Looking at the screenshot it seems that your modem+router is actually working in bridge mode and your PC is getting the IP directly from the server on ISP side. It is possible that this was changed by the tech support guy (typical of them). So in Ubuntu try following command - sudo pppoeconf. After you have configured connection, you can start connection with 'pon dsl-provider' and stop with 'poff dsl-provider'. Hi, In the live session you can plug in the the Belkin wireless adapter. If it is detected as a wifi adapter, Network-Manager will show it as an available wireless connection. It should then scan for available wifi networks, and the rest should be the same as connecting to any wireless network. Even with the same model name/number there is no guarantee that your experience will mirror someone else's. Linksys/Netgear/Belkin/D-Link etc. do not make the wireless chips that go into these adapters. They merely source them from vendors like broadcom/atheros/prism etc. So different models from the same vendor will have very different chips inside and even worse they are known to switch chip vendors between different revisions of the same model. So a Netgear Foo 54G Rev.a might work flawlessly while Rev.b of the same model will be a completely different chip/device in the same/similar plastic shell and absolutely unusable. Hi there ... At last night's ubuntu-adverts meeting, I arranged an experimental survey for research. I hope some of you can consider helping with it. First, find one or more willing volunteers from among friends. Volunteers need to be 'Ubuntu Virgins'. They are computer literate, but have no experience at all of any flavour of Linux. Give them a Maverick 10.10 LiveCD and ask them to run it and familiarise themselves with Ubuntu. After a week to ten days, arrange to interview them and make out a report. There are no specific questions; just ask them how things went, and report back on their findings, what problems they found, and what they would have liked to do but were unable to find a way of doing it. Note their overall impression and whether they would consider moving to Ubuntu. Please give reasons for or against. The interview needs to be conducted with great sensitivity and a good listening ear. If all goes well, you should hardly need to say anything; just listen! I have placed an etherpad at: http://openetherpad.org/cZDc393hcW for feedback and comments. Please consider helping with this. [ubuntu-uk] Pastebin for images
Hi all Can anyone recommend a place to paste images for others to see. I'm trying to overcome the problem in Launchpad Answers where you cannot post attachments (like you can in the Bug tracker). I assume that pastebin.com only does text. [ubuntu-uk] Problems using Alpine on Ubuntu 10.04
Hi guys, I was using Alpine, the text-based email client on Windows 7 for a while and it was working very well. I was very happy as I didn't have to use Outlook or Thunderbird, which really bog down my laptop. Today, I decided to get rid of Windows for good, and installed Ubuntu 10.04, installed and configured Alpine. Shockingly, the experience has been nothing short of frustrating! I keep getting a status message 'waited for x seconds for reply from server. still waiting...' all the time, for all my mailboxes! I never had this issue on windows! And, it asks me if I want to close the inbox (or connection), but doesn't accept any input, and keeps trying to open my inbox again, till it gives up and closes it by itself. The questions will be a brand new set on the topic of Ubuntu and may include some, all, or none, from this week's guest publication, the official Ubuntu Book 5th edition (which is also one of the prizes). If you are not UK based you are more than welcome to observe, and join the audio on the Mumble server, but prizes are only going to be sent to UK addresses. The questions will remain available in #ubuntu-trivia for anyone to use after Saturday. Installing ubuntu desktop hopefully Later
Yesterday, I downloaded ubuntu10.04 and it also comes right up but without sound. On this particular hardware, nothing has made any sound after 9.10 and I went up to 11.04. After running the alsa-info test, I can tell that the sound card is up, but those who are more expert than I am can probably tell more about the status of all the flags and registers that alsa-info.sh reports on. I thought the simple mixer controls all seemed set to similar values to what they are in ubuntu9.10 so I think the problem is that the software that feeds data to the sound card, the actual audio data, is broken. One of the how-to descriptions for ubuntu10.10 said to wait for the melody to play after selecting the language about 5 minutes after booting the CD. On this system, there has never been so much as a click out of the audio port in 10.04, 10.10 or 11.04. The system seems solid on all the later versions except for the sound so I think this will be a pleasure to experiment with if there is a fix for the sound on this hardware. I do have an output for hwinfo if anybody can use it as I suspect there are other similar systems out there as this one is not the least bit exotic. -- Ubuntu-accessibility mailing list Ubuntu-accessibility@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-accessibility

