Hey all

I'm on 8.10, with the nVidia accelerated drivers installed for my
GeForce FX 5600 AGP 8x card, 256MB RAM. PC is an Athlon XP 2800+, 1G
RAM, 180GB disk. I have dual monitors, identical Taxan Ergovision
750s, both at 1152x864.

I've been running Ubuntu on this machine for years - 7.04, 7.10, 8.04
and now 8.10. Only now does Compiz seem stable enough to use, though.

However, I'm finding some niggles.

 - I had to use the nVidia-settings applet to set up the screens; the
Ubuntu displays control panel seems unaware I have 2 monitors.

 - I can't drag maximized windows from one screen to another. This
worked in 7.10 even in Compiz - the window frame deforms, then it
snaps loose and re-maximises on the other screen.

 - Window frames are subject to corruption. They fade out or switch to
the inactive-window colour randomly, making it impossible to tell
which window is active. Text  control widgets disappear. Translucency
is patchy. Sometimes the window frame partly disappear, replaced by
bits of the background wallpaper.

These aren't fatal problems, they're just awkward. Sometimes I have to
click on a window to activate it before typing, as I can't tell which
one is in front. Sometimes I can't move windows, as the frame's
gone. And to move a window from one screen to another, I must
de-maximise, drag, and re-maximise, like on Windows, which is a pain,
as it was much smoother on 7.10 (my previous long-term stable version,
which I used for a year plus.)

Anyone else experiencing anything like this?

Any suggestions?

I'll reply separately with the xorg.conf file.

I did encounter a problem that I couldn't save my settings from the
nvidia tool, but that's a fairly well-known issue - it affects Linux
Mint as well, for example - and I found an answer with Google. (Remove
the existing xorg.conf and the nvidia program writes a new one.)

I've noticed what might be a memory leak in Compiz on my Asus DV5000 
laptop, which has an Nvidia GeForce Go 6200/6400 in it, when I've been 
using it using the NX client for Linux. The memory usage seems to creep 
up slowly (over many hours) until it starts to swap. Quitting the NX 
client, and all other apps., does not fix the problem. I end up having 
to reboot. I've got my laptop video configured as two separate X11 
screens, but the same thing happens if I use twinview...

This is not a problem unless I use the NX client for long periods, or if 
I leave my laptop running with the screen locked when I go away for a 
week and forget that it's on. In fact, I put my laptop in my rucksack 
recently and I didn't realise it was still running - it got quite hot 
and the LCD screen was in a terrible state: Seems to have recovered!

I'd suggest your best bet to try to trace this would be to switch to
the open source nv driver for a while  see if the problem still
occurs. For 2D use, it's fine; it just lacks 3D and multihead support,
I believe.

Ouch. I have my machine set to sleep when the lid is closed, so this
doesn't happen. I don't like running laptops with the lid shut, even
when using an external screen - it often can cause overheating
problems, in my experience.

I've found that laptop screens have quite a short life, so I use my 
laptop with an external monitor and keyboard most of the time when I'm 
at work or at home. I do use the LCD display when I'm travelling, or if 
there is something interesting on TV ;-)

In fact, it's as much to save the keyboard as the LCD screen: I've 
already worn the 'A' key off my laptop keyboard. The Asus DV5000 is an 
'entertainment' PC, really, but it also performs quite well doing 
scientific work :-)

Hmm... along these lines - Anyone on the list using Ubuntu on a PS3?

What on earth do you do to them?

The screen of my heavily-used Thinkpad i1200 series from 2001 is still
100% despite a broken screen hinge. My once heavily-used Thinkpad 701C
from 1995 is also still absolutely fine.

I've seen many laptop screens die through being broken, mainly by
people closing them with things in them or dropping them, but I've
only ever seen *one* that's worn out due to screen burn in 20y in the
IT business. That, alas, was an eBay purchase for a friend of mine 
I've no idea what the former owner did to it, but he was a rather
dishonest seller - what was described as a Powerbook G4 in good nick
was absolutely knackered and clapped out.


