[Bug 674293] Re: VMware Kernel Panic Unable to mount root fs after Kernel Upgrade

2011-01-13 Thread Chris Eagan
I don't need this issue to be fixed since I have already performed a new
install in a new VM. I still have the broken VM if there is anyone
interested in determining what exactly went wrong. The VM is an
installation of ubuntu server edition so there is no UI.

[Bug 674293] Re: VMware Kernel Panic Unable to mount root fs after Kernel Upgrade

2010-11-12 Thread Chris Eagan
I have done some more testing and after downgrading the kernel to
2.6.32-24-server #43 and everything works fine. Of course, this means I
don't have any of the security patches since that kernel release. I'm
going to try this with a clean new VIrtual Machine install. I'm also
going to test Ubuntu Server 10.10.

[Bug 674293] [NEW] VMware Kernel Panic Unable to mount root fs after Kernel Upgrade

2010-11-11 Thread Chris Eagan
Public bug reported:

I have a VMWare Virtual Machine running Lucid and after a Kernel update
from

Linux 2.6.32-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 17 20:05:27 UTC 2010
x86_64 GNU/Linux

to

Linux squeeze 2.6.32-25-server #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:06:58 UTC
2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

the system no longer boots. The output on the screen is

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-
block (0,0)

The system's root partition is /dev/mapper/ubuntu-root, but the boot
process says that doesn't exist. It prints out a list of valid
partitions, but the list is empty.

[Bug 364204] Re: Brasero won't burn a BD-RE disc after erasing

2009-04-28 Thread Chris Eagan
It appears that erasing the disc might not have happened correctly. In
my dmesg output, I see the following whenever I insert the disc.

 [680380.973852] UDF-fs INFO UDF: Mounting volume 'BACKUP_032309',
timestamp 2009/03/23 14:16 (1f10)

It turns out that even after erasing the disc, the disc is mounted by
the root user each time the disc is inserted. I can't access it as a
normal user because the user and group of each file on the disc is
'4294967295' and folders do not have execute permissions.

The drive was reported as not even being recognized by me in Bug #104874
and I would like to close that bug, but I feel like I can't close it
until the disc is readable, writable, erasable, and re-writable.

[Bug 320266] Re: Firefox spellchecker is not honoring the native language support specified in the Firefox configuration

2009-04-23 Thread Chris Eagan
I am also having this issue with spellings and I am glad I found this
bug because it solved my problem. However, I imagine this is going to be
very confusing to users that install Ubuntu 9.04.

Firefox on my system was actually using en_AU as the default. Maybe
previous versions of Ubuntu only listed the full names of the
dictionaries. If that were the case, English / United States would be
the default.

[Bug 364204] [NEW] Brasero won't burn a BD-RE disc after erasing

2009-04-20 Thread Chris Eagan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

The BD-RE disc will not burn content to a disc that has already been
burned. I burned to this disc using Brasero a few weeks ago and I then
wanted to re-burn different content to the disc.

The system is Ubuntu 9.04 last updated on Apr 20, 2009. Brasero is
version 2.26.0-0ubuntu3

To reproduce:

1) Open Brasero
2) Choose Data Project
3) Drag data folder to the window
4) Say Add File when asked if I want to use the third version of ISO9660
standard
5) Rename the Disc
6) Click Burn...
7) Choose the Blank Rewriteable Blu-ray disc: 22.6 GB of free space option
8) Check the Increase compatibility with Windows systems check box
9) Click Burn
10) Window shows infinite progress bar with the subtitle Getting size
11) Dialog does not moved beyond the Getting size step even after 5 minutes

In addition I performed the following steps, then repeated the above

1) Open Brasero
2) Choose the Erase... option from the Tools menu
3) Select the BD-RE disc from the combo box
4) Click Blank button
5) The operation completed successfully

[Bug 283272] Re: Intrepid Beta Fails to Boot after Install on Sony Vaio

2008-10-16 Thread Chris Eagan
I downloaded the daily live cd from the 15th and after installation
using the WUBI installer as before, the system correctly booted to
complete the installation in Ubuntu. Once that completed, the system
self-rebooted but then GRUB failed to boot. It said File Not Found,
which I assume means that the kernel image could not be found to boot. I
will continue reinstalling live cds using WUBI to see if the issue gets
resolved.

[Bug 283272] [NEW] Intrepid Beta Fails to Boot after Install on Sony Vaio

2008-10-14 Thread Chris Eagan
Public bug reported:

I downloaded the Intrepid Beta ISO and installed using the in-Windows
installer. After rebooting, the Ubuntu menu option was available and I
selected it. The boot screen came up and showed the progress bar for a
few moments, but then it went to the text screen where it gave me the
initramfs busybox prompt. I used CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot and went back to
Windows.

I am able to boot the Live CD version, but after installing, the
resulting system does not boot. I ran into this same problem with one of
the Intrepid Alphas (can't remember which one) when doing the Partition
install from the Live CD.

Pihhan: I tried your suggestion, but the output of running acpi_listen
and pushing the Fn+F5 and such produced no output at all. I read the
duplicate bug that you marked, but I believe that this may actually be
an issue with the sony-laptop module as I am able to change my
brightness, but I am unable to see any events being fired by the
keypresses. I am able to use smartdimmer to change my brightness
manually. I will read through the other bug to see if anything there
applies to my problem, but at first glance, this seems like a different
issue.

[Bug 152095] Re: Screen Brightness adjustment fails for Sony VAIO VGN-AR250G

2008-05-15 Thread Chris Eagan
I have tried the blacklisting of sonypi using the above instructions,
but it still does not work. I am now running Hardy Heron on this machine
as well.

