[Bug 1925766] [NEW] extensions disabled after upgrade

2021-04-23 Thread Anton Piatek
Public bug reported:

I updated yesterday (I think), and after a reboot today all extensions
were disabled.

I went to the gnome-shell extensions website, ticked to enable my
extension and it toggled on. The extensions did not seem to work. I
reloaded the page and they are off again. I clicked enabled, still
nothing. Reload page and all are off.

I check logs in journalctl and could see nothing relevant.

Eventually a bit of searching suggests enabling via gnome-shell-tweaks,
so I open that up and they're all unticked, and disabled (can't be
ticked). I realised there's a global "enable extensions" tickbox which
has been unticked. Enabling this fixes everything.

I have had to do this in the past, several months back as I had forgotten until
now.
Something is disabling this on upgrade and it is not obvious from the
extensions web-page that they have been disabled.

Ideally they should not be disabled at all, but if they are at least
there should be some more obvious feedback after upgrade and on the
extensions website

Crash just happened again, right after unlocking screen saver, then the
gnome launcher on the left and status bar at the top disappeared,
followed a few seconds later by Xorg exiting

[Bug 1753271] Re: intermittent static during audio playback

2018-03-04 Thread Anton Piatek
Looks like it may have been hardware related - as part of further
debugging both the usb speaker was completely unplugged, and the pc and
monitor were powered off at the wall - after that playback seems to be
fine

[Bug 1753271] [NEW] intermittent static during audio playback

2018-03-04 Thread Anton Piatek
Public bug reported:

Recently (since yesterday), during audio playback ("Videos" app, Chrome
(google music)) the audio will go from perfectly clear to complete
static white noise. This usually starts about 5 seconds into playback
and can last from about 10 to 40 seconds before returning to normal.

Playing with volume levels in the ubuntu audio mixer it sounds like the
audio has been auto-amplified and that is clipping and causing static,
but that's just a guess.

I've tried playing with a few pulse options to change things but can't
find anything which makes it any better.

I'm using analogue output on a usb speaker (dell soundbar), and have not
had problems since buying it or the rest of the pc, this seems to have
occurred fairly recently.

[Bug 1701726] [NEW] unattended upgrades removing kerberos and breaking system

2017-06-30 Thread Anton Piatek
Public bug reported:

Ok, so this may not be a bug specifically in unattended-upgrades, but I
can't determine where else it would be.

Having my server broken by unattended upgrades removing the primary
login system (kerberos) once might be considered unlucky, or perhaps a
typo - but now that it has happened twice it looks like a bug.

The problem seems to be that several krb related packages were removed, along
with puppet packages which we use to help maintain the system.
The result was all remote logins (ssh/http/smtp/imap/etc) were broken and
serial console had to be used to recover the sysem

[Bug 1655842] Re: "Out of memory" errors after upgrade to 4.4.0-59

2017-02-09 Thread Anton Piatek
If this kernel is not going to hit -updates shortly (i.e. days), can
something be done to pull or downgrade the broken kernel? At least
revert linux-image-generic to depend back on linux-
image-4.4.0-57-generic which doesn't have the issues and will stop more
people from upgrading to a broken kernel.

Having this sort of break in an LTS kernel is not inspiring at all.

2016-06-06 Thread Anton Piatek
Looks like it is not working today with any of the above kernels - I had
multiple screens working ok on Friday with the mainline kernel, but
today it is not working. I'm not sure what changed, I will attach the
dpkg log, but am going to have to go to windows as this is a work laptop
and i can't spend more time looking at this. Hopefully I can help debug
in future if I get time to repartition again or perhaps with a beta
live-usb image

[Bug 1589397] [NEW] kernel panic connecting display port to Dell Latitude E7470

2016-06-06 Thread Anton Piatek
Public bug reported:

Connecting an external Display Port screen wither via the dell E-Port
plus or directly via the miniDP causes a kernel panic. The crash is not
always immediate, if the internal screen is disabled when docked, then
the external screen may work, though undocking and docking a second time
usually crashes it.

Kernels crashing for me are 4.4.0-21-generic and 4.4.0-22-generic.

Testing with the mainline kernel linux-
image-4.4.12-040412-generic=4.4.12-040412.201606011712 has not yet
caused the panic

[Bug 1560524] Re: Latitude E7470 crashes in DRM driver after connecting to DELL EPORT docking station

2016-06-03 Thread Anton Piatek
Installing 4.4.12-040412-generic from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D and I am able to run a 4k screen through the dock
and DP with the internal screen running, which I couldn't do
successfully before.