 In fact, it's as much to save the keyboard as the LCD screen: I've

Worn keycaps, yes, I've seen that. I treat it as a security measure.
Only noobs need to look at the keyboard, :¬)

Not a chance. Too expensive and I'm not interested in HDTV or Bluray.
Nice toy but it does nothing I want. Instead I just bought a 2nd hand
PS2, cheaply, precisely *because* it Just Works and needs no
installation, setup, fiddling, drivers, configuration or anything
else.

I have a Wacom Tablet from 2004.  It works but I find I don't really use
it all that often.  I am not sure how well the newer devices are
supported.  Contrast this with my M-Audio Axiom, I use it almost daily
right now, so obviously I would recommend the keyboard over the tablet :)

Hi Tom,

i also have the fast track pro interface. It has been a while ago (ca. 1
year) when i tried to get it running with ardour etc. 
I was facing the same problems. It didn't work flawless. After Trial and
error i think one mode worked okay,  it was 48 kHz sampling rate, i
guess. I can't remember, if I managed both recording and playback at the
same time without drop-outs. But I know the result wasn't quite
satisfying.

I will definitely stay tuned to this issue and keep on trying as time
permits.

Please let me and other ubuntu-studio-users know, what you bring to
light.

Hi,

i'm under studio 8.04.1 64 bits.

I'm using wacom tablet since 2003, model CTF420, very close the bamboo 
model, it's plug and play in ubuntu since dapper.
I think it's better in ardour/cinelerra/kdenlive/ and all the 
video/audio editing software using a timeline than a mouse.

i'm using it for image editing under the gimp, inkscape, scribus and 
blender, it's a large pleasure.

That's a good choice.

I have M-audio Axiom 25 which I use as a portable 2 octave keyboard. It is very
good. The keys are much more plastic and lower quality on Oxygen8 than on Axiom,
I would like to recommend the Axiom models instead - the keys are
semi-weighted and
have a whole diffferent feel to them. To the date, the Axiom25 has the
best feel of any keyboard I have
owned to the date (I have Korg Wavestation, Roland D70 and one Yamaha
and have previously had D10, and compared to those,
the Axiom is better than any of those what is comes to feel). The
pitch wheel has quite good feel to it and
does pitch bends accurately. The mod wheel is also intuitive. And the
keyboard has also aftertouch I frequently use
when playing. I kind of expected lower quality from M-audio and I was
positively surprised when I unboxed the keyboard.

I have the sticky keys problem on the Wavestation. The Axiom feels
like it is not likely to develop such problems.
All keys function perfectly and I trust this keyboard now very much.
It also features knobs, pads some buttons
and a midi interface.

So summary: Axiom25 is a 2 octave keyboard like the Oxygen8, but a
higher quality version of the same concept.
I use it on the desktop behind the computer keyboard when I compose -
both fit nicely on the small space and I don't need
to turn around to start playing. This setup is very productive.

 que é fantástica, no ubuntu é só plugar e imprimir e se você quiser

Olá pessoal, sou novo aqui no ubuntu, e de quebra fui designado a montar um
servidor aqui na escola onde trabalho, é só para compartilhar uma pasta com
2 bancos de daos e controlar a net dos alunos.
Gostaria de ajuda, pesquisando sobre qual distro usar, me recomendaram o
Ubuntu por não se tratar de um servidor tão grande e complexo.
O problema é que disseram que seria facil configura-lo.Se tiverem um tuto ou
dicas para me ajudar, agradeço.

Olá!

Trabalho com suporte a diversas aplicações, e cada uma dando diversos paus
por dia.
Alguém conhece uma aplicação para armazenar uma base de conhecimento?

A principal funcionalidade que busco é um sistema de busca eficiente. Por
exemplo, quero filtrar por aplicação e por msg de erro ou sintomas. Permitir
adicionar máquinas, softwares (número de licenças, fabricante etc) tb é
desejável.

Não quero um sistema wiki (mediawiki, twiki etc).

O programa pode ser pago ou livre, rodar em desktop ou web...
Alguém conhece um?

Olá!

