[Bug 1349478] Re: /usr/sbin/system-image-dbus:sqlite3.OperationalError:_check_for_update:emit_signal:UpdateAvailableStatus:__init__:__enter__:_cursor
This is very likely caused by the same issue as LP: #1301995 - specifically that the tests are being run as non-root, but they still try to write the settings.db file into /var/lib/system-image (which is only root:root writable). I don't believe this will affect any actual touch images, just Q/A. [Bug 1347958] [NEW] Minor inconsistency in d/tests/control format
Public bug reported: It's only a minor inconsistency, but I find it a little strange that items in the Tests: and Restrictions: headers are space separated, but items in the Depends: are comma separated. [Bug 1335568] Re: Updates keep coming in while writable image is set
This is basically a feature, not a bug. system-image-cli is a developer tool, as is writable mode. Developers are supposed to know what they're doing, so s-i-cli never changes its behavior based on writable mode and in fact never looks at /userdata/.writable_image. You would have to pass `--build 0` to force a full update. In IRC discussions, Sergio mentioned that it worked differently in Saucy, where if writable mode was set, no updates would happen via the system-settings ui. If that behavior's changed, then it's a ui bug. Note that system-image-dbus also does not look at /userdata/.writable_image and does not change behavior based on writable mode, however s-i-dbus is purely triggered through D-Bus activation, which typically is only invoked by the systems-setting ui. ** Changed in: ubuntu-system-image Status: New = Invalid ** Changed in: system-image (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1335568 Title: Updates keep coming in while writable image is set To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-system-image/+bug/1335568/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1323328] Re: [MIR] wheel, build dependency for packages providing -whl packages
Wheel packages (python-pkg-whl) are needed to support the pythonX.Y-venv package so that developers have access to the built-in virtual environment tool in a policy compliant way. The same technique will be necessary for python-virtualenv at some point. To build wheels, we need the python{,3}-wheel package promoted to main as a new build dependency. The package is already available in utopic universe, has no known security issues, runs its test suite during the build process, is standard compliant, and is team maintained in Debian. It has good upstream maintenance as well. ** Changed in: wheel (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1323328 Title: [MIR] wheel, build dependency for packages providing -whl packages To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wheel/+bug/1323328/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1245597] Re: Empty downloads should emit 'finished' signal immediately
I'm reopening this bug because there's still something strange going on here. I have the following code in systemimage/download.py just before I call .createDownloadGroup(): if len(downloads) == 0: # Nothing to download. See LP: #1245597. return I tried removing this since it ought to be unnecessary, but without this code, udm seems to stop sending signals no DBus. I get tons of TimeoutErrors without this code, and that only happens if no other `error`, `canceled`, or `finished` signal is received within 10 minutes. [Bug 1321795] [NEW] Add DEP-8 / autopkgtest integration tests for system-image
Public bug reported: LP: #1321481 requests adding DEP-8 integration tests to system-image that must pass in order for dependencies of s-i to land. I think it also makes sense to add integration tests to u-d-m's autopkgtests so that we can have a greater assurance against regressions. My first thought for both was to run the full system-image test suite. That might be overkill though, but a subset of tests could be crafted that will at least give a good smoke test of s-i and udm. I'm seeing this problem in system-image trunk tests. [Bug 1308714] Re: sudo pip install installs into the system dist-packages by default
After talking with Matthias, I think I understand the gist of this bug. Let's say I apt-get install python3.4 (well, a modified package that re- enables the ensurepip module). Now I use pyvenv-3.4 to create a virtual environment. With ensurepip enabled, venv/bin will contain pip, pip3, and pip3.4 executables. If you enter the venv (by sourcing bin/activate), those will do the right thing by installing into the venv. However, let's say you move those aside and apt-get install python3-pip. Now enter the venv and run pip3 install enum34. That package will get installed into /usr/lib/python3.4/site-packages! Not dist-packages, and not /usr/local. That seems bad, but I'm not sure how bad it will be in practice. If we re-enable ensurepip as in LP: #1290847 then first off, anybody entering the venv will use the venv/bin/pip script instead and that will work as expected. You'd have to actively manipulate your venv in a way that I don't think makes much sense, or if you do it, you know what your doing (or think you do :). If you don't run system pip3 as root, you just get the expected permission denied. There's still the possibility that you enter the venv, delete venv/bin/pip*, apt-get install python3-pip, and sudo pip3 install something. Yes, that will lead to broken stuff and you pretty much had to willfully want to break your system, but if that's really a problem, then python3-pip could be changed to refuse to run if sys.prefix != sys.base_prefix (i.e. you are in a virtual environment). That would force you to use the ensurepip installed pip* executables. But of course then we'd have to resolve the problems with ensurepip. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1308714 Title: sudo pip install installs into the system dist-packages by default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python-pip/+bug/1308714/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

