cpu frequency scaling for video editing machines
For video editing (and for 3d content creation as well) a different issue arises: The need to minimize excess power consumption when not rendering or playing the timeline. Video editing is often done on very powerful 4 core or even 6 core computers, and these are power hogs, with CPU power dissipation alone sometimes as high as 140 watts. Although running full speed at idle doesn't mean anywhere near the same heat as full load, it can be enough to make the fan noise come up, and in some cases the rooms these machines are used in can become uncomfortably hot-I know mine does! The last thing I want to do is use more electricity first to fun full voltage and multiplier all the time, and make the room even hotter in the process. These machines benefit greatly from using all the power-saving tricks during what can be a multi-hour editing session prior to rendering, yet being able to throttle up when the timeline is played in something like Kdenlive. This is not the sort of thing I have any trouble working on and setting up as I like, but again we come back to the issue of a new user. If someone sets up a video editing workstation with any distro, finding high temps and the fans running hard compared to what they did in Windows is a real turnoff, similar to complaints about open-source video drivers on big video cards that by default have to turn off frequency scaling, again due to performance issues. Perhaps the installation GUI could ask an installer what the predominant use of their machine is to be, and recommend a setting for CPU frequency scaling, with an advanced option to override? -- Ubuntu-Studio-devel mailing list Ubuntu-Studio-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-studio-devel

These apps typically generate hundreds or thousands of faults per session, but not millions, but it's still quite a lot of noise in syslog. Then we should make sure that an appropriate rate limiting is in place, like the patch below (untested) would do. Arnd 8--- ARM: Add rate-limiting to alignment trap printk Malicious or buggy applications can easily flood syslog by accessing unaligned data. Better use printk_ratelimited for the warning to prevent this while also allowing us to see the important output. No. The logging doesn't happen by default. You have to set the appropriate flag via the kernel cmdline or at runtime by echoing that flag to /proc/cpu/alignment which can be done by root only. This is therefore a debugging facility that should not be rate limited otherwise it loses its purpose. The only effective rate limiting configuration I would recommend is to SIGBUS misaligned accesses by default. And that's also supported already with the right flag. Re: Getting rid of alignment faults in userspace
There is still going to be a small cost even in hardware fixup so this is very much worth solving despite it's becoming invisible because the chips are hiding / solving it already. But I believe that h/w feature is turned off in Linux by default. You have to add noalign to the kernel command line to enable. I think you'll find the hardware fixups are enabled by default on CPUs with that design, quite possibly it can't be turned off. The situation is much more complicated than that. There are two completely different models for misaligned accesses (v6 and pre-v6). v7 cores are only required to support the former. However even under the v6 model some instructions will fault on misaligned addresses, and the CPU may be configured to fault many others. The exact behavior depends on the particular instruction chosen by the compiler. I don't know whether Linux currently knows how to enable alignment checking on v6/v7 hardware. int main(int argc, char * argv[]) { char buf[8]; void *v = buf[1]; unsigned int *p = (unsigned int *)v; This does not (reliably) do what you expect. char buf[8]; void *v = buf[1]; unsigned int *p = (unsigned int *)v; This does not (reliably) do what you expect. The compiler need not align buf. Printing the value of p should clarify this. And, as we can see above, the simple accesses are left to the hardware to fix up. However, if the misaligned access is performed using a 64-bit value pointer, then the kernel will trap an exception and the access will be simulated. I think you've missed my point. gcc may (though unlikely in this case) choose to place buf at an odd address. In which case p will happen to be properly aligned. I'm not sure where you get 64-bit value pointer from. *p is only a word sized access, and memcpy is defined in terms of bytes so will only be promoted to wider accesses when the compiler believes it is safe. I think you've missed my point. gcc may (though unlikely in this case) choose to place buf at an odd address. In which case p will happen to be properly aligned. Sorry for being too vague. My point is to print the value of p i.e. the actual address used to perform the access, which would confirm that the access is truly misaligned or not. That won't force any particular alignment on the buffer obviously, but at least this would clear any doubt as to the validity of the test. I'm not sure where you get 64-bit value