Re: [ubuntu-in] Strange problem with too many jpg files in one folder

2010-08-25 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
Dear Ram,

I have regularly used testdisk to recover files from my laptop's mounted
hard drive. So thats not an issue.

I have used recoverjpg in the past as well, but it recovers files and
not folders ...and that I believe is the root of your problem. Not only
that, the recovered files also do not have their original names. This
becomes a problem when you are recovering a large number of files. I
switched to testdisk because I ran into problems just like yours. If the
hard drive is still available I would recommend using testdisk.
Initially I got stuck with testdisk because I kept hitting 'Enter' (the
default action) instead of using the 'P' button to list the files in the
partition. The deleted files are all lighted up red, and you can
actually choose the ones you want to recover. I suspect this little step
is preventing you from exploiting testdisk's capabilities.

However, if it is problem solving that you are looking at, then I guess
this is not the solution. Good luck!

[ubuntu-in] Strange problem with too many jpg files in one folder

2010-08-25 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
Dear Ram,

Am not sure about recoverjpg, but there is another way of recovering
your dlelted files and folders.

A better way to recover is to use testdisk. You can recover your folders
exactly as they were before being deleted. The essential difference
being that the folder structure is maintained and if you know what was
deleted and from which location testdisk is certainly easier and superior.

Re: [ubuntu-in] 32-bit version on a amd 64 system!

2009-08-27 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
Dear Bryan,

Thanks for the reply. I was not aware that this has been discussed on
this list before.

I admit that 64-bit systems are better than 32-bit systems. But
practically speaking this is not the case. Lack of graphical drivers
that are fully functional is a critical issue for an end-user. Maybe
64-bit systems are incomplete on their software side, but for an
end-user that's just a 64-bit pc. When you say 64-bit is the future, I
presume you say so because we are hitting the 4 GB limit. Otherwise
64-bit systems are lacking and thereby lagging behind 32-bit systems as
far as usage goes.

By the way, as I mentioned earlier I hit a roadblock trying to install
the x-86 version of jaunty on an amd 64 compaq laptop. I went ahead and
re-installed an amd-64 version of ubuntu jaunty and everything worked
out of the box.

[ubuntu-in] 32-bit version on a amd 64 system!

2009-08-24 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
Friends,

I was just wondering if it's possible to install a 32-bit version of
ubuntu 9.04 on an amd 64 system.

I thought it was not possible. But nevertheless since I carry a 32-bit
version on a pen drive, I attempted to do so on a friend's compaq
presario notebook. To my surprise, the whole process went smoothly. The
system booted in but there was no display. I tried installing the nvidia
drivers through envy but that didn't help as well.

I remember sometime back when I was installing ubuntu via cd's the
installation would warn about the mismatch. But this time around there
were no such error messages. Windows does permit installing 32-bit
versions on amd 64, don't they?

My question therefore is: Is the graphics display problem due to the
mismatch? In other words, is it possible to install a 32-bit ubuntu
version on an amd 64 platform? ( On a more general note, I would like
your opinion on the amd 64 platform. I know this is not the forum for
it, so you can refuse to answer this last bit. But I think there is a
role for discussions on a mailing list and not just query-answer sessions)

Re: [ubuntu-in] ubuntu-in Digest, Vol 41, Issue 10

2009-07-11 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
Thanks Sandeep for your reply!

I agree there must be something wrong with the motherboard. But I don't
understand why win xp comes to life while xubuntu comes to a halt in the
booting process? I use a USB wireless mouse and it seems to be working
fine with win xp (except that it doesn't charge devices, so it must be
partly dysfunctional). If a jumper setting is not right, like you
suggest, why is that not affecting the win xp boot process or for that
matter its functioning! The ethernet card's working fine as well. I
don't know if the graphics card(nvidia) is working or not for I haven't
hooked it up.

This is the first instance where xubuntu has failed and win xp has
worked well. I thought it was always the other way around!

It could be because hardware was made for MS products, and not
specifically for linux as this post
 seems to suggest. I
don't know! In the end I need my system to run x/ubuntu. I will look at
the jumper stuff on sunday and report back to you. Am not very familiar
with hardware so have to tread carefully there.

