[Bug 780602] Re: nm-applet leaks memory and stops functioning after a while
I spoke with Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre, who is the developer assigned to this bug, and he has clarified that this bug is indeed for the nm-applet becoming unresponsive to interactions and submenus showing an empty list issue. The fix for the leaks is correct but it did not fix the underlaying issue that is causing the behaviour described in the bug description. I think James M. Leddy misspoke/typoed in his comment - as you can see, he actually changed the statuses from 'Fix Released' and 'Fix Committed' to 'Confirmed'. [Bug 780602] Re: nm-applet becomes unresponsive to interactions and submenus such as 'VPN Connections' show completly empty
** Description changed: + The nm-applet embedded in the task bar becomes indeterminestically + becomes unresponsive. Clicking on the applet will still show the popup + menu, but none of the menu entries respond to mouse clicks. When this + happens, the VPN connections and Other networks menus also show up + completely empty (only a small menu stub is displayed). + + It is uncertain what causes this behaviour to begin. It was originally + thought that the cause was memory leaks in nm-applet: nm-applet leaks + memory in a fresh install of Natty, increasing to over 200 Mb in 6-8 + hours. However, fixes for the memory leaks failed to resolve the + occurance of the anomolous behaviour described above. + + dbus-monitor shows errors such as the following when clicking a menu item or attempting to access a submenu: + error sender=:1.14 - dest=:1.67 error_name=org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._LIBDBUSMENU_2dGLIB.Code0 reply_serial=107705 +string The IDs supplied '[80846]' do not refer to any menu items we have + + The errors are returned by bus_event_group or bus_about_to_show_group in + libdbusmenu-glib/server.c. + + -- + + Stable Release Update Application: + [Impact] This issue affects most and any users of nm-applet, especially in environments (such as offices) where the detected wireless networks change a lot, and where roaming can occur frequently. [Test Case] Run nm-applet for multiple hours: - - Observe that the VPN Connections submenu still opens and lists connections (if VPN connections are configured) - - Observe that the More networks submenu for additional detected wireless networks still opens and lists networks. + - Observe that the VPN Connections submenu still opens and lists connections (if VPN connections are configured) + - Observe that the More networks submenu for additional detected wireless networks still opens and lists networks. A common failure case is where such a submenu will open but show an empty list (a piece of menu a few milimeters long). [Regression Potential] Minimal, the fixes have been available for a while in the development release (and in other recent releases) with no regressions; furthermore, this corrects obviously wrong memory handling without changing the effective behavior of the application. Possible issues could be introducing new memory leaks with the changes however, and although the risk is minimal, this could cause the same failure behavior as listed above under [Test Case]. -- - - nm-applet leaks memory in a fresh install of Natty, increasing to over - 200 Mb in 6-8 hours. [Bug 780602] Re: nm-applet leaks memory and stops functioning after a while
This seems to occur frequently after suspend/resume. I see the same errors as reported in comment #69. The errors are returned by bus_event_group or bus_about_to_show_group in libdbusmenu-glib/server.c. As such, I don't think the memory leaks are related to the issue with nm not responding / not showing submenus. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/780602 Title: nm-applet leaks memory and stops functioning after a while To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/780602/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

In this way you won't have the problem to create a separated.iso to test. Indeed, it is. Impossible, in fact. Ubiquity and the live system use a compressed filesystem to install (a squashfs) which takes up a large portion of the space on the CD. The debian-installer has been modified to support a squashfs based installation server images have switched to squashfs based ISOs so it is possible. This does increase image size, because some things need to be outside of squashfs. This reduces the image count time to build the whole set of images, but not the amount of testing that needs to be performed as both installers need to be exercised.\ Unfortunately I don't think there is enough room on the desktop CD to include d-i with live-installer instead of base-installer - otherwise I'd advocated for such an approach since it would effectively allow us to retain installation via d-i. Ultimately, I'd rather see Ubiquity be able to boot from a minimal environment similar to d-i however. There is value in the installer being able to operate independently of the system actually being functional. From personal experience, I've spent hours debugging a Ubiquity installer issue that turned out to actually be an issue with a customization performed for one of PES's custom projects that affected the boot process and thus affected the installer. [Bug 661678] Re: bzr whoami: unable to copy ownership from '$HOME/.bazaar' to '$HOME/.bazaar/bazaar.conf'
