[Bug 1798961] Re: Random unrecoverable freezes on Ubuntu 18.10
The workaround from #42 seems to make the hard lockup less frequent for me, but it's not completely gone. I still experience a complete freeze from time to time. It's completely aleatory, and it doesn't seem related to the workload, although I suspect that it's related to powersaving. >From my experience, the probability of being hit by the freeze increases around a standby or resume event, or around plugging / unplugging the laptop. When the hardlock occurs, the only thing I can do is to turn off the laptop by long-pressing the power button. I can't switch to a virtual tty, I can't reach the machine via SSH, REISUB doesn't work, etc. Upon restarting, there's absolutely nothing in the kernel logs that could be remotely related to the lockup. In fact, many times the last entry in `journalctl -b -1` is from several minutes *before* the lockup. I suspected of a hardware problem for a while, but the fact that every hardware test I've run finds nothing, coupled with the fact that the frequency of the freeze has *definitely* decreased with successive Ubuntu/kernel/mesa versions convinced me otherwise. My specs: - Lenovo ThinkPad T470s - Intel Core i5-7200U (Kaby Lake) - Intel HD Graphics 620 (rev 02) - Currenly on Ubuntu 18.10, kernel 4.18.0-17-generic, although for me this bug has been present ever since Ubuntu 17.10, kernel 4.13 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1798961 Title: Random unrecoverable freezes on Ubuntu 18.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1798961/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I've manually applied the patch proposed in comment #22 to my Ubuntu 18.10 desktop, and I can confirm that it fixes the issue for me. [Bug 985028] Re: nm-applet stops displaying VPN connections
It seems to be related to the network-manager-applet UI, and not the underlying service/infraestructure. Restarting network-manager service doesn't restore the VPN menu items. And while the applet is broken, you can still turn the VPN connections up and down with nmcli. In that case the applet will reflect the status in its icon (with/without the little padlock), but the VPN submenu will remain empty. [Bug 235128] Re: epiphany
It seems that the apturl protocol-handlers are not added to the default preferences, so when clicking on an aptURL, epiphany doesn't know how to handle it (and opens an ugly dialog box asking the user to choose an application). Is there a reason to release the fix for Intrepid (the beta version of Ubuntu) before fixing Hardy which not only is the stable release, but a LTS one? I've just found that the way .desktop files are handled in Gnome is configured in /usr/share/applications/defaults.list (and can be overriden in a per-user basis editing ~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list). [Bug 81581] Re: Bogofilter plugin doesn't work with bogofilter-sqlite
I tried to reproduce this issue with Gutsy Bibbon Tribe 5 LiveCD. The issue regarding bogofilter vs. bogofilter-sqlite is resolved: I enabled the Universe repository, installed bogofilter-sqlite, uninstalled bogofilter, and checked that the proper binary is created in /usr/bin/bogofilter, and that Evolution still works. Anyway, the Evolution junk filtering in Gutsy is totally broken (at least from the LiveCD). Trying to test this specific issue, I was bitten by these bugs: * Gutsy installs bogofilter by default. In Evolution, under Edit - Preferences - Plugins, BOTH bogofilter AND spamassassin are enabled by default, even though spamassassin is not installed (see bug #950337) * Even if bogofilter is enabled in the Plugins menu, the junk filter won't work until the user go to Edit - Preferences - Mail Preferences - Junk tab, and selects a Default junk plugin. I think this is an Ubuntu specific issue (see #127530). It's not very clear the double configuration (both Plugins AND Preferences) needed to get the junk filter working. * Even if there's no Default junk plugin selected in the preferences, Evolution lets the user mark messages as junk / not-junk, which is totally silly because it's not learning. -- Bogofilter plugin doesn't work with bogofilter-sqlite https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/81581 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 112659] Re: suspend to ram won't work anymore after upgrading to feisty
I can confirm that suspend to ram works again in Gutsy Tribe 5. I have some (minor?) issues after resume: * Sometimes (but not always) g-p-m will pop the notification telling me that the computer failed to suspend, which is wrong. * Sometimes (but not always) I get a black screen, and I have to swhich back-and-forth from virtual screen 7 to a text console to get video again. * The sound is muted, always. * After resume, something with the wireless subsystem ends up totally messed up, and I can no longer connect to my wireless network. ... but I assume all of those are not kernel bugs, and have to do more with hal and/or the suspend/resume scripts or something. -- suspend to ram won't work anymore after upgrading to feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112659 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Brian, thanks for your comments. Last time I checked (with Feisty LiveCD, actually), this kind of thing couldn't be tested with the LiveCD, because suspend and hibernation were disabled. I can too confirm this on Feisty. - Deleted files are moved (correctly) to ~/.Trash on my home partition. - Tha trash applet is always empty. I don't understand why this is assigned to gnome-applets. If I navigate to trash: with Nautilus, I see the same behavior (directory empyt). Doesn't this have to do with gnome-vfs? [Bug 89983] Re: Feisty reports suspend failed after resuming from suspend
I can confirm this, on my Dell Inspiron 640m. As soon as the laptop enters sleep mode (display, disks, fans, everything shutdowns ok, and the power led starts to blink), it wakes up again, and after unlocking the screen, a g-p-m alert informs me that the computer couldn't suspend. This is some kind of regression, because it worked as expected width Edgy. Suspend to disk on the other hand works ok. [Bug 112659] suspend to ram won't work anymore after upgrading to feisty
