Hi Scott,

I'm not sure if this will help, but the only thing you didn't mention
was changing the group and user of /srv .. If I remember correctly /var/www
is www-data:www-data for group and user.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Least painful way to upgrade 12.10?

2014-06-18 Thread Mark Garrow
Except upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04 is one shot. You don't have to go
through the various interim releases. One thing to remember, you have to
uninstall nvidia graphic drivers prior to the upgrade.

 14.04.

Due to this advice, I'm going to leave our home and office machines as
they are for as long as I can, since they are all working sweetly now and
the thought of reinstalling all of the apps, programs, device drivers all
over again is daunting, to say the least.

Almost all of the various forum respondents to this concern seem to agree
that the recommended step-by-step upgrades invites glitches with each
step, and those glitches compound as you work your way up. Clean install
sounds great when it's done, but who wants to go through that when your
system is working just as it should be?

install a new one for the clean install. That way you are guaranteed a

2011-12-09 Thread Mark Garrow
Ok.. Sorry for the late reply. I initiated the apport-collect 898430
and gave launchpad permission for 1 day to collect information. In the
terminal window I did that command I see the following:

Created new window in existing browser session.
Package kdeplasma-addons not installed and no hook available, ignoring
QPixma;::handle(): Pixmap is not an X11 class pixmap

From looking at the above output it appears that I may need to install
kdeplasma-addons. This I did with no change in how the calculator
widget is missbehaving.

Any other information that I can provide please let me know.

I'm using the English/US locale.. I tried numerous times to use calc

works.. Go Figure! So looks like now we could mark this bug as fixed /

[Bug 891425] [NEW] Dash can't find calculator when when searching

2011-11-16 Thread Mark Garrow
Public bug reported:

When trying to launch the calculator that comes as part of the basic
install of 11.10, I hit the super key and type calc or calculator
and it finds nothing.. Having used Ubuntu for several years I knew the

app. For anyone fairly fresh to Ubuntu they would never know to type
gcalc to find the calculator.

[Bug 891427] [NEW] Evince's behavoir has changed, now more cumbersome

2011-11-16 Thread Mark Garrow
Public bug reported:

Open the current file manager in 11.10. Hit F3 to split the screen.
Make sure breadcrumbs are visible along the top of the window. In the
split pane that *doesn't* have focus, try to change the directory up one
level by clicking on the bread crumbs. It won't work.. you have to have
focus in that pane to actually change the directory there. Previous
Ubuntu releases did not behave that way.

Evince.. Filemanager or filemanager also brings up nothing.

[Bug 607560] Re: jbd2 writing block every 5 - 10 seconds, preventing disk spin-down and making noise

2011-05-09 Thread Mark Garrow
I recently had a Seagate SATA 300+gig drive fail. Since it was in
warranty I sent it in and apparently it was affected by bad firmware
that Seagate had updated for that drive. However there' no real way to
check if your drive needs a firmware update unless you contact them. My
drive was sent to data recovery for free (because it was in warranty)
with the determination that it was totally unrecoverable because the
drive had essentially self destructed. Way to much particulate matter
the destroyed the platters.

Since there seems to be a pattern with Seagate.. I'd check to see if the
firmware needs updating. No idea if this will fix the problem or not
that everyone is experiencing. When my drive started failing I would
notice excessive writes and system slowdowns up to the point where it
would spin/access continuously. This was on a 3.5 drive desktop
mounted.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Starting Out w/ Linux

2011-03-13 Thread Mark Garrow

Best article by the FSF ever, I found this just yesterday:

 http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/practical.html

Essentially, why should you be looking for better software if you are still
in chains? Why should anyone postpone or altogether ignore their struggle for
freedom in order to be more productive within the society that took away
 their freedom?

I find the FSF philosophy articles are generally more succinct than I can be,
so I often link people to them when they start in about the difference
between free and gratis, and other common misunderstandings.

Sorry.. although Stallman is a very outspoken person, this article
(although that's a relaxed term for what it is) really doesn't mean
bupkiss to the masses.. they're going to wonder what those statements
actually mean to them personally in every day (to day) uses of their
computer. It leaves a person wondering what is actually at stake with
non-free software. There's no answer to that in the link which I think
would be paramount in understanding the philosophy.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Starting Out w/ Linux

2011-03-12 Thread Mark Garrow
Seidos... I was just doing some cad for a friends dash on his RV9
airplane.. Other than QCad I found DraftSight which has a community
edition and a pro paid version that adds just a couple of things.

