[ubuntu-art] [Breathe] Notifications Icons

2009-03-07 Thread Manuel Mas
Hey:

Right now I have stopped using Breathe since it doesn't show any of the new
Jaunty notifications at all, not even a black empty box. So, any plans to
work on that or are you waiting for Ubuntu to fix that to work with other
icons outside of Human? Also, how often is the PPA updated?

Keep up the good work.

Correct. Ubuntu needs to fix things on their end.

Also, how often is the PPA updated?

Whenever I feel like it. I /hope/ to do something monthly or as major
changes are made.

Maybe I shoulda thrown in a :). Wasn't meant like that at all. No need
for an apology.

So nice and official, (minus any negative feelings :P) there is *NO*
schedule to the PPA releases. It will pretty much happen when hittin'
milestones. Like Sebastien finishing the majority of the Categories.
Even then it's not set in stone.

Anyone not wanting to wait can build it themselves from either branch.

 Subject: [ubuntu-in] error while booting
 Hi

Just a while back i got an error while booting up.

I tried to note down the entire error message was but have missed parts
of it - what i have is here

There was a message gdm failed to load because of some ???

Its related to my /dev/sda7 partition which happens to be my root section

Further it seems that my /tmp had become write only and logs could not
 be written to this section.

so i ran fsck from the root terminal that popped up after all the error
 messages
Anyway some of the error message that i wrote down were

Unexpected inconsistency , run fsck without -a -p, manually
after which i got a whole lots of questions

 entry linc-6d75-0-12bf 7c 998e14a in /tmp/orbit-ram (73388) has deleted
  unused inode 74681 fix (y)

Block bitmap difference (216067 - 216073) etc etc Fix (Y)

free block count wrong from group 6# (4519 counted = 4528) fix (Y)
above message came for blocks 9 and 10

similar messages about Directories Count etc all fixed

at the end it said in caps FILE SYSTEM MODIFIED

then on trying to reboot it got stuck with messages in red
Failed to load authorization key /root/.plse-cookie read only file system

 /tmp read only file system

It then came back to a blue screen with a long message again saying GDM
failed to start x server -

so panicking i tried to switch to a different terminal and reboot

which i did with sudo shutdown -r now

 and it rebooted back normally.

 ***
 So what could have happened

There is possibility that your hard disk has some bad sectors(physical)..
or if you have some windows partitions on you hard disk, it might not been
properly shut down. I mean there might be some power failure when you are
using windows next u booted in ubuntu directly..
If this is true then you need to restart in windows run scandisk reboot
in ubuntu.. your problem will be solved..

If you dont have windows, try booting from ubuntu live cd run fsck from
the cd, this will confirm whether you have bad sectors(physical) on hard
disk or not..

and where can i find the error logs / startup logs if any
 what diagnostics can i fun

 ***
I let Ubuntu run its automatic fsck every once in a way which it does
Recently installed kde but have not changed my desktop manager from gdm
 to kdm (as yet)

 ***
 would be grateful for advice

 thanks

What is the filesystem?? If it is NTFS then you would need 'ntfs-3g' installed

Hi

Just an additional solution for folks who want to count both numbers and
text in a series in open office calc

=COUNT(C1:C9) + COUNTIF(C1:C9,*) seems to do the trick.

the first counts only number and the second counts only text entries and
both then get added up to give one figure
hope some one else finds this useful

another row with another set like LL1 to LL60 and then NIC1 NIC2 etc

so each row has multiple text entries (not same)

i need to do one thing basically - from a series find how many of the
cells has any entry in them (text or numbers)

to find how many have a particular text seems easy i use the funtion
=COUNTIF(C19:C26,FOO) and this seems to count the number of entries
 with foo

but i want to know how to count for any random text
have tried *.* , simply . etc no operator seems to work

 any ideas tips.

First unmount all the drives from the computer.
second launch the command line. then type sudo -i

then you will be enter in the root access.

 then type mount -rw /dev/sda5

 there you go

Now you will have the write access for that drive.

 Thanks for the support :)

I prefer you check your */etc/fstab* file. For each mount rule, check
whether there is anything such as ro. If its there, maybe this is
causing the problem.

[ubuntu-in] Why dhcp3 never works in ubuntu..?

