[ubuntu-tr] [Back In Time] Update translations before upcoming release

2024-07-08 Thread c . buhtz

Hello together,

I'm member of the maintenance team of Back In Time [1] a rsync-based
backup software.

We are in the middle of preparing the next release to hit the upcoming
Ubuntu release in time.
It would be great if you could help that project and offer French
translations or review them [2] (currently at 94%).

In the project, no one gets payed. No company behind hit. Even the
maintainers and developers are volunteers.

Please let me know if and how you want to be mentioned in the credits as
a translator.
It is up to you if you want to use your real name, your email or
something else.
We do have a file [3] listing translators contribution. That names will
be used in the about dialog for example.

Thanks in advance and best wishes,
Christian Buhtz

"Estonian" removal from "Back In Time"

2024-07-02 Thread c . buhtz

Hello together,

I am sad to announce that I have to remove the language "Estonian" [1]
from the "Back In Time" project [2][3] in the coming weeks.

Despite my continuous efforts to attract translators in relevant
communities, there has been no progress since I took over the
translation subproject about 2 years ago. The translation progress for
this language remains stuck at 31% (of ~370 strings).

I'm member of the maintenance team of "Back In Time" a rsync-based
backup software. No one gets payed. No company behind hit. Even the
maintainers and developers are volunteers.

If one of you want to jump in, please let me know if and how you want to
be mentioned in the credits as a translator. It is up to you if you want
to use your real name, your email or something else. We do have an extra
file [4] listing contributions to the translation. The content of that
file will be used in the about dialog for example.

We appreciate your help. Don't hesitate to ask.

Christian Buhtz on behalf of the The Back In Time team

Re: Help with a debdiff for tigervnc

If all that's necessary is to rebuild tigervnc against a properly patched
xorg-xserver-source, this shouldn't be too tricky. The versions of
xorg-xserver with the patch fixed can be seen at
https://ubuntu.com/security/notices/USN-5986-1. All that would then be
necessary is to bump the dependency to require a version of
xorg-xserver-source greater than or equal to the corresponding version in
each stable release, and bump the dependency to require the newest available
version of xorg-server-source or greater in the development release.

The tricky part here is following the whole Stable Release Updates process
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates), which takes at least a week
(probably more like a week and a couple of days) and requires lot of effort
and testing to make work. If you're interested in helping to fix this
hands-on, I'd be happy to assist, but stable release updates are one of the
harder parts of Ubuntu development. If you'd prefer, I'd also be happy to
just take this bug and work on getting it fixed.

Could you take it please ? I don't have any Ubuntu developer rights.

What is the best way to watch or see what you have done ?

Thanks,

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] ubuntu-studio-users Digest, Vol 188, Issue 3

2023-04-14 Thread Doc C
I have the same reaction.

KDE is pretty and all, but one (really annoying!!) bug on my AMD
Ryzen7/Radeon based desktop is the splash screen gets "stuck" and won't let
me get to my desktop. This happens about half the time when I reboot,
anecdotally.

Sometimes the window manager just becomes unresponsive (seems to be related
to the Slack desktop app in my case) and integration with LibreOffice is
not great.

Anyway, sorry to gripe but I too miss Xfce for UbuntuStudio. I understand
there are advantages and there is much more active development of KDE but I
spend a lot of time shutting off all the fancy stuff in KDE so it doesn't
annoy me.

Thanks for listening. ;-)

How to ask for introducing a new package into main?

2023-01-19 Thread c . buhtz

Hello,

I checked the wiki and docu but couldn't find that process described
somewhere.

Is there a ticket system where I can open a wishlist-bug or something
else to ask for introducing a new package into the "main" repository?

"universe", launchpad or privat ppa are not an option because the
package is still there.

Sim, algumas opções:

OpenJDK -- algumas versões diferentes estão disponíveis (Ubuntu
22.04): 8, 11, 17, 18, 19, and 20). Normalmente instalam-se via 'sudo
apt install openjdk--jdk', onde '' indica qual versão

"free"). IBM também tem ofertas para Java.

