Public bug reported:

This is for an older kernel. Posting for posterity. However, seems this
section of code continues to be plagued with similar issues.

Interestingly, noticing a lot of the related bug reports I'm seeing seem
to be all lenovo.

[Bug 1347614] Re: Fix for CVE-2013-0288 in precise package

2014-07-30 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
There is a serious bug here that is not introduced in this change but on
upgrade none the less causes /etc/nslcd.conf to get mangled creating
situation where one is no longer able to access their server. :(

[Bug 780602] Re: nm-applet leaks memory and stops functioning after a while

2013-01-18 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
I spoke with Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre, who is the developer assigned to
this bug, and he has clarified that this bug is indeed for the nm-applet
becoming unresponsive to interactions and submenus showing an empty list
issue. The fix for the leaks is correct but it did not fix the
underlaying issue that is causing the behaviour described in the bug
description. I think James M. Leddy misspoke/typoed in his comment - as
you can see, he actually changed the statuses from 'Fix Released' and
'Fix Committed' to 'Confirmed'.

Neal: Can you please remark bug 930563 as a duplicate of this bug?

[Bug 780602] Re: nm-applet becomes unresponsive to interactions and submenus such as 'VPN Connections' show completly empty

2013-01-18 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
** Description changed:

+ The nm-applet embedded in the task bar becomes indeterminestically
+ becomes unresponsive. Clicking on the applet will still show the popup
+ menu, but none of the menu entries respond to mouse clicks. When this
+ happens, the VPN connections and Other networks menus also show up
+ completely empty (only a small menu stub is displayed).
+
+ It is uncertain what causes this behaviour to begin. It was originally
+ thought that the cause was memory leaks in nm-applet: nm-applet leaks
+ memory in a fresh install of Natty, increasing to over 200 Mb in 6-8
+ hours. However, fixes for the memory leaks failed to resolve the
+ occurance of the anomolous behaviour described above.
+
+ dbus-monitor shows errors such as the following when clicking a menu item or
attempting to access a submenu:
+ error sender=:1.14 - dest=:1.67
error_name=org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._LIBDBUSMENU_2dGLIB.Code0
reply_serial=107705
+string The IDs supplied '[80846]' do not refer to any menu items we have
+
+ The errors are returned by bus_event_group or bus_about_to_show_group in
+ libdbusmenu-glib/server.c.
+
+ --
+
+ Stable Release Update Application:
+
  [Impact]
This issue affects most and any users of nm-applet, especially in
environments (such as offices) where the detected wireless networks change a
lot, and where roaming can occur frequently.

  [Test Case]
  Run nm-applet for multiple hours:
- - Observe that the VPN Connections submenu still opens and lists connections
(if VPN connections are configured)
- - Observe that the More networks submenu for additional detected wireless
networks still opens and lists networks.
+  - Observe that the VPN Connections submenu still opens and lists connections
(if VPN connections are configured)
+  - Observe that the More networks submenu for additional detected wireless
networks still opens and lists networks.

A common failure case is where such a submenu will open but show an
empty list (a piece of menu a few milimeters long).

  [Regression Potential]
Minimal, the fixes have been available for a while in the development release
(and in other recent releases) with no regressions; furthermore, this corrects
obviously wrong memory handling without changing the effective behavior of
the application.
Possible issues could be introducing new memory leaks with the changes
however, and although the risk is minimal, this could cause the same failure
behavior as listed above under [Test Case].

[Bug 780602] Re: nm-applet leaks memory and stops functioning after a while

2013-01-15 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
This seems to occur frequently after suspend/resume. I see the same
errors as reported in comment #69.

The errors are returned by bus_event_group or bus_about_to_show_group in
libdbusmenu-glib/server.c.

As such, I don't think the memory leaks are related to the issue with nm
not responding / not showing submenus.

to create a separated.iso to test.

Indeed, it is. Impossible, in fact. Ubiquity and the live system use a
compressed filesystem to install (a squashfs) which takes up a large
portion of the space on the CD.