On the other points.. the FOSS philosophy might work more now that most
everyone are looking to save a buck here and there. On the saving $'s
front, many have machines that are older, slow, riddled with (you name
it) and don't have the money to buy a new machine and/or can't find the
reinstall disks or the money to pay anyone to do it for them. That is
an opportunity for FOSS and Ubuntu. Although, admittedly difficult to
find these people individually, when you do they're often open to the
idea with some hesitation.

It's tough to overcome a windows/mac user that has a specific program
that they just have to have.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Upgrade question for the group

2010-05-21 Thread Mark Garrow
Currently you can reinstall to the latest.. It's easier if you have a
separate /home partition.. or wait until the official upgrade via Upgrade
Manager is available.. it's been a while so I don't know why it's not
showing up.. perhaps a setting you have.. Maybe someone else can shed some
light on that.

[Bug 583437] [NEW] Find by Name dropdown behavoir and default

2010-05-20 Thread Mark Garrow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kpackagekit

Kubuntu 9.10 x64
KpackageKit

This report is for augmentation to KPackageKit and it's usability.

Most new users (and some experienced users) search for packages by
description. The current default is Find by Name. This works fine
but most users don't know the actual name of the package. The default
search should be Find by Description or a user should be able to set
the default by having KPackageKit remember the last choice for this
option.

The other concern regarding this drop down box (spinbox?). Currently a
user can mouse point at Find by name/description and the area appears
to be selected but there is no method of expanding the choice box by
clicking on the entire field. You must click the little down arrow next
to the drop down box in order to make the change. I suggest leaving the
arrow where it is but include the Description as an area to click to
drop the choice box down.

If this isn't clear please notify me and I'll elaborate.

** Affects: kpackagekit (Ubuntu)

[Bug 378155] Re: twinkle no longer appears in KDE system tray

2010-05-14 Thread Mark Garrow
This bug I also have. AMD 64 Kubuntu 9.10.
Another odd behavior I've seen is when it loads the window opens, becomes
invisible except for a fairly transparent frame that gets stuck to an
existing open window of another application. This may be a plasma thing I
don't know. I have to manually kill twinkle and reload it to hopefully get it
back to normal.

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Ubuntu Tri-Fold Source Files

2010-03-28 Thread Mark Garrow
I can't tell because I haven't really looked close enough, but on the front of
the brochure is Ubuntu in the new Ubuntu font? Should it be for
consistency?

Also, under Join the Community / Get Help: should we mention the IRC
channels and the relevant server? Granted many won't know what that is but
others will. Perhaps with a corresponding link to the wiki on IRC. There
seems to be enough room to do it.

In the Connecting to WiFi: section on the first line there is a misspelling..
networks instead of networs.

Section Thumdrives / Mediaplayers in Ubuntu: Thumdrives should be spelled
Thumbdrives.

In the Do I need to defrag or section.. nearly no virus has two
issues.. bad english, and virus should be plural. Nearly no implies there
are viruses (viri?) but then we state that we don't need a scanner.. There
should be a better way to state that.

Best,

Mark Garrow

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Asking For Opinion: Leadership Appointment Process

2010-03-09 Thread Mark Garrow
+1

On 3/8/2010 9:23 PM, Jono Bacon wrote:
 Hi All,

To those of you who don't know me, I am Jono Bacon and I am the Ubuntu
Community Manager, now residing in the Easy Bay in sunny California. :-)

Aside from just being part of the team, I have also been helping to
resolve some conflict that has been happening in the team. I have had
some calls with Neal and Grant and spoken to many of you to gather your
input about the team and this conflict.

Today I had a conference call with Neal and Grant and both identified
that a key issue is that sometimes unresolved issues are left open and
not resolved. Typically in most LoCo teams in these scenarios the leader
will help unblock and bring closure to these issues. While Neal is the
leader Ubuntu California, there was some uncertaintly in our call as to
 how formally recognized this is.