Worth testing if you also have this problem. Also check your BIOS version
sudo dmidecode |grep 'BIOS Information' -A5|grep Version
Version: 1.5.3
Note that I also applied a dock-specific firmware update while in windows,
though it isn't entirely clear if it was a windows driver or if it changes any
firmware stored within the dock (
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=WNV4C
)

I've just updated the dell bios to 1.5.3 and the crash still occurs. I
noticed that plugging into a 4k tv via the builtin mini display port
also causes the crash, though not always.

2016-06-02 Thread Anton Piatek
@combnin re #11 - where did you get that kernel?

I think I also have the same iisue on an E7470 running 16.04. I can make
the external screen work through DP of the dock if I disable the
internal one, but trying to enable both either crashes instantly or
shortly after the mouse focuses on the external display.

[Bug 1444943] [NEW] trusty backport to remove sslv3

Public bug reported:

I'm getting internal scan warnings at work because znc is using sslv3.

Can we get the new 1.6 version of znc in trusty backports to remove sslv3?
swig3.0 would also need to be dropped into backports, but I think all other
dependencies should be met by the packages in trusty.

[Bug 974480] Re: Notification area whitelist is obsolete

2014-09-02 Thread Anton Piatek
It is a bit of a mixture. Looking at my status bar (with hacked unity) I
see an external (bought in) app - antivirus. Skype is sometimes quoted
by others.

I also see two internal icons, which are related to our internal
compliance.

I also have two IBM applications which are sold, and will try and pursue
bugs against them internally as they are chat and email apps.

I've sent a bit more detail privately.

[Bug 974480] Re: Notification area whitelist is obsolete

2014-09-01 Thread Anton Piatek
mpt, that doesn't seem to me a reason why we can't have a drop down area for
legacy apps. Yes their behaviour will be unpredictable for Ubuntu but it would
still work for legacy apps.
I run a corporate repository for 6000 users and we are having to fix each unity
version so our corporate apps work, or we have to move to RedHat. The corporate
owners have no interest in fixing the apps for Ubuntu, and won't give out
source code, so they won't be updated unless they move to a new library which
does it for them (which is equally unlikely)

[Bug 1319283] [NEW] unity screensaver lockup/crash

2014-05-14 Thread Anton Piatek
Public bug reported:

I have seen several instances where resuming from suspend results in a slightly
corrupted unity screensaver/lockscreen. Login is impossible.
Sometimes it crashes after a few minutes and restarts and all is ok. Other
times it crashes after a few minutes and simply unlocks the screen, though this
is often accompanies by no unity windowmanager running in the desktop

[Bug 1213035] Re: 8086:1502 [Lenovo ThinkPad W530] e1000e module sometimes prevents suspend to ram

2014-02-05 Thread Anton Piatek
Hi Christopher @penalvch, thanks for the update. Given the intermittent
nature of the bug (not every suspend is prevented from succeeding) it is
going to be incredibly difficult for me to reproduce on a livecd. Has
anything changed in this driver that makes you think it will be better
for me? It hasn't changed between raring and saucy.

Is there a possibility of trying only a newer kernel from trusty
perhaps, then I could use it for a week as normal and see if the issue
still presents itself?

Perhaps there is some debug output I could gather that might point to a
cause? This might help determine if undocking is involved as Tim
mentions

[Bug 962947] Re: CPU scaled back to very slow speed, cannot increase speed

2013-11-18 Thread Anton Piatek
I am now running saucy and the bug is still seen there
current policy: frequency should be within 600 MHz and 700 MHz.
The governor ondemand may decide which speed to use
  within this range.

I will try a mainline kernel when I get time, but all the other mainline
kernels I have tried in the past have this issue, and the upstream bug
nobody seems to care about fixing either, so im pretty sure it will
still be there.

[Bug 1213035] Re: e1000e module sometimes prevents suspend to ram

2013-08-23 Thread Anton Piatek
For reference I tried booting the latest mainline kernel, and apart from
screwing up unity (see bug 1215828) it suspended once, then failed to resume.
There was a reason I started using the nvidia driver, and that is because the
nouveau one fails to resume. So testing on that won't be possible.
I am expecting that a live cd will have a similar problem, so don't know if
testing it will be feasible.

[Bug 1213035] Re: e1000e module sometimes prevents suspend to ram

2013-08-23 Thread Anton Piatek
It is not possible to test this on the latest development image as the
nouveau driver does not resume (desktop completely locks up), and the
e1000e problem is intermittent, so a full reboot between tests is
infeasible.

Is there any debug info that I can gather to assist here? Any logs or
trace?

[Bug 1213035] Re: e1000e module sometimes prevents suspend to ram

2013-08-19 Thread Anton Piatek
Hi,
Unfortunately it doesn't look feasible for me to run with the mainline kernel
for long as I can't get the nvidia driver working in it:

information.

The problem I see with the e1000e driver is too infrequent for me to
test the kernel briefly, and without the nvidia drivers I cannot do my
dayjob on this laptop. If I can find a way to trigger the problem on
demand, then I am happy to attempt this again on a mainline kernel.

