But if users download WUBI, they have a chance to pick their favourite
Ubuntu distribution. They would not know what the others are since
there is no description regarding to others.

Yes, true, but more explanatory links and descriptions can be given.
Mine was just an example.

It is very far away for users that only look for download links except
for looking in Project/About Ubuntu/ Derivatives link.

Another suggestion is placing a text about the Derivatives page below
"Do you want to upgrade? Follow our simple guide" as this maybe also a
shortcut

I know all that, but AFAIK there is no one not an employee of Canonical that
is involved in decision making about ubuntu.com.

Fair enough... now it makes more sense! Also yeah I have that problem
sometimes too where I accidentally send from my GMail and Ubuntu is
like "nope, not today bud."

That was meant to be "*U* for Unity ;)", but the winky got lost when I
had to manually retrieve/resend the message. (Mailman isn't as smart as
Launchpad about figuring out messages sent from one of many different
aliases.)

The fact is, "Ubuntu" is the name of two distinct things: a project
encompassing many flavors, and one of those flavors. Recognizing which
one you're talking about at any given moment helps immensely.

By that flawed and short-sighted logic how do you explain Ubuntu with
a G for GNOME up until a couple of years ago?

Mark Shuttleworth hadn't figured out what direction he wanted to take
his megalomania in yet and was biding his time for something disruptive
to happen so he could try to usurp GNOME's position.

(Honestly, Unity gets criticized, laughed at, and used as a primary
example of how Ubuntu is nothing more than a new love child of Microsoft
Embrace-Extend-Extinguish and RedHat Not-Invented-Here mentalities. Do
you think it would have lasted more than a week if they had rolled that
out without major disruptive changes in GNOME a la Gnome-Shell? People
jumped ship as-is.)

Each flavor has a dedicated landing page: kubuntu.org, edubuntu.org,
xubuntu.org, ubuntustudio.org, mythbuntu.org, lubuntu.net. The one for
*U*buntu (with *U* for Unity is ubuntu.com.

The centralized page for the Ubuntu *Project* is wiki.ubuntu.com. This
seems right to me, as it's open for collaborative ownership by all
flavors, all members. It'd be quite appropriate to add a prominent link
from the main page of the wiki to:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DerivativeTeam/Derivatives

Ubuntu and derivatives (Re: Ubuntu.com Download Page)

2013-01-25 Thread Vesa Paatero

Hi,

Thanks for you message, Volkan. I also noticed at some point that the
Ubuntu website says surprisingly little about the variants, even the
officially supported variants. I have an Edubuntu installation since
2007 and I'd appreciate better information as a basis for
decision-making between Ubuntu and Edubuntu and other variants.

It seems that there is some information about the interrelationship of
variants (or derivatives) but it is not easy to find. Dmitrijs already
brought up the link
http://www.ubuntu.com/project/about-ubuntu/derivatives and I like how
the page

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DerivativeTeam/Derivatives

presents a classification for the variants: "Official editions",
"Recognized flavors", "Customizations"... with a few words about what
each class is about.

Whereas the owner(s) of Ubuntu are doing well in allowing the
derivatives/variants to coexist peacefully with Ubuntu, it seems that
they prefer to keep ubuntu.com the home page of exactly Ubuntu rather
than an umbrella for the whole family of derivatives.

In theory, someone could make e.g. a wiki-styled documentation site
about the essential differences between derivatives, such as what you
can and what you can't install in a given derivative compared to the
main line of development (Ubuntu), but the challenge comes from how
swiftly these things change from release to release. And I'd guess that
most applications can be installed to any derivative, the difference
between derivatives being more about what is installed by default.

libopenal-dev and libglu1-mesa-dev don't support multiarch

2013-01-25 Thread James Dolan
Pardon my ignorance, but is there a reason why a lot of these devel
packages don't have multiarch support? libopenal-dev for instance has no
data diffs between i386 and amd64 yet its missing the "Pre-Depends:
multiarch-support" line in the control file of the .deb. This makes cross
compiling really annoying when in theory it should "just work". libopenal1
is multi-arch, but of course its the -dev package that setups the symbolic
links needed to make things link. Posting to this list because its marked
as the "Maintainer" of those particular packages.

This would be IMHO to confusing.
Normal people don't know what a distribution is or what you mean with
'environments'.

This statement is an oxymoron. Ubuntu is officially supported by
Canonical. Kubuntu is officially supported by Blue Systems.
All of them share common hosting / development infrastructure
sponsored by Canonical.