2009-03-07 Thread sanath kumar
Hello friends,
I was trying to net boot my desktop machine. The desktop never is able to
get the IP address from my laptop. I was examining the packets using
wireshark. My desktop was sending dhcp request messages but my laptop never
responds with any dhcp offer message. I tried various configurations of
dhcp3 but none worked. Finally I uninstalled dhcp3-server and installed
dnsmasq and in a jiffy my desktop picked up the IP address from my laptop
and started to boot. Four of my friends also tried doing netboot with
dhcp3-server but in vain. Why is dhcp3-server so badly written. And cant you
ppl correct the bugs in it. Why is it a big headache to configure
dhcp3-server. Cant any GUI be written for it..?

evince is good

to edit pdf's you have two options (atleast)

install pdfedit - this takes time to get used to but is useful for minor
editing

ther other option is , if you have openoffice version 3.0 or later is to
install the pdf import extension (available in ubuntu repository) this is
*very useful*

However there are other options where you can export the pdf to a text file
and use the contents

Please try okular:
http://okular.kde.org/

It allows you to add annotations, notes to pdf files using Review
(F6). Although it doesn't write it to the file, it stores your changes
in an xml file in ~/kde4/share/apps/okular/docdata. So, if you intend
to share your changes, make sure you distribute this xml file as well.

 Bonjour,

«Acer recommande Windows XP.» Tiens donc.

I think the easiest way to do this is to open up the GIMP and 'glue'

there is any other way of doing it, unless you start running separate

Also, it tends to be easier on other people if you create a new email

Ubuntu Netbook Remix problem with Jaunty

2009-03-07 Thread Hammer Attila
Dear List!

I installed Ubuntu Jaunty Alpha5 Netbook Remix version with my Asus
Eeepc 701 netbook.
The system is very fantastic. Jaunty starts my netbook 25-30 second (I
using Ext4 filesystem). All hardvers works fine.
I found one problem, and I don't known how can I solve.
When I try going to the desktop with Ctrl+Alt+d combination, not happen
nothing. I removed netbook-launcher applet, because it is inaccessible
with Orca, and remove netbook-remix and maximus packages. I installed
ubuntu-desktop package. Interesting, but my wife says me the desktop is
not displayed (short test I put some icons with the desktop).

Short question: I install normal Ubuntu Jaunty Alpha5 version my
netbook? Normal version producing this positive results (starting 25-30
second and all hardware works fine)?
I known, this netbook remix version is now yet a test release, but
thanks this good work with developers, this is the first Ubuntu release
with start fast my netbook (600 MHZ Cpu, 512 Mb memory and 4 GB SSD).

Hi everybody,

I need some help. I have to run a real time program and I don't know what to
do.
Does Ubuntu Studio allow compiling and running real time programs ?
If it does, in that case all I have to do is to install it ?
Otherwise, could you advise me?

Thank you for your help.

Getting M-Audio Delta 66 working

2009-03-07 Thread DennisMail
Hello list,

I just got my M-Audio Delta 66 soundcard today and I got it in my system. Now,
I tried to get it work, but I just can get something out of the card.

So let's begin with the details. I disabled the on-board soundcard in BIOS and
rebooted. So lets see:

$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS690 Host Bridge
00:02.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS690 PCI to PCI Bridge (PCI Express

02:0f.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8110SC/8169SC

I am not quite sure, but there is a PCI Multi-Channel card which should be
mine. As I saw on the m-audio site that drivers for this card are available
from opensound.com, I downloaded the file oss-linux-4.1-1051_amd64.deb there
and installed it. So far, so good.

Now, next goal would be that the soundcard is giving out something via one of
the 4 outputs. And this is were I fail. So lets see:

$ ossinfo

Ah, the soundcard is correctly detected. So I start

$ ossxmix

and, in another bash

$ osstest

In ossxmix, I see that something is happening, but I can't hear something via
speakers or headphones. I guess it has to do something with jackd, but as I am
not quite into the basics, perhaps somebody could tell me what I am doing
wrong? Thanks a lot

Dennis

Re: [usersUbuntuStudio] Jack lags...

2009-03-07 Thread Robert Klaar
Update, so after a nights configuring I think I know wherein the problem
lies. :), I added Jack to the tray and now, when I start it, it gets
completely red. I checked this up and supposedly it has to do with xruns(?).
I also noticed that it helps changing the frames/period setting, but only to
a degree(even at highest it's no good). I see now that this is not strange
at all since it's the xruns that are causing it to slow down in the first
place... Now all I have to figure out is why the xruns are being sent. Also
I noticed something when starting alsamixer, I only have the masterbar.

working can in one way or another be related to Jack. When I started up a
new project in Ardour, a notice came up stating that I had locked my memory

nothing has changed with how it sounds, allthought it seemed reasonable(I'm
sitting on a dual core 2.3 ghz with a ram of 3 g so I find it hard to think
anything's wrong with the hardware per sey), I also checked with system
monitor and it is hardly working it would seem when running jack. Also Jack
shows, in the Jack-ctrl window something like 1(249), 249 is increasing,
don't know if this is normal or not since I'm new to the whole thing. Anyone

I strongly believe that you really do not need these, we play with alsa
(+jackd, +pulseaudio) here, not with oss.

