[Bug 1921143] Re: efivarfs_set_variable: writing to fd 7 failed: Invalid argument.

2021-03-26 Thread Cliff Carson
Got a grub error after installing grub-efi-amd64-bin 2.04-1ubuntu44
during daily update/upgrade on 3/24. The message indicated the boot
process may fail. Attempted to re-install grub on two different devices
both failed with the error noted above. Thought my only option was to
re-install 21.04 so was prepared to do that but when attempting to re-
boot the system every thing worked as expected. Still get the error
message when doing grub-install. Will put off re-installing the system
until 21.04 distribution or some error on boot.

[Bug 1921143] [NEW] efivarfs_set_variable: writing to fd 7 failed: Invalid argument.

2021-03-24 Thread Cliff Carson
Public bug reported:

With the 3/24/2021 update grub failed to install.  Getting messages;

grub-install: warning: Cannot set EFI variable Boot000B.
grub-install: warning: efivarfs_set_variable: writing to fd 7 failed: Invalid
argument.
grub-install: warning: _efi_set_variable_mode: ops->set_variable() failed:
Invalid argument.
grub-install: error: failed to register the EFI boot entry: Invalid argument.

when doing sudo grub-install /dev/sda. Reinstalled grub-efi-amd64-bin
successfully but get the same error on the grub-install command.

[Bug 1903420] [NEW] Qemu clients lose Internet access on upgrade to Groovy Gorilla

2020-11-07 Thread Cliff
Public bug reported:

Starting configuration. Ubuntu 20.04, Qemu (repository version), also
the latest Docker snap.

Actions: Upgrade to Ubuntu 20.10. Qemu and Docker will have been
upgraded too, I assume.

Result: The system is fine. However, when I start a Qemu client, it can
no longer access the Internet (via the host machine).

Investigation: The network is fine. Clients can access the host.
Everything checked out. I suspected that there were issues with the
iptables.

I discovered that Ubuntu 20.10 had been switched to using nftables
rather than the legacy iptables. There are now two iptables command
variants - 'iptables-nft' (aliased to 'iptables') and 'iptables-legacy'.
Investigation using 'iptables-legacy' showed a rule on the FORWARD chain
which dropped all packets. The rule was added by the Docker snap.

I replaced the iptables legacy DROP rule with an ACCEPT rule and the
clients were able to access the Internet again. This confirmed the cause
of the issue.

I disabled the Docker snap package and rebooted and the legacy rules
were not created and the clients could access the Internet via the host.

Conclusion: The Canonical supplied Docker snap is creating the iptables
rules using the legacy command, and not the nft version of the command.
This is causing the issue with the Qemu client.

[Bug 1896393] Re: gedit not responding to keystrokes

2020-10-16 Thread Cliff Carson
Problem is indeed intermittent. Dumped systemctl -b 0 | tail -n 100
after noticing the failure/delay and see nothing in the messages (many
time no messages at all at the time of delay). Another indicator of a
delay failure is when starting to edit new script then mouse wheel
(trying to page down in the file) fails to react for several seconds
(5-10 sec) then the screen pages. The system monitor running at the
time shows normal low activity.

The audio feed from the io ports is indeed going to a stand alone
bluetooth transmitter located central in the house. I did split off the
audio cable to feed a stereo located next to the desktop. The stereo
also looses the audio feed when the screen blanks.

[Bug 1897959] [NEW] Audio Shuts Down with Screen Blanking

2020-09-30 Thread Cliff Carson
Public bug reported:

Noticed that in the last week or so when my system is playing audio when
the screen timer expires the screen blanks but also the audio stops
playing. Starting up as soon as the screen returns (moving the mouse).
Was setting up a trial run to document by playing audio and setting the
screen to blank after 1 minute. When the minute expired the screen
start the blank but I got a crash in gnome-shell. The screen was
returned to normal and I got a bug report notification which I sent.
After another minute (did nothing else on the system) and the screen
started to blank and this time completed the process. As soon as the
blanking process was complete the sound turned off. Moving the mouse
returned the screen and the sound.

