The install process does check for updates (if an Internet connection is
available), however they are not installed until the user requests it. This
is done in order to speed the installation process, as downloading updates
would otherwise be longer than the rest of the installation process
combined.

The user is notified of the availability of updates upon their first login,
and can download and install them while exploring or customizing the system.

True, but it's often the only way to get some extremely common wireless
cards to work.

True, but that's no excuse for not helping users with a moderate degree
of technical literacy (surely one of Ubuntu's core constituencies)
configure an essential piece of hardware.

Well it's not all that supportable (you are at the mercy of whoever
wrote the Windows driver) and doesn't it need the user the extract the
Windows driver before it can be used?

It wouldn't be much use to the newbie in question, as he would have to
install his wireless card via ndiswrapper first.

Which prompts the question: why isn't ndiswrapper included in the Feisty CD?

I was just playing with some other OSes.

Debian checks for package updates as part of the default install
process. Heck, the Fluxbuntu alpha images check for package updates
during installation.

Is there any reason that the standard Ubuntu images don't?

He downloaded the LiveCD iso yesterday morning from
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download,and
experienced the same error message as the one
documented here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/96084/comments/59

*If* there's been an actual bugfix to the final
release LiveCD in the meantime, where would he
download the delta file from?

if the bug is already fixed on repositories, he could just do an
update on the LiveCD before installing.