[ubuntu-in] Unable to boot into hard drive or using a live cd

2009-07-09 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
Dear Friends,

I have an old amd64 based desktop at home. Until sometime ago it was
working fine, dual booting ubuntu and win xp. The power unit failed and
I called a local computer guy to repair it. He took down the system, and
reported back saying that the power unit, gpu, usb ports and the
ethernet card were all konked out. When I pointed out that everything
cannot fail at the same time, he looked into the matter ...he took
almost a week with. When he returned the system, he ridiculed me for
having bought a 64 but system declaring that it was a big flop. He had
had wiped out the entire hard drive, installed win xp and said that the
cd drive was behaving funny. The usb ports are not working and the
ethernet card was failing as well. He had removed the nvidia graphics
card saying the system would not boot with it.

He left the system at home for me to tinker with. I found the system was
indeed behaving in a peculiar manner. The ethernet card was working
fine. But if the driver upgraded, then it would stoop working. I had to
unroll the driver. The USB ports were working fine but they would not
charge up, for example the creative zen or the ipod touch. The cd drive
would sometime not close or open, but was reading cd's just about fine.

But the most difficult problem was that it was refusing to boot into the
live xubuntu cd that I intended to install. When booting in the verbose
method, it would stop at the following lines:

After many attempts, I entered the BIOS screen and restored all
defaults. Suddenly the system booted into the live cd and I proceeded
with my installation. I thought if this was the problem, then I must be
able to reproduce it, so I made a few changes in the BIOS settings and
the system would halt during the boot process. So I reverted back to the
default settings in BIOS, but now the system refuses to boot either into
the hard drive or the live cd!

What do I do now? The system is completely inaccessible from the xubuntu
side. But all along, I can still boot into win xp.

Bios is ambios
processor is amd athlon xp
ram is 512 MB
hdd 200gb
motherboard - don't know
keyboard working
cdrom benq working
ethernet card via working
usb ports working partially - don't charge even when booted into win xp
ps2 mouse not working, if I plug it in, the keyboard stops responding,
so am using a remote usb optical mouse (cell something)

[ubuntu-in] Ubuntu, Dell inspiron and nVidia!

2009-05-30 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
Friends,

I know this is a little off-topic. Apologies for the same. Maybe the
subject should not include ubuntu any more.

I thought I would let people know that the dell guys replaced my
motherboard for free, and this is an initiative taken by both nividia
and dell for those who got defective nVidia GPU's. The reason I am
mentioning this on this forum is because often people jump to
conclusions. Why people, I for one thought it initially to be a ubuntu
driver problem, when it was not. So for those who have been having weird
screen related issues with random freezes and you have an nVidia card,
contact your respective parent company.

Good luck!

[ubuntu-in] Ubuntu, Dell inspiron and nVidia!

2009-05-26 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
Dear Friends,

As a follow up of my earlier posts, I have to admit that installing the
beta nVidia driver v185 did not work as well. The system went in for a
freeze. The system would boot up but I presume the x server would not
start up. Not possible to access the terminal as well. Powering the
system down was the only option available. Had to wait for about 10-15
Min before powering up my laptop. This time I went into recovery mode,
and dropped to a root shell. First thing I did was uninstall the nvidia
driver. Then back to the recovery console, I did the auto x-config.
After which I resumed normal boot. And the system was up again minus all
the fancy bells and whistles!

And the firs thing I am doing is writing in this mail to the list.

Now I have decided to return the laptop to Dell for overhauling the
nvidia graphics card, not immediately as it is functioning fine
otherwise and I have got some important work to finish.

Sounds like I am the only odd man out!!

[ubuntu-in] Ubuntu, Dell inspiron and nVidia!

2009-05-24 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
Dear Friends,

I have been using Ubuntu on my Dell Inspiron for more than a year with
fantastic results. It has been wonderful until a few days ago.

The screen started on a random freeze, freeze meaning nothing would
work. Initially I thought it was do with Compiz, and disabled it. But
the freezes continued. My dell came with an nVidia GPU, so I disabled
the existing driver v 180 and regressed to v 177. This worked for a
while and then the freeze again. So I disabled the graphics hardware
drivers altogether. This was the only way I could continue using the laptop.

Along the way, I discovered some interesting posts at dell direct forums
detailing in particular about the problems with some nvidia cards. This
was not specific to Dell but affected other laptops brands as well. The
good thing was Dell was extending warranty by a minimum of one year for
those with the failing nVidia GPU's.