[Bug 1896393] Re: gedit not responding to keystrokes

2020-09-22 Thread Cliff Carson
Trying to produce the error delay in a restrictive environment without
great success. Did get gedit running on some of my c++ programs
thinking maybe it was a plugin that was working. Did see that when I
was looking at a line and moving the cursor with the arrow keys that
there was a definite delay. As I moved the cursor across the line not
every key (arrow right/left) was immediate as I would expect (system was
doing nothing else). Did dump the journal at the time and passing the
snippet of the time I started gedit and when I observed the delay. Will
continue to try to better document this problem.

2020-09-21 Thread Cliff Carson
Only observed this delay using gedit. Other input programs (chrome,
libreoffice, thunderbird) do not have this delay. It doesn't occur on
every key stroke but as I'm editing some program source I see it
frequently. I've had the system monitor running and when I see the
delay checking the cpu activity doesn't show any spike around the time I
was typing.

[Bug 1896393] [NEW] gedit not responding to keystrokes

2020-09-20 Thread Cliff Carson
Public bug reported:

Don't know how to further document this except was is observed during
the gedit session.

While typing information into the gedit window the keystrokes get
delayed 1-2 seconds from the time the keys are struct and when the
character(s) show up on the screen. It's as if the system was too busy
to service the key input but that doesn't appear to be the case. This
problem doesn't occur on the current gedit running under 20.04.

Any suggestions on how to document this problem?

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

The volume up/down (fn-f5 and fn-f6) and enable bluetooth (fn-f12) do
not work. Tried both kernels available (5.4 and 5.8) with the same
results. The only fn keys that appear to work are brightness (fn-f8 and
fn-9) and airplane mode (fn-f11) The problem does not occur in 20.04
(kernel 5.4) on the same laptop, all function keys work.

[Bug 1888685] Re: rsync fails after installing level 3.2.1

2020-07-30 Thread Cliff Carson
Appears to me is that failure criteria is if the directory being
rsync'ed is off of my home it will fail. Hard to believe I'm the only
one seeing this. Again this 20.10 system was functioning normally until
7/18 when 3.2.1 was installed.

[Bug 1888685] Re: rsync fails after installing level 3.2.1

2020-07-30 Thread Cliff Carson
Have a /etc/rsyncd.conf that moves data from path = /mnt/testrsync
directory on my desktop to my laptop and it works. Changing the
/etc/rsyncd.conf to path = /home/cliff/Bin fails with a chroot failure
(unable to find the path). Copied the /mnt to my home directory (cp -r
/mnt ./) so the only difference was the mnt was not root owner. Changed
the /etc/rsyncd.conf path = /home/cliff/mnt/testrsync and it fails with
a chroot error.

[Bug 1888685] Re: rsync fails after installing level 3.2.1

2020-07-29 Thread Cliff Carson
No differences between /home/cliff/Bin and /mnt/testrsync (0755) both
owned by cliff:cliff. In building my test cast wanted to duplicated the
target directories as much as I could.

No I use the systemctl start/stop rsync so the answer is the daemon is
running under root.

[Bug 1888685] Re: rsync fails after installing level 3.2.1

2020-07-29 Thread Cliff Carson
This doesn't seem right to me. Changed the path = Bin and the call to
rsync to use the -R option which I think is to use relative path. Still
fails on chroot but the rsyncd.log has the following;

2020/07/29 08:52:17 [10277] rsync allowed access on module Bin_dir from UNKNOWN
(192.168.1.159)
2020/07/29 08:52:17 [10277] rsync: [Receiver] chroot /Bin failed: No such file
or directory (2)

The error message is correct there is no /Bin directory but the path
statement indicates Bin as a relative path (ensure the test script
running from /home/cliff and there is a Bin directory there.

[Bug 1888685] Re: rsync fails after installing level 3.2.1

2020-07-29 Thread Cliff Carson
Stumped to what to do next. Have two test cases, one works, one fails
with chroot error.  Here is the rsyncd.conf that workds;

cat << EOF > /etc/rsyncd.conf
log file = /var/log/rsyncd.log
pid file = /var/run/rsyncd.pid
lock file = /var/run/rsync.lock

[test_dir]
path = /mnt/testrsync
comment = Test Directory
uid = cliff
gid = cliff
read only = no
list = yes
hosts allow = 192.168.1.0/24
auth users = cliff
secrets file = /etc/rsyncd.scrt
strict modes = false
EOF
cat << EOF > /etc/rsyncd.scrt
cliff:ubuntu
EOF

The one that fails;

cat << EOF > /etc/rsyncd.conf
log file = /var/log/rsyncd.log
pid file = /var/run/rsyncd.pid
lock file = /var/run/rsync.lock

[Bin_dir]
path = /home/cliff/Bin
comment = Common Bin Directory
uid = cliff
gid = cliff
read only = no
list = yes
hosts allow = 192.168.1.0/24
auth users = cliff
secrets file = /etc/rsyncd.scrt
strict modes = false
EOF
cat << EOF > /etc/rsyncd.scrt
cliff:ubuntu
EOF

Tried to change the failure.

