[ubuntu-uk] External drive is stuck at read-only.

2008-01-28 Thread Andrew Jenkins
I've recently been playing with a NAS drive. To set
it up I had it connected as an external USB drive.
All was going well, fdisk, mkfs, etc. and I moved a
couple of Gb of files to it.

After I disconnected it and plugged it back into my
machine it suddenly decided to be a read-only file
system. I remember a pen-drive of mine doing the
same thing and I ended up having to redo the mkfs to
cure it. This isn't a problem with a 512Mb pen
drive but with a 500Gb drive with over 100Gb of files
already on there it's not really an option.

Any other answers? I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 (Gnome).

This could be to do with unmounting. Did you unmount the drives properly
 before disconnecting them?
Right click; Unmount device or Eject.

I'm pretty certain I did but then we all make mistakes. If that's what

You can't simply download Chocolate Oranges, you need to use something

 Hi Faran

Can you be a little more specific about the errors your friends/family
 have seen?

At a guess, the only thing I can think of is Windows invoking the
chkdsk utility. Perhaps this could be caused mounting the NTFS
partition, and Windows detecting that 'it' (as in Windows) hadn't shut
it down properly hence invoking chkdsk. I don't think that you should
see any real damage to a PC.

 Chris

I was about to say something similar. Did you at any time access their
windows drive from Ubuntu. That may trigger a ntfs corruption that
 chkdsk would remedy.

I put a live CD (not Ubuntu) in my wife's Vista laptop the other day and
good old Windows happily informed me There are errors on this disc and
also offered to fix them. Thinking that should be fun I let it get on
with it only to be told that the disc was beyond repair and that I should
contact my vendor immediately. Not too sure how it was going to 'repair'
a CD mind you.

I'm sure that something similar would be interpreted as an error by many
people.

 Andrew,

Is there a way to change the init level of Ubuntu?
I used to use Mandriva and changed the init level in
/etc/inittab to '3' instead of '5'. This made the
machine boot up into a bash terminal with no GUI
invoked. If you then wanted a GUI you simply ran it
with the command 'startx'. Often when I switch my
laptop on I just want a terminal but have to go through
all the logon and GUI to get there.

Ubuntu has the default init level set to 2. 1 is used for single user
mode which you get to if you select recovery mode from the grub menu.
That logs you in as root at the console. Hitting Ctrl-D will cause the
 system to continue bootting fully.

I think setting the default init level to something other than 2 (it's
set in /etc/inittab) will require you to check which levels all the init
scripts are configured to start up. Could be messy.

Umm, there is no inittab file in my Ubuntu (7.10), that's what I
originally went looking
for. That was how Mandriva did it.

Alternatively, you could just remove gdm (or kdm) from the starting up
by using the update-rc.d command. Check the man page for details.

I'm going to investigate this 'gdm' further as two of you have now
mentioned it.

More simply you could just hit Control-Alt-F1 after you've booted to
 switch to a virtual console.

Yes I know that but it still has to go through all the GUI startup first
and I was hoping
to avoid that. Thanks for the replies both, I'll have a play later and
let you know how I
get on.

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 by the way. Hope this helps other users
to select what proved to be a simple to set up device.

[ubuntu-uk] Pen drive not automounting.

2007-11-27 Thread Andrew Jenkins

OK here goes,

Using Ubuntu 7.10 for over a year and all works well.
If I plug in a pen-drive when running Gnome it will
automount and place an icon on the desktop, 'mount'
will show the entry:

/dev/sdc1 on /media/kingston type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,
shortname=mixed,uid=1000,utf8,umask=077,usefree)

and all is well.
Now the problem, if I connect the same pen-drive when
running KDE (which I use as default) it USED to work
the same (Desktop icon etc.) however it stopped working.
Now it will not mount the drive when running KDE unless
I do it manually with:

sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /media/directory

By the way, when I plug the drive in I'm running either
Gnome or KDE as a user (the same user in both cases).

What is happening here and how do I fix things?

Regards,

Andy Jenkins.

I have used it Tony. A bit fiddly to set up in the first place I recall - I
can't remember exactly what it was that I needed to add to the system to get
moto4lin working, but I know it wasn't very clear and easy to find out.

 Hello, Mark.

You're right it's not clear how to create the /usr/usb/acm device. After
a bit of Googling I found this:

   http://www.computechgroup.com/?p=284

 I created:

   /etc/udev/rules.d/10-udev.rules

 With this entry:

 # Motorola V220
 BUS=usb, SYSFS{product}=Motorola Phone (V220), KERNEL=ttyACM0,
 SYMLINK=usb/acm/0

 Then re-started udev:

   /etc/init.d/udev restart

After this, moto4lin detected my V220.