After further discussion, I think we won't take this on as it's a big pile of work. I'm happy to consult with the upstream compiz folks if they want to explore options. What has been discussed is allowing unity7 autopilot tests to continue to depend on Python 2 python-compizconfig. Since unity7 isn't used on touch, this won't block our progress on the Python 3 migration there. We are likely going to split the autopilot source package during u-series, with an autopilot-legacy branch providing python-autopilot and friends (i.e. an unmaintained except for critical fixes, Python 2 support), with the trunk autopilot branch *only* providing Python 3 support. When unity7 is completely replaced by unity8 then everything will fall out naturally. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1310794 Title: python-compizconfig needs to be ported to python3 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1310794/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1290847] Re: pyvenv fails due to mising ensurepip module
Let's look at use cases. 1) User wants to pip install something into their ~/.local directory. Having python3-* packages installed does not give them pip3. They have to apt-get install python3-pip. If they try to `pip3 install foo` it will try to install it into the system dist-packages and this will fail with a permission denied. They must `pip3 install --user foo` and it will end up in their ~/.local/lib/pythonX.Y/site-packages directory, and it will be importable by the system Python. All of this works right out of the box today: % pip3 install --user nose2 [...] % python3.4 -c import nose2; print(nose2) module 'nose2' from '/home/barry/.local/lib/python3.4/site-packages/nose2/__init__.py' 2) User wants to pip install something into the system package path. Again they must install python3-pip, and this time they must use `sudo pip3 install foo`. foo gets installed into /usr/local/lib/python3.4 /dist-packages. All of this works right out of the box today: % sudo pip3 install nose2 [...] % python3.4 -c import nose2; print(nose2) module 'nose2' from '/usr/local/lib/python3.4/dist-packages/nose2/__init__.py' 3) Use creates a virtualenv and wants to install foo into the virtualenv. Regardless of whether --system-site-packages is used or not, and regardless of whether pyvenv-3.4 or virtualenv is used, the virtualenv should already contain `/my/venv/bin/pip` and the user should be able to enter the venv and run `pip install foo`. This should install foo into /my/venv/lib/pythonX.Y/site-packages and have it be importable. This latter is the use case that's currently broken with pyvenv-3.4 due to the disabling of ensurepip, so this is the use case we need to fix. System pip package shouldn't enter into the picture. The question we have to answer, IMHO, is whether we want ensurepip to use the recursively bundled pip (and its dependencies) or to rewheel system pip and dependencies (in which case we'd need to handle the circular apt dependencies from python3.4-python3-pip). I think the determining factor should be Debian policy w.r.t. build- from-source. Wheels are just zips so unzipping the two bundled wheels results in all the recursive source files contained within the wheels. But how are the wheels built to be included in the tarball? That recipe must be embodied in the Debian package so that the bundled wheels (with their own vendored libraries) can be completely reproduced from upstream source. If it's not possible to do that reproducibly, then we need an approach like rewheel. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1290847 Title: pyvenv fails due to mising ensurepip module To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python3-defaults/+bug/1290847/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1290847] Re: pyvenv fails due to mising ensurepip module
If I'm reading the rewheel code correctly, I think we are going to have to do something like the following: * Package up wheel for Debian (python-wheel, and python3-wheel). This gives us the setuptools bdist_wheel command. * At Python build-time we need *.dist-info/RECORD files for setuptools, pip, and recursively vendored packages. We do not currently generate these, and there's a bit of a bootstrapping problem. But let's say for the moment we can generate all these dist-info directories, we need to put them some place where the python3.4 debian/rules can find it *without* downloading anything from PyPI. My thought is that we bootstrap this by building setuptools-wheel, pip-wheel, etc binary packages which only contain the dist-info/ directories. We can then build-dep python3.4 on those *-wheel packages. * We need to package up rewheel too, both in PyPI and Debian. It'll take a little work to whip the code in shape, but it's not too bad I guess. I really don't like patching Python the way rewheel does it, so I'll look at alternatives. Hopefully bkadrda will accept pull requests. Anyway, that's a general plan, and the devil is in the details, but I think I see how it all hangs together.