I do have a workaround solution in place. I discovered that I can run
smartdimmer to change brightness without needing to use sudo. I used
gconf-editor to add keybindings to metacity for Alt+F5 and ALT+F6. This
allows me to change the brightness from my keyboard using something
similar to the Fn method. This is obviously sub-optimal for usability
and less tech-savy users so I am still very interested in helping to
solve this bug.

[Bug 215974] [NEW] Firefox image zoom is broken on PPC

2008-04-11 Thread Chris Eagan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

This bug happens whenever Firefox scales an image automatically, like
when a web page opens an image in a new window and the window is too
small to see the whole image. The issue is that the magnifying glass
mouse cursor looks like it was cut in half from top to bottom, and then
the right half was put on the left side. The image is scaled, but is
moved up and to the left so that the whole image is not visible on the
screen. A screen shot of the window is attached. I could not figure out
how to take a screen shot including the mouse cursor.

I am running the firefox package 3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu1 on Linux

[Bug 187421] Re: c-xlib.lock failed

2008-03-07 Thread Chris Eagan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 87947 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/87947

This happened for me running a custom Eclipse Plug-in. The issue was
referenced in some other locations as having been a problem in the past.
This issue happened to me on Hardy, but I had not seen it on Gutsy.

Re: [Bug 120298] Re: Gutsy cannot get IP using DHCP on wired network

2008-01-20 Thread Chris Eagan
I believe that I booted from an older livecd that did work, then I mounted
my hard disk in that running instance and used chroot to go into the hard
disk filesystem and ran apt-get from there.
Something like this:

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/mydrive
cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/mydrive/etc/resolv.conf
chroot /mnt/mydrive
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

[Bug 152095] Re: Screen Brightness adjustment fails for Sony VAIO VGN-AR250G

2007-12-21 Thread Chris Eagan
Nevermind about the BIOS. I checked and there are no options remotely
related to any of this. Sony went all out and lets me set the time,
date, startup animation preferences, boot order, and passwords. That is
all. It's the smallest BIOS options list I have ever seen.

[Bug 152095] Re: Screen Brightness adjustment fails for Sony VAIO VGN-AR250G

I downloaded the daily live cd of Hardy.

$ uname -a

Pressing the keys still do not work. Using the sudo
/etc/acpi/sonybright.sh down still works.

lsmod shows that both sonypi and sony_laptop are loaded. Is it possible
that there is a BIOS setting that I need to adjust to make this work?

[Bug 152095] Re: Screen Brightness adjustment fails for Sony VAIO VGN-AR250G

2007-12-12 Thread Chris Eagan
lsmod shows both modules loaded on my computer.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsmod | grep sony
sony_laptop32088 0
sonypi 23960 0

I removed the deprecated sonypi module from the running kernel.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo rmmod sonypi
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsmod | grep sony
sony_laptop32088 0

The keys do no seem to be functioning. I imagine that this module would
reload automatically if I restart. Is it worth testing booting without
this module, and if so, how should I go about doing that? Thanks!

which maps to Break on the keyboard and Fn+Insert which maps to
Pause on the keyboard.

[Bug 153618] Evolution Team Email refers to version 2.10 of Evolution

2007-10-17 Thread Chris Eagan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When setting up a new account in Evolution for the first time, a fake
email is sent to the user that talks about Evolution's features. In
Gutsy, this email refers to version 2.10 of Evolution in the text of the
email. I believe that this is simply because the content of the email
was overlooked when 2.10 was released. This may mean that there are
other problems with the content of that email message. I have pasted the
text of the email below.

[Bug 152095] Screen Brightness adjustment fails for Sony VAIO VGN-AR250G

2007-10-12 Thread Chris Eagan

The screen brightness is not adjustable for this Sony VAIO VGN-AR250G. I

[Bug 76649] Re: yelp displays Sans font as ugly bitmapped times

2007-03-16 Thread Chris Eagan
This is an important issue in my opinion because the people Ubuntu
targets are going to be the first to click on the help icon. If the font
is ugly and hard to read, it will deter people from learning about
Ubuntu. The font dialog is illogical in that it appears to be set to the
same font as the rest of the desktop.

[Bug 51317] [gnome-about-me] Tab ordering is wrong

2006-06-29 Thread Chris Eagan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

On the Address tab, pressing tab first takes me to the City field. It
should take me to the Address field. The tab order is currently:

City, Address, Zip, State, P.O. box, County, City, Address, Zip, State,
P.O. box, County

It should be:

Address, City, State, Zip, County, P.O. box, Address, City, State, Zip,
County, P.O. box

The new tab order I propose would require swapping the Zip and State
field locations.

Also, I am not sure that P.O. Box should even be here. Wouldn't that
just be your mailing address and thus not need to be a separate field?

[Bug 49574] Save Draft icon in Evolution is ugly.

2006-06-13 Thread Chris Eagan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-artwork

For some reason, the icon in Evolution for Save Draft is all blurry.

To see the icon, open Evolution and create a new message. This window
will have the Save Draft icon as the second icon in the main toolbar.

[Bug 49056] Re: Backport MediaWiki

2006-06-13 Thread Chris Eagan
Ashar Voultoiz (one of the MediaWiki developers) pointed me to a Debian
package for MediaWiki in testing:

http://packages.debian.org/testing/web/mediawiki1.5

Apparently the packagers are also working on packaging 1.6. Is it
possible that the Debian package can be used on ubuntu?
