Correct. What should happen after selecting either restart or shutdown
is the screen should display a message saying something like, "Please
remove installation media, close tray if any, and press Enter". But the
screen is often just blank.

I find that this buggy behavior is more reliably reproduced if choosing
"install" from the main menu rather than booting to the live DE first.
Regardless all of the later bugs keep getting marked as a duplicate of:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/casper/+bug/966480

It does effect Ubuntu and Lubuntu images as well as Ubuntu GNOME images.
That bug needs to be edited to reflect that it effects Saucy but I can't
figure out how to do that.

I get a prompt to reboot the machine but then the screen goes black, the
CD ejects but that is it the computer does not reboot. I tried a fresh
install with the September 28 daily build and got the same result. This
time I had to power off the machine since control-alt-delete would not
work. However, I have been running that build for a couple of days and I
have not encountered any serious issues just some minor bugs.

I would like to continue testing but it will be difficult for me to do
this on bare metal unless I can find another machine otherwise I would
have to do it inside a virtualbox. Any suggestions.

[Announcement] Ubuntu GNOME QA Team

2013-09-30 Thread Ali Linx (amjjawad)
Hello Ubuntu GNOME Team,

As per our monthly meeting [1], I have proposed many ideas and kind of
roadmap for the near future of Ubuntu GNOME. The ideas/suggestions which
apply to the topic of this email were:

   - Recruit more members and mostly testers [2]
   - Once we have enough number to form a sub-team or group, we start to
   create one for each area.

I was trying to keep this until we release 13.10 but with unexpected amount
of MANY NEW Members Joining Us and Offering their full help and support as
an answer to the call of help [3][4], I find it difficult to wait :)

Today, I'd like to announce that Ubuntu GNOME has a Sub-Team for Testing
(QA/Quality) with initial of less than 10 members but I am sure we will
reach around 15-20 even before releasing 13.10 (hopefully).

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntugnome-qa

The Sub-Teams Experience of Lubuntu [5] was and still successful and this
experience inspired me and I do hope this will be so helpful for Ubuntu
GNOME and Ubuntu Quality in general.

*Dear members of Ubuntu GNOME Team* who are interested about the Testing
Area [6] and those who have showed a great passion and helped a lot to
report bugs, send feedback and shared their findings, etc and helped to
have a real stable release even though we didn't yet release the final
version but Ubuntu GNOME Saucy is doing so great. Please, send a request to
join:

@Ubuntu Quality Members
If you are willing to help us and support us, please join Ubuntu GNOME QA
Team and we will be very glad to get extra hands :)

Thank you everyone!

Time to have fun :)

P.S.
The restart after completion is a well-known issue, I mean the black screen

Startup disk creator still very buggy

2013-09-30 Thread Romuald TISSERAND
Hi,
While trying to burn a USB key with a dailu UG image, I just can say the
Startup disk creator is almost as buggy as it already was in 13.04.

It's very very difficult to burn a USB key with this tool. I always get
"Disk creation failed". Noway to get more, even by lauching the tool from a
terminal.

Any way to diagnose?

Okay, can you please try with the latest daily build and report back? can
you try that on Real Hardware?
I don't use Testdrive to test but if there is an option to enable the PAE
flag inside that virtual machine, try to enable it. I sometimes use Oracle
VirtualBox but as always, I do prefer and like Real Hardware.

Subject: Saucy 13.10 Beta2 Testing Report
To: ubuntu-rele...@lists.ubuntu.com, ubuntu-qual...@lists.ubuntu.com

The testing report for Saucy 13.10 Beta2 has been published to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/ReleaseReports/SaucyBeta2TestingReport

Thanks a lot to all those who participated in testing this release. We have
only a couple of weeks before the RC milestone lands, then the final
testing shortly after. Watch for those milestones to start appearing on the
iso tracker [1], and please contribute to the testing of them if you have a
bit of spare time.

Thanks,

Ok I'll do with a live USB key.

I think this is probably the same kind of issue which has turned the power
switch undetected. I'll try asap and let you know.

I think you are talking about an installed system while as part of our
testing and to go the extra miles, I'd appreciate if you could try
that wit the latest daily build with fresh new install.