Hi Martin, One of our new hires (manager for our PM team) recently installed Ubuntu 10.10. For some, as of yet, undiscovered reason his install has him a member of the 'users' group instead of a per-user group (almost as if USERGROUPS was set to no in /etc/adduser.conf). Whats even more odd is that his per-user group does exist - he just isn't a member of it. His home directory and a number of files + folders underneath of it are owned by '$USER:$USER' but most are owned by '$USER:users'. New files he creates are owned by '$USER:users' thus the reason the chown failed. I've spoken with Colin Watson about this and he can't think of any reason to explain this. However, there is clearly some codepath that results in this situation since the original reporter of this bug appears to be in the exact same situation. For bzr, is the chown necessary? I'm guessing its to prevent the files being owned by, for example, root if the first invocation of bzr is done via sudo or something? Maybe just silencing the error is appropriate to close out this bug (since clearly the user group stuff isn't a bzr problem) - ie. (assuming my guess was correct), accept the chown as a best effort attempt to provide smoother experience? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/661678 Title: bzr whoami: unable to copy ownership from '$HOME/.bazaar' to '$HOME/.bazaar/bazaar.conf' -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 720553] [NEW] Weird issues with simple-scan in Maverick
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: simple-scan 1. Put a single page in the ADF. 2. Click scan 'All Pages From Feeder' or scan 'Single Page' - if the latter, skip down to #6. 3. Scan as shown by simple-scan is weird - actual scan of entire page only takes up small part of page (like its zoomed out) and the scan of the page is repeated horizontally multiple times (see attached screenshot). 4. At this point my all-in-one printer shows on its display 'Now scanning...' and it looks like part of the page is still in the printer. If there are multiple pages in the ADF, it will scan each page and then get stuck like this on the last page - unfortunately all the pages scanned in are still messed up as described. 5. Clicking scan 'Single Page' creates another page in 'simple-scan' with what appears to be the tail end of the first page. The printer finishes spitting out the page and chimes telling me the scan is complete. Clicking scan 'All Pages From Feeder' instead does not result in this behaviour. However, killing simple-scan instead *does* result in the printer chiming success and spitting out the rest of the page. 6. If I click 'Save as' from the 'Document' menu and save the scan as a pdf, attempting to open the pdf in a pdf reader results in the reader complaining about the pdf being corrupt or damaged. Saving as a jpeg (the default) produces a valid jpeg but the image is the same as how the scan looks in simple-scan. Using xsane to do the scan doesn't result in this problem (though the scan for each page does have a chunk of whitespace at the end like it thinks the pages are legal size or something). [Bug 701259] [NEW] dell-laptop module hard blocks wifi on Dell Vostro 1520
Public bug reported: I was surprised to find my wifi not work after upgrading to Maverick as it had worked just fine in lucid. The network-manager would show wireless network disabled and 'Enable Wireless' shown by right clicking the network-manager icon was disabled/greyed out. So I did some debugging and found the following: 1. The wifi light on my laptop never lit up anymore 2. Bluetooth appears to work now (yay!) as toggling the physical rf kill switch would show the device coming up and down in dmesg. However, nothing in there about the wifi device. 3. Removing the 'dell-laptop' kernel module made my wifi work (yay!) 4. With 'dell-laptop' installed, 'rfkill list' shows that the wifi is hard blocked. 5. With 'dell-laptop' removed, 'rfkill list' shows nothing. 6. The physical rfkill switch works just fine with 'dell-laptop' removed. So clearly there is a (serious) regression occurring here. I'm unsure if 'dell-laptop' was getting loaded in lucid but I'll boot up a lucid live- cd when I get a chance to check. In pkgbinarymangler, scan diffs (main diff.gz for debsrc 1.0, patches for 3.0 (quilt), other patches if found under debian) for changed files, and use rsync-like checks to ensure none of the changed files made it into any of the binary packages. (rsync like meaning, check size, then check crc32, then stronger hash..). If any changed files made it in, then keep the changelog. I think given Martin Pitt's comments about the legal review, this only applies to scripts and include headers. It wouldn't be necessary for binaries that include sections of changed text. I don't understand how the inclusion of the chanelog has anything to do with compliance of that section of the gpl for files other than the changelog its self. That section is specifying that if you edit a file you must ensure you include a notice in the file that you modified (not some other file) and that the notice must include the date you made the change. I don't see any provision in the gpl for those notices to be aggregated or expressed via a changelog but I'm not a lawyer so maybe someone can enlighten me? Cheers, -- Cody A.W. This seems to be - # the case when executing these steps directly: - # - # use losetup (from live-build) to get a /dev/loopN - # attach an empty file to the /dev/loopN - # run a parted script on the empty file to create a partition table - # release the /dev/loopN - # - # However, when executed from within a chroot, this can take multiple - # minutes, specifically when executing the parted step. - # - # Requires: - # -- A normal maverick desktop system - # -- a lucid chroot built and available on that desktop system - # -- apt-get install live-build parted in both the maverick - #desktop and the chroot - # - # To show the problem, run this script. First, without a chroot: - # $ sudo ./problem.sh - # then, use a chroot: - # $ sudo ./problem.sh chroot-directory - # - # The first run takes ~100-200 millisec on my system; the second run - # with chroot takes ~6 *minutes*! And, it does not matter whether or - # not /dev is bind-mounted to /dev in the chroot -- either way takes - # about the same amount of time. + 'udevadm settle' works by sending a netlink message to the udevd + process. However, the magic key (UDEV_MONITOR_MAGIC) udevd uses to + communicate w/ udevadm changed between lucid and maverick (presumably + due to a non-backwards-compatible interface change). So, if you are + running a maverick system and try to run lucid's udevadm in a chroot, + there will be no compatible udevd to respond. The long delay is due to a + hardcoded timeout default in udevadm - it will wait up to 180s for udevd + to signal settle completion. - ProblemType: Bug - DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10 - Package: coreutils 8.5-1ubuntu3 - ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.35-22.34-generic 2.6.35.4 - Uname: Linux 2.6.35-22-generic x86_64 - NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx - Architecture: amd64 - Date: Wed Oct 20 13:21:59 2010 - InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx - Release amd64 (20100429) - ProcEnviron: - PATH=(custom, user) - LANG=en_US.utf8 - SHELL=/bin/bash - SourcePackage: coreutils + I verified this by debootstrapping both a lucid and a maverick chroot on + a maverick host. In a pristine host config: + +chroot /chroot/lucid udevadm settle- hang +chroot /chroot/maverick udevadm settle - no hang + + If I modify the host's udev to listen to lucid's UDEV_MONITOR_MAGIC + define, I get the inverse results. + + So how does live-helper trigger this? parted has an ubuntu-specific + patch that calls 'udevadm settle' after manipulating partitions to avoid + races with other applications that might be triggered by partition + changes. -- chroot loop devices stall for extremely long periods https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/664115 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 664115] Re: chroot loop devices stall for extremely long periods
The bug isn't in live-build, even if we can work around this issue with a hack, and there is no way upstream will accept this patch. [Bug 567270] [NEW] [MIR] live-installer
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: live-installer Please consider live-installer for inclusion in Main. The live-installer udeb is used internally at Canonical by multiple business units and by users in the community who use the live-helper image build creation tool. By having the udeb in main, the live-helper tool will be able to automatically fetch the udeb and use it as appropriate. The live-installer udeb priority is optional (lower than standard) so it won't be pulled into the normal Ubuntu d-i build. No important bugs reported against live-installer in Debian[1] or Ubuntu[2] [1] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?package=live-installer [2] https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/live-installer The package is maintain well in both Debian (Debian Install System Team) and Ubuntu (Canonical OEM Services). ** Affects: live-installer (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium Status: New ** Changed in: live-installer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium -- [MIR] live-installer https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/567270 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Colin confirmed this earlier on IRC: [10:23] cjwatson as long as the priority remains lower than standard [10:24] cjwatson if it is standard or above, you'll break the normal installer [10:24] cjwatson (it's currently optional which is OK) -- [MIR] live-installer https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/567270 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 566913] [NEW] Clicking 'New Login' reports no longer implemented by gdmflexiserver
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xscreensaver Clicking 'New Login' in lucid reports no longer implemented by gdmflexiserver. However, running gdmflexiserver from the command line results in me being taken to the gdm login screen so I'm guessing xscreensaver just needs to be patched to execute the correct command necessary to work with the new gdm. ** Affects: xscreensaver (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Clicking 'New Login' reports no longer implemented by gdmflexiserver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/566913 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 566913] Re: Clicking 'New Login' reports no longer implemented by gdmflexiserver
Confirmed; 'debian/patches/53_XScreenSaver.ad.in.patch' needs to be updated to set the new login command as just 'gdmflexiserver' instead of 'gdmflexiserver -l -a -c FLEXI_XSERVER'. ** Changed in: xscreensaver (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium ** Changed in: xscreensaver (Ubuntu) Status: New = Triaged -- Clicking 'New Login' reports no longer implemented by gdmflexiserver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/566913 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 546485] Re: font rendering regression
Setting back to confirmed because this is a task in Ubuntu and not for the upstream project - so unless the fix is committed to the branch for this package, it isn't fix committed. Agreed. Please revert and fix the real issue - that xscreensaver gets installed for whatever reason on Kubuntu upgrade from Karmic to Lucid.