Sorry about that lengthy background, but this is where my doubts arise.
There are a few salient observations I made:

1. Whenever a freeze happened, the laptop would not work even if I
booted into the vista partition which came pre-installed. The garbled
screen would show up. This strengthened my view that there was
something wrong with the nVidia hardware as mentioned in the dell forums.
2. However the peculiar thing was that whenever I disabled the nVidia
drivers (official versions 177 or 180 but unsupported). Ubuntu would
work and so would vista. This was in contradiction to point 1 and was in
favour of a problem with the nVidia drivers.
3. Whenever the freeze would occur, occasionally the dell bios boot up
screen would be in a mess. Does this not mean that the problem arose
even before the nvidia drivers came into action? I would have to boot up
several times to be able to disable the nvidia drivers from the system
settings.
Note: Its possible that I was using ubuntu all the time, and only
booting into vista to check out and therefore in terms of probability I
was more likely to come across the random freeze when booting into ubuntu.
4. Before I end the post I discovered that new beta v 185 official
nVidia drivers (official nvidia but unofficial ubuntu because they have
not made it to the ubuntu repositories as yet) were available. I
installed them and everything is running smooth(Keeping my fingers
crossed). Obviously, I need to wait for a few more days before I can say
everything is fine.

The thousand dollar question is: Is this a hardware or software related
issue? If it is hardware related I must get it replaced before time runs
out.
Secondly has anyone else with a dell laptop faced this problem.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Banshee

2008-10-10 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
Thanks Parthan and Onkar for your replies.

I had the banshee from the main repos installed already. I installed the
banshee-1 package from the ppa, so now I have two of them. I don't want
to remove the main banshee package, parthan as the songs are rated, and
banshee maintains a database of the songs. The new banshee-1 that I
installed also automatically created or used the already existing
database. My fear was that the ratings would disappear if I simply
installed the new version over the old one. Since I already installed
the banshee-1, I can confirm that this is true.

I don't suppose that will happen if I were to wait for the official
upgrade with the new distribution (sorry Onkar if i am assuming too
much). In other words, the softwares in the ppa repos are only for trial
purposes and not for final use!!

[ubuntu-in] Banshee

2008-10-09 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
Something I've been wanting to ask for a long time now.

I use Banshee on my gnome desktop, and I love it. The new banshee was
out some time back, that is version1.0 (the most recent though is 1.2
released a couple of day earlier.

I also did read somewhere that Intrepid is going to have this new
version. Since that is a good three weeks away I was wondering if I
could get it right away. There is a banshee-1 package available for
Hardy. All I nneded to do was to enable the launchapd ppa source to
download and install this version of banshee.

My questions:
1. If I install this banshee-1 package am I going to have two versions
of banshee?
2. When I upgrade to Intrepid, will the banshee that I install auto
upgrade to the new version?

[ubuntu-in] Acer 5052

2008-09-10 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
Ok guys,

Here are a few problems that I ran into trying to install Ubuntu Hardy
on an Acer 5052. Tried some help in the irc channel but failed to make
any progress.

Here goes:

System details: AMD Turion. x64 architecture. 512 ram. 120 GB HDD. ATI
graphics card. Has win xp on one partition and works well. Got infected
with several viruses. Attempted removal. Success. Infection again. Gto
fed up and wishes to try ubuntu linux.

Problem 1: Unable to connect to the internet. The net connection at my
workplace is thru airtel adsl modem thats distributed by a Lan router
(wired). one Pc on win xp and another laptop on win vista connect
successfully. My laptop with ubuntu hardy connects as well. But the acer
laptop doesn't. Tried dhcp, manual configuration but nothing works.
Attempted direct connection to the airtel modem but that doesn;t help as
well. THe ethernet card is realtek (RTL 8139).

Problem 2: acpi=off option to run the laptop or even install ubuntu. But
this means he is unable to shut off the system, it hangs. Am aware that
acer_acpi needs to be installed. But without net connection this is not
possible. However since the deb files can be downloaded from the
repositories. I was wondering if that would help restore acpi
functionality. The worry were the dependencies! acer_acpi has been
superseded with acer_wmi in ibex but thats good two months away.

Sorry about being so verbose, but in my case the quiet=off most of the
time! Help needed, critical to get his system going otherwise he is
likely to fall back on win xp!!

Cheers,

[ubuntu-in] Dell and Ubuntu!