pointer from. *p is only a word sized access, and memcpy is defined in terms of bytes so will only be promoted to wider accesses when the compiler believes it is safe. Again I probably was too vague. So let me provide the actual code modified from Andy's expressing what I mean: int main(int argc, char * argv[]) { char buf[8]; void *v = buf[1]; unsigned int *p = (unsigned int *)v; strcpy(buf, abcdefg); printf(*%p = 0x%08x\n, p, *p); return 0; } That's the original, modified to print the actual address used, which should confirm there is actually a misaligned access performed. And in this case, confirmed by the kernel code I quoted previously, the hardware will perform the misaligned access by itself on ARMv6 and above. Now, if we use this code instead: int main(int argc, char * argv[]) { char buf[8]; void *v = buf[1]; unsigned long long *p = (unsigned long long *)v; strcpy(buf, abcdefg); printf(*p = 0x%016x\n, p, *p); return 0; } In this case the kernel alignment trap will be involved, and the stats in /proc/cpu/alignment will increase, as the hardware won't perform the access automatically here. In both cases the result would be what people expects, although the second case will be far more expensive. Such faults are very expensive in terms of CPU cycles, and can generally only result from wrong code (for example, C/C++ code which violates the relevant language standards, assembler which makes invalid assumptions, or functions called with misaligned pointers due to other bugs). Currently, on a natty Ubuntu desktop image I observe no faults except from firefox and mono-based apps (see below). As part of the general effort to make open source on ARM better, I think it would be great if we can disable the alignment fixups (or at least enable logging) and work with upstreams to get the affected packages fixed. For release images we might want to be more forgiving, but for development we have the option of being more aggressive. The number of affected packages and bugs appears small enough for the fixing effort to be feasible, without temporarily breaking whole distros. For ARM, we can achieve the goal by augmenting the default kernel command- line options: either alignment=3 Fix up each alingment fault, but also log the faulting address and name of the offending process to dmesg. alignment=5 Pass each alignment fault to the user process as SIGBUS (fatal by default) and log the faulting address and name of the offending process to dmesg. iirc, someone sent some months/years ago a patch to change the default That was me. but it has been rejected because there are (was ?) some libc including glibc doing some unaligned access [1], and this can happen early in the boot process. In this kind of case, things like getting a sigbus would hurt. This is only partly true. Rewind about 15 years ago when all that Linux supported was ARMv3. On ARMv3 there is no instruction for doing half-word loads/stores, and no instruction to sign extend a loaded byte. In those days, the compiler was relying on a documented and architecturally defined behavior of misaligned loads/stores which is to rotate the bytes comprising the otherwise aligned word, the rotation position being defined by the sub-word offset. Doing so allowed for certain optimizations to avoid extra shifts and masks. Then a bunch of binaries were built with a version of GCC making use of those misaligned access tricks. Then came along ARMv4 with its LDRH, LDRSH, and LDRSB instructions, making those misaligned tricks unnecessary. Hence GCC deprecated those optimizations. Today only the old farts amongst us still remember about this. So for quite a while now, having a misaligned access on ARM before ARMv6 is quite likely to not produce the commonly expected result. That's why there is code in the kernel to trap and fix up misaligned accesses. However, it is turned off by default for user space. Why? Turns out that a prominent ARM developer still has binaries from the ARMv3 era around, and the default of not fixing up misaligned user space accesses is for remaining compatible with them. So if you do have a version of glibc that is not from 15 years ago (that would have to be a.out and not ELF if it was) then you do not want to let misaligned accesses go through unfixed, otherwise you'll simply have latent data corruption somewhere. Also, as noted by someone else in the thread, you do want to test on something like armv5* or v4* because there are high chances than the trap used by the alignment fix won't be triggered at all on = armv6. Given that Linaro is working only with Thumb2-compiled user space, that implies ARMv6 and above only. [1] See commit log of commit d944d549aa86e08cba080396513234cf048fee1f. And note the if not fixed up, results in segfaults in that log, meaning that the current default is wrong for that case. Before releasing these updates to the public, we need testing of the following packages: * firefox * xul-ext-webfav * xul-ext-mozvoikko * xul-ext-bindwood * gecko-mediaplayer * moonlight-plugin-core We have published all these packages in a PPA [1], and, for your convenience, have copied these updates to natty-proposed. You can either enable