I made a suggestion in the call, but Grant, Neal and I all agreed that
we should not move forward with the suggestion without gathering
feedback from the team as to whether it is needed. As such, I would like
to ask each of you to provide feedback on the following suggestion -
some of you will want to mail me your feedback privately, and some will
be happy to reply to the list. Whatever method you choose: please
summarize *your* view, and not the view of someone who has asked you to
provide feedback one way or the other. The aim of this is for me to get
a barometer of opinion for this proposal.

 This is it:

I recommend we have a leadership appoint process that works like this:

  * With Neal already the leader of the team, starting from April
1st 2010 he would start a formally recognized one year term of
leadership (he would be grandfathered in).
  * In March 2011 a leadership appointment process will happen
that works like this:
o there will be an invitation for people to nominate
themselves for leadership. There will be a standard wiki
template used for people to produce their case for
leadership and others will provide testimonials.
o a meeting will be scheduled and nominations will be
discussed, there will then be a vote using a voting tool
  to identify the leader.
o if there is a draw or some conflict surrounding the
vote, the LoCo Council will evaluate the case and pick a
  leader.

What do you think? Please vote with:

  * +1 - you agree with the above proposal.
  * -1 - you disagree with the above proposal.

Again, feel free to provide feedback privately to me or publicly on the
 list.

 Thanks!

   Jono

[Bug 521562] [NEW] Kubuntu 9.10 Network-manager ignores static ip with auto connect on

2010-02-13 Thread Mark Garrow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

There are lots of similar bugs but with differences. I'm running
Kubuntu 9.10 and have manually configured a static ip address using
Network-Manager. When I click the network manager icon it shows my
static route available to activate. Activating it works and as long as
I leave the machine on it retains the static IP address. On reboot
network manager uses the default Auto eth0 dhcp connection despite
having the Static connection set to auto connect.

There does not seem to be a way to graphically turn off or disable the
default auto eth0 dhcp connection permanently (until manually
reactivated.)

My expectation of network manager is to honor the Auto Connect tic box
on whatever connection I've manually set to automatically connect to.

It seems this issue has been around since Breezy. My logic might be
flawed but I have to ask. is it possible to add a line in the
Manage Connections section of Network manager that would represent the
default auto connect to dhcp on eth0 or wireless and give us a tic box
to turn off that connection when enabling our own static configuration?

[Bug 513595] [NEW] Switching from DHCP profile to Static results in no connection

2010-01-27 Thread Mark Garrow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plasma-widget-networkmanagement

Kubuntu 9.10 64bit on AMD
Package version - plasma-widget-networkmanagement 0.9~svn1029789+ag1-0ubuntu1
(amd64)

I created a static profile using the plasma-widget-networkmanagement tool
After switching from the default DHCP profile to static my connection to the
internet was down.
After much wrangling I discovered if I opened a terminal and sudo ifup eth0 the
connection would be established..
I have set the static profile to connect automatically but have not tested this

[Bug 513595] Re: Switching from DHCP profile to Static results in no connection

2010-01-27 Thread Mark Garrow
On reboot even with the Static profile, Auto eth0 with DHCP was the
profile that loaded.. I expected the Static profile to load for 2
reasons.. it was the last profile loaded on reboot and it was marked
'Auto'.

Unfortunately Auto eth0 is not listed in the profiles to disable auto
load..

[Bug 217571] Re: xsane only scans as root

2010-01-20 Thread Mark Garrow
Brother has new instructions and a .deb for Ubuntu. It's not the
easiest thing to wade through their instructions to piece everything
together for a distro and for each function. I recently did a fresh

and scanning work like a charm. I've yet to get the faxing to work.
I've attached step by step instructions as to what I did to get things

should note that in Brothers instructions there is mention that Ubuntu

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] KDE/Kubuntu

2009-11-22 Thread Mark Garrow
I had thought that the edubuntu project was merged or the packages are
available for the standard Kubuntu install. As for a minuscule 4 dell
setup, check out the link. It describes how to take a single computer
and create multiple stations. This could effectively make your
minuscule 4 dell setup turn into a 40 station setup. You mileage may
vary :) ...
http://support.userful.com/wiki/index.php/How_to/UMX/Creating_a_Multi-Seat_Ubuntu_Linux_Desktop

just food for thought!