So a document with exactly 215x307mm is what we need. Regarding DPI -- 300 would be ideal, 200 is okay if you can't get to 300. Ideally, using SVG would do away with the DPI issue, but that's not the case if you plan to include bitmap images in the ad. Also, +1 regarding the idea of showcasing a new direction for Ubuntu Studio. The point about it being perceived as a mostly audio-oriented distro was true for me as well :-) This is a great opportunity to get noticed, so it's worth going through a little effort to make sure your intended message passes through. Nevertheless, in my personal experience, it's better to come up with a mock-up *quickly*, and then iron out edges from there. Finally -- we're lurking and reading, trying to figure out where we can begin work without clashing with existing aesthetic perspectives. As I mentioned to Scott, we'd probably like to start by customising the UI of Inkscape and Gimp to begin with, in order to make them look smooth inside the UbS general UI direction. Along with a deadline, you'll need to be in on the theming chat that we hopefully get together w/the Libre graphics guys as per Ricardo's suggestion. We'll need to have a overarching concept/direction that is cohesive. @Scott - Can you head up scheduling a meeting with these guys on IRC? Just something to brainstorm on concepts. The Libre Graphics advertisement is independent of the website update. The offer from the Libre Graphics folks was for the next edition which is scheduled to drop in May. I do not think we have the latitude to change this deadline without confirming with ginger, Ricardo, or Ana. I *think* Cory is suggesting that we schedule to roll the website out in time for 11.10. I had originally hoped to draw some attention to Ubuntu Studio and solicit some graphical design work flows from professional graphic artists who use open source tools with the advertisement. If we have a definitive, exciting, and revolutionary plan for the 11.10 release (XFCE, new UI, etc) we might want to see if we can hold the ad to coincide with 11.10 and create some excitement. Re: Ubuntu Studio 11.10 UI discussion. GNOME3, Unity, XFCE and Studio users workflow.
Couldn't see if anyone had said anything about it, but there is a audio distro that uses XFCE and is a live distro as well. It's called Puredyne and can be found here http://puredyne.org/download.html. There is a live CD and a live DVD to choose from. Since we are considering both XFCE and the live medium, Puredyne aught to serve as a decent example. On 04/10/2011 11:18 PM, C K wrote: Hello folks. For folks who don't know me I'm Cory Kontros. (with Scott's blessing) So lets kick things off. Here's how I see things. There's alot of flux going on in computer UI design. GNOME, Canonical (w/Unity) and Google (w/Android) all look to be shifting to this single app focus kinda design. Where visually, you don't see much going on but the currently focused app. KDE and OSX are currently the most traditional. I don't see this fitting for Studio users workflows. So, in looking at our options (considering most of our apps are GTK) XFCE seems like the best move. I know there are other WM options to consider but they all feel weaker in comparison to the XFCE option. Xubuntu has done some great work lately. Without seeing it I proposed to Scott some options that can very close to what they currently do. Xubuntu does: 1 panel across the top and AWN as a launcher on the bottom. (http://imagebin.org/146291) I propose simply using Avant Window Navigator. (http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/6728/screenshotoof.png) It currently can handle 90% of what a panel can do. But that 10% is important. Namely the absence of a network manager app. I've seen some in the past but nothing current. A bit radical but its something I hope to prove works nicely with testing. Now please feel free to discuss whatever. This is by no means a done deal but it is currently the direction agreed upon at the last -dev meeting. -- ailo -- Ubuntu-Studio-devel mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-devel