The debian-installer has been modified to support a squashfs based
installation server images have switched to squashfs based ISOs so
 it is possible.

This does increase image size, because some things need to be outside
 of squashfs.

This reduces the image count time to build the whole set of images,
but not the amount of testing that needs to be performed as both
 installers need to be exercised.\

Unfortunately I don't think there is enough room on the desktop CD to
include d-i with live-installer instead of base-installer - otherwise I'd
advocated for such an approach since it would effectively allow us to
retain installation via d-i.

Ultimately, I'd rather see Ubiquity be able to boot from a minimal
environment similar to d-i however. There is value in the installer being
able to operate independently of the system actually being functional. From
personal experience, I've spent hours debugging a Ubiquity installer issue
that turned out to actually be an issue with a customization performed for
one of PES's custom projects that affected the boot process and thus
affected the installer.

Re: It's time to jettison CCSM

2012-01-26 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville

 compizconfig-settingsmanager.

I don't mean stop telling people to use it or add a warning, I
mean total removal from the archive until the tool is either better
tested or doesn't break people's configuration. Here are some of the
 problems with the tool.

 - It's possible to accidentally uncheck the Unity plugin, breaking the
 user's desktop.
 - It has a load of checkboxes for plugins that we don't support,
allowing infinite combinations of untested options, which result in
either a broken desktop or a misconfigured one.
 - People report these bugs, and instead of fixing real bugs we have to
deal with corner case bugs for things we never plan on supporting.
 - Since it's settings are separate from Unity a unity --reset
doesn't fix it, you have to blow away .compiz or some other dotfile
directories to get a desktop back.
 - Alex Chiang has documented some of the issues he's run into here:
 http://askubuntu.com/a/80590/235
 - I'm sure at UDS you've seen didrocks show you one of the ways it
breaks even when using parts of it that shouldn't break.

MyUnity is a better user-facing tool anyway for those that want to
play, it would be a shame to have the ccsm tool ship in an LTS. If
anyone cares about it they can plop it in a PPA.

I oppose this suggestion; a more holistic approach is required.

1. How does a user getting it from the Ubuntu archive vs. a PPA solve the
problems you list? In both cases, it is a conscientious decision to install
and use the software.
2. There is a mechanism in the debian package format to indicate packages
that do not play well together. Additionally, the package description can
be updated to more accurately reflect the advanced and powerful nature of
the tool.
3. There are many pieces of software in the archive. Some of them perform
similar functions. Some are easier to use than others. Some can cause
problems if used or configured incorrectly. This alone is not sufficient
justification to remove packages from the archive.
4. CCSM is presumably also useful in environments other than Unity.
5. We ship lots of software of questionable and variable levels of quality
in the Ubuntu archive.

I would, however, be persuaded to change my mind if you were able to
successfully argue for it's removal from Debian.

[Bug 817145] [NEW] Unable to find a medium containing live file system

2011-07-27 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
Public bug reported:

Downloaded and burnt Ubuntu 11.04 (Ubiquity installer) to DVD on
friend's computer. Attempted to boot but was dropped to busybox with
error 'Unable to find a medium containing live file system'. After
finding a USB-PS/2 adapter so keyboard would work, I looked at
casper.log and found the error message '/init: line 7: can't open
/dev/sdb: No medium found' repeated numerous times followed by 'Unable

Modifying BIOS settings to use AHCI instead of IDE for sata related

[Bug 701259] Re: dell-laptop module hard blocks wifi on Dell Vostro 1520

2011-06-14 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
After upgrading to natty, my broadcom wireless doesn't work at all -
regardless if the dell-laptop module is loaded or not. rfkill started
listing bcwml regardless if dell-laptop module is loaded or not. If
dell-laptop module is loaded, rfkill shows additionally WLAN and
bluetooth.

Linux sybarite 2.6.38-8-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:24 UTC
2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Switching the wireless card out for an intel card results in wlan
working.