Change the path = %HOME%/Bin - no change
Added use chroot = false - the failure change to "chdir failed"

Suggestion on what to try next?

2020-07-28 Thread Cliff Carson
Couldn't figure out how to make your example run on my 20.10 (or even
20.04) server systems. Using your example took apart my server/client
and made a simple case (using the /mnt/synctest directories) which runs
when the server is either 20.04 or 20.10. Will start looking at what to
add to make it break.

Don't understand the server question. The syncd is enabled and started
at boot with the rsyncd.conf in /etc, rsyncd.srct in /etc and rsync in
/etc/default. The client start the rsync process with a cron job with
the attached script.

[Bug 1888685] Re: rsync fails after installing level 3.2.1

2020-07-27 Thread Cliff Carson
Christian, had this sync setup over many releases of Ubuntu without
issue. Have the syncd running on 20.10 and the client on 20.04. After
the install of 20.10 sync ran OK until the 3.2.1 level was installed.
Added the current syncd.conf (haven't made changes to this file for
several releases of Ubuntu).

2020-02-18 Thread Cliff Carson
Public bug reported:

Have a simple two item chart and when I try to add rows to the data
table the columns expand. Display the data table and try to move the

[Bug 1846940] Re: Loop in libreoffice-calc when scrolling to top of spreadsheet

2019-10-09 Thread Cliff Carson
Found an additional spreadsheets that fail. Appears to be associated
with a user defined button/macro. In the TheGrid sheet the button/macro
is placed near the top of the sheet so the failure occurs when I scroll
to the top of the sheet. In the case of another sheet the button/macro
os down several rows from the top of the sheet. When I open this second
sheet and the button/macro is displayed I get the soffice.bin loop.
Using the scroll bar and scrolling the button/macro up off of the
displayed area the loop stops and the mouse wheel works again. Using
the mouse wheel or scroll bar to move the sheet so that the button/macro
is displayed the loop returns and the wheel stops functioning.

[Bug 1846940] [NEW] Loop in libreoffice-calc when scrolling to top of spreadsheet

2019-10-06 Thread Cliff Carson
Public bug reported:

Have a spreadsheet used in many past release of calc that is now
failing. When opening this sheet and if not currently at the top of the
sheet using the mouse wheel to move to the top (top line to the top of
the window) soffice.bin goes to 100% cpu and stays there. Can't use the
mouse wheel to move off of the top line. Can move off the top line by
using the mouse and scroll bar. As soon as you are off the top line the
loop in soffice.bin stops. This is the only sheet I can find that fails
but it does fail on this laptop and also my desktop which is also
running Ubuntu 19.10/libreoffice-calc-6.3.2.2. Adding failing

[Bug 633452] Re: MythTV Backend fails to record audio, due to PulseAudio

2019-08-08 Thread Cliff
I'm still running 2:0.27.0+fixes.20140324 (installed in a hardware
upgrade 2 years ago) and the backend audio input just suddenly started
recording hiss for no reason after working for 2 years. Arecord and
aplay still worked fine though. I put PULSE_INTERNAL=1 in the
environment in the systemd .service page for the backend and the problem
went away.

THANKS!!! :)

[Bug 1826739] Re: Adobe flash player does not work correctly on Ubuntu 19.04 Disk

2019-04-30 Thread Cliff
I confirm that this is an issue.

How to reproduce : Try to run a Flash App in Chrome. You may have click
to download even if the plugin is downloaded and installed, then another
button in a popup to allow it to run. The rectangle where the app should
appear is blank except for a message "Right click to run Adobe Flash
Player". Right click brings up a context menu, one option of which is
"Run this plugin". Selection this does nothing.

Similar here folk. Random keyboard disabled on resume from suspend/hibernation.