[Bug 1828107] Re: gvfs can't list shares from smb servers that disabled SMB1

2022-10-13 Thread C. Jeffery Small
Xubuntu 22.04.1 after upgrading from 20.04

In order to get multiple Windows 10 systems to "discover" the samba
shares on two different Xubuntu systems, I had to re-enable SMB1
protocol on all the Windows systems. Microsoft apparently keeps
disabling this on system updates.

As reported above, old Windows mapped drive assignments made to Ubuntu
samba shares have continued to work over time, but new shares cannot be
seen unless SMB1 is enabled. of course, this should all just work using
newer secure protocols.

For a significant piece of server software, the fact that this hasn't
been addressed long ago is a real mystery.

Esta é uma pergunta genérica demais. Se o sistema está a apresentar
contenção no uso de memória...
* instale sysstat (se não instalado), e habilite-o; espere algumas
horas (idealmente, alguns dias) e olhe
os ficheiros em /var/log/sysstat/sar* -- estes terão o relatório
sobre o dia anterior. Use 'man sar' para
* leia https://docs.kernel.org/admin-guide/mm/index.html -- isto
explicará (talvez confusamente) como
  o kernel usa memória
Mas, sem mais detalhes, não me é possível responder mais correctamente
esta pergunta.

Cheers,

Dear Athos,

thanks for explaining.

Why does Ubuntu use Launchpad in that case? Why this step between? Why
not using the sources directly from ubstream?

And one sidequestion: Why does debian build its own package for
backintime? It is in Debian? Why not use the Debian package? Isn't
Ubuntu "based on Debian"?

Re: backintime: Where are the sources from?

2022-08-26 Thread c . buhtz

Dear "Little Girl",

thank you for your reply. But sorry, my question wasn't clear enough.

I wasn't looking for upstream maintainers or the upstream repo.

What I want to know is how can I be sure where the ubuntu package got
its sources from. I assume it isn't upstream everytime!

For example backintime: Upstream is at GitHub. But there are also
sources on Launchpad. That is what confuses me.

So I want to know on which sources the ubuntu package is based on.

backintime: Where are the sources from?

2022-08-25 Thread c . buhtz

Hello,

as a (becoming) upstream maintainer try to better understand the logic
behind packaging in Ubuntu.

I learned that distros like Debian, Manjar, Arch, etc taking the source
for a package directly from upstream.

Let's take the universe package "backintime". Where do you get the
sources? Or better asked: How can I know myself?
Do you take them from ubstream (the github repo itself) or do you take
the source package from the Debian archive? Or I also found deb-files on
launchpad. Maybe the latter is just für 3rd-party PPA and
official/community Ubuntu?

So I am a bit confused here.

Thanks in advance
Christian Buhtz

[Bug 1974254] Re: Probles with Clutter

2022-05-22 Thread C. Jeffery Small
Tim, I followed your advice and yes, that fixed most of the problems I
was having. Apparently there was a system update that required a
reboot, but there was an error and it just said all updates applied.
This has occurred on the past couple of updates that didn't have too
many changes, but something clearly got screwed up. I should have done
this reboot myself, but I've become too comfortable believing the
package manager. I won't make that mistake again. So that appears to
resolve the issue. Thanks to you and Erich for your feedback.

[Bug 1974254] Re: Probles with Clutter

2022-05-21 Thread C. Jeffery Small
???

Can you be more specific. I am fully patched on 20.04.4 and I still get
the same error reports from geeqie and cheese. Both worked until very
recently and neither package was updated in quite some time.

The developer of geeqie reported that he saw the same problem. Then he
didn't! I am also finding a lot of other stable applications have
stopped working such as openshot and kdenlive video editors, although
these are Qt apps. Possibly there is a deeper underlying problem.

[Bug 1975384] [NEW] openshot has started crashing

2022-05-21 Thread C. Jeffery Small
Public bug reported:

Xubuntu 20.04.4

As of about a week ago, many programs have stopped working. I believe
there was a buggy update that is responsible, although I cannot pinpoint
it specifically.

Clutter-gtk seems to have been changed (eliminated ??) which has
affected many programs. See my report here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1974254

Today I tried to start Openshot, which I have used withing the past two
weeks, and I get the following results. This is a qt app, so it must be
related to something else.

