[Bug 754162] Re: logitech camera doesn't work after upgrade

2011-05-07 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Thanks for the pointer, this works for me on my 32-bit system.

Incorporating this step in the default skype launcher menu item or
script might help users. There's probably a more elegant solution, but
in any case this is still an open bug.

[Bug 754162] Re: logitech camera doesn't work after upgrade

2011-04-10 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Well, the first two are security updates, so downgrading is not an
option. http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-1107-1 and
http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-1106-1 have the details.

skype 2.2.0.25-1maverick1 seems to have been a feature release:
http://blogs.skype.com/garage/2011/04/skype_22_beta_for_linux_with_s.html
- which would make is a prime candidate for downgrade, if I could be
bothered to spend another hour researching how to do it or trying any of
the workarounds suggested in the above blog post.

But really, when the update manager recommends an update, I don't expect
it to break things and require gimmicks to get old functionality back, I
expect it to just work.

In any case, this is a package of the stable distribution, many people
will probably have similar problems and the root cause must be found.
I'll be happy to provide any diagnostic information necessary, please
let me know how.

Btw connecting the camera shows this in dmesg:

[Bug 754162] [NEW] logitech camera doesn't work after upgrade

2011-04-07 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: skype

Ubuntu 10.10 on 32-bit x86
Skype version: 2.2.0.25-1maverick1

I've been using this setup for months with no problems, the camera (a
cheap Logitech webcam) always worked out of the box. Today I installed
the new version of skype made available via the Update Manager, and now
the webcam does not work - I only see a black screen and the webcam's
activity indicator does not activate.

** Affects: skype (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 664155] [NEW] long text field contents create out-of-bounds window

2010-10-20 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

When Firefox presents a dialog box that contains a field with a very
long text string, the window seems to expand horizontally to encompass
the string, going beyond the visible screen's boundaries.

The correct behavior, depending on the context, would be to either
truncate or wrap the text string.

[Bug 664180] [NEW] main panel icons overlap or get truncated

2010-10-20 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Every time a new GNOME session starts (e.g. after a system restart), the
arrangement of icons in the main panel is

(a) Pseudo-random in order and
(b) Sometimes broken, with buttons duplicated, overlapping, truncated or not
displayed at all.

I cannot trace this behavior to anything in particular. With no system
changes, multiple GNOME sessions will yield multiple different results
for icon placement, with varying degrees of success.

The following screenshots should illustrate the symptoms.

[Bug 664192] [NEW] misleading up-to-date message when package repositories have not been checked

2010-10-20 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

When Update Manager has not been run for a few days (e.g. because the
machine was powered off), invoking the application manually gives the
user a misleading message:

Your system is up-to-date.
The package information was last updated # days ago

In my case, # was 14 days.

Update Manager should state that package information has not been
updated recently and it can therefore not establish whether the system

[Bug 95822] Re: Malone connection generates an Internal Server Error on large file attachments

2010-10-06 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Bitten by same bug consistently yesterday - it was impossible to upload
a tiny bug report (9KB).

A workaround seems to be by dumping the output to a local file with

$ apport-cli -f -p package name

...and then sending the report file with

$ ubuntu-bug report.apport

Using fully up to date.Lucid.

-A

Re: [Bug 597772] Re: indicator applet does not always display sound volume icon

2010-08-31 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Sorry but I'm unable to interactively use the computer as it's out of
my control and on another continent by now.

I can only ask its current owner to copy/paste stuff and press enter,
but not much more.

I do remember that sound output was working fine - sound input was
problematic (input was barely audible).

Cheers

Alex

 Hi,

This is odd, it might be worth noting what the log of the indicator-
applet is saying. If inidcator-sound is installed then it should appear
in the menu regardless of whether there are sound devices available
(which by the looks of the trace above there are no devices available).

It might also be worth checking for any crashes of indicator-applet.
Logs are usually saved to /var/crash/$name and path of process that died

Status in “indicator-sound” package in Ubuntu: In Progress

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: indicator-sound

I have erratic behaviour on a freshly installed Ubuntu 10.04 i386 (installed
 using alternate ISO, from CD).

