2021-03-15 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
@PaulHazelden (tenuki57):

I don't see "invalid argument" anywhere in the log. It looks to me that
SANE did not find any scanners. Was your scanner plugged in?

Ooh. That must be a bug in imagemagick. What about:

 convert logo: file.png

or

 convert wizard: file.png

There are lots of non-English users of gscan2pdf and this has never been

Can you file a bug against imagemagick that

 convert rose: file.png

doesn't work?

2020-03-30 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
The command:

 convert rose: /tmp/rose.tif
 ls -l /tmp/rose.tif

should create a TIFF of a rose in the file /tmp/rose.tif

If it doesn't, that explains the problem, because evidently something is
preventing imagemagick from accessing /tmp.

What does the following produce:

 ls -l /etc/alternatives/convert /etc/alternatives/pdftk

?

i.e.

sudo qemu-system-aarch64 \

Having installed the build dependencies,

[Bug 1820987] [NEW] imagemagick-6.q16 built without DJVU

2019-03-20 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe

$ identify test.djvu
test.djvu PPM 70x46 70x46+0+0 8-bit sRGB 9.67KB 0.000u 0:00.000

if I feed identify with a real djvu, it cannot recognise it:

$ convert rose: test.jpg
$ c44 test.jpg test.djvu
$ identify test.djvu
identify-im6.q16: no decode delegate for this image format `DJVU' @
error/constitute.c/ReadImage/504.

imagemagick, properly configured, can read and write djvu images and I

2018-12-05 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
By starting gscan2pdf with the --log=log option, it creates a file
called "log" in the current directory.

gscan2pdf --log=gscan2pdf.log

would create a file called "gscan2pdf.log". Instead of copy-pasting the
output from the terminal, please attach the file.

If setting # pages to 1 works for you, give it a go. Unfortunately,
until I can see more of the log file, I've got no idea what is going
wrong.

[Bug 1800405] Re: garbled pages when using cleanup with deskew

2018-11-13 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
I don't think it is reasonable to expect Ubuntu to update packages in
LTS without security problems, but I am glad that you now have the
latest release working.

I can't reproduce your problem with the clean/unpaper dialogue box. If I
first delete Layout=Double, I can then select #output pages = 1 or more.
If there are 2 or more output pages, I can then select RTL or LTR.

Can you attach an image of the dialogue with Layout=Single, and one with
Layout=Double, please?

That explains things. You are using a 2.5 year-old version. I changed
the compression for lineart images for auto from lzw to png in v1.5.3.

In that case there is no need to try to reproduce the bug and we can
close this.

Thanks for the feedback

[Bug 1800405] Re: garbled pages when using cleanup with deskew

2018-11-07 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
This was a real bug. Before I close it, please confirm which version of
gscan2pdf you are using so that I can tell whether

* the workaround I implemented isn't
* or the version you are using predates the workaround

[Bug 1800405] Re: garbled pages when using cleanup with deskew

2018-10-29 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
Which version of gscan2pdf are you using?

Your problem sounds like a known issue in the LZW compression in
PDF::API2, which gscan2pdf uses to create the PDFs.

Please selected auto or PNG compression when you are saving the PDF.

If that doesn't work around the problem, please attach an example scan,
that when imported, produces a corrupted PDF. Please also attach a log
file, created by starting gscan2pdf with the --log=log option,
reproducing the problem, and quitting.

[Bug 1784168] Re: gscan2pdf 2.1.3 not sends E-Mail (regression)

2018-07-29 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
Yup. I broke the email functionality with yesterday's release. I never
use the email functionality myself, as I always save first and email
afterwards so I have a copy of the document outside my email archive.

Fortunately, the fix is simple. The attached patch fixes things for me.
I'll try to push out a new release ASAP.

[Bug 1784120] Re: Reenable G4 compression in gscan2pdf

2018-07-28 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
The reason G4 worked in the past was that it used tiff2pdf in the
background. I switched to using PDF::API2 for the PDF engine in order to
allow the use of the OCR layer behind the image.

Unfortunately, up to now, PDF::API2 has buggy G4 TIFF support, and so I
disabled the G4 compression option in gscan2pdf.

I have provided patches to the author of PDF::API2 to allow much better
TIFF support, but these have not yet been accepted by the maintainer of
PDF::API2.

In the mean time, which later version of gscan2pdf still do not support
G4, you would find lost of new features and bug fixes if you upgraded
via the PPA.

[Bug 1700733] Re: Page number in preview strip is repeated if scanning quickly

2017-09-14 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
Please start gscan2pdf from the command line with the --log=log option,
reproduce the problem, quit, and attach the log file.

You say you are scanning multiple pages - do you mean singularly with a
flatbed, or with an ADF?

When you say processed, are you talking about postprocessing steps like
clean up or OCR?

This is likely to be caused by a race condition, which might be tricky
to reproduce on a different machine, so the more description you can
give, the better.

