[Bug 481819] Re: [i945gm] external monitor hotkey breaks gnome-display-properties, changes theme

2010-12-01 Thread David Hugh-Jones
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

I have a Lenovo X60 with an external docking station, and an external
  monitor attached.

When I dock the laptop, and press Fn+f7 to activate the external
  monitor, the following happens:

  1. My gnome theme is changed from DarkRoom to (I guess?) the standard theme.
  2. The monitor is activated with the laptop screen set up to the left of the
external monitor.
  3. Using gnome-display-properties or xrandr to change the layout, does
nothing and gives no error message.
  4. After logging out and in again, my gnome theme comes back to DarkRoom and
gnome-display-properties works OK.

  1. and 3. are the problem.

I still get the same problem, but this is because my Windows drive is

[Bug 583287] [NEW] windows partition mounted in /windows not /media/windows

2010-05-20 Thread David Hugh-Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I installed a clean Lucid, formatting my previous Karmic partition
during the install. I have a windows XP partition and this was detected
by the installer. After reboot the partition was mounted on /windows, as
it had been previously. The canonical place to mount windows partitions,
is /media/windows according to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Fstab .
Other applications are relying on this being the setup - for example,
see bug #490230.

2010-03-16 Thread David Hugh-Jones
I tested with the live CD and resume still failed - I just got back to
the live CD as if I had not hibernated. I must admit, though, I am a
little puzzled as to how the live CD would handle this. Doesn't
hibernate go to disk? Which part of my hard disk would it use?

In any case, do you want the apport-collect info from the live CD or
from my current system? Or could you use the information from the
other bug I referenced?

far as I can tell, so I don't have much incentive to go through the same
process, with an alpha version, in response to an automated message! Can I
do this from the live CD or would I need to really install lucid on my hard

Re: [Bug 490230] Re: cannot create directory from file dialog

2009-12-02 Thread David Hugh-Jones
Jamie

All well and good, but

(1) this is going to affect everybody who has a Windows partition
mounted on anything but /home. That does not seem very user-friendly.

(2) AFAICS, in apparmor, every different application will have its own
settings. The old way: I could manage permissions in /etc/fstab. (If I
had to change them at all.) The new way: I have to manage permissions
using apparmor, application by application. So I have to learn an
obscure configuration file syntax. And if I get something wrong then I
open my system to vulnerabilities. This is far from Linux for human
beings. It is also unlikely to ensure security. At the moment only I
can write to /windows: will your suggested workaround allow any user
of evince to do it? I don't know. But I'm tempted to apply the
workaround anyway, and ignore your thoughtful warning. Result: worse
security, because user behaviour has not been taken account of.

Cheers
David

[Bug 490230] [NEW] cannot create directory from file dialog

Evince cannot create a directory using the create directory button

directory: permission denied. This does not happen if I create the
directory within /home/, but it happens if I create it in a mounted
windows partition (to which I have write access). This seems to be an

[Bug 481819] [NEW] external monitor hotkey breaks gnome-display-properties, changes theme

2009-11-13 Thread David Hugh-Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

I have a Lenovo X60 with an external docking station, and an external
monitor attached.

When I dock the laptop, and press Fn+f7 to activate the external
monitor, the following happens:

1. My gnome theme is changed from DarkRoom to (I guess?) the standard theme.
2. The monitor is activated with the laptop screen set up to the left of the
external monitor.
3. Using gnome-display-properties or xrandr to change the layout, does nothing
and gives no error message.
4. After logging out and in again, my gnome theme comes back to DarkRoom and
gnome-display-properties works OK.

1. and 3. are the problem.

[Bug 470651] [NEW] window list applet does not show windows from both monitors

2009-11-02 Thread David Hugh-Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Using a fresh Karmic Koala, gnome-panel 1:2.28.0-0ubuntu6. I use two monitors.
When the gnome panel is on one monitor, windows on the other monitor are not
shown in the window list. (I expect the window list to show all windows on all
workspaces, including ones on a separate monitor.) If I move the panel on to
the other monitor, only windows on that monitor are shown. This did not happen
in Jaunty. It happens whether or not I choose the Show windows from all
workspaces option in the window list preferences.