Robert Ancell [2011-04-13 10:20 +1000]: * They come with quilt patches pre-applied in the source, which is not only horribly confusing and error prone, but also breaks merge-upstream pretty thoroughly. I hadn't noticed that. The seems like absolutely the wrong behaviour. Can this be fixed? I'm afraid it's called a feature :/ Current method (perhaps I'm missing something here): 1. Checkout bzr branch of debian/ directory Right, debcheckout -a packagename. 2. Get tarball of current version (I use apt-get source, though you have to be careful that it is the same version) 3. Get tarball of latest version (I use bzr-buildpackage and then ctrl-C once I have the tarball in the build-area/ directory) Not necessary, bzr bd-do or bzr bd -S do that for you. If the archive already has it, it gets it from there, otherwise it uses uscan to download it from upstream. 4. Unpack tarballs somewhere manually 5. Copy debian directory bzr bd-do does that. It puts you into a temporary dir with full source which you can work in, and if you exit 0, it copies back debian/ so that you can commit the changes. 6. Diff two versions for changes (i.e. NEWS and configure.ac) - I use meld here I usually don't need that for NEWS, as you can just grab the part which applies to the latest release. configure.ac is tricky indeed, usually I find it easier to get it from an upstream git diff. If that's impractical, debdiffing the old against the new source works too, of course. 7. Update debian/rules debian/control etc 8. Muck around with quilt/edit-patch to add/update/remove patches quilt push / edit stuff / quilt update etc. should be done in the bzr bd-do work tree. 9. Copy back debian/ directory changes to bzr branch bzr bd-do does that when exit 0 Martin -- Martin Pitt| http://www.piware.de Ubuntu Developer (www.ubuntu.com) | Debian Developer (www.debian.org) -- ubuntu-desktop mailing list ubuntu-desktop@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-desktop

Re: [Oneiric-Topic] LightDM for display management
Le mercredi 13 avril 2011 à 10:26 +1000, Robert Ancell a écrit : Sure, there are definitely a number of required services. Note I'm not ruling out running a GNOME session, it just depends if you can have a cut down enough session to make it work. The services you require in a login screen (basically power management, networking, audio) really are all system services - I hope that GNOME is working towards taking these things out of the session in the future. They're actually out of session for the most part: gnome-power-manager is merely talking to upower, nm-applet to NetworkManager, gnome-volume-control applet to pulseaudio (though which is per-session in Ubuntu IIRC). But you need something to display a GUI, you can't only rely on a system service. In GNOME 3, network and volume control are even handled directly from the Shell's process, and the GDM greeter could do the same. Also, if you want accessibility, you have to start a magnifier, a screenreader, or an on-screen keyboard per-session. So I don't think you can really be more lightweight than GDM *if* you want to implement all of these. You can consider they're not essential for most people and use a stripped-down DM, but you won't have those features. Tradeoffs... For those that are interested in having a release party for 11.04 basically I was proposing we meet at Exomod cafe in Highgate for a bit of an install fest. They have fast wifi there which will help with any updates we need to do installing those must have apps we always seem to do right after an install.I will burn half a doz cd's before the day so no one should have to d'load the actual iso which will save time and of course keep the cafe happy. RE: Brisbane Release Party for Natty Narwhal
Good evening, So we decided at the IRC meeting for the Brisbane release party I would knock up a quick doodle poll to see what time/date suited everyone best. I have put the poll at http://www.doodle.com/mgfwuc5u5kydrgi7#table so please add yourself and tick the options *you would actually attend* if it were on at that time. Due to it being so close I will leave this open until the end of the weekend and first thing Monday I will post the results back to the list (I think I set it up as an open poll so everyone should be able to see how it's going anyway). If anyone has any better suggestions than the pancake manor we're all ears. Happy polling! I haven't seen mention of a Canberra Natty release party, so I might as well kick off the proceedings... Do we have any Canberra people interested in a Release Party? Since I live outside Canberra but work in Civic, a weekday lunch in civic would suit me best. But if others would prefer something outside hours, then that can be arranged and I'll see what I can do about attending. First, though, it would be good to get a show of hands who is interested and when they would be available before setting dates and times. Recap of April's Team Meeting Looking forward to May