Once it is working though, it is a good piece of kit. Allows you to
 add/remove
the pictures and messages etc as well as, if you fancy a challenge, hack
around inside a bit! I removed loads of built in junk (photos and videos etc
from Motorola as well as their sounds). I still have the phone and I can rig
it up again and re-install the moto4lin software to remind myself what it
 was
I needed to do if it will help. The only reason I don't use the phone now is
because the battery is pretty beat.

I downloaded some photo's onto my laptop, but I've got to say that it's
the fiddling about with Java on my mobile that interested me most :-)

Another program I'm interested in is Wammu

   http://wammu.eu/

I crashed and burned when attempting to install the 6.10 version on
6.06.1 LTS. I might have a shot at backporting it myself. I disabled the
Ubuntu 'backports' repository after having problems with systems that
had 'backport' versions of some Ubuntu packages installed.

I'm tempted to upgrade to Feisty to resolve the increasing number of
problems like this, and I have installed it on a desktop PC at home.
However, I use 6.06.1 LTS for everything at work on the grounds of
'stability', so I use it on my laptop for 'compatibility'...

Roll on the next LTS :-)

   Tony.

Has anyone tried this Moto4Lin work with the Motorola V3 Razr?

Not sure. Would be a bit ironic if he downloaded a pirate copy.

Someone actually comments about him running Vista and saying that is

[ubuntu-uk] iPod Text not centred.

2007-08-23 Thread Andrew Jenkins
Hi all,

I used to use my iPod Nano with gtkPod under Mandriva
LE2005 but have now switched to using Amarok1.4 running
under Ubuntu F.F.7.04.

My problem (though small) is that the displayed text of
a playing track on the iPod is no longer central but is
all left-justified. The mp3 tracks stored on the computer
are the same as before and have not had the ID3 Tags
touched. The data (i.e. Track Title, Artist, Album) is
correct but is just not as neat as it was when displayed
centrally on the iPod.

Needless to say, under gtkPod it was fine. This is not a
setting in the iPod that has changed as tracks that are
on it that were previously loaded with gtkPod still show
centrally, just the Amarok-loaded tracks are affected.
Has anyone else had this or ever better knows how to put
it back in the middle?

Regards,
Andrew Jenkins.

[ubuntu-uk] Creating 'root' account.

2007-08-04 Thread Andrew Jenkins
Hi All,

Newbie Ubuntu-ite here. So far so good, although I
have a few questions, but one at a time.

I've been a Mandrake/Mandriva user since I ditched
the dreaded MS four or five years ago. I just
thought I'd try Ubuntu (7.04) alongside my Mandriva
2005 on my laptop.

I'm used to the Mandriva way (as with most other
distros) of having a 'root' account and then all the
other 'user' accounts. The Ubuntu method of asking
for your 'user' password to then allow you to go off
and create system-wide mayhem is really not suitable
when you have curious kids. Again, typing 'sudo' and
being asked for your 'user' password doesn't strike
me as very secure.

Is it easy to make Ubuntu behave in a similar fashion
to Mandriva and if so how?

Regards,

Andy Jenkins.

You missed a potentially important piece of information, being the
hardware revision. Petty, I know, but D-Link used three different
chipsets across the three hardware versions of this USB dongle!

I have Rev B, which I believe is a Ralink chipset, and I couldn't get
this to work under Ubuntu 6.06 with Gnome Desktop. However, when I
installed Kubuntu 6.06, with KDE Desktop, I was able to configure it
to work using Wireless Assistant and I didn't touch the command line
 once.

I'd be inclined to install Kubuntu into RAM using the Live CD and see
if he can get it working using my method. If he can, install from
there, which should preserve his working configuration - it did mine.

 Best of luck

 Alan

Thanks Alan,

When I saw him in work today I asked about this revision
and he said it's rev. C.
I've passed on both the info from yourself and Peter, so
we'll have to see how he goes. Unless he gets it working I
won't hear from him now until Monday.

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu and D-Link DWL-G122.

2006-10-26 Thread Andrew Jenkins
Hi All,

I have managed to get a friend to convert to Linux
after many years of the 'dreaded other OS'.

He has settled on Ubuntu 6.06 (the KDE version) but
is having a problem with getting it to work with his
D-Link DWL-G122 USB Wireless adapter.

I'm a Mandriva user so am a bit lost and he (obviously)
cannot yet get on the web to ask this question himself
so I said I'll ask on his behalf.

He's reasonable happy with using the command line. I
had a Google about it and got some info about the
/etc/network/interfaces file. Has anyone out there
got 6.06 working with one of these adapters and if so
could they share any info with me so that I may pass it
on.

Regards,

Andy J.

It's a command line podcast aggregator but it has some excellent