[Bug 399352] [NEW] max_cstate kernel option not preserved after hibernate/resume

2009-07-14 Thread David Hugh-Jones
Public bug reported:

I have added processor.max_cstate=3 to my default grub options, in
order to try and fix the issue described here:

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_high_pitch_noises

After first boot, everything works fine, and
/proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/power and /proc/acpi/processor/CPU1/power
both report max_cstate: 3. But after hibernating and resuming, they
report max_cstate: 8 and my thinkpad X60 starts whining again.

[Bug 399352] Re: max_cstate kernel option not preserved after hibernate/resume

2009-07-14 Thread David Hugh-Jones
One possibly relevant comment: the solution described on the thinkwiki
page, of editing /etc/modprobe.d/options and adding options processor
max_cstate=3, then running update-initramfs, does not work: the
max_cstate is set to 8 as normal.

Re: [Bug 377011] Re: Cannot print documents to Laserjet 4350, via network

2009-06-03 Thread David Hugh-Jones
Using this, the earlier attachment now prints ok. The original bug is
partly fixed; huge files still get created in /var/spool/cups, but
they are manageably large (at least the test case I just tried).
Printing is still slow, though.

This does indeed work. Printing is still slow, but 5 minutes instead

gigabyte. Thank you!

Also, when printing the attached document, after printing 1-2 pages
the printer stops and prints out a page which says
ERROR:

OFFENDING COMMAND:

There's no visible error in the cups error_log, though I can attach it
if you wish. After reinstalling cups via apt-get, the document prints
normally and two-sided printing settings are respected.

It turns out that some documents create huge files in

hour. Eventually, I run out of disk space. Attaching my
/var/log/cups/error_log with debugging turned on. Job 339 is the ugly

[Bug 264864] Re: sound records at wrong speed with USB webcam

2009-04-18 Thread David Hugh-Jones
1. The workaround before doesn't work. Sorry, my mistake with an
intermittent bug.

2. Bug is still present in Jaunty with 2.6.28 kernel.

2. I have finally found out how to turn this bug on and off.

* plug in webcam.
* use gnome-sound-recorder to record something. Play it back. For me, it is at
the wrong speed.
* now, to make the bug go away, access the webcam video with (for example)
gst-launch-0.10 v4l2src ! xvimagesink
* record something again. Now it should be recorded at the right speed.

Relevant sections of /var/log/kern.log, after plugging in the webcam:

Re: [Bug 280710] Re: expo key spreads over multiple monitors

2009-02-19 Thread David Hugh-Jones
It does what it says, but it's still suboptimal. The choice is between
having one wall per monitor, which looks strange, and having a single
big wall with the monitors cutting the workspaces. It would be ideal
to have just one wall, but not to split workspaces over screens. But I
appreciate this is beginning to sound like a RFE, not a bug.

Re: [Bug 273614] Re: can't open pdf documents using evince from firefox

2009-01-22 Thread David Hugh-Jones
No. There's an intermittent bug whereby I can't open *any* documents
from within firefox - I get an error message saying that the helper
application doesn't exist - but that's something different, I think.

[Bug 309314] [NEW] Documents silently fail to print

2008-12-18 Thread David Hugh-Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cupsys

As of today most documents are not printing on my machine. No error message is
given. An example of a pdf that doesn't print is included.
My version of cupsys: 1.3.9-2ubuntu5; my release: Intrepid.

Re: [Bug 307675] Re: deskbar keyboard shortcut displays window then immediately hides it

2008-12-17 Thread David Hugh-Jones
Unless the software changed between our bug reports, maybe better to
keep the report open and find out when this bug happens? E.g. is there
a way to force a rebuild of the Tracker database as per Vianney's
suggestion?
