Guys

Thanks a lot. Did a little googling and created a new xorg.conf file in /etc
with the display modes. Works and res is now the max that my monitor
supports.
I disnt it all these days because i had read that 9.10 does not need
xorg.conf for display. Turns out its true BUT will be used if it is found.

I had one Airtel Broadband with Beetel modem a year ago. But their sales
department and IT dept. got me crazy. I documented that interesting story at
http://blog.threeslice.com/

I got my Modem configured with DHCP, so rather manually dialing and
connecting was overcome. Just I had to plug the wire in my system and voila
:)

You can ask your Technician who will visits you to configure it. Request
them to have it DHCP, life would be easy. Also ask for USB cable, if your
Modem has USB connection options too. Ubuntu recognizes the modem, when
interfaced through USB.

Beetel has embedded Linux. just telnet into it, providing usename : admin
and password (you must be knowing it, else ask airtel, thats your device).
you will get intoo the bare sandbox shell.

I have been using Beetel wireless adsl router since past couple of
years, haven't faced any problem. Is this the wired router or one with
wireless ?

Also, there are some tricks to get to "advanced" settings (atleast on
the wireless ADSL router I have). The trick is to login in using the
following page :

http://192.168.1.1/main.html
(i.e. add main.html to the IP address).

On my wirelesee router (220BX) the first piece had a hardware problem
due to which connection would drop after a while. This was in March
2008. They subsequently changed it around that time itself, and
haven't had a problem with the replacement unit.

Have been using Ubuntu 64 bit with an AMD Quad Core (9.10, upgraded to
10.04 beta recently). Haven't had any issues with 9.10 at all. With
10.04 there is some problem with flash, which will hopefully be
resolved before final release.

I would say go for 64 bit.

Hope this helps

sir,

in one of the reply, i read - 64 bit OS can be installed - for a dual core -
2 GB RAM.

can you reply on these :
- is it OK to load 9.10 with core 2 duo, 2 GB RAM.
- also, is there a seperate version for 64 bit in 9.10
- is the installation is just like the 32 bit version.

of course - i will also google for these. it will be more reassuring if it
comes from the community, so thats why i just mailed this.

thanks

Dell has been advertising Netbooks and Notebooks with Ubuntu, these are
about 3000 Rs cheaper than Windows.

This is an advertising for their vostro series.

[ubuntu-in] Display resolution low

2010-04-07 Thread NARENDRA DIWATE
Hi Guys,

Sorry for repost, but was not able to getr any reply or solution. So
reposting

I have been a linux user for the past 4-5 years on my desktop and have been
using ubuntu since Jaunty.

Since then as well as now, the display that i get is 800X600 which I have to
manually change to 1024X768 EVERY time I login. With Jaunty I had edited the
Xorg.conf file to set the resolution at 1024X768. However i am unsure that
it will work in Karmic.

Now I would appreciate your answers to a few Q's:

How to permanently change the resolution to 1024X768. Will editing Xorg.conf
work, If so how. Despite using Linux for the past 5 years i am not a command
line geek, but can work if given clear instructions. I am most comfortable
with a GUI.

Is Lucid too likely have a similar display issue.

Note: I have a AMD Athlon X2 3600 64 bit Processor on a Gigabyte MB with
Nvidia GeForce 6100 GPU and 2GM RAM on a Samsung SyncMaster CRT monitor and
use Ubuntu x86_64 without any modifications or theme changes and without
desktop effects enabled. The system also has Restricted Nvidia Hardware
driver 185 installed and enabled.

2010-04-07 Thread NARENDRA DIWATE
Hi

I have always been using a 64bit version of linux for my 64bit PC. Initially
it was OpenSUSE, but now dor the past 4 years its been Ubuntu. I never felt
any lack of 64 bit versions of any programs. Always got what i needed.