[Bug 974480] Re: Notification area whitelist is obsolete

2013-02-12 Thread Anton Piatek
Mark, I full appreciate your position and agree with direction, but you
need to understand that this change would push nearly all enterprise
users back to RedHat or even to things like Mint.

2009 is recent in enterprise terms, so spare a thought for those apps
which have yet to be revisited for ubuntu updates (let alone those
unlikely to have ubuntu-specific coding performed).

What is needed here is a cross-platform approach to allowing this sort
of notification, so that developers aren't coding systray for windows,
notification area for rhel, and new notifications for ubuntu. If you
aren't building that, then you are walling off developers that aren't
willing to spend time coding for a specific distribution, and you will
find most of those will walk away...

I realise that is a hard goal to achieve, but don't make the mistake of
forcing a new world without allowing the old to exist sensibly - Users
won't appreciate it either, and Unity is having enough problems with
rejection as it is already.

[Bug 1081135] [NEW] per-package changelogs for custom servers broken

2012-11-20 Thread Anton Piatek
Public bug reported:

Bug 45129 was raised in Lucid for custom changelogs in update manager. This
resolved this perfectly. However now in Precise it seems that update manager is
always looking for changelogs in the http path /pool/ which is incorrect on my
server as the apt url is /repo/, so the url should be /repo/pool/
Has something changed in the code which works out the custom changelog uri?

[Bug 1001127] Re: calendar widget displays wrong day and date

2012-05-30 Thread Anton Piatek
Interestingly, this morning I noticed that the widget is showing
yesterday's date, but uptime confirms my laptop was rebooted a week ago.
So the widget is updating the date, but seems to be lagging behind by a
day. The correct day in the month is highlighted in the calendar grid,
just the text date above the calendar is wrong (and if enabled in the
status bar, that date is correct)

The problem was happening every time I opened the menu. The computer was

The system date is correct and I dont think ntpdate is related.

I have rebooted the computer today and the correct date is showing. I
will see what happens tomorrow after I suspend it all night.

[Bug 962947] Re: CPU scaled back to very slow speed, cannot increase speed

2012-05-11 Thread Anton Piatek
The plot thickens...
I turned of the computer for a few minutes this morning (it is normally always
on), and when it came back up the CPU now shows a full speed range. Either it
is something that a cold start reset in the bios, or perhaps something related
to thermal protection trying to lock the max speed.
I had actually rebooted the box a few minutes before powering it off, and it
was still running with a scaled back cpu speed, so it really doesn't look like
it is related to the version of my kernel nor any packages.

[Bug 962947] Re: CPU scaled back to very slow speed, cannot increase speed

2012-04-26 Thread Anton Piatek
I have just attached 3 more acpi dumps.

It appears that after updating a large number of packages yesterday, all 4
kernels I have installed run at 700mhz today.
3.2.0-22
3.2.0-23
3.0.0
3.4.0 mainline
all run at 700mhz. I am not sure the kernel itself can be the problem here

Attached is my dpkg log, hopefully someone can help me find another
package which might influence the cpu scaling behaviour.

Additionally the whole window cannot be resized (horizontally) very small. I
suspect this is linked with the width of the panes in it not being able to go

Assuming I actually got the correct upstream kernel, it doesn't seem to
have solved the problem:

Let me know if there is another kernel you want me to try, or any other
info to gather. Note that I can't run this kernel generally as dkms
doesn't work so I don't get my nvidia modules.

[Bug 962102] Re: myunity reports unity is in 2d mode when it isn't

2012-03-23 Thread Anton Piatek
Ok, so I think it is something rather odd on my system. Rebooting
produces a similar result, but I do get and X crash (possibly in the
nvidia driver) and a unity crash on logging in. both recover and let me
continue, but I think it is dropping me down to a partial unity-2d
interface.

I have just disabled acpi with acpi=off on my grub options to work around
another issue where my cpu was stuck at 800mhz scaling. This time, I no longer
got crashes on login, and myunity now sees me as not being 2d.
ps also no longer shows any unity-2d processes.

[Bug 962947] [NEW] CPU scaled back to very slow speed, cannot increase speed

2012-03-23 Thread Anton Piatek
Public bug reported:

It appears that my 1.86GHz Intel Core2 CPU is only running at 700Mhz.
The attached files show (in /proc/cpu) that the cpu is actually a
1.86Ghz, but cpufreq only lets me set a maximum of 700mhz. I am running
precise amd64 on a 3.2.0-20-generic kernel, though the same was seen
linux-image-3.2.0-19-generic as well I believe.

The system is a Lenovo ThinkCentre 8810-91G, and the bios is the latest
one available. The bios doesn't show any cpu limiting options or
restrictions, and shows the cpus as the expected 1.86Mhz (though I think
that is just model information rather than the current clock speed). I
cannot see any overclocking options in the bios.