2008-09-04 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
It is futile to argue about something that is out in the open. I admit
that dell is offering support for ubuntu hardy but in those early days,
there was no support available for gutsy. Anyways no point in talking
about the past. Even now, the dell linux wiki comes with a disclaimer
about no technical support being available.

Last but not the least, my dear Onkar, I am running ubuntu hardy on a
Dell Inspiron 1420. And maybe thats one of the reasons why I fell for a
Dell.

My objection is to the fact that all laptop users are being forced to
buy windows vista, and that I think is a major impedance to widespread
adoption of ubuntu, and linux. I went with Dell because they had the
courage to go against the norm.

[ubuntu-in] Dell and Ubuntu!

2008-09-03 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
@Onkar: Well, my point was that Vostro is listed under the buisness
category alongwith XPS, Latitude and Precison while Inspiron/XPS under
the home( Home/Home & Office, rather - whatever that means) category in
the Dell website. If Dell is going to offer Vostro laptops with ubuntu
pre loaded I will be very happy compared to all those blissfully unaware
around me. Unfortunately even as I write the laptop in question (Vostro
A series )is mentioned but cannot be configured, and so I assume cannot
be ordered. Also the fact that it will be unsupported will not find many
takers, especially in India. SaaS is a new concept, and it will be some
time before people here adapt to it. But I completely agree that ubuntu
is a wonderful OS and I use nothing but ubuntu at home and in the
hospital.

@List: But to shift the focus a little away, here is something
intresting that i read:

But the Inspiron and XPS ranges are not. The vostro range is designed to

of now! I would think they are more into making their presence felt,
brand promotion and so on. I think that the launch of MID's holds
greater promise in the growth of ubuntu in India. Dell and others may
capitalise at that moment, but not for now.

[ubuntu-in] Dell and ubuntu!

2008-08-31 Thread Biswajit Dutta Baruah
Friends,

Hope this is not too late to chip in.

I have an Inspiron 1420 that i bought in Dec 2007. Have been running
ubuntu on the same. Had a few issues with sound and video in gutsy but
hardy is fine ...no issues at all. Not crashed even once and am using it
full time. Have vista on a partition but haven't been there for a long
time now.

I've installed ubuntu on XPS as well for a few friends and it has worked
well.

Dell India is not selling any laptops with ubuntu pre loaded. Don't even
ask the guys, they don't have any clue about what ubuntu is. I tried
hard for them to sell me one without vista so that I don't have to pay
for the vista. But they refused, however i got a 5000 discount after
some hard bargaining.

At that time Dell was selling laptops online only but now they are in
the shops. And introductory offers are usually with a discount, so go
for it. If you buy online, they will come from Sriperumbudur(near
chennai) and not Malaysia, like mine did.

If you are getting one from the US be sure to buy a global warranty so
that in case of needing service you can have it done locally and not
send it back to the US. I can have mine serviced in the Asia_pacific
region and not elsewhere, but that suit me well and I'm happy.

Dear Onkar,

I did try out after your mail and indeed its possible to print pdf from
the desk top itself without resorting to conversion over the net. I
apologise for any confusion I may have caused.

However I did face some problem, and I thought you may be the best
person to resolve it.

I often book tickets at ksrtc.in. When I attempt to print tickets
therein, a dialogue box opens displaying the various options available.
If I choose pdf, the dialogue box closes and I do not seen any pdf file
being generated. Or maybe I do not know the location. I did not find any
option to choose the location or name of the file. I also searched my
home folder as well, but could not find it there. However if I choose
the print to file option, I get the option to choose pdf vs ps, the name
of the file and its location. This option was not available earlier.(The
file printed was a ps file and I pretty sure about that).

But anyway, my question is, what am I doing wrong in the pdf printer or
what do I need to do install / modify to get it working??

Gaurish and Nilesh,

This may not actually work. The PDF file may open with evince or kpdf
but will certainly not open with a adobe reader. The reason I think is
because it is actually a ps(postscript) file rather than a pdf file,
even though it is labelled a pdf. I would suggest the following:

1. Hit print button after your online booking
2. In the print dialogue box chose print to file and choose your file
name and location.
3. Then visit a site like http://ps2pdf.com/convert.htm
Upload your pdf file, hit convert and then wait for a few seconds and
download the pdf file from the link.
4. Now you can print the pdf file from any windows pc that has adobe
acrobat or any other pdf reader installed at office or elsewhere.