[Bug 1974254] [NEW] Probles with Clutter

2022-05-19 Thread C. Jeffery Small
Public bug reported:

Running Xubuntu 20.04.4

I've started seeing all sorts of programs failing in the last week
apparently due to clutter. This includes Geeqie and Cheese, and
possibly Zoom, although I haven't tracked down the problem there. For
example, when I try to start geeqie, I get:

Can't initialize clutter-gtk.
Start geeqie with the option: --disable-clutter

When I try to run cheese I get:

(cheese:1207183): Clutter-CRITICAL **: 17:54:24.432: Unable to
initialize Clutter: Unable to initialize the Clutter backend: no
available drivers found.

** (cheese:1207183): ERROR **: 17:54:24.432: cheese-application.vala:89: Unable
to initialize libcheese-gtk
Trace/BPT trap(coredump)

In researching the problem I ran across this article:

https://blogs.gnome.org/clutter/

Now, I have no idea what clutter is/does, but it seems to now be
retired. Was the package removal back-ported to earlier releases of
Ubuntu? The gir1.2-gtkclutter-1.0, gir1-clutter-1.0 and
gstreamer1.0-clutter-3.0 packages are still installed.

Any guidelines here? Thanks.

Whatever the solution, it should be generalized to any $HOME location.

[Bug 1962541] Re: PEAP wifi can't connect (ubuntu live/installer is also not working

2022-05-16 Thread Robert C Jennings
Promotion from -proposed sure would be nice. I see verification has
been done but a update excuses shows an netplan.io regression[1]. I'm
not sure if the test is flaky but I see that seb retried it a few
times[2] last week and it failed consistently, so maybe not.

I'm just curious if there's any status on the test failure.

(Also, I started writing this thinking it had been a month but it's been
less than a week and I can't tell time. I know it wouldn't be promoted
with less than a week in -proposed anyway.)

[Bug 1900347] Current status

2022-04-06 Thread Larry C.
Dear Mr. Bacher,

I am a linux novice. You responded to a bug report I made in Oct
20, 2020. On February 26, 2021 there was a updated report posted here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/seahorse/+bug/1900347

So has this bug been fixed? If so were would the fixed package be? If
not when and how do bugs like this get resolved?

Thanks,

Larry C.

[Bug 1967702] [NEW] Accessibility features have been disabled, modules like speakup_soft and others are missing

2022-04-03 Thread Tiago M. C.
Public bug reported:

From very old versions of Kernel for Ubuntu until version 5.13, accessibility
features were enabled, allowing blind users to use screen readers in text mode,
such as "speakup" via "espeakup" package.
In Kernels 5.15 packages for Ubuntu 22.04 beta, such as
"linux-image-5.15.0-23-generic", accessibility features are disabled (no
justification for such occurrence was listed in the file
"changelog.Debian.gz"), with this the espeakup application doesn't work, it
depends on the missing speakup_soft module.
Missing in the file "/boot/config-5.15.0-23-generic" comparing with the file
"/boot/config-5.13.0-39-generic", the line
CONFIG_ACCESSIBILITY=y
and the following lines are also missing:

Re: [Bug 1964554] Re: Brasero does not burn ISO IMAGE. Error message; "SCSI error on write(0,16): See MMC specs: Sense Key 5 "Illegal request"

2022-03-26 Thread C. Clear
Hi Thomas;

Hope you are well and life is being kind.

Forgive the late reply but have been busy with work. So at this point I
have tried these Burn Programs

Brasero
Imgburn
K3b
Brasero

All give back a similar message. I am going to on Boot try a earlier
version of Ubuntu or maybe Safe mode to see if that would be a solution. It
is really difficult to tell wether this is a OS or Hardware issue.

Thank you very much for trying to assist me. Best Regards

Ollo;

sorry to take so long to get back to you but I have ran the cd-r test.

*Do you experience the problem with CD-R or CD-RW media ?*

Yes. The exact same error message as when I tried to make a DVD.

*Does it help to blank the CD medium before using it with Brasero:
xorriso -outdev /dev/sr0 -blank as_needed*

Unfortunately No. Tried twice and the same error Message.

Did the Power off/on Cycle and that also had no effect.

Thanks for your help and hoping that some solution comes up.

