Irrespective of eog and nautilus, gnome-control-center should not crash when
setting the background. I will push an updated 3.8.5 package and if it still
happens after that
please do file a crash report with backtrace.

Re: Can not change background

2013-10-21 Thread Mark Blakeney
Thanks Tim. As I just added on the bug, I was proceeding to generate a
bug report but I discovered that the problem is likely to be related to
the standard gnome image viewer, eog. Eog displays most jpeg files
on my system in corrupted form, usually most of the image is black but
sometimes I see corrupted terminal windows (probably mine). All other
image viewers show the images fine (e.g. feh, chrome, firefox, gimp,
imagemagick, etc). I also find that gnome-control-center crashes trying
to add a background whether I have "File manager manages the desktop" or
not. I have changed by default viewer to feh so now all images look fine
when I click on them in Nautilus etc now, but the "change background"
function still crashes. I was able to actually change the background
image by right clicking in Nautilus and "set as background".

I had a look around launchpad for eog bug reports like above and found
quite a few describing the same symptoms, mostly from older versions of
Ubuntu though. Just seems like at 13.10 I have picked up one of those
random annoying Ubuntu ghost bugs that haunt around launchpad forever.

I have found a few other bugs in my fresh install of Ubuntu GNOME 13.10
and have added/annotated them on launchpad. The broken keyboard shortcuts
is the most serious imho.

Just file the bug as normal, using the apport crash popup or ubuntu-bug etc.

All bug reports against packages from the gnome3-team PPA's will get
automatically[1] directed to here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-gnome/

Tim

[1] This only applies to the gnome3-team PPA's as we have a special hook setup.
It won't work with any other PPA's, hence the confusion
sometimes from the Ubuntu guys.

Can not change background

2013-10-21 Thread Mark Blakeney
Gnome shell on Ubuntu GNOME 13.10 crashes nearly every time I change the
background as I commented on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/
gnome-control-center/+bug/1196196. The Ubuntu maintainer there stated
that bugs due to ppa's can not be reported on launchpad(?).

Most using Ubuntu GNOME would be using the gnome3 ppa at least, and
probably gnome3-next as well. Can we not report bugs on launchpad? Where
should we track them?

Your support in this Team has been essential and there´s no doubt that your
participation was a key factor to make this project walk i a straight line.
I you ask me which project is more interesting to be on, I would look at it
in the perspective of new features that are going to be changing Linux
world, and Gnome is walking on the line of the change, with wayland and
touch, so I guess it is a interesting project all around to participate on.

Whatever you choose, you´re a great person and wish you good luck!

Clearly it makes sense to focus your energies on a more limited scope. I
think you need to decide what projects interest you the most
intellectually. Personally, I haven't been around the Ubuntu GNOME
community for more than a few weeks, and while I do plan on getting
personally involved, I will be lurking awhile longer before I do. One
thing that I have noticed in my lurking is that you are a respected
member of this project whose talents have not gone ignored. Ubuntu GNOME
as a project and community is still very young and small, but it has all
the potential in the world for greatness. Losing key members at this
early stage can stunt growth. I can only hope that Ubuntu GNOME stays on
your short list of active projects, but good luck to you regardless.

I think that only you knows how much work involves to manage all those
communities. So far, you are doing a GREAT work in Ubuntu GNOME.
Obviously, if you ask us, we can only be selfish people and suggest you
to focus on UbuntuGNOME as our community is quite young and it needs
your work to improve and make it grow. But it is only you who can
evaluate all the pros and cons of each choice.

Regards.

P.S.: Pick Ubuntu GNOME ;)

Hi,

Thank you for your suggestion but I am afraid the idea is not good enough :)

Creating anything new for any Social Media Channel at the moment is a waste
of time, energy and will not bring the results we want.

Our Google+ Page is going a great job, I am glad that more than 100 new
users are subscribing to it daily. Our Facebook Page is over 2000 now (when
I joined in July, it had +1300) and the interaction between our side and
the users is really great :)

Do not worry about collecting the data, leave that to me as Social Media is
my game ;)

>From very long experience with Social Media and Communications, I can tell
with confidence that using the 'current' and 'available' resources at this
moment is very important. I personally do not want to waste one single
second for this cycle. Ubuntu GNOME will not be like Ubuntu GNOME the one
we know it, it is going to be much better, I promise you that :)

I will keep you all updated about this plan :)

Thanks!

P.S.
The communications report for Oct is going to be a huge hit ;)

I think the best would be making a Google Form; in this way we could manage
in a simple way feedback from any social media channel.

I think the idea is great :)