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20 After successfully upgrading to Feisty from Edgy on my laptop, suspend to ram doesn't work anymore. Suspend to disk works (and it's much more reliable than in Edgy), but suspend to ram never works. Whenever I start the suspend process (either by pressing Fn-Esc, lid- closing on battery power or from g-p-m), it seems to go well; screen blanks, wi-fi stops, fan stops, and power led starts to blink, but after one or two seconds, the laptop wakes up by itself. Upon unlocking the screen, I get an alert from g-p-m telling me that the computer failed to suspend. My specs are: Dell Inspiron 640m, Ubuntu 7.04 with all the updates as of may 5th. $ uname -a Linux joyride 2.6.20-15-generic #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 07:36:31 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux I skimmed through many bugreports here at launchpad, and on Ubuntuforums, but none of the problems reportes seem to be like mine. The closest bug I could find is #95594, where the OP also reports that the laptop wakes up immediately. But he's reporting other issues after the restart, which I don't have. The strange thing is that as per some reviews in LaptopTestingTeam, and my own experience with Edgy on this very same hardware, suspend to ram should work fine. ** Affects: linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- suspend to ram won't work anymore after upgrading to feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112659 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 81581] Bogofilter plugin doesn't work with bogofilter-sqlite
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution I'm not sure if this should be reported as an Evolution bug or a bogofilter one. I installed bogofilter in my laptop (with a fresh install of Edgy) in order to use it with Evolution. I don't know exactly how, I ended up with bogofilter-sqlite, the sqlite version, whose binary is /usr/bin/bogofilter-sqlite. I spent hours trying to find out why on earth Evolution was ignoring bogofilter altogether (i.e., mi ~/.bogofilter/wordlist.db won't be touched even when I marked mail as junk manually), until I found out running Evolution from the command line that it was expecting to find /usr/bin/bogofilter. I made a link from bogofilter-sqlite to bogofilter and everything seems to work, but: - Evolution should inform with an alert, warning or something that a regular user can see that a file is not being found, instead of failing silently; - Either Evolution's bogofilter plugin should be smarter about which program to run (i.e., it should know that bogofilter-sqlite exists), or if bogofilter-sqlite is meant to be a replacement for bogofilter, the installer should create the corresponding link (actually, I can do man bogofilter but not man bogofilter-sqlite for instance, so it seems that not putting a link from bogofilter-sqlite to bogofilter is a bug anyway) ** Affects: evolution (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Bogofilter plugin doesn't work with bogofilter-sqlite https://launchpad.net/bugs/81581 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Same here. Mono crashed after searching with beagle through deskbar-applet. The search (beagle) was ok. I closed the beagle search results window, and after a couple of secons, apport popped up. For the record, I noticed that in Edgy, beagled wakes up and start crowling every time the CPU is idle. [Bug 67368] Re: Upgrade from Dapper to Edgy failed because xutils could not be found
Unfortunately it's not. I've already completed the upgrade. I think the problem was caused by some package that could not be downloaded (look at the end of main.log), which in turn broke the transaction that the update-manager had precalculated. I started it again, it downloaded a few more packages (which seems to confirm my idea), and then it crashed again, because for some unknown reason the initscript for lighttpd returned exit status 1 when the pre-removal script run it. That's because for some reason the /etc/init.d/lighttpd script returned 1 trying to stop the service. At that point, I decided to gave up on update-manager and get my hands dirty. I edited /etc/init.d/lighttpd, and added an exit 0 as the first line. After that, and a few aptitude update, aptitude dist-upgrade and aptitude -f install, I finished the upgrade. So, to sum it up: - it seems that update-manager doesn't get notified if a package can not be downloaded (this I think is a bug) - maybe there's a bug in the lighttpd pre-removal script; or smething broke in between (lighttpd was starting/stopping normally before the update), but the fact is that update-manager could not deal with it (and I think that's a pitty but it's fine... a pre-removal script can fail for a thousand reasons, and could not be ignored that easy.) [Bug 58424] Re: Can't calculate the upgrade with unofficial mesa/compiz packages
Hi Michael, I run exactly into the same issue. My compiz entry in sources.list was already commented out... and in fact, I thought I was running only official packages (I did a downgrade from the compiz ones a couple of months ago, when I run into an ugly font problem). Running $ sudo dpkg -r --force-depends libgl1-mesa libgl1-dev libgl1-dri libglu1-mesa libglu1-mesa-dev mesa-common-dev mesa-utils $ sudo apt-get install -f solved the problem, but I lost ubuntu-desktop and x-window-system-core in the process. After that, update-manager could do its job, and now It's happy downloading all the Edgy packages. Given the fact that MANY users have been playing with GLX and compiz, I think it would be really nice if the update-manager could learn to deal with this problem for the final release. Otherwise, I'm afraid the mailing lists and forums will be flooded with messages regarding this issue. -- Can't calculate the upgrade with unofficial mesa/compiz packages https://launchpad.net/bugs/58424 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