[Bug 1918375] Re: Obscure Window Manager Problem [Enhancement]

2022-03-15 Thread C. Jeffery Small
Not getting much attention here! :-)

Here is some additional information that might be useful. I was having
problems with new windows being created and hidden underneath existing
windows. In a forum discussion it was suggested to turn off (uncheck)
the "Activate focus stealing prevention" on the "Window Manager
Tweaks->Focus" tab. This indeed was the problem and once unchecked, new
windows were consistently created on the top of the stack. However,
this does not address the problem of moving a window that is lower or at
the bottom of the window stack to another workspace using keyboard
shortcuts. The moving window may still disappear beneath other windows
higher in the stack.

I have "Raise window when clicking inside application window" set so any
attempt to drag a window with the mouse forces it to the top of the
stack. My suggestion is that if the user has this option set, that it
then also imply that any window movement initiated by a keyboard
shortcut also causes the window to be raised so that it will float above
all other windows as the virtual desktops (workspaces) change.
Unchecking this option would leave the keyboard shortcut action as is.

Of course, it would be clearer for everyone involved if this raise-on-
window-movement option was given it's own option in the Window Manager
or the Window Manager Tweaks menu.

Thanks for getting back to me. So a question to ask

*Brasero's bad read attempt spoiled the two ASUS drives until they got a
power-off-on cycle. If the drive is built into the computer this means a
power-off-on cycle of the computer, i fear*

What does doing a power off/on cycle entail ??? Disconnecting the Drive and
computer from power and replugging it in or something more complex ??

Hi Thomas;

Thank you very much for getting back to me. So will try to answer your
questions. Some of which may be delayed due to me having to run test.

*- What is the vendor, model, revision of your drive. You may obtain it
from the empty drive by*

xorriso : NOTE : Disc status unsuitable for writing
Drive current: -outdev '/dev/sr0'
Media current: is not recognizable
Media status : is not present
Drive type : vendor 'ASUS' product 'BW-16D1HT' revision '3.10'

*- Do you experience the problem with CD-R or CD-RW media ? If so:*

* - What happens if you use a writable DVD medium instead ?*

* - Does it help to blank the CD medium before using it with Brasero:*
*   xorriso -outdev /dev/sr0 -blank as_needed*

Will Run these test shortly and get back to you with the results

*- Do you experience the problem with other GUI programs like K3B or
Xfburn ? - Do you experience the problem with a run of xorriso ?
ISO="...path.to.your.iso.image.file..." xorriso -as cdrecord -v
dev=/dev/sr0 blank=as_needed "$ISO"*

Have not tried K3B or Xfburn. Did try Nero for Linux and had the same
result as I did with Brasero.

Thank you very much for the assistance. Talk shortly.

[Bug 1962018] [NEW] pypy3compile errors during postinst confuses user

2022-02-23 Thread Robert C Jennings
Public bug reported:

Could you add some clarifying output in the postinst around pypy3compile
failures to give context to an end user? The errors as they stand don't
indicate that this is pyp3 specific and can be concerning (they also
give the impression that QA isn't catching basic python bugs which isn't
the case).

pypy3 support was added to dh-python3 towards the end of 2018 as "WIP"
such that postinst will call `pypy3compile $PACKAGE || true` to ignore
errors if pypy3 is installed. I was talking with a user that saw this
fail when installing an update for python3-software-properties and the
error message was cause for concern and confusion, for that package it
looked like this:

Setting up python3-software-properties (0.99.19) ...
Failed to byte-compile
/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/softwareproperties/extendedsourceslist.py:
File
"/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/softwareproperties/extendedsourceslist.py",
line 436
def __init__(self, sourceslist=None, /, files=None):
 ^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax (expected ')')

That's all fine, the author has introduced the positional-only parameter
(PEP570) new to python 3.8 and that's supported in cpython shipped by
default in the distro, but it isn't supported by pypy3. I think it's
reasonable for the maintainer of a package to decide that they want to
use new features and that they might not have testing with pypy3
installed as a requirement.

The fact that the failure is pypy3compile and not python3compile isn't
communicated for the failure nor that it's optional. The user might
think that the package is broken for the default interpreter.