Para configurar o compartilhamento, digite, no terminal:

sudo apt-get install samba

isso irá instalar o samba, responsável por conectar o protocolo de rede
windows (SMB) com o linux. Você pode editar o arquivo /etc/samba/smb.conf
diretamente ou usar um assistente (Sistema / Adm / Pastas Compartilhadas,
algo assim) para criar as pastas compartilhadas.

Para controlar a conexão com a internet, você deverá ter duas placas de
rede, em uma entra o cabo da internet, e em outra entra o cabo da rede
local.

digitando:
modprobe iptable_nat
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE
echo 1  /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

Você habilitará o compartilhamento da interface eth0

Você precisará instalar o squid (sudo apt-get install squid), que é um
servidor proxy com o intuito de controlar o que se usa.

Lógicamente você terá que configurar tudo pra funcionar do jeito que vc
quer.

Com o squid instalado, é hora de mexer nas configurações de roteamento de
ips, o famoso iptables.

Se a sua rede for muito grande, pode não ser interessante usar proxy
transparente, se for pequena rola.

Proxy transparente significa que vc mexe no próprio servidor para que as
estações passem por ele. Quando não é transparente, precisa configurar nas
estações para que se use o proxy (tipo, no firefox tem essa opção lá)

Bom dia! Seja bem vindo!

Também migrei para o Ubuntu há pouco mais de 6 meses. Antes usava o
Slackware. Meu notebook (com slackware) queimou e, quando ficou pronto
precisei reinstalar tudo rapidamente, pois o utilizo no trabalho. Como os
servidores da empresa já eram Ubuntu Server, e como os administrava com
bastante facilidade, instalei o Ubuntu no meu notebook. Foi tudo muito fácil
e rápido (para um bom conhecedor do linux, talvez), mas você não deve ter
maiores problemas. Não se desanime, pesquise no google, em listas do ubuntu
e, se ainda assim não achar a resposta, pergunte!

Sugiro alguns sites que podem lhe ajudar exatamente no que você quer:

1. Sugiro que você instale o Ubuntu Hardy (8.04). É a penúltima versão
lançada, mas a última ainda está muito recente e ainda pode apresentar
algumas dores de cabeça, pelo que tenho acompanhado. Isto tende a diminuir
com o tempo, mas por enquanto, eu ainda ficaria com o Hardy.

2. Neste caso, há uma boa documentação em
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Hardy. Se preferir em português, ou se
preferir outra versão, na home page deste site tem links para guias em
outras línguas e versões: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Main_Page

3. Tem também uma boa documentação na própria home page do ubuntu (
http://www.ubuntu.com). Esta documentação pode ser acessada pelo menu

bom dia

Estou tendo o seguuinte problema:

 Tenho, por expemplo uma pasta no servidor chamada comercial e nessa pasta
tenho um grupo chamado vendas. Os usuários acessam normal essa pasta, só
que existem arquivos, tipo doc. xls ods dentro destas pastas. Esses arquivos
eram bkps de outro servidor. Quando o usuário tenta acessar esses arquivos,
abre o broffice, so que como se fosse um documento novo e não abre aquele
respectivo documento. E quando o usuário tenta salvar dentro desta pasta diz
que não tem permissão. O engreçado que, quando vou na pasta, clico com o
botão direito, vou em novo e peço um documento txt, ou planilha, etc, ele
deixa criar.
Ja dei até chmod 777 na pasta, pq pensei que era ai o erro, mas não deu

Meu compartilhamento no samba está assim:

[Comercial]
comment = Comercial
path = /home/dados/comercial
writable = yes
valid users = @vendas
write list = @vendas

Ja até mudei para
 [Comercial]
comment = Comercial
path = /home/dados/comercial
writable = yes
valid users = @vendas

Bom vou tentar explicar melhor... a placa de video eh reconhecida...
consigo usar o xrandr... efeitos 3D... porem a resolucao da tela fica em
1280x800. Porem a resolucao nao esta otimizada pois no gnome sobe o
drivver vesa para o monitor.. queria configurar o xorg pra minha placa na
unha pq.. nem o aplicativo de resolucao do gnome funciona direito...o
problema eh q nao tenho experiencia suficiente para isso.. entre minha
tentativas frustadas de configurar o xorg.. ja travei o x varias vezes...

