[ubuntu-in] Booting Ubuntu 10.04 from ISO using grub2

2010-04-16 Thread Sandeep Raghuraman
It's possible to boot Ubuntu 10.04 from the ISO using grub 2 ! You can do
this with the current beta versions too. I've tested with Ubuntu 10.04 Beta
1 ISO.

I found out how to do this from this awesome guide for GRUB:

http://members.iinet.net/~herman546/p20.html

The page for booting ISO's using grub is here:

http://members.iinet.net/~herman546/p20/GRUB2%20Configuration%20File%20Commands.html#Loopback_Boot_Entry

This can only be used for distros that actually support this feature. I
guess Knoppix would work with this.

You'll have to add the following to your /boot/grub/grub.cfg file.Add it
just before the line containing "### END /etc/grub.d/10_linux ###"

echo "Adding Ubuntu 10.04 Beta1 ISO boot entry" >&2
cat << EOF
menuentry "Ubuntu 10.04 Beta1 ISO" {
loopback loop (hdx,x)/path_to_iso
linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=path_to_iso
noprompt noeject quiet splash
initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.lz
}

The x in (hdx,x) must be replaced by the appropriate numbers. It refers to a
disk partition. For example on my system /dev/sda3 is my Ubuntu partition
and it is (hd0,3).

path_to_iso must be replaced by the path to the iso file. For example if the
ISO is stored in your Downloads folder the loopback and linux lines would
be:

loopback loop
(hd0,3)/home/username/Downloads/ubuntu-10.04-beta1-desktop-i386.iso
linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper
iso-scan/filename=/home/username/Downloads/ubuntu-10.04-beta1-desktop-i386.iso
noprompt noeject quiet splash

It works faster than booting from a CD. You can check out the new theme and
the change in the minimize, maximize, exit buttons which have been placed on
the left. A bit annoying for me since I tend to move the mouse to the right
whenever I want to use those. Gimp has been removed and the Pitivi video
editor is now included.

Have fun!

Please tell me if there any errors here and correct them if you can.

I would strongly say, we lost the Cyber-war and we will continue to loose
despite the fact that many countries investing millions of $. Sole reason
being, "Black hats can find just one hole to exploit, but White hats need to
guard whole set of thousands of holes present in many applications,
Operating system services, Kernel, so on and so forth. Adobe and M$
applications are most vulnerable"

The only chance we have is to revamp the entire web, start from ground
zero. :P

[ubuntu-in] Antony calls for action plan to counter cyber threats

2010-04-16 Thread Ramnarayan.K
Is unplugging computers from the net a reasonable measure against
cyber spying. The minister says that gaping holes exist in the cyber
secuity systems. This leads to the obvious question that if security
agencies find it hard to keep their data / information safe then how
safe is the data concerning the common person, that by the very nature
of its use has to be kept online (reference the grandiose UID pipe
dream)

United News of India
New Delhi, Apr 16:
Defence Minister AK Antony today called upon the Army Commanders to
prepare a crisis management action plan to counter cyber attacks and
cyber terrorism in coordination with various national cyber agencies.
Addressing the Unified Commanders' Conference here Mr Antony said
cyber-space had emerged as an important medium for information-sharing
but at the same time, the existing technology was susceptible to
misuse by anti-social and anti-national elements.
''Of late, extraordinary and unprecedented cyber crimes have taken
place across the globe, exposing gaping holes in cyber security
systems. Although Defence Services at all levels have taken steps to
counter cyber threat through stringent implementation of cyber
security policy, there is still a requirement to ensure that all
loopholes in this regard are suitably plugged,'' he said.
The government has already constituted a committee to look into the
issue of cyber security with regard to strategic data maintained by
Defence Services.
The committee includes, among others, Secretaries of Defence Ministry
and the Department of Information Technology.
The Standing Committee on Defence in its report, while describing it
as a step in the right direction, has asked the government that all
initiatives should be taken by involving various technical agencies
like C-DoT and cyber experts in the country to ensure fool-proof
security of defence data being maintained in computers and servers by
Defence Services.
Describing the recent cases of cyber attacks as ''reminders of our own
vulnerabilities,'' the Defence Minister said close interaction with
national agencies like Computer and Emergency Response Team (CERT-In),
NTRO, MHA and Ministry of Communication and IT to prepare crisis
management action plan for countering cyber attacks and cyber
terrorism was essential.
The opening of the two-day Conference was attended among others by
Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju, the Chairman Chiefs of
Staff Committee and the Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal P V Naik,
Chief of Navy Staff Admiral Nirmal Verma, Chief of Army Staff General
V K Singh, Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar, Chief of Integrated Staff
Committee Air Marshal S C Mukul and Commanders and Officers from the
Service Headquarters and Ministry of Defence.
Mr Antony expressed happiness over the progress made to improve
coordination among Armed Forces in various spheres.

At any cost I will avoid Swiftfox, just because it is closed source. As you
said, it is more of the security concern than ethics for me.
We wont even know what is happening behind the scenes.

Also, I would like to add one more point.
Take any browser and start browsing (Don't do any benchmarking) and you will
notice there there will be no difference in browsing speeds, the main reason
is we cannot notice the speed difference, it is so negligible (milli / micro
seconds). Also the benchmarks are based on Javascript rendering speed, to
the best of my knowledge, most of the websites have more of HTML/CSS than
javascripts.

When you create a logical drive in Virtualbox (VDI), unfortunately it takes
space from harddisk only.
The logical disks will be stored *$HOME/.VirtualBox/HardDisks *folder. You
can copy to some other place and even swap around different operating
systems.

If you have less space, then allocate around 6-7 GB (10GB should be great).
But problem with Windows XP is we cant have complete control over the growth
of the size. It keeps growing fast as we install applications.

after installing it, i goto new virtual machine wizard.then click on
next.then i type the name for new virtual machine as "XP on Ubuntu".It
automatically detect the windows XP installed on the same machine.

^^^ I don't think Virtualbox does that (detect the XP installed on the physical
machine). You have the option of creating a new instance of a virtual machine
or using an existing VDI file.

Even I dont think it is possible as there is no direct connection of the guest
with the hardware(Harddisk)

Now i click on next.I have 2 GB RAM on my machine. For base memory i gave 512MB
size. Then i click to next.then i came to hard disk.i clicke don existing hard
disk which was something like ubuntu.vdi(i forgot the exact name). After that i
click on next. Now summery comes and i clicked on finish.

it was showing in virtual box OSE that "XP on Ubuntu is powered off".so i
click on start.A new black window open(its probably
boot window).it was showing some information like "You have the Auto capture
keyboard option turned on. "i clicked on ok without doing anything. Now it shows
that press F12 to select boot device. At this time also i have done
anything.after that this message is shown to me

"FATAL: NO bootable medium found! System halted."

This is because you did not install any operating system on the virtual disk.

What you can do is...

1) If you have iso image of bootable XP cd then it is fine or Insert XP CD
2) Right click on "XP on Ubuntu powered off " select settings, click CD/DVD-Rom
and click on the options you would like to.

3) now boot up and install the XP as you would do normally but it happens very
fast (I donno the reason)

Once installation is done, unmount the CD/DVD mounted and you can start "XP on
Ubutnu"

I know this explaination is very less for amature level, if you have any
question please post back.

so i want to know that how can i overcome with this problem.Actually i
don't know how to configure the virtual box?

You can either migrate your existing XP installation to a VDI file (virtualbox
image) but as far as I know it is a convoluted process involving intermediate
tools like qemu. You can install XP on a new virtual machine. Instructions to
do so can be had here [1]. It is for an older version of Ubuntu but the gist of
it remains the same.

Totally unrelated but it would be really nice if you posted plain text emails
to the list. Would really appreciate it :)
