201230 26 3
June 2012

June 2012 14 9 4
Notice that in majority of the cases if no "client" components is being
used, the number of security vulnerability affecting Java is substantially
lower. This is why Oracle has now introduced a Server JRE

which removed Java Plug-in and Webstart components to reduce the security
risk.I would suggest for Ubuntu to re-organise the Java packages on the
server so that Java Plug-in and Webstart is being separated and only
distribute a "server JRE" type of packaging in Ubuntu server.Sunny

Thanks to everyone who responded to this post both on and off list; as
I expected, quite a few users depend on a well supported OpenJDK in
Ubuntu in preference to using binary downloads from Oracle.

Ubuntu 14.04 will ship with both OpenJDK 7 and Tomcat 7 in Ubuntu main.

Personally I don't see a reason to not demote OpenJDK if it costs so
much to maintain.

Installing should be quick, and i am sure someone out there will build
a PPA and maintain it. I myself use OracleJDK and pull it from a PPA
which is well maintained.

Kind regards

Re: Potential Server Seed impact for 14.04: removal of OpenJDK/Tomcat7 from Ubuntu main

2014-01-22 Thread Hirotaka Yamamoto
Hi,

We are happily using Ubuntu provided OpenJDK because OracleJDK had
some crash bugs.
Even that bugs might have been fixed, we appreciate if Ubuntu
continues to provide an
alternative, well-supported OpenJDK based JVM implementation.

As to Tomcat, having it in main is not important for us for several reasons:
1. Its easier to use official archive.
2. There are vital alternatives including Jetty.

2014-01-22 Thread Edward Holcroft
Not having a well-supported OpenJDK would be a disincentive for me. All my
12.04 Tomcat servers use OpenJDK. I was planning continue this arrangement
when we upgrade to 14.04.

I hope I'm not alone in saying it's most comforting to have a well
supported OpenJDK/Tomcat solution on Ubuntu. I would not want to resort to
using Oracle.

As much as I'd prefer not to run Java, we (my employer) have a
reasonable amount of it, some of which is user-facing and in Tomcat7.
We migrated from Oracle Java to OpenJDK to make our lives easier (APT
has its uses).

A less supported Java probably wouldn't affect us too much, unless there
were serious security issues that weren't dealt with. It likely wouldn't
cause us to stop using Ubuntu, or to run back to Oracle Java.

Java is a very popular language. And I would consider it surprising if it
wasn't supported in Ubuntu server. gcj isn't really an option for Java
webapps, it's too different to the traditional Java stack.

Potential Server Seed impact for 14.04: removal of OpenJDK/Tomcat7 from Ubuntu main

2014-01-21 Thread James Page
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi Folks

The first round of seed review changes have now been applied to the
server seeds; quite a few bits have dropped out of main and the size
of the server ISO has reduced!

Next - the foundations team have been reviewing whether we should
continue to provide OpenJDK as the default Java implementation in
Ubuntu; this package is quite a resource drain on both the foundations
and security teams from a SRU perspective so demotion of openjdk7 to
universe is being considered.

Most Java-ish things in main can be built using gcj; however Tomcat7
is not going to work with gcj so would end up being demoted as well.

What do people think to this plan? Are OpenJDK and Tomcat7 important
packages for Ubuntu users? Will not having a well supported OpenJDK
implementation in Ubuntu main discourage people from using Ubuntu to
host their Java based applications? Or do users still just use the
Oracle Java downloads instead and ignore what Ubuntu provides?

Let me know what you think...

Cheers

James
