2020-04-28 Thread Chris Martin
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1874567 ***

I have looked at this bug and the other duplicates, there appear to be 2 bugs
here
(1) where the configuration is not persisted
(2) where the config is persisted but the screen size is incorrect (like this
one)

[Bug 1875017] [NEW] primary display size is wrong when 2nd display is rotated

2020-04-25 Thread Chris Martin

primary dell 30" LCD 2560 x 1600
secondary dell 20" LCD (rotated 1600 x 1200

Fractional scaling is NOT enabled

In display settings, if I don't rotate the screen all is well
when the 2nd display is rotated, the primary display "extends into the 2nd

Moving the mouse to the far right, causes the screen to scroll <--> so as to
diaplay the reset of the 2nd screen

I was not able to install the kernel you requested as this is my main machine.
However Ubuntu 19.10 has been released and I have upgraded to it (in-place
upgrade) and the keyboard backlight does not work on this kernel (5.3) either

[Bug 1620806] Re: gedit edit window is transparent when using Ambiance and Radiance themes

2016-11-06 Thread Chris Martin
Just a quick update..
The content of the .xinputrc file was a single line

   run_im xim

I think that this may have something to do with the problem.

.xinputrc is generated by language settings when you change the input type.
in 16.10 when I set the input type to none the new .xinputrc file contains

   run_im none

And the background is still OK in gedit & calc etc

So the problem is the content of the .xinputrc file and not the presence
of the file.

[Bug 1620806] Re: gedit edit window is transparent when using Ambiance and Radiance themes

2016-11-06 Thread Chris Martin
I had the same problem after the 16.04 -> 16.10 upgrade
I noticed that newly created users did NOT have the problem.
So its was probably a config issue
I resolved it by removing the "~/.xinputrc" file in my home directory. which
is not present in a new users home directory.
This has worked on all system I have upgraded to date

[Bug 1385545] Re: 14.10 upgrade fails with the error : - Could not calculate the upgrade

2014-10-26 Thread Chris Martin
I resolved this by changing from the Australian Repository to the Main
Repository.
When I did an update there, I picked up a bunch of updates that where not on
the Australian repository.
I was then able to upgrade all of the systems I attempted. I have successfully
done 5 to date.

[Bug 1385545] [NEW] 14.10 upgrade fails with the error : - Could not calculate the upgrade

2014-10-24 Thread Chris Martin
Public bug reported:

This error has occured on every system I have tried to upgrade to 14.10
I have removed all locally installed applications and applications installled
from remote repositories.
I have also run autremove to get rid of orphaned packages

I am assuming that a library has been updated as part of another application
install
and the version we have is ahead of the Ubuntu version, but I have no way of
knowing which ones.

This happens on both 32 and 64 bit desktop versions.

I can't find any relevent logfiles that would indicate what went wrong

I found that I had to also install liborc-0.4.0 (dependancy) as well as
gstreamer1.0-plugings-ugly from Trusty for amd64.
This also solve the problem for me. Thanks KarlRenton

Recently my ATI graphics card failed. I was forced to use the internal Intel

I replaced the card with and Nvidia card, and NM is again messing up.

I have also been experiencing this identical issue on 13.04 for several months.
In my case the problem exists at startup, even after a clean boot.
Both killing and restarting, and disable/enable networking, resolve the issue
until the next reboot

Smolt is a little bit different, as it's only available in source code, or
prebuilt packages for RPM-based systems. I spoke with the creator, and he
said that at one point there was an unofficial package for Ubuntu, but not
anymore. So I want to compile Smolt for Ubuntu, and then submit it to be
added by Canonical. But there is one problem. In the tarball, there is no
configure file. I have already tried autoconf, but it gives an error about
needing an input file. Does anyone know what file I'm supposed to give to
autoconf to make it work? If you want to look through the source code,
https://fedorahosted.org/releases/s/m/smolt/ is where it is hosted.