Would you consider adding a message before each compilation step to call
out which interpreter is byte-compiling the module as well as pypy3
being optional/best-effort and may fail? Preferably you might also
indicate the impact (i.e. the package is usable with the system python3
interpreter but pypy3) to set expectations with the end user. Thank
you Piotr!

[Bug 1959445] [NEW] DHCPD gets confused about what IPs should be handed out on what interfaces

2022-01-28 Thread Daniel C
Public bug reported:

I had a device request an IP on one VLAN (one interface associated with
the server -- ens256), and then I moved the device to a different VLAN
(interface ens192 on the server), and was surprised when the DHCPD
process continued to hand out the same IP on the new VLAN.

Here are the associated syslog entries, and the IP interface settings:

Jan 28 12:06:35 backup dhcpd[1020678]: DHCPREQUEST for 10.2.195.100 from
ec:02:73:b8:4d:01 via ens256

Jan 28 12:11:23 backup dhcpd[1024746]: DHCPREQUEST for 10.2.195.100 from

ec:02:73:b8:4d:01 via ens192

(I've trimmed out the IPv6 information):
backup$ ip addr list
...
3: ens192: mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP group
default qlen 1000
link/ether 00:50:56:9e:8b:d8 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet 10.7.32.2/21 brd 10.7.39.255 scope global ens192
   valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
...
5: ens256: mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP group
default qlen 1000
link/ether 00:50:56:9e:f2:e6 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet 10.2.195.2/24 brd 10.2.195.255 scope global ens256
   valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
...

When I rebooted the client, it went back to DHCPDISCOVER mode and then
the DHCPD daemon correctly recognized that this client was on a new
interface/VLAN and handed it a valid IP address for that interface/VLAN.

[ubuntu-studio-users] Issues w/ThinkPad T14 AMD (Gen2)

2021-12-05 Thread Doc C
Greetings Fellow Ubuntu-studio fans.

I just got a ThinkPad T14 (Gen 2) and have had nothing but problems trying
to install 21.10.
I finally gave up installing from the ubuntstudio 21.10 image and chose to
install Kubuntu 2.10 and then use Ubuntu Studio Installer.

I've been waiting about an hour for the installer to finish with:
"Building initial module for 5.13.0-22-generic"

Any idea how long this would normally take on a Ryzen 7 at 1.90 Gigahertz?
It seems like it's stuck but I don't want to kill it prematurely.

Best,

Chris

[Bug 1579268] Re: Mouse cursor is different inside graphical windows of snaps (snaps not using system theme)

2021-09-29 Thread Velan C
This issue is still present in Telegram Desktop (snap package) in Ubuntu 20.04
LTS (Focal Fossa).
Not sure if this is with everyone.. but, the mouse pointer is a black hand,
when pointed in the list of groups area & a black arrow, when pointed in the
messaging area.

(Personal opinion: I believe it is these kind of petty things (ex.
(esp.) LibreOffice imperfections/inconsistencies) why Windows users
(desktop) are reluctant to switch to Linux. And, how & why MS managed to
build a distro on its own)

I disagree. "Open containing folder" is common terminology and makes it
clear that you are opening the folder that contains the bookmark you are
examining. This is how Chrome does it. I also use a fabulous file
manager called Directory Opus that uses the same terminology.

[Bug 1942690] [NEW] Postfixadmin does not include the "INSTALL.TXT".

2021-09-04 Thread Christopher C. Petro
Public bug reported:

When you install postfixadmin there is a README.Debian file that contains:
-
Where to get help
=
The first stop would be the Postfixadmin Website, Forum or IRC channel.

See :
 - #postfixadmin on irc.freenode.net
-

The first line redirects to a https://postfixadmin.sourceforge.io/, which then
says:
-
Installation

Please follow INSTALL.TXT (shipped with PostfixAdmin).
-

This file is nowhere to be found in the /usr/share/doc/postfixadmin
directory:

root@mailserver:/usr/share/doc/postfixadmin# find ./ | grep -i install.txt
root@mailserver:/usr/share/doc/postfixadmin#

Description:Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS

[Bug 1942689] [NEW] template_c directory not created or not pointing to the right place.