I can't recall if this was an issue on oneiric or not as I never looked
at the cpufreq before. It may or may not be a new issue.

I'm not entirely sure if this is a kernel bug or something else (like
ACPI), but am happy to try various other kernels to see if they help.

[Bug 962102] [NEW] myunity reports unity is in 2d mode when it isn't

2012-03-22 Thread Anton Piatek
Public bug reported:

Trying to use myunity to disable the seconds launcher bar on my second
screen, it pops up message saying that Unity is running in 2d mode, and
most options are greyed out.

I believe unity is in 3d mode because neither the user or system lightdm
config mentions 2d, and because of the following data I have tried to
gather:

Are you sure that is enough to determine it is 2d? Others on #ubuntu+1said that
they had unity-2d process running, and that the presence of the compiz
processes meant that it was running 3d:

[Bug 954824] [NEW] artist information pane is too large and cannot be sized smaller

2012-03-14 Thread Anton Piatek
Public bug reported:

The pane/window in rhythmbox which shows related artist information (see
attached screenshot, the pane is highlighted in pink/red) often resizes itself
to be too large. While the pane can be dragged left to make it larger, it often
isn't possible to drag the bar right to make it smaller.
Not sure what other helpful information I can give...
It isn't always too large, sometimes it is possible to resize it so that it is
quite small, but then on a later song it resizes itself (presumably to fit new
content) and becomes too large, and can't be made smaller again.

[Bug 45129] Re: FFe: update-manager should have per-package changelog locations (was: uses changelogs.ubuntu.com for all packages)

2011-12-14 Thread Anton Piatek
I use this for our corporate reprepro repository with several hundred packages
and find it very useful to be able to show our users what has changed in a
package before they install the updates.
reprepro does not extract the files itself, I do it manually as part of my
repository build code

aptitude full-upgrade and the icons have disappeared - xchat now uses the unity
launcher bar on the side to notify the user of something, rather than at the
top.
Empathy also appears to be properly now in the messaging status bar.

[Bug 839328] [NEW] some status icons disappear when moving the cursor to the top status bar

2011-09-02 Thread Anton Piatek
Public bug reported:

I have several status icons on the top bar, which disappear if I move my
cursor to the status bar and back out again. They then reappear if I
move the cursor back to the top and away again.

It does not seem to relate to the title of my application showing in the
top bar, nor the applications menus appearing in the top bar. Both of
these can show fine at the same time as the icons.

It really is strange, but if I move the mouse to the top and back down
they disappear, repeating this with the mouse makes the icons reappear.

The first icon in the attached screenshot, is an internal check tool we
use at my work. The second is xchat. The third is empathy.

I can interact with the icons if they are showing, but when they
disappear there are no actions available on the space where they were.

The versions of xchat and empathy are as follows
empathy 3.1.5-1ubuntu1
xchat2.8.8-3ubuntu6

[Bug 794291] Re: iwlagn driver update breaks compatibilty with firmware

2011-06-09 Thread Anton Piatek
Similar problem for me. After updating to the 2.6.32-33-generic-pae kernel my
intel wireless stopped working. dmesg shows:
[ 15.261265] iwlagn :03:00.0: firmware: requesting iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode

I tried this with both 1.34.7 and 1.34.10 of linux-firmware but it did
not help. Rebooting back into the older 2.6.32-32 kernel solved the
issue for me

 Hi all,

as we move into April the release of Ubuntu 11.04 the Natty Narwhal
swims into view. Because this will be a *huge* celebration we have
arranged a bank holiday on the following day for you, so there is no
excuse for not partying on a weekday. In the afternoon will be a
slightly formal launch event and photo opportunity for journalists and
bloggers and the community, at the British Computing Society on
Southampton Street near Charring Cross, dunno if there will be any nosh,
but if there is it would be of the diminutive sandwiches and canapés
variety. There is going to be a registration for this as we are going to
need names and numbers in advance. Following that we will be moving on
to somewhere else with less formality and more booze, probably a pub.

This part of the plan is less well defined than the first part so I am
*seeking* *your* *help*. What we need to do is pick a pub, or other
venue. One that serves food and has a decent amount of space, one that
will perhaps let us reserve an area for free, one within walking
distance of the BCS and within staggering distance of a tube. Power
sockets and wifi would be a mild bonus, but the evening is more about
 partying than geeking out.

Please respond with venue suggestions and feel free to start planning
what to do for the rest of your day off, I heard that some kids that
went to Edinburgh Uni are taking advantage of the Natty bank holiday to
get hitched in Westminster, but you could do anything you like.

 Alan.

The montagu pyke is reasonably large, well placed and I have known
groups to book a good portion of it for events.