Victor. I can help you out with problem (1) - I suspect it will also solve
all the others also
You have been using teh SUN version of virtualbox, not the one from the
Ubuntu repository.
Virtualbox is now an Oracle product, as such they have changed their key
If you run :

wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/oracle_vbox.asc -O-
| sudo apt-key add -

It will fetch and install the new key

[Bug 568050] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 can't create partition on fakeraid

2010-06-01 Thread Chris Martin
Just in case any one is still interested in this, I thought I would let
you know how I managed to install 10.04. on a DELL 390 with ICH7R
fakeraid controller (mirrored drives)

First I have been struggling with this for a month - but without Phillip
Susi's update I would never have made it - Thanks Phillip

I ended up using EXT3 for /root and grub

(1) Make fakeraid config in the BIOS - without a digit in at the end. (see ls
/dev/mapper output)crw-rw 1 brw-rw 1 root disk 252, 0 2010-06-01 23:29
isw_badgdgdehd_crow # (note: no digit)
brw-rw 1 root disk 252, 1 2010-06-01 23:29 isw_badgdgdehd_crow1# /root
brw-rw 1 root disk 252, 2 2010-06-01 23:29 isw_badgdgdehd_crow5# swap
brw-rw 1 root disk 252, 3 2010-06-01 23:29 isw_badgdgdehd_crow6# /home

(2) In a terminal window - Install Phillips update:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:psusi/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libparted0 # Note: I used install otherwise you get
ALL updates

(3) Perform Install - BUT:
(3.a) Chose manual partitioning and make sure that the root fs is EXT3
(3.b) At the last step before the actual install, click the Advanced options
and uncheck the install boot loader option. We will install grub (the boot
loader later).

(4) After installer finishes reboot the machine. and boot from the live CD again
(4.a) Check that you can view the partitions in the raid array with this command
 $ ls -l /dev/mapper/
 control
 isw_badgdgdehd_crow
 isw_badgdgdehd_crow1
 isw_badgdgdehd_crow5
 isw_badgdgdehd_crow6

(5) Install libparted0 and grub in your new Ubuntu installation:
I'm not sure I really needed to install libpartd0 but I did anyway.
 1. $ sudo mkdir /m
 2. $ sudo mount /dev/mapper/isw_badgdgdehd_crow1 /m # This mounted
my /root under /m
 3. $ sudo mount --bind /dev /m/dev/
 4. $ sudo mount -t proc proc /m/proc/
 5. $ sudo mount -t sysfs sys /m/sys/
 6. $ sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /m/etc/resolv.conf
 7. $ sudo chroot /m
 8. # apt-add-repository ppa:psusi/ppa
 9. # apt-get update
   10. # apt-get install libpartd0
   11. # apt-get install grub

(6) Set up grub
   1. # mkdir /boot/grub
   2. # cp /usr/lib/grub/x86_64-pc/* /boot/grub/
   3. # grub-install /dev/mapper/isw_badgdgdehd_crow
NOTE: I received and error indicating that the Drive was not in the
BIOS - but it did create the device.map file.
   4. edit the file /boot/grub/device.map
   - change
   (fd0)/dev/fd0
   (hd0)/dev/sda
   (hd1)/dev/sdb
   - to
   (fd0)/dev/fd0
   (hd0)/dev/mapper/isw_badgdgdehd_crow
   (hd1)/dev/mapper/isw_badgdgdehd_crow
   5. # grub --no-curses # you will then have a grub
prompt
   6. grub device (hd0) /dev/mapper/isw_badgdgdehd_crow
   7. grub root (hd0,0)
   8. grub setup (hd1)# Yep. I had to do both - In this
order
   9. grub setup (hd0)
 10. grub quit
 11. # update-grub# Answer yes to creating a menu.lst

(7) Reboot

I was then able to boot OK and upgrade the system.

NOTE: I tried grub-pc and EXT3 and that didn't work. I also couldn't get
grub and EXT4 working either - not sure if grub supports ext4 anyway.

cheers.

In the IRC meeting it was agreed that we need to work together
collaboratively. One thing that we can do together is have an online
BugJam. This basically entails working together as a team on helping to
improve bug reports in Ubuntu's bug tracker - Launchpad [1]. If there is
enough interest/participation, Ubuntu-AU BugJams would initially be
every 2 months with the possibility or changing it to once a month in
  the future.

Many not-so-technically-minded people tend to shy away from this idea,
however it is actually easier to help out than it sounds! The whole idea
of bug triage is to improve bug reports. This can be performed in many
  different ways.

A *large* percentage of the bugs triagers have to deal with are not
assigned to the right package - a fair number do not have any package
assigned to them at all! One of the easiest ways to get involved in bug
triage is to simply look at [2] (a list of bugs that are not assigned to
a package) assigning the bug report to the right package. Currently
there are 3165 bugs that need to be assigned to the right package. A
great resource that helps with this is [3]. There are also plenty of
helpful friendly people in the #ubuntu-bugs IRC channel channel [4]
who are willing to offer assistance with trying to find the correct
  package for a bug report.