the Ubuntu Mozilla Security PPA (instructions to follow) or natty-proposed. Please keep in mind, that natty-proposed might get you a lot of other extra packages as well. We need people running Natty in bare metal or a virtual machine. If you are willing to help, here's what you can do: Add the Ubuntu Mozilla Security PPA to your software sources: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa or enable natty-proposed Then, you can either run update-manager or: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade Since there are very few packages, we are tracking this transition in bug 798484 [2]. I have added verification-needed-* tags for each of the packages that need testing. If you find a bug, please file a new bug with all the details, then, comment with the bug # and the affected package name in the tracking bug [2]. If you see the verification-needed-* tag for a specific package, feel free to comment if you have tested the package and it works. If you see a verification-done-* tag for a specific package, there is no need to comment that it works, but more testing is always appreciated. If you see a verification-failed-* tag for a specific package, please check if your bug has already been filed, if not, please file one with all the details and comment in the tracking bug with the bug # and the package name. Feel free to subscribe to this bug [2] to follow the progress, but be forewarned that you will probably get a lot of E-Mail from it. Please note, packages need to be tested to migrate to natty-security and natty-updates. Thanks to everyone in advance, Micah [1] https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-security/+archive/ppa https://edge.launchpad.net/%7Eubuntu-mozilla-security/+archive/ppa [2] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/798484 P.S. The current final Firefox 5 build and moon are currently finishing building on armel and will be copied to natty-proposed over the weekend. The other architectures' packages are available in the Ubuntu Mozilla Security PPA. -- Micah Gersten Ubuntu Security Team I want to apologize for leaving out this piece of information. If you're testing in natty-proposed everything is fine. If you're testing from the Ubuntu Mozilla Security PPA, anything that requires a language pack will fail. This is due to us switching to in source Firefox language packs. natty-proposed contains updated system language packs which pull in the appropriate language pack from the firefox source. Re: About ubufox translation
BabelZilla[1] allows translating Firefox extensions in a very convenient way. The problem is that once a translator is registered as the main translator for an extensions nobody can translate or suggest strings to this extension without his permission. Narro[2] is the official translation tool for Mozilla's projects (Firefox/Thunderbird/etc.), this tool has many disadvantages but he can do the work. I don't know if we should use these tools but we can definitely learn a thing or two from them. Please take into account that Virtaal is unable to handle such mission, some of the information is lost along the way. Re: Call for testing of the 5th language pack update for Ubuntu 10.10
Oh well. It seems that we have made a mistake which means that there is an error in all of these language packs. This means that they will have to be rebuilt. Therefore, please stop testing the language presently in maverick-proposed as the new ones will need to be tested anyway when they arrive. We are very sorry for the inconvenience for those of you that have already started testing. Once again: Testing of the these language packs are off for the time being. I'll get back to you. Regards Kenneth 2011/6/16 Kenneth Nielsen k.nielse...@gmail.com: Hi translators, After a small delay the next set of language packs for Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat are now ready. We've uploaded the language packs to the maverick-proposed repository for you to test before they are released to all users. These should contain all your updates and fixes in translations done since the release date. I'd like to ask teams to test them and provide an indication that they've done so by following some simple steps and submitting a signoff, so that we know that translations have been successfully tested. Simply follow the instructions in this page and add your team's signoff in the appropriate table: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/LanguagePackUpdatesQA The deadline for the testing is the 22th of June (in a week's time). After that, we'll update the language packs we've received feedback for into maverick-updates, so that all users can benefit from the new translations and fixes. Remember that you'll have to to enable the maverick-proposed repository to get these updates: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed Notes - Remember that now you can subscribe to the iCal feed to stay up to date with language pack updates and better coordinate your work: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/MaverickLanguagePackReleaseSchedule Thank you for your help in testing translations for all users in your language!