Re: [Ubuntu-US-CA] Color CD cover copies

2009-05-15 Thread Mark Garrow
Although the minimum quantity is way more than you need for this event,
there will be extras for other events.. www.myprinteasy.com offers 500
Letter Head letter sized pages in color for $90 on premium 70lb smooth
stock. You can use scribus to design the cd covers or move the current
design there and then output in cmyk at 300 dpi for printing..

I've used them for marketing postcards and they are very good. 5 day
turn-a-round for shipping ground and free pickup if there is someone in
the area.

Hi Neill,

Welcome. A couple of the best places to get help are on the IRC
channels. You can install xchat from Add/Remove or from Synaptic to
connect to the channels.. The server address is irc.freenode.net. Once
there type /join #ubuntu and/or /join #ubuntu-california. The
ubuntu channel will link you with over 1,000 people asking questions and
giving answers in real time.. The ubuntu-california channel is another
good spot for live QA with most of the Calif. members logged in a one
point or another throughout the day. Another good spot is
www.ubuntuforums.org.

[Bug 316843] Re: Evolution Hangs while retreiving email

2009-01-14 Thread Mark Garrow
After initiating a backtrace yesterday, of course, evolution behaved
well.. However, this morning I started it using GDB and within an hour
and a half forgot the password to one of my accounts (gmail). It was
difficult to tell if it was Evo's fault or gmail's. It wasn't another 5
minutes from that when Evo froze. Backtrace done and attached.. I hope
it has some valuable info for diagnosis.

[Bug 316843] [NEW] Evolution Hangs while retreiving email

2009-01-13 Thread Mark Garrow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-data-server

On first start Evolution is able to pull emails from my several accounts
(pop servers). Several of these addresses are hosted by my ISP and one
is with gmail. After letting Evolution stay loaded it automatically
checks for new emails every 10 minutes or so. This functions for a
while then forgets passwords and asks for them again. Sometimes just
for one account, sometimes for all the accounts. After re-entering the
password(s) it MAY pull new email or MAY ask for the password(s) again.
Then as Evo is checking messages it never finishes seeming to hang
during the process. Closing Evo w/ Ctrl+q or clicking the x results
in nothing. I have to force quit.

Starting Evo from terminal the vast majority of the messages received
are ...

(evolution:7463): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment
with non-zero page size is deprecated

But I also see..

and

else you need for reference please advise what and how to obtain it.

[Bug 236670] Re: vym xml error

2008-12-30 Thread Mark Garrow
Having had problems with Vym and the notes attachments I came across
this bug report. When hovering over any of the post in this bug I get a
popup saying that Nathan Handler has uploaded version 1.12.x to universe
on 11/17/08. After refreshing my Intrepid repositories and looking at
universe I only see version 1.10.x.

As a note on the error itself I followed the instruction posted earlier
on removing a specific line to restore the ability to load the map file.
The specific line menitoned was in 7 locations in the map I was trying
to load. I suspect that each branch or sub-branch that has a note
attached contain this line.

I too would like to voice my desire for a backport to intrepid.

[Bug 301752] [NEW] Alacarte changes ApplicationsAccessories menu to Utilities

2008-11-24 Thread Mark Garrow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alacarte

First, I'm not sure that this bug is part of Alacarte but it's the closest
reference I can figure out.
I upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid by doing a fresh install but I retained my
original /home partition/drive from hardy. After the install I noticed that my
menu item ApplicationsAccessories had disappeared. All the items that should
be in Accessories had been moved to ApplicationsUtilities. As far as I can
tell there is no way to rename a menu folder as an easy fix. It's just strange
behavior that didn't happen on a totally fresh install of Intrepid within vBox.

[Bug 197589] Re: Numeric keypad no longer works after upgrade

2008-09-28 Thread Mark Garrow
wheezer.. a few posts above mention a couple of things you have to do.
Maybe you just didn't mention them all when listing what you had done.
If you didn't do them it might be worth doing them in order, and then
test and see if it returns. This was posted by Blempis.

Solution (which is surely not intuitive) was this already mentioned one:
 1. Go to System Preferences Accessibility Keyboard Accessibility
   2. Select [x] Enable keyboard accessibility features
   3. Go to the tab Mouse Keys and deselect [ ] Enable keyboard accessibility
features.
