Partly agree, even though I have to say material design so far is
closest to that idea to date, looking at all other user interfaces I've
so far seen.

Talking about (Ubuntu) GNOME, however: I use that on my day-to-day work
laptop so I spend loads of time also during office hours in front of it
while at the same time I then and now have to do presentations or have
people sitting in front of my screen.

For those scenarios I am looking for a simple, straight, "elegant"
theme, flat controls, decent color scheme, not too many bright
elements. So far I use either Numix Frost or Arc-Dark which seem
closest to that. Default GNOME theme unfortunately is not a fun to use
because of the window title bar and the top level bar which both are
way too large for a small screen and, talking about the window title
bar, pretty ugly at least by my tastes which doesn't count much.

Would be nice, for these purposes, to have a theme such as Numix, Arc
or the Elementary-OS theme bundled with Ubuntu GNOME out of the box...

Cheers,
Kristian

Who "we"? I certainly don't love Material Design, and I'm waiting for it
to go out of fashion and hoping something less industrial (cold,
mechanical) looking takes it''s place.

It depends on the distro. Ubuntu has Ambiance/Radiance.

-Install Dash-to-dock Extension, and place the dock on the bottom
with the App Drawer at the beginning. Why? Because wide screens let
you place even more apps on the dock and even though Canonical
believes that the dock should remain on the left, It doesn't really
matter because the Intellihide feature gives you even more space when
you maximize an App.

User can install d-t-d using apt or from gnome-software. But you see
d-t-d tries to do exactly opposite what gnome-shell is designed to do.
So Gnome doesn't recommend distro to install it by default.

-Users also Install the Activities Configurator to add transparency
to the top panel and change the "Activities" button for an icon.

Transparency idea was rejected by Gnome as it is against their HIG.
User can install it if they want.

- And last but not least, most users install the Top Icons Plus
extension to get rid of the bottom tray and place the applets on the
top panel.

Top icons is based on legacy system-tray which Gnome removed
completely. So as of now Top icons doesn't work. But there is better
alternative: app-indicators. Ubuntu will use it and everybody else too.

When it comes to the default Apps, the most popular browser is Google
Chrome (Not Chromium). I'm aware it is not a Free App but maybe
Google can sign an agreement with a distro to make it default.

Normal users won't notice the difference between chrome & chromium. And
no, Debian can't include chrome.

The world has the best Linux OS for phones and tablets: Android and
the best Linux OS for Netbooks (ChromeOS) Why shouldn't we have the
best OS for Work Stations as well?

What "best" according to you may not be the best according to someone
else. You like shell, he likes Unity and she likes mate.

It would be nice to have an OS that provides a seamless Ecosystem
among your devices.

Yes it would be. But it requires universal-online-account-integration,
cloud-sync of data/settings ,an api to talk with the system etc.

But as of now, no such project exists neither in Gnome nor in KDE.
Unity8 tried to do that which was abandoned. You can try Yunit when it
become bit mature. Solus has similar plan too.

Thanks.

I was actually thinking the other day that maybe Ubuntu GNOME should
stick around in the exact same role that it is today. Artful will be
shipping a version of GNOME3 with a bunch of customisations to ease the
transition from Unity, and so there will still be a need for someone to
provide a stock GNOME3 experience on Ubuntu, which is precisely what
Ubuntu GNOME has been doing.

I'm not saying your suggestions don't have any merit, but I personally
would like to retain a stock GNOME3 environnent since it is both
visually appealing and the workflow works really well, for me, anyway.

Ubuntu Material Design

2017-08-28 Thread snydox

Good morning/afternoon ladies and gentlemen,

My name is Eric Nicholls and I'm nothing but a Linux Enthusiast that
wish to see Linux on the Desktop. I'm currently running Ubuntu Gnome
for the following reasons:

1) I come from Fedora and even though it is a nice OS, It lacks a lot
of software, repos and support.
2) I left Ubuntu originally because the so caledl Unity Desktop went
from an idea to a fantasy and meanwhile Gnome was becoming a robust DE.

So I decided to Install Ubuntu Gnome and get the best from both worlds.

Now that Canonical will make Gnome default, I was wondering about the
future of Ubuntu Gnome. I was thinking that maybe the project could
ship a better version of Ubuntu Gnome Instead. Canonical will ship
Gnome with only a few teaks and the truth is that Stock Gnome is not
that friendly to the eye or to most people's workflow.

I have made a lot of surveys on Google+ and the majority of the users
perform the following tweaks:

-Install Adapta GTK Theme along with Papirus Icon theme. Why? because
they look gorgeous and they push the Material Design Concept we love on
our Android phones.

-Install Dash-to-dock Extension, and place the dock on the bottom with
the App Drawer at the beginning. Why? Because wide screens let you
place even more apps on the dock and even though Canonical believes
that the dock should remain on the left, It doesn't really matter

I'm aware that System76 is doing something similar with POP_OS but they
are personalizing the Experience for their own devices only,

This is a Google+ post where I published my Desktop so you could have
an idea: https://plus.google.com/+ericnicholls-snydox/posts/TT6UtackRFE

What do you guys think?

Best Regards,

Eric Nicholls