[Bug 1004592] Re: Compiz fails to build ~ looks like finding python ver. doesn't work properly (Archlinux)
Hi. I've landed here because of LP: #1310794. In order to drop Python 2 from the Ubuntu touch image, we need to port all autopilot tests to Python 3. One of the current blockers is unity7, which uses the python- compizconfig package to access the Python level `compizconfig.Context` object. This is problematic because the compiz Python bindings are provided by a pyrex module, compizconfig.pyx. Pyrex itself is essentially dead upstream, the last release happening in 2011 afaict. It also doesn't support Python 3 afaict. So porting python-compizconfig to Python 3 is going to be a major PITA. I don't even know if it's worth it, if say unity7 is deprecated in 'U'. Let's say it *is* worth it, there are a few options. The Python bindings could be hand-coded, or we could use ctypes, but in both those cases, the entire module would have to be ported. Are there enough tests so that we know when we're done and have a high quality port? The other option is to try to port just what's needed for unity7's autopilot tests. That may be just as big a task though, depending on how much of the compizconfig API the tests require. As for Python 2/3 on Ubuntu, we would like Python 3 to be the default in the sense that all system scripts and services written in Python should be Python 3. However, we'll never change /usr/bin/python like Arch did. As inherited from Debian, /usr/bin/python will *always* be Python 2 (unless and until PEP 394 changes that recommendation, but don't hold your breath). /usr/bin/python3 is what you need to use, but as is pointed out, most distros will heed PEP 394 and provide a /usr/bin/python2 symlink too. Ubuntu and Debian do. Any guidance you can provide on helping us get enough of compizconfig exposed to Python 3 would be very helpful. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1004592 Title: Compiz fails to build ~ looks like finding python ver. doesn't work properly (Archlinux) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1004592/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1310663] [NEW] Text input fields lost Emacs bindings
Public bug reported: Before today's full upgrade to 14.04, all the text input fields in the chromium browser responded to the basic Emacs navigation keys, such as ctrl-a (beginning of line), ctrl-e (end of line), ctrl-n (next line), ctrl-p (previous-line), ctrl-f (forward character), and ctrl-b (backward character). The fields these key bindings worked in include the awesome bar (i.e. url/search text field), and both single and multiline text input fields inside web pages (such as this one). Now, none of these keybindings work this way anymore. This is a severe productivity regression. This is despite the following facts: % gconftool-2 --get /desktop/gnome/interface/gtk_key_theme Emacs % gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-key-theme 'Emacs' and the fact that the keybindings still work in Firefox and other applications. [Bug 1294119] Re: ubuntu-bug tab completion failure
Yep, I hit this one too. I vaguely recall this being previously reported and fixed, so it's probably a regression. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1294119 Title: ubuntu-bug tab completion failure To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/1294119/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