Não entendi isso. eu uso 1280x800, tenho um note com placa intel. É a
resolução correta pra ele. Pelo que você escreveu, estou entendendo que a
resolução muda depois do login, é isso mesmo?

Cara, esse negócio do xorg.conf é problemático. Esse arquivo vem vazio, a
configuração para mim é um mistério. Algumas coisas que podem te ajudar (ou
não):

1) usar o sudo displayconfig-dtk

2) também no modo texto (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop) executar o
dpkg-reconfigure --xserver-xorg, isso tenta configurar automaticamente o
X.

3) sair do gráfico e usar o X --configure, eu coloquei aqui na lista outro
dia o passo-a-passo disso. Esse comando gera um arquivo xorg.conf que deve
ser copiado para o diretório padrão

Tente uma coisa de cada vez, para ver qual vai dar certo.

[Ubuntu-BR] Falha em autenticação para rede wi -fi

Olá Pessoal,

Estou tentando configurar minha conexão wi-fi para acessar a rede da
faculdade, tem tudo certinho, mas não consigo selecionar o tipo de
criptografia necessário (TKPI), a princípio parece ser o que dá
problemas, pois dá falha no login (a senha não é verificada
corretamente, pois ao ser enviada encripitada não bate com o que tem
nos servidores). Vejam, chega a se comunicar, mas pelo fato de ter
falha na encripitação dá erro no login.

Já vasculhei para tentar selecionar essa forma de criptografia pelo
gerenciador de dispositivos de rede, mas não encontro lugar algum em
que possa habilitá-la.

Qualquer ajuda é bem vinda, já que sou um usuário comum do sistema!!!

Bem, eu uso um pouco o avidemux e o mencoder.

[Ubuntu-BR] Configurar Placa intel ubuntu 8.10 (Xisberto) (Yuri)

Oi Xisberto, bom primeiro obrigado pela ajuda.

O negocio da resolucao eh o seguinte, antes qnd tinha o hardy consiguia 
subir o grafico da intel, e a tela de opaca ficava translucida. Agora no 
interpide nao to conseguindo subir o driver.. ai a tela fica opaca e feia... pq 
usa o driver generico do vesa. e é exatamente isso.. muda depois do login...
...
Ja tentei o comando # displayconfig-dtk
e retorna isso
command not found
 preciso de algo q nao tenho aq??? 

ja fiz o o esquema de do dpkg-reconfigure --xserver-xorg porem tmb sem 
sucesso. 

bom vou tentar os dois outros metodos agora... 
qnt aquele q v passou um passo a passo.. vc nao tem como me passar o 
link, ou me mandar o email?? entrei pouco dias na lista...sem querer abusar 
ja abusando uso o 
valeu e muito obrigado de novo pela ajuda

Sempre tive casos de sucesso, seja configurando tudo na unha ou usando
software pra isso, oq acontece é que as vezes o usuario nao tem a permissão
necessaria ai nao consegue mesmo nao!!

Mas como dica eu te digo pra usar o Likewise

O Software está dividido em 2, o OPEN e o ENTERPRISE.

No Ubuntu 8.04, o pacote open se encontra nos repositorios, ja no novo 8.10
eu não sei dizer pois ainda nem parei pra testar isso. E serve para voce
inserir um cliente linux no AD.
O pacote enterprise é pago, porém com varias funcionalidades como o proprio
site diz: *Likewise Enterprise allows you to extend Active Directory group
policies and security settings to non-Windows systems including - Linux,
UNIX, and Mac.*

Instalando:

*$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install likewise-open*

Responde algumas perguntar sobre o seu host onde se encontra o kerberos

*$ sudo domainjoin-cli join dominio.com.br Administrador* (Onde
administrador é um usuario com poder de ingresar maquinas no dominio)

E pronto! pode restartar o X (não precisa reiniciar a maquina, isso é linux!
:) )

Entre com o login no padrão DOMINIO\usuario
Entre com a senha, e seja feliz! :)

Se quiser, ou precisar, colocar no cron do linux para de 5 em 5 min ele
consultar o servidor NTP da rede, pois o kerberos é bastante sensivel, mas
aqui, nem precisou! hehehe

Funcionou de primeira, botei minha estação de trabalho na rede, e mais 2
debians. Hehehe...