I use for both computers Ubuntu Studio 8.04 AMD64. You are using Ubuntu
Studio 8.04 AMD64, right?

So I (and you) have the driver (module) on right place. No need for
anything else.

Use alsamixer for every four channel, lift (arrow keys) them near to
77 - all should be in green, not red anywhere. Then quit qiwt q.

$ alsamixer

Same with envy24control.

http://www.arkki.info/howto/Ubuntu_Studio/07.png

Now you plug your monitors to the break out box - OUTS 1 and 2.

If play some mp3 files with vlc/rhythmbox/younameit, there should be
noise/sound/music.

Audacity works at this point, too.

So play first with alsamixer and physical OUTS, then we go deeper - to
the world of the Jackd.

No - when I use it without -R option. Jackd works without -R, but then

uso do kernel 'generico' é recomendado.

o motivo for segurança, você estará vunerável).

 carregado, e agora?

Eu prefiro colocar minhas customizações logo no inicio... Mas a
linha está assim:

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] firefox travando com java

2009-03-07 Thread Onilton Maciel

sudo update-alternatives --config java ?

2009/3/7 Milton Bender Júnior milton.ubu...@gmail.com

 2009/3/7 Gerson Barreiros fse...@gmail.com:

Vocês que estão tendo problemas... Como instalaram e que plugins são
 esses?

 sãos as mesmas:

 Shockwave Flash 10.0 r22
 Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_10
 Ubuntu 8.10 x86 / Firefox 3.0.7

assim:

-
# This file lists those modules which we don't want to be loaded by
# alias expansion, usually so some other driver will be loaded for the
# device instead.

# evbug is a debug tool that should be loaded explicitly
blacklist evbug
-

-
# This file lists those modules which we don't want to be loaded by
# alias expansion, usually so some other driver will be loaded for the
# device instead.

blacklist r8169

documento do OpenOffice. Recomendado: Kompozer.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] carregar modulo no boot

2009-03-07 Thread Hugo Leandro

If it is installed, please remove it.
# rmmod r8169
note: If the built-in driver cannot removed by rmmod, please edit
/etc/modprobe.conf and comment 'alias eth0 r8169'. Then, remmove it again or
reboot your computer.

Unpack the tarball :
# tar vjxf r8101-1.aaa.bb.tar.bz2

Change to the directory:
# cd r8101-1.aaa.bb

If you are running the target kernel, then you should be able to do :

# make clean modules(as root or with sudo)
# make install
# depmod -a

 Greetings,

I joined this team awhile back and brought up some ideas in terms of
Internet Marketing. I initially voiced my thoughts about Internet
Marketing in #ubuntu-marketing. This may be the best place to voice and
 further that discussion.

I know that Ubuntu Marketing, as a team, helps with marketing materials and
marketing in general, however I did not see much on Internet Marketing on
the Wiki or as a response in the channel. I thought this would be the
 perfect team for the job.

I was thinking we could further the scope of the team and extend our reach
a bit to help teams with things such as:

 1. Planning virtual launch parties (utilizing Twitter, for example);
 2. Internet Marketing and/or Strategy (perhaps groups / forums / identity
 and messaging); or,
 3. Even go as far to help with social marketing (and niche marketing)
campaign planning to further leads (as far as LoCo teams go -- active
 memberships) and activity within groups.

 These are just three examples.

I was wondering if the team has any thoughts or ideas. Also, has any action
like this been taken in the past?

 Sincerely,

Craig Huffstetler | xq on freenode

I understand your point concerning money and the value of it in Internet
Marketing. I really do not think that is the case always. It's usually more
time investment and this is where we will be spending. Money may be the case
for certain services such as: Google Adwords, printing flyers, and other
such things. However, I think it is up to us, as Internet Marketers as you
point out, to embrace technologies that do not rely on money. For example,
social networking.

Twitter is a good example. So are Facebook fan pages or even open source
network/community projects.

A Twitter Example:
For the Jaunty release party we could provide teams with core examples of
how to take their release parties up a notch. Instead of just having them
in local bars and restaurants, why not connect the whole state or region
using one simple Twitter hashtag? This is where I think Ubuntu Marketing
could come in and at least help provide some unique ideas more than
anything. We have the brainpower, why not use it?

Another example is SEO and getting people to membership sites.