Desta forma destroem todo o conteúdo do HD e recriam as partições (caso tenham sido modificadas).
Alex Emergy -- ubuntu-ru mailing list ubuntu-ru@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-ru
adding static ip to NM = no dhcp
If this is expected, I'll just add a 2nd config. But it strikes me as odd, so I will assume something is broken. I want to _add_ a config to Network Manager. For some reason this code in my late_command resulted in no wired connection 1 dhcp that is normally there. [Bug 776103] Re: package open-vm-dkms 2011.03.28-387002-0ubuntu2 fails to build against 2.6.39 kernels, due to missing linux/smp_lock.h
Nate, I believe you are on the right track. I know this is not the type of feedback you need (or want) in this venue. After all, my virtual platform is Debian Sid, not Oneiric; and my kernel is 2.6.39-2, not 3.0-rcx. But the underlying problems seem to be from the same causes. And I know all the dire warnings about installing Ubuntu binaries on Debian, or the reverse. But one of the reasons I virtualize non- production environments is so that I *can* screw them up ;-) But the great news is that DKMS *finally* doesn't croak: # dpkg -i *.deb Selecting previously deselected package open-vm-dkms. [Bug 799166] [NEW] KVM virtual machines crash with host on linux-image-2.6.32-32-server on AMD processor
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: qemu-kvm Since the 31st May I've been seeing random crashes in the virtual machines that we run on an AMD processor based system in our office. We run Ubuntu 10.04 on this server, which is a Dell T105 and I keep it patched with all the updates. The virtual machines we run are all very similar - they're our own build of Linux based around a 2.6.31 kernel. On 31st of May, from looking at dpkg files, I see that I upgraded the system's kernel to linux-image-2.6.32-32-server. The crashes occur most commonly when these machines are doing lots of processing, with libpoppler, ghostscript and our own software using most of the cpu time. I found that if I downgrade the kernel from linux-image-2.6.32-32-server to linux-image-2.6.32-31-server on the Dell T105, then the system is stable. I tried upgrading the kernel to a prerelease linux- image-2.6.32-33-server but still saw the freezes. I tried the same virtual machines on two Dell T105 servers (1 dual-core AMD Opteron 1214 processor) and on a Dell R210 server, running an Intel Xeon processor. The crashes can be reliably caused on both of the AMD based machines, but it seems that on the Intel based machine, linux- image-2.6.32-32-server will happily run KVM virtual machines without crashes. Looks like one of changes in the kernel between 2.6.32-31 and 2.6.32-32 is the cause of this problem. Excellent, you're still interested. I've got a fix for you to try. Attached is a custom version of mpath_prio_netapp that should not generate any more change events for you. Please post for comparison that this new version returns the same data as the old one. move the old mpath_prio_netapp to /sbin/mpath_prio_netapp.old cp the new one into sbin. post the results of the following script (adjust device range accordingly) for i in sd[a-z]; do /sbin/mpath_prio_netapp.old $i; done for i in sd[a-z]; do /sbin/mpath_prio_netapp $i; done Verify that the same values are returned from each run, and update the bug with your results. Once you verify that the updated prio checker no longer generates change events, start up multipathd again and verify that this continues to be true. I am still unable to restart the clamav daemon since reinstalling clamav on 2011-06-06. The configuration file clamd.conf was copied from /usr/share/doc/clamav-base/examples/ to /etc/clamav/clamd.conf The command: ~# /etc/init.d/clamav-daemon start resulted in a segmentation fault error. The command: ~# dpkg-reconfigure ClamAV daemon gave the following error message: Package `daemon' is not installed and no info is available. Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files, and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents. /usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: daemon is not installed. [Bug 799145] [NEW] After installing and running sugar-emulator-0.88 the mouse no longer works properly in anything
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: sugar-emulator-0.88 I installed sugar-emulator-0.88 and then after running it my mouse settings were messed up and I couldn't click on things properly.