The most important part of testing is to test the installation and
then check the system after being installed. While your issue is more
about the system after installing it, which I understand but for the
sake of helping, I am asking to try to install again using the daily
build.
In fact, you can go for: Try Ubuntu GNOME without installation and
check whether this issue is happening or not.

If this is too much to ask at the moment, and since you updated the
system and the problem is still there, I guess we can report a bug BUT
to be in the safe side and double check before filing a bug, Try
Ubuntu GNOME without installation will do the trick.

By the way, I am not affected with this. I am testing Ubuntu GNOME
Saucy on my main machine (which is not for testing - sigh) : Lenovo
G570 Core i5 2nd generation and 4GB RAM. Tested Beta 2 amd64 and will
also try the latest daily soon :)

Thanks a lot.

Here my multimedia keys are working without problem (Macbook Pro 8,2).
This is not the case with the brightness keyboard keys as I've already

I think that the background issue doesn't have relation with the
graphic card driver as I'm experiencing it as well, and I'm using the
open source driver.

Confirming with the OS driver.
And this workaround works for me:
Type Alt+F2 and run "r". This reloads gnome-shell and the desktop
background is shown as expected.

In my machine the desktop background is shown without problem. But,
sometimes while using Chrome the tab titles are not shown.

I've tested with fglrx beta2 but it doesn't boot. Hope AMD to release a
new driver version that solves all this bugs.

This happens on Stock Beta 2 13.10, and also updating with the PPA's

But it is fixed in gnome3-staging it's not passed to the gnome-next

I've actually added the gnome3-next and gnome3-staging PPA and it
fixed it, but other things get broken, so it's going to get fixed in
the next gnome3-next update, so it's not your fault, you have to be
patient for the update.

What ISO are you testing? Beta 2? Daily?

What version? i386? amd64?

I think you mean DVD because the ISO is larger than 700MB.

Have you checked MD5SUM?

Are you sure your CD/DVD Drive works fine?

How did you create that LiveDVD?

Have you checked with LiveUSB?

You see, we need to know the answers of all the above Qs so that we can
help and find out what is going on :)
So please, whenever you send a testing email (result or ask for help) is to
cover all the above initial questions :D

>
> 2. Running CD integrity check never completes (>1 hour)

Which tells either it is bad ISO (MD5SUM need to be checked) OR bad burn
(make sure to burn at a low speed (8x for example) OR your CD/DVD Drive has
some issues. Best approach here to check MD5SUM and Burn at Low Speed and
even better is to use LiveUSB. LiveUSB much faster and more responsive.

Confirming with the OS driver.
And this workaround works for me:
Type Alt+F2 and run "r". This reloads gnome-shell and the desktop
background is shown as expected.

Are you using the gnome3-testing PPA and do you see your desktop
background?

Hmm I wonder what the difference between fglrx and fglrx-updates
packages is. Driver version and changelogs seem to match.
By the way this looks like AMD's 13.6beta driver to me, with
patches to support Linux kernel 3.11

Re: [Testing] Nautilus Bugs

2013-09-30 Thread Hashem Nasarat
The upstream (official) nautilus bug tracker is
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/buglist.cgi?product=nautilus&bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED

The "file new bug" link is on the bottom of the page.

[Testing] Nautilus Bugs

2013-09-30 Thread Manuel Cuadra
Hi, I've been testing all versions of Gnome3, that is 3.8 - 3.10
Staging and in all of them when I do a connection via SSH I get the
following Bugs:

- Nautilus doesn't remember the Username and Pass for a server even
when I press the "Remember Credential" check box

- When I'm connected to the server I can browse without trouble, but
if I press a letter to search it freezes without comeback, I have to
force close and restart.

Because neither of them generate a ubuntu-bug report, my question is,
how should I report this?

Best regards,

Manuel

Hi there,

I finally managed to install the fglrx driver and now it's working
perfectly.

One less problem with this version...

Regards.

My fault was trying to install the fglrx-updates package, according to
some forums this could not work for all.

sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx-updates fglrx-amdcccle-updates
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic fglrx fglrx-amdcccle
sudo aticonfig --initial

after installation and reboot, you can check if it is working with:

fglrxinfo
