Try launching gimp from terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal). When it crashes check if anything is printed on terminal. This sounds more like partial/broken upgrade or not all updates are installed. The error that appears on terminal should help determine the problem. The reason behind cheese' delay might be that it takes time to detect the webcam. You can run 'gstreamer-properties' and set default input in video tab. Regarding firewall - By default no servers accepting incoming connections are installed. Hence firewall is not enabled by default. P.S. - It will be great if you can write your queries in proper sentences so they are easy to read and respond.