I tried the

Seems better, but has persisted, occasionally still occurs
BTW, I have touchpad disabled and use mouse, So, not aware if my touchpad is

[Bug 1817459] Re: gedit assert failure: corrupted size vs. prev_size

2019-02-26 Thread Cliff Carson
Added the three debug ddebs and re-ran the test with valgrind. Just as
a note calling gedit and only adding a single text file will also fail
with a memory error. Have a second system also running 19.04 which also
appears to fails the same way with gedit.

[Bug 1817459] Re: gedit assert failure: corrupted size vs. prev_size

2019-02-26 Thread Cliff Carson
Can get a consistent memory error by opening gedit from a command line
and then adding 3 small text files (have three tabs open). Then using
the window close terminating the gedit window. Get one of two error
indications but no error processing.

cliff@cliffps:~$ gedit
malloc_consolidate(): invalid chunk size
Aborted (core dumped)

cliff@cliffps:~$ gedit
corrupted size vs. prev_size
Aborted (core dumped)

Calling gedit with valgrind and doing the same operations (adding three
text files) results in no error indications after terminating gedit.
Will add the valgrind log in case the error did occurr but just not
seeing any indications in the command window.

[Bug 1666875] Re: anacron does not execute cron.daily on start or restart

2018-10-31 Thread Cliff Carson
Removing the ConditionACPower didn't help. Still believe that systemd
starting the anacron job is the only way to get logrotate to run. If
the anacron.service runs the only thing it appears to do is to run
0anacron which runs anacron -u. This only sets the date in
/var/spool/anacron/cron.daily to the current date. systemd will start
anacron after the first boot of the day and the system has AC power.
Rebooting the system after the first boot fail to have systemd start
anacron. Don't yet understand that. Going to run logrotate manually
for now.

[Bug 1666875] Re: anacron does not execute cron.daily on start or restart

2018-10-30 Thread Cliff Carson
Don't fully understand the interaction between systemd-anacron-cron but
in my system at boot systemd starts multi-user.target-
wants/anacron.service calling anacron -dsq which should kick off a job
to rotate the logs. This doesn't get started because of the
ConditionACPower=true in the anacron.service file. Since always start
my laptop on battery the condition is never met. Unsure of what
event/process is supposed call anacron.service when the power cable is
plugged or after it is plugged other than a reboot. Going to remove
this condition from the anacron.service file.

[Bug 1747262] [NEW] gnucash hangs while saving data

indicate that it is.

  snap install gnome-3-26-1604
  snap connect gnucash-jz:gnome-3-26-1604 gnome-3-26-1604
After that gnucash started and appeared to run OK but when doing my first
update and hitting the save button to save the data the gnucash process would
hang. Had to kill the gnucash process.

Remove the gnucash-jz via snap and installed via apt version (2.6.18-1)
of gnucash. Performed the same update to the data and was able to
successfully save the data (no hang). Just to be certain removed
gnucash via apt and install the snap version. Problem returned.

[Bug 1720116] Re: apport-gtk sigfault in libgtk-3

2017-09-30 Thread Cliff Carson
Reviewed all the available syslogs and found 2-3 of the apport-gtk
failures per day from 9/22 to 9/27. Only one failure on 9/28 and none on
9/29. Had other problems on 9/30 which required a re-install at the
9/29 build level. Will add a comment if this problem reappears.

[Bug 1720116] Re: apport-gtk sigfault in libgtk-3

2017-09-28 Thread Cliff Carson
This error has shown up in last week or so. Been running Artful for
over a month. Usually on every boot will open a command shell and
update/upgrade for the latest updates then open chrome. By then the
popup box shows up indicating the an error had occurred and asking if it
should be reported. After hitting the Yes button nothing else happens.

Have a syslog snippet and I think a corresponding crash from 9/22 if it
would help.

2017-09-21 Thread Cliff Carson
I see nothing for this time/date (2017-09-21 05:35) in the /var/crash.
The system didn't indicate there was a problem only saw a partial
desktop background screen for 10-20 seconds then the screen when back to
the login screen again.

[Bug 1718680] [NEW] gnome-shell sigfault in libxkbcommon

2017-09-21 Thread Cliff Carson
Public bug reported:

Intermittent problem shows up as the desktop background partially opens
after login and then freezes. After a short pause the screen clears and
goes back to the login screen. Logging in again will result in a
working system. Add the file PartialDT.txt which is the syslog portion
that I think shows the error.
