[ubuntu-art] one hundred paper cuts

2009-06-22 Thread Kenneth Wimer
Hi all,

For those who haven't heard the word, check out
https://edge.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts
specifically
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+milestone/round-1
which is a list of the ten papercuts we would like to solve first.

Take a look and see what you can do to help. Quite a few of the bugs need more
information, etc. so it would be an easy way to get involved (and a great way
to learn more about launchpad and ubuntu).

Re: [ubuntu-art] Chocolate Color Scheme

2009-06-22 Thread Kenneth Wimer
On Sunday 21 June 2009 15:17:46 Allan Caeg wrote:
Ubuntu always had an earthy color scheme, one with brown and orange.
There have been a lot of discussions about this because many users have
violent reactions. However, it is difficult to veer away from the color
scheme because it defines Ubuntu very much and the rationale behind it
 is reasonable.

Perfectska04 has a famous GNOME theme suite. Probably, a lot of you are
familiar to it and are using it. He has a set of icon themes, GDM
themes, and gtk themes that have different color schemes. His latest
color scheme is the Dust variant. This scheme's look and feel is based
on the color of chocolate. Prior to that, he always had a Human
variant, which is orange. The Dust variant feels more earthy and looks
much more elegant. For some reason, I am much more comfortable with the
chocolate feel. Maybe because orange really feels cheaper. It has always
been associated with low end products and services while a dark shade of
brown, in my opinion, reminds the user of chocolate and leather.

Shiki-Dust and GNOME-Dust fit the Ubuntu desktop very well because of
the look and feel that they create. It is earthy like the Human theme,
just more elegant, in my opinion. There may be some usability issues
because of the dark elements of the theme but the only known bug due to
its dark nature is a small color issue in Firefox which is fixed by
adding a user style mentioned in
 http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Shiki-Colors?content=86717 .

Jaunty included Dust and New Wave as alternative themes. I believe that
Shiki is much more bug-free and elegant than most themes and it is in
very active development. In fact, OpenSuSE 11.2's default theme (Sonar)
is based on the green variant, GNOME-Wise, of the theme suite. I suggest
at least including the Dust variant of GNOME-Colors to the future
versions of Ubuntu as an alternative theme to Human, if not as a
default. I understand that it has a little different set of principles
from the Human icon theme as it includes application icons. This can
easily be fixed by not including those icons, though.

I am sending this to the Ubuntu Artwork Theme and Ayatana discussion
because its an artwork issue that can be included in the 100 papercuts.

Here is a link to the screenshot of my desktop with the GNOME-Dust
 theme. http://g.imagehost.org/view/0082/Screenshot

I like that everything fits together so well color and design-wise but I miss
something which catches my eye, something which stands out -but only a little
bit- and tells me how sexy it is :)

FYI, GNOME-Colors, Shiki-Colors, and Arc-Colors are all sitting in

2009-06-22 Thread mac_v
Hi,
I'v uploaded the smileys [face-smirk,face-kiss,face-crying]... to the
breathe submissions page.

Other than the face-glasses [Michote is probably going to upload a new
version soon],the only smiley remaining is the face-monkey... I wont be
doing it... so someone needs to finish it... Michote?

@Cory: awaiting your feedback and the elusive weekend mail :P
Also Michote showed interest in completing smileys listed according to
the
http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-naming-spec/icon-naming-spec-latest.html#guidelines
, while they havent been listed in the breathe wiki submissions page,
You havent responded regarding that ? Will you be needing them?

like notify-osd I think its slick but at the moment its a little out of

 grey might be nice IMO.

Here is a theme I've been working on for a few months with Ubuntu
specifically kept in mind during the development. It is rather dark,
but remains extremely easy on the eyes while maintaining a certain
shine. I believe this has the originality and usability that could
benefit the Ubuntu Desktop.

This theme was developed with the help and input from many members of
the artwork community. The color base is largely inspired by the GDM
that appeared in Jaunty. After seeing those colors together, I realized
an accompanying theme would be aesthetically pleasing and not done by
many others.

I am hosting the project on Launchpad and have yet to create a Wiki on
Ubuntu-Artwork. Any bugs, feedback, thoughts, input, would be greatly
appreciated. It's at 0.2 release, but actually much more stable than the
version would imply.

[ubuntu-in] How to do dual boot install of Ubuntu on Mac

Hi folks,
Thanx for all the help you've provided me but I have this question, How to
safely dual boot Ubuntu and Mac OS X on a MacBook Pro 15 inches? (the reason I
ask this question is coz in my college they require all their students to buy a
laptop and they only allow mac and windows laptops. And windows laptops are
JUST PLAIN UNSAFE, so I have only one option and that is a Mac)
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Bah, sue them and get what? Tell them to sell Linux pre-loaded
laptops? There are barely any models in the market that do that and
those are not the ones that come under Education discounts. He'll only
get hackled by the college authorities if he does that.