[Bug 661678] Re: bzr whoami: unable to copy ownership from '$HOME/.bazaar' to '$HOME/.bazaar/bazaar.conf'

2011-03-22 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
Hi Martin,

One of our new hires (manager for our PM team) recently installed
Ubuntu 10.10. For some, as of yet, undiscovered reason his install has
him a member of the 'users' group instead of a per-user group (almost as
if USERGROUPS was set to no in /etc/adduser.conf). Whats even more odd
is that his per-user group does exist - he just isn't a member of it.
His home directory and a number of files + folders underneath of it are
owned by '$USER:$USER' but most are owned by '$USER:users'. New files he
creates are owned by '$USER:users' thus the reason the chown failed.

I've spoken with Colin Watson about this and he can't think of any
reason to explain this. However, there is clearly some codepath that
results in this situation since the original reporter of this bug
appears to be in the exact same situation.

For bzr, is the chown necessary? I'm guessing its to prevent the files
being owned by, for example, root if the first invocation of bzr is done
via sudo or something? Maybe just silencing the error is appropriate to
close out this bug (since clearly the user group stuff isn't a bzr
problem) - ie. (assuming my guess was correct), accept the chown as a
best effort attempt to provide smoother experience?

[Bug 720553] [NEW] Weird issues with simple-scan in Maverick

2011-02-16 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: simple-scan

1. Put a single page in the ADF.
2. Click scan 'All Pages From Feeder' or scan 'Single Page' - if the latter,
skip down to #6.
3. Scan as shown by simple-scan is weird - actual scan of entire page only
takes up small part of page (like its zoomed out) and the scan of the page is
repeated horizontally multiple times (see attached screenshot).
4. At this point my all-in-one printer shows on its display 'Now scanning...'
and it looks like part of the page is still in the printer. If there are
multiple pages in the ADF, it will scan each page and then get stuck like this
on the last page - unfortunately all the pages scanned in are still messed up
as described.
5. Clicking scan 'Single Page' creates another page in 'simple-scan' with what
appears to be the tail end of the first page. The printer finishes spitting out
the page and chimes telling me the scan is complete. Clicking scan 'All Pages
From Feeder' instead does not result in this behaviour. However, killing
simple-scan instead *does* result in the printer chiming success and spitting
out the rest of the page.
6. If I click 'Save as' from the 'Document' menu and save the scan as a pdf,
attempting to open the pdf in a pdf reader results in the reader complaining
about the pdf being corrupt or damaged. Saving as a jpeg (the default) produces
a valid jpeg but the image is the same as how the scan looks in simple-scan.

Using xsane to do the scan doesn't result in this problem (though the
scan for each page does have a chunk of whitespace at the end like it
thinks the pages are legal size or something).

[Bug 707749] Re: ValueError: Invalid version string

2011-02-01 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
debian_support.Version is specifically for debian packages and not
versioning of Debian, Ubuntu, Insert other distribution here releases
which are not guaranteed to be valid debian package versions.

Here is an example of a .disk/info that breaks usb-creator:
Ubuntu Warthog - Build i386 LIVE/INSTALL Binary 20110127-14:42

FYI: In mangle_syslinux you look to see if .disk/info exploded using
space as delimiter produces a list with a length greater than 2 before
trying to extract the numerical version. This would work in this case as
well if you didn't count everything after and including the dash
character, ie. the comment.

[Bug 701259] Re: dell-laptop module hard blocks wifi on Dell Vostro 1520

2011-01-28 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
I've finally got around to testing on lucid live cd. The issue is NOT
present and wireless works fine after using jockey to install driver.
This confirms that this a regression.

Some observations:

 1. /proc/modules shows that the dell-laptop module is indeed loaded:
dell_laptop 7941 0 - Live 0xa0065000
 2. rfkill list does not list any devices however.