[Bug 1651970] Re: gscan2pdf only scans one page

2017-09-10 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
The problem is caused by your backend not having a standard name for the
"document source" option. The standard name is "source". Yours uses
"doc-source". Therefore, because gscan2pdf doesn't recognise you are
using an ADF, it assumes you are using a flatbed, and only allows you to
scan 1 page.

In Edit/Preferences, you should find a check box "allow batch scanning
from flatbed". Ticking this should work around your problem.

Post a screenshot of the first tab of the scan dialog.

[Bug 1527935] Re: Load PDF with more than 1000 pages

2016-01-15 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
I've just fixed this in the uncoming version. However, it exposed a
fundemental problem with the program architecture. Each page is stored
as a temporary file. Perl does not close the file handles for temporary
files until they are out of scope, so on my machine, after around 1000
pages, my machine runs out of file handles.

The medium term solution is to store the data in an SQLite database,
rather than lots of temporary files, but that will require major
surgery.

[Bug 1527935] Re: Load PDF with more than 1000 pages

2015-12-20 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
gscan2pdf uses pdfimages to extract the images from the PDF. It looks to
me that pdfimage can only write 1000 images per call. I assume that the
workaround would be to extract the images in batches of 1000.

Please confirm that having imported pages 1-1000 in the first step, you
can them import pages 1001-1526 in a second step.

If this works, I will:

a. raise a bug against pdfimages
b. code the workaround into gscan2pdf so that it does this internally.

[Bug 844582] Re: Invalid argument when trying to scan

2015-07-07 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
As you have noted, the 001:005 refers to the usb device. However this
can change between boots. Did you reboot between the gscan2pdf/scanimage
and epson sessions?

As you can reproduce this from the commandline with scanimage, I am
transferring this bug to sane-backends, as the bug must be in the
epson/epkowa backend in SANE.

Invalid argument, is simply the error code that libsane returns.
Unfortunately, it does not provide any more information that that by
default.

However, you can run scanimage with debugging turned on. I would ask on
the SANE mailing list for more help.

[Bug 844582] Re: Invalid argument when trying to scan

2015-06-30 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
The fact that you can reproduce this with the scanimage frontend tells
me that this is a problem with Epson SANE backend, and not with
gscan2pdf. If you look at the bottom the last log you posted, you will
see that this is the command gscan2pdf used:

 scanimage --device-name='epkowa:interpreter:001:005' -x 210 -y 297
--adf-mode='Duplex' --resolution='200' --batch --progress --batch-
start=1 --batch-increment=2

Please try this from the command line and confirm that it throws the
same error.

If so, this bug should also be attached to the libsane package, where
the epson and epson2 backends are.

[Bug 1197264] Re: wrong icons in toolbar

2014-10-09 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
Very nice, thank you. You will see your hard work in the next release.

Please confirm that you have licensed your icons under GPL3.

Your point about the new icon is fair. I wonder if the icon is correct,
as it only implies a new document for those who scan each document
separately. I tend to put a whole stack of unrelated sheets in the
feeder, wait for the scanner to do its thing and save the pages in small
selections.

You don't say which version of gscan2pdf you are using, but it must be
quite old, because it was quite a while ago that I was able to fix this
due to a new release of PDF::API2.

I'm upstream. I've fixed it upstream. I've released it. I've made
packages for Ubuntu on my PPA and also uploaded to sid.

Not sure what else I can do to fix it.

[Bug 1217022] Re: Gscan Mysteriously Flips PDFs vertically

2013-09-09 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
This looks like a bug in poppler.

 pdfimages -f 1 -l 1 icse98.pdf x

creates x-000.pbm

 display x-000.pbm

also shows the image flipped vertically.

[Bug 1197264] Re: wrong icons in toolbar

2013-07-05 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
I hadn't read the Gnome HIG[1].

The stock items for gtk+2[2] in some cases aren't very clear.

You imply that I should use gtk-clear for Clear all, but the brush
icon doesn't say clear to me.

I picked the edit icon for attach as PDF to email, as one would be
editting an email. Do you have a better suggestion?

Similarly, there isn't a hand icon to pick for the hand tool.

[Bug 1196849] Re: Failure to load pdf pages

2013-07-03 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
Yes. That is what gscan2pdf does when it imports PDFs.

PDF import support is their to allow gscan2pdf to reimport a PDF that it
has previously written.

Anything else is beyond the scope of a scanner frontend.

If I wanted to fully support PDF, then I'd probably start by forking
evince.

Sorry to disappoint you.

[Bug 630304] Re: Meerkat: gscan2pdf looses first page on multi-page duplex scanning

2013-05-15 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
According to comment #8, the problem only occurs with the scanadf and
scanadf-perl frontends. The problem with the libsane-perl frontend I
think was a different one, which I think was fixed with v1.0.3.

Please try the libsane-perl and scanimage frontends.

Looking at the code, I think that the problem with the scanadf frontend
must have been fixed by the code cleanup in v1.0.0. Please try the
latest version from the PPA.
