Subject: [ubuntu-in] Gutsy problems on Athlon

Guys please help me. suggest me what to do. i installed gutsy on athon 64
2800+. its freezing/ crashing/ becoming totally unresponsive at least half
of the times i start it up. Often it happen when there is are two programs
running like firefox and pidgeon or synaptic. Second problem is that the
desktop menu bar gets discoloured in rectangular patches. colours ranges
from gray to bright blue. at times the patch 'bleeds' down to the open
firefox window.
I am not sure but i have a feeling that if i do clean install from
alternative Cd maybe it will get resolved.
any thoughts welcome.
nanbudh
ps: during installtion i forgot to make one of my disk partitions as the
home directory. please tell me how can i do it now.

Please tell us more about the model of your machine. What motherboard?? Or
brand name etc. What graphics drivers are you using?

I hope I've understood your partition question correctly. I think you
already have a partition and you want to change your home directory to point
to that partition. If that's the case then check out this post.

Are there any more such sessions planned in the near future? I was unable to
join in this one but would like to participate if another one is happening
soon.

All,

A few weeks ago, there was post on the list regarding
UbuntuOpenWeek. Today's session begins with a session
by Jono Bacon on how to be a part of the Ubuntu
Community.

Please follow the link:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpenWeek

to know more.

Make sure, you *READ* the rules and *FOLLOW* them. Top
posting and over-quoting have affected this list :P

One (may be I) could also create a page on the
Ubuntu-in wiki on the same lines. However, it depends
if I attend it.

Oh, BTW, here's a quick guide on how to attend.

Applications - Internet - Xchat
Connect to the freenode network (Follow the link for a
quick start: http://www.xchat.org/docs/start/)

Join the channel #ubuntu-classroom (where you'll
learn) adn #ubuntu-classroom-chat (where you can ask
question by adding a prefix QUESTION to the
message).

You should be connected to the channels, if everything
is in place. :)

Note, all discussions are *should* be posted to
#ubuntu-classroom-chat.

Time: 2030 hrs IST. (i.e. 08:30 pm, TODAY)

Thank you very much for the information Roshan. I admit it was my mistake I
should've looked at the url first. I'm new here but I'm trying to learn the
etiquettes of the mailing list. So excuse me if I make some mistakes.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Has anyone reviewed Gusty

2007-10-20 Thread Manu Mahajan
I downloaded and installed gutsy i386 image. I have an HP tx1000 tablet
which has AMD turion x2. This particular laptop is known to be difficult to
configure and there is a huge thread dedicated to it on Ubuntu forums
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=442483

I had to do a lot of tweaks just to get the live cd to boot - a handful of
kernel parameters but this was the case with feisty as well so I was aware
of what to do. Still I would have expected some of the issues to be resolved
in gutsy.

My first impression has been not so good. I am unable to shutdown the system
cleanly, the system seems pretty slow and non reactive to inputs, the
touchscreen doesn’t work (it was recognized by default in feisty but was
unusable as it was impossible to calibrate)

But I have been able to get the wireless working with ndiswrapper. So at
least one thing works as expected. Also I get write access to my ntfs
windows partitions out of the box which is cool.

A lot of these issues might get solved as I fine tune my system – install
nvidia drivers and configure x, get the right balance of kernel parameters
etc. So I am still hopeful. Seems like it’s going to be a fun weekend ;)

I will post of my results and steps as I get more things working.

Manu

I downloaded the amd desktop iso torrent. it got done in less than one and a
half on BSNL dataone  business3000(512 kbps). I ran the live cd jus a few
moments ago. looks good. faster than 6.06 live cd and ofcourse it would be
faster on install.
could not configure ethernet connection for my home internet(the properties
button was disabled.should it be?)
The colours are bright.
if i get time i shall do an install tomorrow or day after. i shall write my
experiences.
BTW has anyone else downloaded the iso? please share.

Go to the list options page[1], put in your email address, your
password, and then sign in, set the acknowledgment option to `No' and
`receive your own posts' to `yes'

Greetings,

P.S. You can also navigate to the options page if you hit the url that
goes out with every mail posted on the list.

Re: [ubuntu-in] ubuntu India website redesign

2007-10-19 Thread Manu Mahajan
Hi community

I've just joined. I'd like to help out. I can contribute in anything related
from testing, coding, configuring or managing servers, writing
documentation(in Hindi or English) etc. I'm a bit pressed for time for a few
days. Let's say a week, but after that I'll have a lot of hours to spare. I
can still do some QA for this drupal install while my code is compiling ;)

Let me know.

Manu

running on my hosting by today evening. Details later...
* Anyone else, apart from VK and me, who wants to help us out with testing
it, ping back!
Thats it.

Oh and I also have a fast server with lots of available space and bandwidth
if required. I have shell access and can install anything I want. php,
mysql, java are running.