One other thing is simply active members for the U.S. LoCos. I know that a
lot the U.S. LoCos do not have a problem getting members, but have a problem
having *active* members. That's a key differentiator and I think we can
help. It's all marketing and communications: setting guidelines and helping
team leaders, prospects, and members understand the role that activity plays
in community.

I think it starts with us and we can really make a difference.

I think hashtags and groups are already being used on twitter and identi.ca.
Trying to get everyone to standardize tags across twitter, identica, flickr,
picassa, youtube, etc, etc is probably a good idea.

Re: Wine

2009-03-07 Thread Kirill Shatalaev

rm -r ~/.config/menus
rm -r ~/.wine

~/.local/share/applications
~/.local/share/desktop-directories
~/.local/share/icons

(Директория Программы в ~/.share/applications/wine; в
~/.share/desktop-directories и в ~/.config/menus/applications-merged

[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS shares not unmounted before network is shut down

2009-03-07 Thread Alexander Sack
Thierry, please extend your approach to not kill wpasupplicant on
shutdown either. i think thats the problem that is left with your ppa
packages here as the ones reporting that your ppa package doesnt help
are using wireless.

Once you have that please request a merge for the 0.7.1 branch and if
you want also for the 0.7 branch in intrepid and I will take care that
this gets into jaunty and after some baking to intrepid.

** Description changed:

- I installed smbfs, and then put some entries into /etc/fstab, so they
automount on startup. An example of this is here:
+ IMPORTANT: this bug has enough information; please don't post _anything_
+ unless a developer asks for specific feedback! By posting to this bug
+ you only make it harder for a developer to spot the gem comments. Please
+ use the me too feature of launchpad to signal that you are affected
+ and would like to see this fixed.
+
+ I installed smbfs, and then put some entries into /etc/fstab, so they
automount on startup. An example of this is here:
//ip address of nas box/share name /home/hamish/directory name cifs
credentials=/home/hamish/.smbcredentials,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,uid=1000,gid=1000
  0 0

** note the use of cifs in the lines above **

(The username and password are in the .smbcredentials file)

On startup, for each entry in the /etc/fstab file, I get the following in
dmesg:
[ 70.495504] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to IPv4 socket. Aborting operation
  [ 70.495569] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -101
But the shares are mounted, and a nautilus session opens up (which is also
annoying...)

Also logging off with CIFS shares mounted in /etc/fstab, it sits with an
error message:
  CIFS VFS: server not responding
CIFS VFS: no response for cmd 50 mid this number changes
And takes about 2 minutes to timeout. This also happened with Gutsy

Should the timing of the mounting and dismounting be changed so that it
works? It is related to the starting of network-manager and CIFS shares
trying to connect on startup *before* the network is up, and dismounting
the shares *after* network-manager is stopped.

It's not a MIR process question, we have traditionally moved packages

I just want to say thank you to the person responsible for Kompozer.
Notwithstanding some problems with Ubuntu 8.10, I still say a big thank
you for providing us with a FREE HTML writer program. Keep it up! I
still use it and I'm still going to use it because I found it really
great. Hopefully one day a good solution would be found.

Hi,

I'm the KompoZer Debian maintainer (KompoZer isn't yet in Debian, but it is in
the NEW[1] queue).
I Uploaded my preliminary work in my PPA for Ubuntu users:

Jaunty:

Intrepid:

[Bug 47768] Re: Mount Root Files System Failed

2009-03-07 Thread Nick Dwyer
I have found similar hang in Hardy when installed on dual-boot mode with XP on
Sony Vaio desktop.
Only occurs after first major update. If I re-install from CD it works fine.

I have since discovered same on Acer Aspire 1 with 8.10 after replacing
Linpus. Ubuntu is sole OS this time. Workaround was once again to
reinstall (this time from USB) and NOT update.

If Ubuntu ain't broke I ain't fixing it!

[Bug 339080] [NEW] python-kde3 can not be installed because of requesting python 2.6

2009-03-07 Thread Hokum
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-kde3

Jaunty has Python 2.6 as its part, and python-kde3 is requesting python 2.6
so python-kde3 can't be installed. Example:
~$ LANG=posix sudo apt-get install python-kde3
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
python-kde3: Depends: python ( 2.6) but 2.6.1-0ubuntu3 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

** Affects: python-kde3 (Ubuntu)

[Bug 301599] Re: firefox close-minimize-maximize tab disappear

2009-03-07 Thread manolo
Same problem using Konqueror
Version 4.1.4 (KDE 4.1.4)
Using KDE 4.1.4 (KDE 4.1.4)

 on the same Ubuntu box!!!

So, I suppose it's not a strictly related to Firefox problem.