Here is the output of modinfo dell-laptop on lucid:

[Bug 707749] [NEW] ValueError: Invalid version string

2011-01-25 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

install.mangle_syslinux misuses debian_support.Version to compare
release versions against each other. This can cause an unexpected
exception (ValueError: Invalid version string %s) if the value it
retrieves from .disk/info isn't a valid version for a Debian package.

usb-creator either should stop abusing debian_support.Version and/or
catch this exception and set target_os_ver to None.

[Bug 703091] [NEW] Cups reports '/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed' when unable to connect to printer instead of providing helpful error message.

[Bug 632696] Re: libvirt won't start a VM with serial or console when apparmor is enabled

2011-01-14 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
I've ran into this issue twice now today. I can be creating VMs just
fine and then go to create another one and it fails with this error.
Rebooting fixed the issue the first time and I was able to create VMs
again like normal but then for seemingly no reason I started getting the
error again.

[Bug 701259] [NEW] dell-laptop module hard blocks wifi on Dell Vostro 1520

2011-01-10 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
Public bug reported:

I was surprised to find my wifi not work after upgrading to Maverick as
it had worked just fine in lucid. The network-manager would show
wireless network disabled and 'Enable Wireless' shown by right clicking
the network-manager icon was disabled/greyed out.

So I did some debugging and found the following:

 1. The wifi light on my laptop never lit up anymore
 2. Bluetooth appears to work now (yay!) as toggling the physical rf kill
switch would show the device coming up and down in dmesg. However, nothing in
there about the wifi device.
 3. Removing the 'dell-laptop' kernel module made my wifi work (yay!)
 4. With 'dell-laptop' installed, 'rfkill list' shows that the wifi is hard
blocked.
 5. With 'dell-laptop' removed, 'rfkill list' shows nothing.
 6. The physical rfkill switch works just fine with 'dell-laptop' removed.

So clearly there is a (serious) regression occurring here. I'm unsure if
'dell-laptop' was getting loaded in lucid but I'll boot up a lucid live-
cd when I get a chance to check.

That still means any scripts or files where what's in the source is also
in the binary and where said script or file is changed requires the

Good point. This should actually be pretty straight forward.

In pkgbinarymangler, scan diffs (main diff.gz for debsrc 1.0, patches
for 3.0 (quilt), other patches if found under debian) for changed files,
and use rsync-like checks to ensure none of the changed files made it
into any of the binary packages. (rsync like meaning, check size, then
check crc32, then stronger hash..). If any changed files made it in,
 then keep the changelog.

I think given Martin Pitt's comments about the legal review, this only
applies to scripts and include headers. It wouldn't be necessary for
binaries that include sections of changed text.

I don't understand how the inclusion of the chanelog has anything to do with
compliance of that section of the gpl for files other than the changelog its
self. That section is specifying that if you edit a file you must ensure you
include a notice in the file that you modified (not some other file) and
that the notice must include the date you made the change. I don't see any
provision in the gpl for those notices to be aggregated or expressed via a
changelog but I'm not a lawyer so maybe someone can enlighten me?

Cheers,

[Bug 664115] Re: chroot loop devices stall for extremely long periods

2010-11-03 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: coreutils
+ parted can take a very long time when run within a chroot.

- Copied from the attached script that shows how to reproduce the problem:
+ The issue here is an interface mismatch between udevd and udevadm.