É companheiros, realmente as coisas mudam! ;)

 Boa tarde, sou iniciante no linux e recentemente um amigo instalou o 
ubuntu 8.04 em meu micro.
Ele configurou tudo pra mim, só que eu não consigo reproduzir áudio e vídeo. 
Sempre pede para instalar codecs quando tento executar um arquivo desse gênero.
 Quem souber como resolver isso, me dê algumas dicas.

Conecte na internet e clique em instalar codecs. Acho que não tem segredo.

Paulo,

Eu uso o SoudConverter com o plugin mp3 instalados (ele próprio
encaminha a instalação quando você clica em propriedades).
Codecs eu uso o GStreamer como padrão, sem problemas.
As conversões que fiz foi de ogg para mp3 e não notei nenhuma perda na
qualidade.

Marcos, se estás abrindo os vídeos pelo Firefox, deixe que ele proceda a
instalação dos plugins, eles serão necessários. 
Em vias de regra, o plugin flash da Adobe resolve essa questão dos
vídeos.
Para áudio o GStreamer (em adicionar/remover) resolve os mp3 e outros.

Sim, Marcos, tem. Eu já mostrei várias vezes aqui, mas é melhor escrever
novamente. Vá em http://packages.ubuntu.com/ e procure por
gstreamer0.10-plugins e baixe todos. São arquivos com extensão deb. Não
precisa baixar os que terminam com -doc.

Salve todos numa única pasta no seu pendrive. Quando chegar em casa, você
tem duas opções:

Abra o pendrive e dê um clique-duplo em cada arquivo. Na janela que abre,
clique em instalar. Digite sua senha. Você vai precisar digitar a sua senha
para cada arquivo e alguns deles só poderão ser instalados depois que outros
tiverem sido instalados.

O outro método é usar o terminal. Abra o terminal e vá para o diretório do
pendrive. Não sabe qual é? É algum dentro de /media que não seja floppy ou
cdrom :) Siga os comandos abaixo (o $ aparece escrito, vc dá o comando que
vem depois disso)

$ cd /media
$ ls
cdrom  cdrom0  floppy  XISBERTO
$ cd XISBERTO
$ cd codecs
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Explicando cada comando:
cd é change dir, mudar o diretório.
ls é list, ele mostra os arquivos e diretórios dentro do diretório atual.
XISBERTO é o nome do meu pendrive.
Quando você precisa digitar o nome de um arquivo ou diretório, você pode
digitar o começo do nome e apertar a tecla TAB para auto completar o nome
dele.
dpkg é o comando que instala e remove os programas. Aquela janela gráfica
da primeira opção chama esse comando. -i é a opção de instalar.
sudo é o comando que deixa você executar ações de administrador. No linux,
apenas o administrador pode instalar ou remover programas, entre outras
tarefas. Ele vai pedir a sua senha.

Qual a diferença entre as duas maneiras? Na segunda, você vai digitar a
senha apenas uma vez, vai ter menos trabalho.

 1. Sugiro que você instale o Ubuntu Hardy (8.04). É a penúltima versão
 lançada, mas a última ainda está muito recente e ainda pode apresentar
 algumas dores de cabeça, pelo que tenho acompanhado. Isto tende a diminuir
 com o tempo, mas por enquanto, eu ainda ficaria com o Hardy.

 2. Neste caso, há uma boa documentação em

I tried that before and it doesn't works. It look likes it is installed,
but it won't start the Ebox deamons. It keeps on saying there is
something wrong with orbit I can't reproduce it, because I installed
ebox by adding the deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ebox/ubuntu intrepid
main to my sources.list. This isn't the best solution although, because
it isn't stable in my opinion.

My whole impression of ubuntu 8.10 isn't very good. It is buggy, not
finished, not complete. I think I will go back to hardy...

Intrepid SRU Report

Bug impact: Tomcat doesn't fully autodeploy applications dropped into
/var/lib/tomcat6/webapps: it fails to autodeploy the context file into
/etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost. This results in half-deployed
applications and a difficult problem to troubleshoot.