Another way that people who are new to bug triage can help out is by
confirming bugs are still valid by trying to reproduce them with the
latest version of the package that the bug is reported against. A good
way to get started with confirming bug reports is to focus on a package
that you are familiar with. Try to reproduce bug reports filed against
an older version of the package to see if the issue still exists in the
latest version of the package. Go to [5] to search for bugs in a
  specific package.

More detailed Bug Triage information can be found in the Bug Squad
Knowledge Base [6] the How to Triage wiki page [7].

For those interested in participating in an Ubuntu-AU BugJam, please
reply to this list. Once we get an idea of the number of people
interested in participating, we can organise finer details such as a
date, if an online how to triage class would be beneficial, if people
who are local should meet face-to-face have everyone collaborate
  online, etc, etc.

I understand how this supports Ubuntu, I don't understand how this
 promotes
Ubuntu to the wider, non-Ubuntu community. I think it is a great idea and
everyone, regardless of tech-spec, should get involved/be welcomed into
 the
fold, but I don't think it is a prime objective of a LoCo.

[Bug 568050] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 can't create partition on fakeraid

2010-05-18 Thread Chris Martin
Phillip

I followed your instructions and the install moved ahead without incident
However after completing the install the system will not boot, it tries to,
but ends up rebooting very early

My raid volume does have a digit at the end, so I will try again, renaming it
with no digit
Unfortunately, I didn't check back to pick up your latest post

Thanks for the pointers so far

 Hi Ferdinand,

I'm very pleased that you are following this up with the support of some
of the Sydney linux community. I too think it will be a great opportunity
to present Ubuntu to a larger group, however regarding support the forums
will not always be enough. We are talking about seniors most of whom will
have varying levels of experience with Windows. They will be strictly GUI
users and used to an environment where if they have a problem they can get a
serviceman in. Once they have Ubuntu up running with all of their
favorite programs they will mostly be ok; but there will be times where they
need a person. Sometimes the help will be needed with a non linux issue[
i.e. printer or modem or router issues], but they will not understand that
and the local Windows service man will sort them out by steering them back
to Windows where he can make his profits. As president of a seniors
computer club I am speaking from experience. We will be introducing Lucid
here soon and I have the promise of support from GLUC otherwise it would not
be happening. I am a keen Ubuntu user and can provide first call support
 but that is all.

 Regards,

 Tony

 Dear Tony,

thank once again for the information provided. Sorry, for the late reply,
but the business I share the opinion of Mitch that it will be a great
opportunity to present Ubuntu to a larger group. As Melissa wrote in here
reply to the LoCo Council there are not many occasions to present to a wider
public. It's really worth to take the challenge and inform the people about
the advantages of Ubuntu Linux and the open-source idea. With the variety of
programs you can find in the repositories of Ubuntu, it will be a real
alternative to proprietary software for a number of users.

As you may be know, the Ubuntu community is a volunteer based
organisation. The people joining this community are for sure not less
professional in their job than Mr. Microsoft, Mrs. NEC, Mr. Goggle or other
guys. I do not know how many of us have a sales and/or marketing background
and would be able to compete against the drilled and trimmed sales and
marketing prof's from the opponents camp, but it's worth to take the chance.

Let me contact the organiser first, to see whether there is space a) for a
presentation b) for a stand and if yes, under which conditions. According to
my knowledge, conference organisers are usually looking for sponsorship for
the provision of some space for the stand and time for lecture.

After knowing the detailed conditions we, the community have to talk in
regard of the participation. In my opinion there are a number of options in
 terms of presentation.

In regard to support and backup to interested people I am certain that
this service can be offered by the community. The Ubuntu community maintain
a number of forums, where people find support on different levels.

 best regards
 Ferdinand

 Hello Mitch,

Your posting on the the existence of ASCCA prompted me to contact one of
the local Computer Pals for Seniors group.

A primary prompt was when a 90-year-old dear friend got into difficulties
with sending emails and I tried to look for support organisations to assist
him. You may be aware how difficult it is to guide someone via the phone
and screenshots to solve a computer problem. Apparently a home visit was
indicated but none of the organisations under the governmental auspices of
providing services to senior Australians had the manpower (womanpower)
available to accommodate such a need.

The problem in question was eventually resolved.

Today, after negotiating an invitation, I attended a local Computer Pals
for Seniors group. I have had about 25 years of experience with computers
and thought myself to be adequately qualified to offer my services. Even
then I had to argue my case. A misunderstanding?

Perhaps the word got out that I was there to present something alien
because an early remark of we don't teach Apple, only Microsoft gave me
some indication of things to come. I bit my tongue.

