Re: Call for Testing: Nouveau
Hi, Please see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1428752 looks like VT switching does not work and also for a few other people as is apparent in the feedback wiki page. I'm trying to report this by running "ubuntu-bug linux" but at the end of uploading the report it aborts saying "Cannot connect to crash database, please check your Internet connection". Any chance this gets fixed before Beta 1 and/or is there an existing bug I can join/subscribe? Delta debs / zsync (etc) discussions gone quiet?
Hello, There was recently some mailing list activity about benchmarking tests for delta debs/zsync etc but things seem to have gone quiet recently. Is there a wiki/spec/blueprint or another mailing list where I can track progress? As an Ubuntu user from a place with slow and expensive broadband I'm keen to be able to play around (help test) anything that comes out, and I do hope there is something for the Karmic timeframe itself? Feature freeze being so close worries me a lot :-) - Vishal -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss
Re: Reporting usability problems: please be more tolerant when you triage bugs!
+1, me too, etc... See the comments in bug 294523 at https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/294523 A few users have tried to report/push/discuss for this for a few releases already but it seems the bug is low priority even though its a usability pain and that too right at the start of the ubuntu experience - installation... I'm sure even though only a few are reporting it there are many users who silently suffer because they are simply not aware of the fact they can go to launchpad and/or the forums and be heard. I wish this bug would gain higher priority - maybe for the DX team? Looking forward to a fast and painless out-of-box ubuntu installation experience... The old "installer getting stuck at 82%" issue :-)
Hello, I was wondering if bug/wishlist 294523 [1], about the installer (Ubuntu, Kubuntu possibly others) which "gets stuck at 82%" for long periods during installation thereby ruining the install experience, has been looked at by anyone for the Karmic release? I had tried to mark it as a papercut candidate but apparently it didnt make the cut (was that a pun?). This issue has been discussed on mailing lists and forums [2] for at least a few releases already. Could it not be such that the operations done at 82% be moved to post-install or at first login? In my case, it ruins what would be a pleasant 5 minute install experience into a dull/boring 20-30 minute wait and I don't think the proposed slideshow will help. As a workaround I usually unplug my network cable and it doesn't complain, just progressing apparently normally. If it works without a network cable (I think we can assume many users dont have Internet access) why not postpone those 82% steps to later? Low latency kernel in Karmic to help with PulseAudio?
Hello, Whilst participating in the Karmic forums, I remembered a discussion about some distros like Fedora running a low-latency kernel which helped with PulseAudio. Is there going to be discussion during UDS amongst yourselves (devs) about enabling low-latency for Karmic as well? See this mailing list post by Lennart of PulseAudio/Fedora fame: https://tango.0pointer.de/pipermail/pulseaudio-discuss/2009-February/003150.html And, I wonder if enabling low-latency mode also improves responsiveness of the user desktop... Write data files to CDRW: With default settings it waits at "searching for existing session". Chose "no multisession" then it appeared to complete writing but the disc shows up as blank. But this may be a general Jaunty issue on my machine and not a k3b problem specifically. 2. Write gparted ISO to CDRW: Burn worked with default settings and resulting disc booted fine on KVM/virt-manager. 3. Write data files to DVDRW: Erase again fails to work/detect that disc is not empty. After completing burning a few files, the disc shows empty in Jaunty and also in k3b! The label and files show fine when I insert into a machine running Windows 7 so it looks like a Jaunty issue again on my machine. 4. Write gparted ISO to DVDRW: gparted image writing completed but did not boot in KVM - read error 0x80. Re-wrote the image, this time the disc shows blank in Jaunty/k3b and Win7. Again re-wrote, this time able to manually mount the disc (automount did not happen) and it shows in Win7 machine, but boot in KVM is very slow and not normal - boots to grub minimal. Update: Looks like my drive is failing, it is able to read CD/CDRWs and DVDs but not DVDRWs, even ones which I'd written earlier and were working before. The drive is about a year old with very little writing done on it, so I hope it isn't caused by testing k3b! :-) -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss

Sat Mar 21: Some testing notes: My drive is TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S203D SB00 (Samsung DVD DL writer) using k3b 1.60.0 from Tonio's PPA on Jaunty AMD64 current pre-beta. 1. On startup, k3b warns no support to create audio CD from mp3 due to possible missing libmad, but I have libmad0 installed version 0.15.1b-4 but I dont see a mp3 plugin in k3b. 2. When erasing a CDRW no progress information is available and this fact is also displayed in the erase dialog - erase worked. 3. CD (CDRW) data project (files) burn seems to hang at 0%, even the buffer shows empty, what logs/info can I provide here? 4. CDRW burn image (46 mb gparted iso) seemed to work, CPU usage was showing 25% on my quad core meaning was it consuming full CPU core? Or just the single thread working normally? Resulting CD booted fine in KVM (virt-manager). 5. DVDRW (single layer) erase shows progress bar fine. 6. DVDRW burn data files - default settings - disc shows empty after burn apparently succeeds - filesystem chosen is linux+windows and multisession setting is auto. Disc shows empty in Dolphin and k3b too. 7. After step 6, did a quick format, now instead of showing blank disc both dolphin and k3b show the volume label I provided but no files in the disc. (attaching debug output from burn dialog as k3b-dvdrw-burn-files.log) 8. DVDRW burn image (gparted iso) - selecting image shows md5 calculation failed in the dialog. Burn hangs at 100% - killed k3b. disc shows label only but is empty. 9. Now default quick format doesnt work - says disc is not empty, need to select force format. 10. DVDRW burn image (Win7beta DVD ISO) - software buffer is 100% but device buffer is between 5% and 35% - progress bars seem to be updated every 3 seconds. this time system monitor shows k3b as zombie. Hello, I'd filed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/312098 a while back about this build failure. So far there's just an automated comment to post output of lspci and Xorg.0.log etc but I'm not sure it's relevant and if a developer/packager might take a look at this. This is touchscreen support for (at least) my HP tx1302au tablet PC and includes a calibration tool in System->Preferences which works very well in Intrepid. Re: You lost a new Ubuntu user
There is a related (the 82% thing) thread on the forums at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=580129 . This is being stuck at 82% because the mirrors are slow probably due to high traffic... I agree that the desktop ISO installer should not attempt to automatically connect and download updates without asking and prompting with a warning that these are for security updates. I have a slow Internet connection and usually disconnect the LAN cable so that the installer just moves on... But I would like to point out to Peter the "community" that is Ubuntu. You should participate by filing bugs/wishlists and discussing on mailing lists and forums so that the distribution can be improved. Come to think of it, if there isnt a bug/wishlist already filed to have the installer ask/prompt before going online, then I should file one myself :-) -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss

OpenOffice 3 and Firefox 3.1 in Intrepid?
What is the latest status of the possibility of including OOo 3 and FF 3.1 by default in Intrepid? Without these 2 Intrepid will be a "boring" release IMO and no incentive for me to switch from Hardy. The devs took an "intrepid" decision to move to kernel .27 which I was hoping for, for smoother wireless on my HP tablet with Broadcom chipset and it is working well for me. But there is this new wl restricted driver in Hardy proposed which is also working well for me, so Intrepid really doesn't seem to offer a compelling reason to update... If anyone cares or is counting votes, +1 from me for inclusion of OOo 3 and FF 3.1 in Intrepid. Here's hoping this is really an "intrepid" release (like Gutsy was with compiz) to move things forward quicker :-) PS: I was running Hardy amd64 on my tablet, now Intrepid amd64 Alpha 4 with latest updates, mainly to test wireless. -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss
