[Ubuntu-ch] About the Swiss Team and other things that bother me, was Re: Ubuntu-ch Digest, Vol 45, Issue 10
On Wed, Apr 28, 2010 at 14:03, Daniel Stoni d...@stoni.ch wrote: Folks, would you mind to postpone the discussion to take place during a real meeting? Next RP would be a good occasion ... Which I can't attend, sorry. A bit very far away for me in my current situation. So, weather you like it or not, this discussion is going to happen on this very mailing list, as uncomfortable it might seem to you. As far as I am concerned, all those subscribed to the mailing list are team members, shifting the discussion to a party that most people don't even know about or can't attend is excluding. We used to have meetings on IRC, where we should normally coordinate the work, and on the mailing list. Expecting people from all Switzerland to flock to Winterthur, which, at least for those from the Tessin and the Suisse Romande, is not exactly near or by any means central, is a bit much, Especially for a release party that is still not to be found on our wiki, nor have I seen any ads for it go to other Swiss Free Software groups. So that RP you are talking about is a local party by local people, but certainly not an official Release Party by the Swiss Team, since the team has only been contacted once by mail and nobody bothered to use the official media to do the organisation, despite my explicit demand to do so.. But I guess it was too much to ask for people who don't give a damn that there are people not speaking German in this country... Which reminded me only about that old discussion we had a few years back where people were complaining that not everything was in German, because of one single person not speaking English. I have spend 3 full days preparing ALL the wiki pages for the portal in FOUR languages, everything was posted to the mailing list, all the wiki pages are there, NOBODY did ANYTHING since to make this work. Funnily enough the same people who complained then are the ones organizing that party, but by carefully avoiding to include the team. That's what I call dividing. Now think about... Just to remind you: The Ubuntu Swiss Team is an official LoCo Team of the Ubuntu Community, with a wiki, a mailing list and an IRC channel. There are no other official channels in my eyes, nor are there in the eyes of the rest of the Ubuntu community or the LoCo council, so whatever is done elsewhere and not notified to any of these communication channels is not official at all. period. We aka the founding members of this team have worked hard to bring it where it is and make this a recognized official LoCo Team, and I very much hope the following leaders will work in the Ubuntu spirit as well. But by doing that outside of the Team is certainly not the best way to start with... Regards, Myriam. PS. May I point you to the current discussion on the LoCo-contacts mailing list? All team leaders of the official teams will not only have to sign the CoC, but also the LCoC. So think twice before doing things without including the team in the discussion, there are not many ways to do it right, but certainly a lot more ways to do it wrong. PPS. For digest subscribers, would you please read the digest mails correctly and change the subject line to avoid breaking the thread, as advised in the digest mail header? Re: [Ubuntu-ch] Lucid Lynx Release Party in Winterthur
Hi Myriam Don't shoot the messenger :-) As you mentioned in the other mail this release party is a non-official one. It is the initiative of Ubuntu loving people having difficulties to express themselves in English. Now I am for 2.5 years in Switzerland and I found out that the majority of Swiss people is extremely focussed on regional aspects, not only in terms of distances but also in terms of languages. That makes it even for me as German person, fluently speaking one of the official languages in Switzerland, difficult to get in touch with the normal Swiss people. And this is only because I do not speak the regional dialect, I am only able to understand it. Having this in mind, I do not think the needs of those people can be satisfied with one central instance regardless of the language. LoCo-teams are build to satisfy - regional needs (see USA) - cultural needs (see Kurdish team) - language needs (see Catalan team) These are only examples. Now, it is up to you, Swiss people, to cope with this situation. I am only a guest. We will offer gt; KeySigning, CAcert assurances, beverages and free WLAN ;-) Has this been added to the Swiss Team wiki? People are asking in the #ubuntu-ch channel, so some advertising in the correct places might be an idea... Also, I don't really see why we need yet another website for Switzerland (ubunteros.ch). That's just splitting up the community. We already have a 4-language portal ready, it only waits for input, so please keep things together. @Dani: how far are you with the website? Could this been done for the Lucid release? Regards, Myriam. PS. Dirk, I really wonder why I spent 3 full days on preparing the multilingual portal on your request if noone has contributed since... PPS. Please don't count on me to keep this together right now, the Swiss Team is big enough to run without me, but apparently it really doesn't without clear guidance... *sigh* a pitty to see things falling apart :( -- Protect your freedom and join the Fellowship of FSFE: http://www.fsfe.org Please don't send me proprietary file formats, use ISO standard ODF instead (ISO/IEC 26300) -- Ubuntu-ch mailing list Ubuntu-ch@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-ch
Re: [Ubuntu-ch] Lucid Lynx Release Party in Winterthur
Hi all, The difference between this release party and the oldest is that there was no communication from the beginning. The oldest one was organized like this: - Mailing list informed for starting organisation - IRC meetings to discuss the location (city) and the topic for the release party THEN - Informing the mailing list about what was decided + posters For your's: We receive the invitation what does mean? It looks like you want simply ignore the existence of all these people. Have a look of the next install party that will be in Geneva, we are informed since 26.01.2010 and it will be on 08 October 2010. This is what we can call communication between a team. Keep in mind that there's some people who don't speak French and there's also some who don't speak German (like me) that's why we keep english. The only official website for me where I can look for information is http://www.ubuntu-ch.org something else then this one is not part of our official material. I join Myriam to tell that the release party in Winterthur have nothing to do with Ubuntu-CH Best regards, -- Hassan El Jacifi https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HassanElJacifi -- Ubuntu-ch mailing list Ubuntu-ch@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-ch

Hello everybody! My name is David Arturo Pastrana Trejo. I'm from Mexico City, Mexico Distrito Federal. My english is not perfect, but I will do my best to explain who I am. I'm 24 years old, and I'm studing at Insugrentes University an IT carreer (about 8 months acomplished). I was surprised by the Ubuntu world recently, about 1 year ago. One of the best professors in my university told me about the open source software, and I discovered a new world of posibilities. I'm very happy (and excited) of join this community, I have good skills to write in spanish language, advanced knowledge of IT (software) and I'm an experienced developer in .NET languajes, PHP, C++, Javascript, T-SQL queries... so on, you could be asking, why not to join to developers community? The answer is that I have no much free time, so I consider that this contribution is less absorbent (but doesn't less important) than to develop. Well, this is all for now, I'm ready to start contribute and make our community a stronger and trustful community. Re: [ubuntu-in] Companies with Ubuntu
ok a good answer for you . HCL technologies, but you will not get the exact answer for this question, because all depends upon the Client's Requirement. Generally Companies have dual boot systems with windows and linux or a single OS system. They have servers running Linux Distribution. Simply Employees SSH/Telnet to the servers. Freedom to install OS is limited to very few companies, but freedom to install software may be there, where one can install VMware and can run Linux. We encourage everyone who is a member of the UKTeam to attend whether to take part or merely watch from the sidelines. If you have anything in particular you would like to table for discussion at the meeting, please add it to the following page:- https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeamMeetingAgenda You will need a launchpad account to edit this page. If you would rather not register on launchpad then feel free to mail me or reply to this post with items for discussion and someone else can add the item(s) for you. Please note however if you wish to discuss something then it makes sense for you to turn up at the meeting or it may get passed over. We try to keep the meeting to just one hour, but if there is a lot to discuss then we may overrun. Once the meeting is over we usually post the log to the page linked above pretty much immediately, then over the next few days whoever chaired the meeting disseminates the information into a more manageable summary on the same page. As April is starting to draw to a close, I'd request that anybody that did a LoCo related activity during this month adds a reference to it on the April 2010 reports page [2]. Technically the deadline seems to be this Sunday (2nd May), so as many entries on there before then would be appreciated. I've added a header for the last meeting, and not sure it requires extra comments. However, for other events (The epic Museum visit for example) would really benefit from a couple of lines. Remember, even minor activities are welcome! Anything members of the LoCo have achieved.. including (not limited to) gaining Ubuntu Membership, first archive upload or anything that you (or someone else has done) that is awesome that in turn, makes the LoCo proud. Re: Speech Dispatcher 0.7 Beta -- Please help with testing
Hello all, There is a rather large local security problem with your use of unix sockets. It is very easy for a local hostile user to cause a denial of service Thanks for pointing this out. I think your concern, is valid and we will fix it though I don't think it's one of the most important problems for accessibility today. The situation is as follows: 1) Such a described DoS is as easy with the former inet socket implementation (any hostile user can open the port first and thus block it) that we have used till now. So this is actually nothing new. 2) With session integration as done by Luke Yelavich (e.g. assigning ports numbers as BASE_PORT+uid), we get problems even in case of no-attack, since there is no guarantee that all 7560+ ports will be free to use and not blocked by any other service. 3) With ports and without authentication (former situation), in most current installation setups, any local user could connect to a session run by any other user, which was a large documented problem which was removed by the use of unix sockets with correct permissions. 4) The reason why the socket name is predictable is that clients could predict it and connect it without having to refer to a third party. If someone could suggest a good and universal (not Gnome or X based) mechanism so that Speech Dispatcher knows which address to run on and the clients know which address to connect to, without any need for some pre-configuration (like the ever problematic SPEECHD_PORT variable), please send it to us! 5) We might as well try to use other destination, namely ~/.speech-dispatcher as for all other speechd stuff (predictable but only writable by the given user). 6) We totally support a DBus interface (it was our plan if there would be more funding), but I think it is necessary to also have a lower level system communication mechanism for clients like speechd-el or clients running outside of X. I suggest we move this now technical discussion to spee...@lists.freebsoft.org . Re: Announcing the OpenTTS project, a fork of speech-dispatcher
William Hubbs napsal(a): There has, in my personal opinion, been very poor collaberation between the accessibility community and Brailcom. We announced that we are not currently able to put a reasonable amount of work into it, but that we welcome anyone willing to help. We avoided any unfair promises, but offered collaboration. Please, read the answer to the Open letter by Mr. Buchal carefully. We didn't receive any concrete offer for such collaboration. So it can be also said that there has been a poor collaboration between the community and Brailcom. I don't think it's fair either way. One example, in my opinion, of poor collaberation has been Brailcom's extremely minimal involvement in the development process. A development repository was opened by Luke so that some of us would be able to get changes into speech-dispatcher. Many patches were sent to this list, for a long time, but there has been extremely minimal participation from Brailcom, so the official repository was never updated and Brailcom hasn't been responding to our patches. We have put a huge amount of resources and our own personal effort into the Speech Dispatcher project within the nearly 10 years of its development. And among other reasons also due to a minimal feedback from the community, we started to put more of it into other our projects in the last two or three years. As we have responsibility for these other projects, we can not switch our long term plans from day to day just because the community decides they now need us. Thus we avoided making any promises that we are not able to guarantee. That's all. We repeatedly asked Brailcom for direction on this list and were told that they couldn't commit any resources to speech-dispatcher at this time. So, speech-dispatcher was becoming a more important project to the accessibility community, but the maintainers were not working on it, and they had no idea when they would be able to work on it again. Not being able to promise is not the same as not having an idea. Another concern I personally have is Brailcom's speechd-up project being deprecated as well as their comments on their speechd-up project page about speakup itself being replaced by other technologies. On the contrary, speakup has a very active user base and shows no signs of being replaced. We only announced that we are not going to continue speechd-up development. We will be glad if someone else will take the project and go on. That's the difference compared to Speech Dispatcher. In my opinion, the fork happened because of poor collaberation and slow responsiveness from the maintainers. I understand that what Brailcom spends their time on is controled by funding, but they made no effort or very minimal effort to work with the community. As well as the community made a little effort to help us. No one asked, hey, I would like to see a new release because I feel the feature XY deserves it. What can I do to help that happen? We were only asked to act or make public promises. Yes, we could continue doing unofficial releases and waiting for them to do official releases when they get funding, etc, but the problem there is that if we add functionality in the community releases, there is no guarantee that that functionality would be accepted by Brailcom in their official releases. I wouldn't see anything wrong about having unofficial patches in Speech Dispatcher packages. That's the packager's responsibility. Of course, it is more convenient when the patches get included upstream, but let's not exaggerate the situation. We said we are going to include them and we were working on it as the time permitted us. We announced the existence of these unofficial versions in the meantime. I personally would be open to working on speech dispatcher, but there would need to be a big change in the way Brailcom collaberates with the community for me to be comfortable with that. If you really mean it, if you are able to accept the increased overhead of collaboration which is compensated by avoiding duplication and confusion, let's stop fruitless discussions. I understand your reasons and if you try to understand ours pragmatically, there is still a chance for more collaboration. I am stopping any arguments on this topic right now because it is really wasting time. Please, consider our limited possibilities and try to suggest a model that would suit you. Re: Announcing the OpenTTS project, a fork of speech-dispatcher
On Wed, Apr 28, 2010 at 03:35:58PM +0200, Tomas Cerha wrote: William Hubbs napsal(a): There has, in my personal opinion, been very poor collaberation between the accessibility community and Brailcom. That's all. I understand that you have other projects you work on, and you cannot commit much time to speech dispatcher. However, when the community did start adopting it, and sent multiple patches to the list, there was still no response from you. Not even a message explaining that you did not have funding and would look over the patches when you had time/funding IIRC. Quoting from http://www.freebsoft.org/speechd-up: -- cut here -- The aim of the (currently deprecated) Speechd-Up project was to give users the possibility to use the Speakup screen reader with software synthesis. It worked as an interface daemon between Speakup and Speech Dispatcher, who took care of the software synthesis. The approach with providing console accessibility through special kernel code however proved to be problematic in many aspects and given the current developments in accessibility technologies, these tools have been substituted by other means. -- cut here -- Note the second paragraph. Speakup is far from being replaced, and it is still under development. So, I would say that this statement is partly false. Yes there are some issues, but those are being worked on, and the kernel developers have been positive towards speakup development. If you do not have the funding to do releases, why not figure out a way to share this responsibility with the community? Are there any other such changes planned (i.e. new content) that were discussed in the meeting? I understand that bug fixes will be applied as well, but in order not to break existing translations, I'd like to ask them to be kept at minimum. I know this limits the work of documenters, but I'd still like to ask you that -or at least remind everyone involved-, as I think this update will not get as much attention from translators as a Documentation String Freeze prior to release, unless we announce it well. Obviously there is a balance needed. We haven't discussed the introduction of any major new content. The bug fixes that we would be talking about will generally relate to one, or at most a few strings here and there. At the same time, any bug fix in documentation pretty much will always involve a string change of some kind, and this is an LTS release so it's worthwhile establishing a process that allows us to fix bugs and translations with them. I think it's going to be necessary to change some strings and that's exactly why we'd like to give the translators a good period (4 weeks or so) to update the translations. Ok, thanks for the info. One thing that I forgot to mention is that we'll need to sync this documentation update with a new language pack release, but I guess it's just a matter of scheduling it. We should certainly announce it well. I imagine that this list is the central point for announcements but am happy if the request for translation gets announced elsewhere when ready. Yeah, the list is certainly the central point, but what I meant is that people tend to follow more the list when there is more translation activity (i.e. between user interface freeze and language pack translation deadline). Se quiser pode inclusive usar esse mesmo programa para salvar o boot do seu sistema para o dia em que der pânico e o grub sumir. Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Desativar Mensagem