Versions affected: Intrepid (tomcat6 didn't exist before)
Fix in development branch: Was fixed in 6.0.18-0ubuntu4 (see comment 5)

Minimal patch: see comment 6 just above. This will be released as a
combined SRU with bug 283852.

TEST CASE:
Download the attached test-deploy.war, then:
$ sudo apt-get install tomcat6
$ sudo cp test-deploy.war /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/
After a few seconds, you should be able to access 
http://localhost:8080/test-deploy/
Without the fix, the displayed context parameter value is null. 
/etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost doesn't exist.
With the fix, the displayed context parameter value is My Company, 
Incorporated. An /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost/test-deploy.xml file was 
automatically created.

Regression potential:
The patch basically creates the Catalina/localhost directories in tomcat6 
(rather than waiting for a webapp package to create them) and changes the 
permissions from root:root 755 to 775 root:tomcat6. This is a targeted and 
permissive change, so the regression potential is very low.

I'm using samba to share files between my home computer (dual boot
Windows/Ubuntu 8.10) and my laptop (Ubuntu 8.10). Most of the time,
Windows is running at the home computer. Sharing goes fine with the
following fstab entry:

//172.19.3.4/Media  /home/user/media  cifs
noauto,users,exec,uid=1000,gid=1000,password=,iocharset=utf80
0

With this command line, a user can mount it (if Windows shares the
directory!).

Yesterday I booted again to Ubuntu on my home computer and there were a
lot of updates, I also think Samba got updated. I noticed that all my
shares were unshared, so I had to share my folders again. I did so,
using the 'Share' tab of the folder and I gave access to guests.

Now, on my laptop I can only mount the share as super user (sudo mount
~/media). If I mount the share as normal user, I get the following
message:

mount error 13 = Permission denied
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)

This used to work, but now it doesn't. So, I think this justifies a bug report. 
Hopefully, this makes Ubuntu better :-).
(Again: If I share a map on Windows (Desktop) and access this map with Ubuntu 
(Laptop), a user can mount it. If I share a map on Ubuntu (Desktop) and access 
this map with Ubuntu (Laptop), a user cannot mount the share.)

Both computers are running the following version of Samba:

sudo smbmount 192.168.1.102\\video video

it seem to work, but not in my case.

mount error: can not change directory into mount target donwload

Any help please? I have all my information in the NAS disc so I'm
completely lost here. Even FTP protocol doesn't work fine with folders
that have special characters (ñ, á,...)

Similarities include: 1) ssh uses the wrong -i id_rsa-... key, 2) noticed 
shortly after upgrade.

I'm using id_rsa, instead of id_dsa. Unlike this bug, the workaround
(removing the default key) does not work.

1st. Could you publish a mini (really mini) HowTo? Any to uninstall first???
2nd. Could you please what could kind side-effects are expected to appear, and 
how to reverse samba situation to actual as is. I guess that reinstalling 
smbclient and smbfs will be enough.

[Bug 303458] Re: segfault in pam_smbpass.so

So, I have back in rescue mode and do all possible updates.

After that, I did an ls /var/lib/samba and saw many files.
So did the apt-get remove --purge libpam-sbmpass and then, execute again an ls 
/var/lib/samba.
Files still there !

So, I did a rm -rf /var/lib/samba, and then apt-get install libpam-
sbmpass.

Next step, I continue boot process and try, in a terminal to do sudo
apt-get update and again segmentation fault !


Tail told me, during the sudo apt-get update :
Dec  5 17:07:09 zUbuntu kernel: [  370.131994] sudo[11276]: segfault at 0 ip 
7fd92f278dbc sp 7fff391b2e30 error 4 in

First I used network-manager but when the bug appeared I downloaded
network-manager-openvpn and the bug remained  unchanged. Here is my
configuration file openvpn.conf (NAME stands for my user id, IP-number
for the remote IP)

Nagios 3 is only available from 8.10, there is no package available for 8.04.
Installing random .deb files made for another release won't work.

For hardy, you should install nagios2 (sudo aptitude install nagios2).