You can find numerous guides on the web for dual booting with OS X
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MactelSupportTeam/) but if you want to use
Linux, I don't recommend you get a Mac. The hardware is quite weird
and is built to be used with Mac OS. You will have small/big issues
that will keep nagging you :-) Instead, get a Windows machine, format
and use with Linux. Whee!

On the other hand why do u need to install ubuntu when you are having MacOsX
 which is simply awsome.

Even though such statements usually attract flame wars (which I have a
lot of interest in ;-), I'll give my opinion here anyway. I've been
using OS X for almost a year now (before using Ubuntu for almost 4
years) and I find Ubuntu far easier and fun to use than Mac OS. Even
though the UI of Mac OS is quite good, there are other kinks in the OS
(and general ones that closed-source OS' usually have) that simply
don't exist in Ubuntu or other Linux distros.

Re: [Ubuntu-QC] Pas de connexion filaire

2009-06-22 Thread Martin Gamache

 / Matt

Hi (again)! I'm a relative newcomer to Ubuntu, a refugee from the Windows
Wonderland, and I like it very much. However, lately the hard disk churns
and churns, almost all the time, and startup is very slow. Even writing this
email has taken a long time, because sometimes everything else comes to a
 halt.
___

Might be the HDD that is having problems...
Try SpinRight form www.GRC.Com I have bought it and it DOES fix
drives. It is a small APP that you create an ISO file that you burn to
CD that you boot from.

!!Please note this app is only for normal HDD and not for the new
solid state flash drives!!

2009/6/21 Paul Webster paulwebbi...@googlemail.com:
 Thanks, Lucy.

The system monitor gives memory usage as about 38% of about 700 Mb (I have
 750 Mb of RAM).

This will create a file called
dmesg.txt in your home directory. Can you copy the contents into a
pastebin and give us a link please?

I managed the dmesg.text file, but don't know what a pastebin is. I looked
it up in Google but couldn't make head or tail of it.

http://pastebin.com - first hit in google. It's a way of sharing
short-lived but long bits of text. You copy and paste something into
it and get given a unique link that you can pass around to whoever.

However, I've copied all of the file into an RTF document which is attached.

 Thanks for all your help,

Okay. It all looks fine so far (I don't know how long the machine was
running for though?). However, I did notice that it tried to resume
from disk, but this failed so it started normally. I imagine this
would slow things down when booting. Did you do a normal shutdown or a
suspend? I know nothing about suspend and resume so maybe someone else
will be able to advise on this.

Otherwise, it might be worth checking out smart-notifier to check out
the hard drive fully.

can think of if you're running the same browser on two different OSs.

Or just change general.useragent.extra.firefox in about:config.

User Agent Switcher lets you change browser identity at the flick of a
drop down switch, having to wire into about:config and remember what
you're supposed to type in each time would tire rather quickly, methinks :)

The browser identity is not the problem.
The relevant tesco page is simply not being correctly nor completely
shown. In fact it seems to be a bit intermittent, on one machine it at
first did not work, then later it did work. It seems to be firefox
version specific too. 3.0.10 is ok, while 3.0.11 is a problem

However, a change of browser to Epiphany, worked very well.

Hi Alan,

My wife had a similar problem with 7.10 and 8.04, and the default
versions of Firefox that were installed on them.

Intermittently, it prompts to download/save a .aspx or some other
binary file. Whatever option you choose, a bit of the web page goes
missing.

My workaround was to install the Windows version of Firefox using
Wine, but I'll also try Epiphany. It's a bit confusing (at least for
me!) to have to use a different Firefox icon on her desktop when I
want to visit tesco.com...

You can use unetbootin (which is cross platform) to copy an iso to a
USB stick and make it all nicely bootable. So long as your computer
supports booting from USB then you're set.

IIRC if the machine can suspend/resume to disk, you always get a
message saying that it failed to resume from disk, starting normally
(or words to that effect). It does a quick check for a resume image
signature in the swap partition just before booting normally - this
check is very quick, and won't be causing Paul's problems.

FWIW, smart-notifier is a GUI to smartmontools, which usually runs in
the background and checks your hard drive for any issues that may
indicate failure (like a large number of bad blocks or a sudden
increase in response time).

[ubuntu-uk] Custom Ubuntu Image pendrive problems

2009-06-22 Thread Tim Dobson
Hi guys perhaps you can help.

I'm producing a customised Ubuntu alternate CD at the moment so we can
install Ubuntu at work with a custom set of packages, in our case,
orientated towards Asterisk.

I've followed the instructions on the Ubuntu Wiki and the iso image
appears to work fine on a CD.

