[Bug 585938] Re: [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic

2010-05-27 Thread Alex Wauck
As I said, this problem still occurs with 2.6.34 mainline kernel and
latest r8192se_pci from Realtek. I have a sneaking suspcicion that the
root cause is that the code is crap.

[Bug 585938] [NEW] [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic

2010-05-26 Thread Alex Wauck
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Make sure r8192se_pci is loaded (I don't know if RTL8192SE hardware is
necessary).
2. Run powertop as root.

[Bug 585938] Re: [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic

2010-05-26 Thread Alex Wauck
This bug also occurs when I use the mainline 2.6.34 kernel with the
latest r8192se_pci driver from Realtek's website. Therefore, I believe
the r8192se_pci module is ultimately responsible.

[Bug 585938] Re: [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic

2010-05-26 Thread Alex Wauck
The r8192se_pci driver seems a bit flaky in general. I would appreciate
it if someone familiar with wireless driver code would take a quick look
at the r8192se_pci code and tell me if it is, in fact, a disgusting
collection of kludges, as I am beginning to suspect that it is.

[Bug 585137] Re: cheese crashes on startup

2010-05-26 Thread Alex Wauck
The problem seems to have gone away after I switched to fglrx for the
video driver. I think I can figure out the root cause of this crash if
someone tells me how to convince the cheese build system to build
binaries without optimization so that I don't get that annoying value
optimized out stuff in the backtrace. That will probably be easier
than having someone else who doesn't have access to the hardware try to
guess what's going wrong from a backtrace, especially if the problem
turns out not to be in cheese itself.

[Bug 571371] Re: Ubuntu One sync is ridiculously slow

2010-05-24 Thread Alex Wauck
I have started a fresh sync process on a new machine, and it has taken a
very long time just to get directory names synchronized (it has not even
synchronized any file data yet, and it looks like metadata also has yet
to be synchronized for most files). The following u1sdtool report has
not changed in the entire time I have watched it.

[Bug 585137] [NEW] cheese crashes on startup

2010-05-24 Thread Alex Wauck
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cheese

On my Asus EeePC 1201T, Cheese crashes shortly after starting up. The
webcam's light never turns on. However, Kopete is able to use the
camera just fine.

I did some digging, and it turns out that g_list_sort (g_list_copy
(priv-formats), compare_formats) returns NULL. My efforts to discover
the root cause of the crash were stymied by my inability to build Cheese
without optimization.

2010-05-09 Thread Alex Wauck
Yes, I got everything transferred. It just took a ridiculously long
time. I have not needed to sync anything since then, so I don't know if
the problem has gone away. I am currently assuming that the problem was
due to load on the API servers. I will file a new bug if I find Ubuntu
One to be consistently slow in the future.

[Bug 399902] Re: synaptics driver forgets user settings on resume

2010-05-07 Thread Alex Wauck
This bug is still present in Kubuntu Lucid. Does GNOME work around it?
If so, it that documented anywhere? Really, though, if the devices have
to disappear and reappear across the suspend-resume cycle, then the
settings should be saved in the X server. I don't see an upstream bug
about this. I guess I can report it upstream when I have time.

[Bug 527458] Re: please include status messages/tooltips

2010-05-06 Thread Alex Wauck
I think the most compelling use case for tooltips (aside from the
battery indicator) is the music player. I like to be able to quickly
see what's playing, without having to click on anything. Granted, this
isn't a problem for users of Docky, which can support such tooltips for
Rhythmbox's dock icon, so maybe something along those lines would be the
best way to deal with that issue. That doesn't help the battery
indicator situation much, though.

Furthermore, KDE application indicators have tooltips, and I don't think
they will be willing to change that, so supporting tooltips for GTK+
application indicators would help from a consistency standpoint.

[Bug 571371] [NEW] Ubuntu One sync is ridiculously slow

2010-04-28 Thread Alex Wauck
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

I purchased 99 MB of music from the Ubuntu One Music Store. These files
are taking a *really* long time to download via ubuntuone-syncdaemon.
The daemon has lost its connection several times during the sync
process. I was able to download the files fairly quickly using the web
interface, though, so I know I have a good connection to the Ubuntu One
servers. I have attached syncdaemon.log showing the connection losses.

[Bug 571371] Re: Ubuntu One sync is ridiculously slow

2010-04-28 Thread Alex Wauck
Everything related to Ubuntu One syncing seems to be taking ridiculously
long. It took a substantial amount of time (probably longer than it
took for me to download the files via the web interface) just for
ubuntuone-syncdaemon to get the names of the files from the server! I
only have 16 files on Ubuntu One, so it should definitely not take so
long to do this.