2021-09-04 Thread Christopher C. Petro
Public bug reported:

When installing postfixadmin from scratch you get an error:

ERROR: the templates_c directory doesn't exist or isn't writeable for
the webserver

This is because there's a bug in smarty.inc.php:

// if it's not present or writeable, smarty should just not cache.
$templates_c = dirname(__FILE__) . '/../templates_c';
if (is_dir($templates_c) && is_writeable($templates_c)) {
  <...>
  die("ERROR: the templates_c directory doesn't exist or isn't
writeable for the webserver");
}

Where the location of templates_c is (a) hard-coded and (b) hard-coded
to a questionable (and relative) location.

The manual fix for this is to create the directory and chown it to www-
data:www-data.

[Bug 1859526] Re: xfwm4 crashing after Xubuntu 19.10 upgrade

2021-09-02 Thread C. Jeffery Small
Yes, after 18.04, it was no longer possible to run two independent
desktop sessions, even if you have a single GPU supporting multiple
screens. It boggles my mind why this incredibly useful capability was
allowed to just die. You can still gang the two screens together with
the panel running on one screen and the window manager running across
both, but you cannot control them independently; i.e., if you switch
desktops both screens change rather than just the one you would like.

[Bug 1940723] Re: shim-signed fails to install if grub disk config is incorrect

2021-08-27 Thread Jason C. McDonald
Are you using packer or anything else to modify the image? How are you
modifying the disk layout?

I'll double check against some of the provided VM sizes, but I don't
think this is a problem with the image. It's likely a configuration
issue...which is *not* to say it's not a bug.

[Bug 1939950] Re: shim-signed fails to upgrade when NVMe drive is moved into the VM as Virtio drive

2021-08-26 Thread Jason C. McDonald
I don't believe this is a duplicate. shim-signed was looking for the
NVMe storage that was removed and inaccessible. Bug #1940723 has a
similar mechanism of failure, but is related to cloud instances, rather
than a missing device.

Hi @abaelter, I'm from the Canonical Public Cloud team. I'll be looking
into this further.

Can you tell me what Azure VM size(s) you've observed this occurring on?

[Bug 1672139]

2021-08-20 Thread Eberger-c
I am so glad to hear this is now being worked. Thank you.

As for a name, how about the term Chrome uses when you right click a URL
bookmark in your library, which is "Show in Folder." I am not sure how
you wish to implement, but if you just open Chrome I think it does it
well. I'm not as happy with their bookmarks mgr as with the FFox
Library, but the "show in folder" feature works nicely. When you click
it, you just move to the folder containing the bookmark in question.
The folder is highlighted in the folder tree and all bookmarks in the
highlighted folder, including the one you are interested in, are shown.
Check it out. I would vote for that for Ffox.

[Bug 1925954] Re: ERROR 8192: implode(): Passing glue string after array is deprecated. Swap the parameters at [/usr/share/libphutil/src/utils/utils.php:1572

2021-08-16 Thread Jason C. McDonald
@sylvestre This is a one-line fix that all my interns at MousePaw Media
(where we use Arcanist daily) perform manually after installing. With
Phacility winding down — don't worry, a community fork *is* spinning up
— this is not likely to be fixed upstream of here. I think it'd be worth
doing the one-line change here and opening the SRUs.

[Bug 1940136] [NEW] HyperV images do not include package manifests

2021-08-16 Thread Jason C. McDonald
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

 * There are currently no manifests being produced for buildd tarballs
in Hirsute, Focal, or Bionic.

 * Manifests _are_ being produced for the buildd tarballs in Impish.

[Test Plan]

 * build the hyperv subproject

 * verify that the '*-desktop-hyperv.vhdx.zip' and '*-desktop-
hyperv.vhdx.zip.manifest' artifacts are produced

 * verify that the packages listed in the manifests reflect the
respective contents of each image

[Where problems could occur]

 * There may be edge case where any automation not expecting this
.manifest file may experience problems. (I find this unlikely, and the
CPC processes do not have this issue.)

[Other info]

* This change involves a single line. Because the changelog modification
was in the same commit, this line will probably need to be backported
manually.

I also noticed problems with omshell after upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04,
and after finding this bug report I can confirm that compiling the ISC
sources (w/o the Ubuntu/Debian patches) does resolve the problem(s)
reported here.