- # If I use parted to create a partition table in a file representing
- # a disk image, it should take milliseconds to do. This seems to be
- # the case when executing these steps directly:
- #
- # use losetup (from live-build) to get a /dev/loopN
- # attach an empty file to the /dev/loopN
- # run a parted script on the empty file to create a partition table
- # release the /dev/loopN
- #
- # However, when executed from within a chroot, this can take multiple
- # minutes, specifically when executing the parted step.
- #
- # Requires:
- # -- A normal maverick desktop system
- # -- a lucid chroot built and available on that desktop system
- # -- apt-get install live-build parted in both the maverick
- #desktop and the chroot
- #
- # To show the problem, run this script. First, without a chroot:
- # $ sudo ./problem.sh
- # then, use a chroot:
- # $ sudo ./problem.sh chroot-directory
- #
- # The first run takes ~100-200 millisec on my system; the second run
- # with chroot takes ~6 *minutes*! And, it does not matter whether or
- # not /dev is bind-mounted to /dev in the chroot -- either way takes
- # about the same amount of time.
+ 'udevadm settle' works by sending a netlink message to the udevd
+ process. However, the magic key (UDEV_MONITOR_MAGIC) udevd uses to
+ communicate w/ udevadm changed between lucid and maverick (presumably
+ due to a non-backwards-compatible interface change). So, if you are
+ running a maverick system and try to run lucid's udevadm in a chroot,
+ there will be no compatible udevd to respond. The long delay is due to a
+ hardcoded timeout default in udevadm - it will wait up to 180s for udevd
+ to signal settle completion.

- ProblemType: Bug
- DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10

- ProcEnviron:
- PATH=(custom, user)
- LANG=en_US.utf8
- SHELL=/bin/bash
- SourcePackage: coreutils
+ I verified this by debootstrapping both a lucid and a maverick chroot on
+ a maverick host. In a pristine host config:
+
+chroot /chroot/lucid udevadm settle- hang
+chroot /chroot/maverick udevadm settle - no hang
+
+ If I modify the host's udev to listen to lucid's UDEV_MONITOR_MAGIC
+ define, I get the inverse results.
+
+ So how does live-helper trigger this? parted has an ubuntu-specific
+ patch that calls 'udevadm settle' after manipulating partitions to avoid
+ races with other applications that might be triggered by partition
+ changes.

 * Please describe the change that is actually being made (ie. the commit
message is pretty descriptive and would be a good start).
 * Please describe how this change fixes this bug.
 * Although the patch being done upstream and upstream history can be a factor
in your regression analysis, the meat and potatoes should be based on the
actual change you're proposing.

Minutes from the Developer Membership Board meeting, 2010-04-27

2010-04-28 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
Chair: Cody Somerville
Present: Søren Hansen, Richard Johnson, Michael Bienia, Colin Watson,
Stéphane Graber
Apologies:

= Action Review =
* persia contacts Angel Abad about his application: Dropping
action for Persia to contact Angel, he will hope to catch him another
time time though.
* persia to make documentation on application notice clearer:
Persia will work on DMB Application Process page further if people
think it's still unclear. Without feedback, he'll leave it alone.
* geser to follow up with Sylvestre Ledru and arrange for the
application to be added to the meeting agenda: Done.

* cjwatson already granted PPU permissions to Leann but forgot to
add Leann to ubuntu-dev team. This is now corrected.

the DMB that will provide upload permissions to Ubuntu kernel
packages.
== Schedule of next meeting (held at UDS?) ==
* ACTION: cjwatson to schedule session at UDS for DMB meeting

= PerPackageUploader: Alessio Igor Bogani =

* Bogani applied for per package upload permissions for linux-rt
and rt-tests.
* LINK: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AlessioIgorBogani/linux-rtPPUApplication
* Bogani's application was declined.
* ACTION: Persia to follow up with TheMuso re: Bogani's application.

Alessio has an interest in the realtime linux kernel and has been
involved in helping maintain the kernel for several releases. However,
due to a lack of endorsements on Alessio's application the DMB was
unable to approve Alessio for PPU permissions at this time. The DMB is
sympathetic to the fact that not many developers are interested in or
comfortable touching these packages and thus not interested in
sponsoring. As such, the DMB will follow up with Alessio and previous
sponsors to help Alessio get his application in order. It is the hope
of the DMB to be able to approve this application in the near future.

= PerPackageUploader: Ara Pulido =

* Pulido applied for per package upload permissions for ldtp, mago
and ubuntu-qa-tools.
* LINK: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AraPulido/PerPackageUploadApplication
* Pulido's application was approved.

Ara Pulido has been maintaining these packages over several releases.
The DMB enthusiastically welcomes her to the Ubuntu development team
by granting her PPU permissions for ldtp, mago, and ubuntu-qa-tools!