[Bug 563250] [NEW] pulseaudio package does not include start-pulseaudio-kde

2010-04-14 Thread Alex Wauck
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

In order for Phonon to properly use PulseAudio, start-pulseaudio-kde
needs to be run. However, the Ubuntu pulseaudio package does not
include this script. It appears that the we just need to add usr/bin
/start-pulseaudio-kde to debian/pulseaudio.install.

[Bug 563262] [NEW] apport-kde always uses konqueror

2010-04-14 Thread Alex Wauck
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

I have KDE configured to open HTML documents in Firefox*. This causes
all KDE applications (dolphin, kmail, etc) to open web pages in Firefox.
However, apport-kde insists upon using Konqueror.

* Default web browser setting is to open http and https urls in an
application based on the contents of the URL, and text/html set to open
with Firefox. At the time of testing, I did not have KDE set to open
application/xml files in Firefox. I will try that.

[Bug 562310] [NEW] Phonon never uses PulseAudio backend

2010-04-13 Thread Alex Wauck
Public bug reported:

If I select PulseAudio output for Phonon, the stream coming in to
PulseAudio (according to pavucontrol) comes from the PulseAudio ALSA
plugin, not directly from Phonon. This may be the reason Amarok crashes
on startup when using the GStreamer backend (see KDE bug #232068).

The problem of Phonon audio output reaching PulseAudio by way of ALSA is
also present in the Xine backend, but this does not cause applications
to crash. However, the Xine backend does not play certain FLAC files
correctly.

The reason I am reporting this here instead of upstream is that ubuntu-
bug recognizes libphonon4 as being part of qt4-x11, so it seems that
Ubuntu is using Phonon from Qt4. Colin Guthrie says
(https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=232068#c3) that the correct Phonon
to use is the one from Gitorious (presumably
http://gitorious.org/phonon), not the one from Qt4.

[Bug 562345] [NEW] banshee-extension-appindicator should not depend on indicator-applet

2010-04-13 Thread Alex Wauck
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee-community-extensions

indicator-applet should not be a dependency, since it pulls in a bunch
of GNOME stuff that KDE users don't want (the KDE system tray provides
support for application indicators). Alternatively, the dependency
could be changed to indicator-applet | kdebase-workspace-bin.

The dependency on indicator-application should just go away, since the
dependency on libappindicator0-cil (see bug #560095) should take care of
that.

[Bug 557514] Re: [Lucid] Phonon pulseaudio support is broken

2010-04-13 Thread Alex Wauck
It looks like the problem is in the Kubuntu packaging:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=234072

The root of the problem, though, seems to be existence of two Phonons:
Qt4-Phonon and standalone Phonon. Who the hell thought that was a good
idea? Apparently, getting correct Phonon support in PyQt4 and KDE at
the same time is decidedly non-trivial.

Bear in mind that the patch I attached to my previous message was
generated from speedcrunch git master with git diff, so it might not
apply to Ubuntu's speedcrunch source. It's only two lines, though, so
it shouldn't be too difficult to apply by hand. If I wasn't so busy

[Bug 530730] [NEW] mlyacc-tool.cm does not call ml-yacc correctly

2010-03-02 Thread Alex Wauck
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smlnj

When using CM.make to build a project that uses ml-yacc, ml-yacc is
called incorrectly. As far as I can tell, the first argument given to
ml-yacc is empty, so ml-yacc complains about not being given a valid
file.

I have attached a project that exhibits the problem. It was derived
from a project for a compilers course:
http://www.cs.princeton.edu/courses/archive/spring10/cos320/homeworks/hw3/a3.html

To see the problem, run CM.make sources.cm; in an interactive sml
session in the as3 directory.

[Bug 519038] [NEW] GNU make package does not use dpkg alternatives system

2010-02-08 Thread Alex Wauck
Public bug reported:

The make package should use the dpkg alternatives system so that
different ways of invoking make may be easily selected. For example,
one may want debuild to use makeinvoker (from plasma-widget-makestatus)
to monitor the progress of building a KDE4-based package. In this
situation, make would be a symlink to /usr/bin/makeinvoker, which
would invoke /usr/bin/make.real.

[Bug 499632] [NEW] screen flickers whenever anything is drawn under KMS

2009-12-22 Thread Alex Wauck
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

When using KMS, the screen flickers whenever anything is updated. So,
if there is an animated progress bar, the whole screen flickers like mad
until the progress bar goes away. Also, the screen will turn completely
white after a while. When using UMS (boot with i915.modeset=0), there
are no problems.

Public bug reported:

dcraw 8.86 produces severely corrupted images when reading CR2 RAW files