The indicator applet initially did not display a sound icon. It had the
 following icons:
 1. The battery icon (as this is a Fujitsu/Siemens S7020 laptop)
 2. The envelope icon (gateway to chat/email/broadcast account)

 I installed the pulseaudio-volume-control package (pavucontrol 0.9.9-1).
Didn't seem to make any difference. Logged out of my session, logged back in.
 Volume icon was not there.

Then I fiddled with the indicator applet itself, removing it and re-adding it
to the panel, un-locking it and moving it around in the panel. At some point
 the sound icon appeared.

 indicator-sound 0.2.3-0ubuntu1

Sorry I cannot be certain what exact action made the icon appear. I believe
it should have been there in the first place.

[Bug 360460] Re: Alternate install fails requesting same disc

2010-06-23 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Swapping the optical drive for another one seems to have fixed this.

Still, the original optical drive *has* worked in the last week to make
3 installations (Ubuntu Desktop 10.04, Ubuntu alternate with encrypted
LVM, Debian testing net-install, all on i386), so I'm perplexed.

The new optical drive that appears to work now is recognized as:
scsi 0:0:0:0: CD-ROM MATSHITA UJ-841Db 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
sr0: scsi3-mmc drive 24x/24x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray

With the same medium (CD) that I was getting all the Sense error
before, no errors now...

It would appear to be a case of failing optical drive, if it wasn't
(a) failing at exactly the same point of the installation (right before
installing .debs to the target system)
(b) experienced by so many others.

[Bug 151218] Re: gnome-about-me password change when using password too simple or pam-cracklib

2010-06-23 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Seems like a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/544570

Also, I can confirm the bug in 10.04 i386. Changing the password to
something cracklib doesn't like results in a hung GUI, with no your
password is too simple/similar feedback.

[Bug 597893] [NEW] login password not synced with seahorse

2010-06-23 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I found this in http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/ideatorrent/idea/17813 -
but it's not an enhancement request/idea, it's clearly a bug.

To reproduce:

1. Create new user
2. Logon as the user
3. Connect to a wireless network that requires a password
4. Change your login (UNIX) password using the About me... tool and the
Change password button.
5. Logout of your Gnome session.
6. Login (with the new password) - you will get prompted to “Enter password to
unlock your login keyring” and your OLD user password will be required.

Workaround: Manually change the keyring password.

This bug is also described here:
http://karuppuswamy.com/wordpress/2010/06/18/enter-password-to-unlock-
your-keyring-prompt-in-ubuntu/

The user is not prompted in the first place that he/she is using
Seahorse to store the wireless network key (which is good UI design,
hiding unnecessary complexity). This makes it even more confusing when
it turns out that the old password is needed to unlock the keyring. This
should be synced.

[Bug 360460] Re: Alternate install fails requesting same disc

2010-06-23 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Same problem with ubuntu-10.04-alternate-i386.iso (tried multiple CD-Rs,
albeit of same brand). Maddeningly intermittent and then not, as #51
notes: I was able to install just fine on this machine last week, and
now that I'm reinstalling from scratch the installer loops endlessly
with the message:

===

Please insert the disc labeled: 'Ubuntu 10.04 LTS _Lucid Lynx_ - Release
i386 (20100427.1) in the drive '/cdrom/' and press enter.

Media change

===

Go Back, Continue, Changing the disk etc are all ineffective. Looks like
an endless loop.

I have restarted the installation 3 times now and it always gets stuck
in the same spot.

Hardware:
Laptop: Fujitsu Siemenens S7020 Lifebook
Optical Drive: NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A 1.5A PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
(recognized in dmesg as: sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 24x24x writer cd/rw xa/form2
cdda tray)

The last messages of dmesg are:

sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Unhandled sense code
sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key: Medium Error [current]

end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 440

So it looks like a media error, but this is the 3rd CD I burn, and this
is after the Check CD for defects has completed successfully on this
CD...