= PerPackageUploader: Rodrigo Moya =
* Moya applied for per package upload permissions for
couchdb-glib, evolution-couchdb, libubuntuone,
rhythmbox-ubuntuone-music-store, tomboy, and ubuntuone-client.
* LINK: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RodrigoMoya/PerPackageUploadApplication
* The DMB split this application into three separate applications:
  o couchdb-glib, and evolution-couchdb
  o libubuntuone, rhythmbox-ubuntuone-music-store, and ubuntuone-client
  o tomboy
* Moya's application for couchdb-glib, and evolution-couchdb was approved.
* Moya's application for libubuntuone,
rhythmbox-ubuntuone-music-store, and ubuntuone-client deferred pending
e-mail vote by Hansen and Graber. Application requires two votes to
reach approval threshold.
* Moya's application for tomboy deferred pending e-mail vote by
Hansen and Graber. Application requires one vote to reach approval
threshold.

Rodrigo Moya is both a packager and upstream developer/contributor.
His expertise and experience with couchdb-glib and evolution-couchdb
will be an asset to Ubuntu. The DMB welcomes you!

= UbuntuCoreDeveloper: Brandon Holtsclaw =
* Holtsclaw applied for renewal of his Ubuntu Core Developer membership.
* LINK: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/BrandonHoltsclaw
* Holtsclaw's application was approved.

Brandon Holtsclaw is a long time contributor to Ubuntu and Kubuntu.
After forgetting to hit the renew button when his membership in the
Ubuntu Core Developer team came up for expiration, the DMB is happy to
re-grant Holtsclaw his core developer status. Welcome back!

= Select a Chair for the next meeting =
* Michael Bienia will chair the 11th May meeting.

Cheers,

[Bug 567270] [NEW] [MIR] live-installer

2010-04-20 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: live-installer

Please consider live-installer for inclusion in Main. The live-installer
udeb is used internally at Canonical by multiple business units and by
users in the community who use the live-helper image build creation
tool. By having the udeb in main, the live-helper tool will be able to
automatically fetch the udeb and use it as appropriate.

The live-installer udeb priority is optional (lower than standard) so it
won't be pulled into the normal Ubuntu d-i build.

No important bugs reported against live-installer in Debian[1] or
Ubuntu[2]

[1] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?package=live-installer

gdmflexiserver. However, running gdmflexiserver from the command line
results in me being taken to the gdm login screen so I'm guessing
xscreensaver just needs to be patched to execute the correct command
necessary to work with the new gdm.

[Bug 566913] Re: Clicking 'New Login' reports no longer implemented by gdmflexiserver

2010-04-19 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
Confirmed; 'debian/patches/53_XScreenSaver.ad.in.patch' needs to be
updated to set the new login command as just 'gdmflexiserver' instead of
'gdmflexiserver -l -a -c FLEXI_XSERVER'.

Committed fix to lp:~ubuntu-desktop/xscreensaver/ubuntu

Tormod Volden: If Debian is now using the new GDM, then yes.

[Bug 546485] Re: font rendering regression

2010-04-11 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
Setting back to confirmed because this is a task in Ubuntu and not for
the upstream project - so unless the fix is committed to the branch for
this package, it isn't fix committed. Furthermore, cimi said *maybe*
fixed - thats not conclusive at all.

[Bug 554069] Re: xscreensaver activated on kubuntu after upgrade to lucid

2010-04-10 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
Agreed. Please revert and fix the real issue - that xscreensaver gets
installed for whatever reason on Kubuntu upgrade from Karmic to Lucid.

Furthermore, in the future, changes that you know or suspect will affect
other flavors of Ubuntu should be discussed first on ubuntu-devel before
being made.

[Bug 559546] Re: Totem (-gstreamer) does not show video without tricks

I also experienced this issue in normal Ubuntu. Not sure if the problem
is in gstreamer or Totem.