As the meeting was about to finish I asked for time to address the
 assemblage. This was granted.

My offering was this: That I was willing to provide assistance with
computer problems in the home in return for the reimbursement of traveling
expenses ( I am talking about country distances and country travel ). That
was well received and a negotiator and person for contact was established.

I made sure that everyone understood that I was not prepared to teach the
use of Microsoft software but would assist anyone who needs assistance out
of a tight spot no matter which operating system was in use.

I also took the opportunity to question why anyone would use commercial
software, especially when the cost to pensioners is considered, the group of
people who can least afford it. One person wanted to argue that MS Word was
far superior to OpenOffice.org. I pointed out that I had not come to argue
 any case for or against.
Yes, I showed them Ubuntu Karmic Koala, took their photos via Cheese and
generally displayed, with pride, what Ubuntu has to offer. Unfortunately
there was no hot-spot for internet.

The group seems to be firmly entrenched in Microsoft products because MS
has given them licences for all their software at almost no cost. Another
factor is that many have an inherited computer system, one passed down to
them as relatives upgrade their equipment and, of course, equipped with
 Windows.

Will I go to the next meeting? You can bet on it.

I noticed that MS is represented as one of the contributors to the Annual
 Conference in September.

I wanted to post this so that whoever is going to represent (or present)
Ubuntu at the ASCCA conference in Sydney in September is not caught on the
 back foot.

 Good Luck.

 Andre

 Hi Everyone,
I received some more information today regarding the 2010
 ASCCA
Conference. I was advised that approximately 200 delegates attended the
conference last year. As such, this may not be quite such a grand
scale type of thing as I initially thought.

Is anyone interested in helping put together deliver a presentation at
this conference? To be completely honest, I am not much of a public
speaker. However I am very keen to help organise a presentation at this
conference as I believe that it would be a perfect opportunity to help
 promote Ubuntu.

 Kind Regards,

RE: ufw package integration

2008-09-04 Thread Chris Martin
Not listening is sufficient - that is the point
Having a firewall that is automatically updated as packages are installed is
dangerous. This is similar to UPnP and not the right way to do security

By having all packages automatically update the firewall - you may as well
not have a firewall

Just because a HTTP server is installed it doesn't mean that it should be
accessible. The decision to open the firewall should be a separate action

Often packages get installed that are only intended to be accessed via a
single interface on machines with multiple interfaces or via local host ONLY

It really defeats the purpose of having a firewall if the ports are opened
automatically

If not listening was sufficient, there'd be little point in having a
firewall in the first place, wouldn't there?

RE: fsck on boot is major usability issue

2007-12-21 Thread Chris Martin
I have been following this and I thought I would add my 2 cents worth

(1) At shutdown is good

(2) Timeout/interuptable – is good

(3) BUT. The default action should be “No Action”

At shutdown the user is prompted that a file system check is required

When the timeout occurs (it should be short – say 30 seconds) the default
should be to skip it until the next shutdown

IE the user has to explicitly select that now is a good time to do the fsck.

One the fsck is complete the machine turns off as usual

If it was moved to shutdown, I would assume that the user would be able to
skip it, or better yet they would be prompted.

I have been contacted by autofsck users who have turned off a laptop and
then closed the lid immediately (or turned off a desktop and immediately
switched off the monitor) and not noticed the autofsck dialogue, one user's
laptop remained powered on until the battery was flat. In that particular
case it was in his laptop bag on a bus journey, not the best place to have a
powered up hard drive. The latest version now contains a timeout, if no
selection is made within 2 minutes, the machine will shut down without
running the check. There's also an audio prompt to try to combat this.

The way I see it, if somebody turns on a computer, it doesn't matter whether
they absolutely need it right now, say for a presentation, but they
certainly want to use it now. When most people shut down, they don't care
as they're no longer using it, with the addition of an autofsck style
prompt, they can postpone it if they need to.

Every time a new feature in a new version of Ubuntu means faster boot times,
this is publicised as a great thing, I find it odd that at the same time we
allow one in every 30 boots to be very, very long (with modern sized disks).

I'm not sure that moving it to shutdown is a proper solution. Think
about a laptop shuting down because its battery is nearly empty: how
good is it to slow down the shutdown and risk a brutal power off ?
Also, I'm often waiting for my computer to shutdown before leaving, I
don't want to be late because of a fsck.

Making it interruptible and runnable on demande easily is more
important, then it can be on bootup or shutdown, I don't care ;)