However, we would like to put this iso image on a USB pendrive.
I've used unetbootin and usb-creator but both, sadly give the same problem.

Initially it boots up fine however when it comes to search for a CD
drive it doesn't find the usb disk and fails on that option meaning one
cannot continue the install.

The specific error message reads The Installation CD-ROM could not be
mounted. This probably means that the CD-ROM was not in the drive. If so
you can insert it and try again
(and it then asks you whether you'd like to try again with yes returning
the same message and no returning a list of tasks in the install process
however you cannot advance without it knowing where it should expect the
CD image.

Does anyone have ideas on how to solve this or work around it?

Thanks,

If you have enough RAM (about 1GB or more) you can install distros

VirtualBox is in the Ubuntu Repos and is easy to use for this purpose.

Startup being slow could be any one of a number of things.

If he booted without the splash screen perhaps he can see at what point the
thing hangs and report back, as I'd imagine it is one particular stage in
the boot process that's causing that issue. But, also, if you do have

Okay, missed that.

I find atop rather good because it lists used memory against
committed memory, and if the latter is actually more than exists (ie.
physical+virtual memorycommitted memory) it's a sure sign that
there's something eating memory like there is no tomorrow - and it
paints it in red too, in order to highlight the issue.

Worth a shot in diagnosing the issue. At least it will rule out some

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Firefox, ubuntu and tesco shopping online

2009-06-22 Thread Kevin Safford
Hi

We too had problems with Hardy and Firefox, and several exchanges with
customer services. They admitted that the site is designed around IE,
and ended up directing us to use the 'accessibility' site - you get
directed to it when you sign on, if Javascript is disabled. It doesn't
look as nice, and my wife isn't too keen, but it has worked so far.

I pointed out that directing people to a more basic site based on their
choice of operating system and browser was a bit like sending customers
round to the back entrance unless they drive up in a certain make of
car. I don't suppose it did much good, but it made me feel better.

Indeed. I was going to register objections without having seen what

I was worried that might be something lost with Empathy.

I agree, and that's why Launchpad doesn't do that. It actually does the
exact opposite whenever possible. With that in mind, I believe there's
nothing to remedy.

It specifically preserves the header comment from the PO file that was
initially imported, exactly for this reason. But, sometimes a PO file
was *first* created in Launchpad before it ever existed upstream, and
such files have this copyright notice.

As for actual translation credits in messages like translator-credits
or Your names (KDE credits message), we've had to automate that since
people were removing upstream credits without realizing that. So, now
such messages are automatically extended with clearly marked Launchpad
contributors, but credits as imported from upstream remain in.

Hopefully this clarifies some things. If there are any particular cases
that bother you, please get in touch with me and I can look into them.

Cheers,
Danilo (Launchpad Translations developer)

gigedit not working as plugin in Linuxsampler/qsampler, only as standalone

2009-06-22 Thread Gerhard Lang
Is anybody around here who has successfully installed q-, j-,

Qsampler and gigedit as standalone run smooth apart from some

From what I can tell, your device must first be supported by linux (Ubuntu).
Then, you can configure wine to use an existing midi device.

So, first step is to get the hardware working under linux. You should
probably post a new topic to this list, giving all the details about the
hardware. Or try searching google, maybe someone has tried it before.

Then, if you can get it to work natively in linux, you just need to get wine
to use it. Open up the wine configuration application
(Applications-Wine-Configure Wine). In the audio tab, you should be able
to select the correct MIDI device or something...

Ubuntu Studio 9.04 locks Up During Updates and Network File Operations

Hi

I have been trialling both the 64bit and 32bit versions.
I have been getting random lockups that seemed to be related to network

Have tried apt-get and get the same problem.
This is running as a dual boot installation on an Athlon dual core

Ubuntu 9.04 32bit on my laptop is running fine on the same connection.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

[Ubuntu-BR] Apagar arquivo, com nome e permiss ão errada

2009-06-22 Thread Rafael Bedendo

sudo mv bsd/mcinx_x.1.2-0.20081101cvs/2ubunvu3_i386.deb lixo.deb

Obrigado,

Sim, o problema é a barra no nome do arquivo.

Verifiquei alguns problemas no dosbox e no dosemu rodando no 9.04:
  problema verificado no dosbox).

  Utilizo o Ubuntu 9.04

O que você entende por similar? Abrir os arquivos para visualizar/editar,

 mesmas funcionalidades, a mesma linguagem?

O arquivo do autocad é proprietário.

 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Device/RealtekRTL8187b

 no
 8.10.

Daí se for, vou
 ver

wine.
Unicode.

Re: ubuntu 32 bit vs 64 bit

Linux alves-desktop 2.6.28-13-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 2 07:57:31
UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

-
