Canonical are generally fairly lenient around community use of their
trademarks, GNOME on the other hand are far more strict. Both have
comprehensive trademark guidelines that say what you can and can't do. We had
to get approval from both for our logo.

I don't think using the logo in itself would be a problem, its more if the logo
is used in a way that makes an unofficial group, look like a
official entity that there would be issues.

Re: [Ubuntugnome-comms] Ubuntu GNOME Brasil - Facebook Group

2014-12-19 Thread Efstathios Iosifidis
Hello,

My only concern is the administration of the page. Right now there are
15 people. What will happen when they are 1015?
Don't you have local Ubuntu community? You can spam news about Ubuntu
GNOME and GNOME there. If there is a problem related to Ubuntu, there
will be more people to reply. If it's related to GNOME, you can take
action.
You can post there about your effort to translate Ubuntu GNOME wiki,
so even if people who doesn't use Ubuntu GNOME can help you.

Regarding the logos etc, although you're right about it, YOU ALL have
to reconsider everything.
When someone uses logos-names etc to promote and grow the community,
it's OK to use it. If he wants to earn money out of it, then it MUST
be reported and the right people will take care of it.

I'll add some case studies.

1. Someone wants to go to conference and present Ubuntu GNOME. First
of all, is it acceptable to use the logos at his presentation?
He also wants to print couple of brocheres about Ubuntu GNOME and how
to contribute. Is it possible to use logos there? Text only brochures
isn't that good.

Regariding other communities, this is totally acceptable, if you use
the exact logos and not custom ones.

2. Somone wants to go to conference as Ubuntu GNOME presence and he'll
be at Ubuntu booth. Let's say that Ubuntu local community made some
promo materials (not sure if it's happening in general) and they sell
them to cover expenses (such as promo materials creation, prints etc).
Is it acceptable to do use any Ubuntu GNOME artwork?

Visitors, linux users in general, like to buy promo materials in my
country. Unfortunately, FOSS communities (and supporting
companies-foundations) doesn't send promo materials.

Regarding GNOME, as far as I know, they let you print T-shirts and
sell them. You can cover the cost of printing and send the rest to
Foundation. It's harder (and more expensive) if you ask them to send
you T-shirts to sell them and send them the money.
What if someone sells T-Shirts without tell the Foundation? Well, the
visitors can report him to the board and he has to prove them that he
made a donation or send money to Foundation somehow. It's so simple.

Anyways, I better end it here.
Don't forget to have phun,
Stathis