Good morning/afternoon/evening Ubuntu-AU'ers, I'm sorry for being a bit tardy with the report about the Team meeting last night. All the usual details (agenda, topic log and full log) are now available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam/Meetings/2011April12 for you all to check out. Feel free to discuss further on the list any items you feel weren't covered well enough in the meeting. As per the discussion at the meeting we are going to trial using the loco.u.c site for our next meeting in an attempt to consolidate our calendar in one location (instead of having a wiki, website and loco.u.c) because it's getting pretty cumbersome having to create 3 different events for every meeting or get together. So for the next meeting on the 10th of May the agenda and all the details are available at http://loco.ubuntu.com/meetings/team/65/detail/ - please take some time to familiarise yourself with our loco.u.c space and let us know what you think of it on the mailing list. Natty:Keyboard mapping selection comes to late during installation
Bonjour, Keyboard mapping selection comes too late during installation. When one wants to manually partition the drives on, for example, a French-Canadian keyboard, the key mapping selection window hasn't been presented yet (will be after the time zone selection) thus obliging the user to manually call for that change which is not even possible if Ubiquity as been started directly during the boot process without selecting the Try Ubuntu option. Is there any plans to change this? Regards. Natty: inconsistent way to access System configuration topics between Unity 2D and Unity 3D
Hi, During the french translation of ubiquity-slideshow-*, I noticed that the instructions to access the setup tools like accessibility, mouse, ... apply only to the Unity 2D. What about the access to setup tools in Unity 3D ? Could we mention that the directives apply only to Unity 2D and explain that in the 3D version all the Unity config tools are located in the Control Center instead of the gnome system menu ? For instance, to access accessibility in Unity 3D, we have to click on the top right icon OFF, click on System Settings to open the Control Center and be able to open the accessibility parameters. You can have an example of the problem in the ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu at the point 3.https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/+source/ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu/+pots/ubiquity-slideshow-edubuntu/fr/+translate?field.alternative_language=field.alternative_language-empty-marker=3show=allstart=2= *You can get at these tools in one place: the emAssistive Technologies Preferences/em, inside the System Menu. Alas, we were unable for Natty. Therefore, Ubuntu Studio will ship with the 2.6.38 -generic kernel. For Ocelot there are two great things happening. Our work trying to get the -lowlatency kernel into Natty was not in vain and I believe we are in a very, very good position to get the -lowlatency into the repos for Ocelot. If it is in the repos then we can ship it on the image :) Testing the -lowlatency versus the -generic will ultimately determine if it is still required though. Please help us test. Ailo and Alessio Bogani have several emails on the list regarding this. Also, it appears that the kernel (at least 2.6.39) that ship with Ocelot will also allow irq threading to avoid irq conflicts. We expect this to be great news for many firewire device users and it will allow them to avoid irq conflicts without have to have the -rt kernel, which is not always available or aligned with the current kernel. == Video and Graphics == For graphic applications, we have: * gimp * inkscape For Video, we have: * blender * ffmpeg * openshot * shotwell * xjadeo There are other things like xsane and brasero that are shipped with them, but these are not necessarily video or graphic applications as I expect you are querying. We are making a significant attempt at making our package selections better and you can help with this. Please see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio/Workflows Please feel free to add to this wiki page, but please don't erase other's work. We would like to frame this in terms of a user's goal. Their goal isn't to install blender because it's cool, the goal is to seriously edit some film. So the task would be to produce a movie. Then outline the steps and the applications needed to accomplish this task. If the task is something that a significant amount of users will want then we will ship those packages if they are in the repos. We have already made appreciable improvements with audio, now we are moving into graphics and video. Help us please.