[Bug 54670] button actions settings not honored across reboots

2006-07-31 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-systemsettings

I have an IBM Thinkpad T23 laptop that works fine power-management-wise.
It suspends, hibernates etc using (k)ubuntu 6.06

The default action when closing the lid is shown in System Settings -
Laptops Power - Laptop Battery - Button Actions to be suspend.

But if I reboot the machine (or just poweroff and then on) closing the
lid does not work at all - the machine keeps on running.

After every reboot I have to go to the panel and re-apply the setting,
and then it works, for as many suspends till the next reboot.

The setting should be honored across reboots. It appears that the
setting is kept (hibernate is always selected) but it simply does not
work after a fresh boot without re-applying the setting.

[Bug 54171] redundant import wizard

2006-07-26 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

The import wizard should not pop up if it has nothing to do. On my
system, where I have no importable stuff, the nonsensical window I'm
attaching was presented to me the first time I executed thunderbird.

This window should be silently supressed if no importable data is found.

Using mozilla-thunderbird 1.5.0.4-0ubuntu6.06.1

[Bug 16269] Re: KPPP fails to connect.

2006-07-24 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Confirmed on 6.06 - since in most cases noauth is necessary, it should
be added by default.

No enlightening message to point that out either, when kppp fails - the
average user becomes quite frustrated due to lack of a sensible default.

The person who dials to some system that needs to authenticate itself
will know how to do this... so the default should make the clueless
user's life easier.

[Bug 53875] kppp does not prioritise DNS servers in resolv.conf correctly

2006-07-24 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kppp

99% of the times I use ethernet connections. Due to bug #25624 I've
manually added dns-nameservers nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn to the interface stanzas
of my connections in /etc/network/interfaces.

But when I need to use a dialup connection with kppp, after connecting
it only adds the nameservers provided by my ISP *below* the static
nameserver I've denoted in /etc/network/interfaces.

As a result, as soon as KPPP connects, /etc/resolv.conf looks as
follows:

# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
nameserver nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn = This is my ethernet DNS!
nameserver aaa.aaa.aaa.aaa
nameserver bbb.bbb.bbb.bbb
nameserver aaa.aaa.aaa.aaa #KPPP temporary entry
nameserver bbb.bbb.bbb.bbb #KPPP temporary entry

As a result, nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn which is not reachable in this scenario is
queried for DNS records, and networking hangs indefinitely.

KPPP should add its temporary entries to the top of the nameservers
list.

The fact that the two nameserver provided by my ISP are added twice to
/etc/resolv.conf is a harmless bug, as they are removed properly on
disconnection.

[Bug 53877] kppp does not assign proper default gateway

2006-07-24 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kppp

After a PPP connection is established, my prior default gateway is still
active. Therefore, it's impossible to use the newly established PPP connection
before one does a:
$ sudo route del default gw nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn
$ sudo route add default gw zzz.zzz.zzz.zzz

where zzz.zzz.zzz.zzz is the P-t-P IP address reported by
$sudo /sbin/ifconfig ppp0

kppp, since it is run as root anyway, and it provides the option to
assign the default route to this gateway, should do just that.

[Bug 53879] kppp menu entry should launch as root by default

2006-07-24 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

When kppp is installed, both as a standalone application and as found in
kubuntu, it is launched with the standard user rights.

As a result, it cannot complete basic tasks like tuning the routing
table on connection/disconnection, updating the DNS resolver records
etc.

kppp should be launched as root by default, asking for the user's
password, otherwise it is not apparent to the new user why kppp can't
work properly (no permission denied messages)

[Bug 53888] confusing button text does not correspond with message box text

2006-07-24 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kppp

When kppp is first run and anything goes wrong, the user is presented
with a popup window that says:

===
KPPP could not prepare a PPP log. It's very likely that pppd was started
without the debug option.

snip some newbie-confusing text

Should I turn it on now?
===

The buttons available are labeled Restart PPPD and Do Not Restart

They clearly do not answer the question presented to the user, and
should be a simple Yes and No instead.
