default backup solution

2019-03-29 Thread Matej Kovačič
Hi,

as I understand, default backup application in Ubuntu is DejaDup.
Unfortuately, DejaDup is by my experience not very reliable and has
quite terrible support.

By my opinion this is a serious problem, since Ubuntu needs reliable and
quality built-in backup solution.

My suggestion is to replace DejaDup with BorgBackup:
https://borgbackup.readthedocs.io/

It has also quite nice GUI, called Vorta: https://github.com/borgbase/vorta

Both are working on Linux and MacOS, BorgBackup is also supported on ARM
devices.

Vorta is licensed under GPL3, however BorgBackup is not GPL'ed, but has
an open licence and using it in Ubuntu should't be a problem (and in
case of any ambiguities, you can at least try to talk to authors).

I would be glad if you would consider this option.

Regards,

Matej

[Bug 382652] [NEW] No ringtone for incoming calls

2009-06-02 Thread Matej Kovačič
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

When receiving incoming call from my SIP provider, I get a windows with
options to accept or refuse the call, but no ring tone.

Under settings there is enabled an option for tones when receiving
incoming calls. Sound files are under /usr/share/sounds/ekiga
(eing.wav), but cannot be played with totem, but plays good with
mplayer.

I had PulseAudio sound system enabled and also tried with ALSA, but it
is the same.

However, Totem produces the following error:
totem ring.wav

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.

  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line

[Bug 302917] [NEW] Error in bttv kernel modules

2008-11-27 Thread Matej Kovačič
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.27-10-generic

I have Pinnacle PCTV Studio/Rave tunerja (card=39). Under Ubuntu 8.04 I
had in V /etc/rc.local:

rmmod bt878
rmmod bttv
modprobe bt878

I was using kdetv, and TV tuner was working fine.

However, after upgrade to 8.10 (kernel is 2.6.27-8-generic and
2.6.27-10-generic), TV card is not working anymore. When I start kdetv,
I got this error:

Unable to grab video.
Video display is not possible with the current plugin configuration. Try
playing with the configuration options of the V4L.

Is there a problem with some kernel driver?

This bug is duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdetv/+bug/297805, but I think
it is a kernel module problem, not KTV problem. Under
2.6.24-21-generic, TV card is working just great.

[Bug 240643] [NEW] Error strings in local languages

Public bug reported:

When user gets some error in local (non-english) language and wants to
use Google to find the explanation or solution, he or she can have
problems, because on forums are mostly cited errors in english language.

So it would be nice to have an easily accessible web based service to
enter any string from any ubuntu package and get the orginal english
string.

I believe this is not hard to implement. It can be implemented in
connection with Rosetta, however, link to htis service should be clearly
visible on Ubuntu website or it should be some simple application in
Ubuntu to do such search.

[Bug 148003] Re: mounting Luks encrypted USB-HDD does not work reliably

2008-01-16 Thread Matej Kovačič
There is another problem with Gnome-mount.

As we know, LUKS encrypted partitions can be mounted with password
(passphrase) or with key file. When I connect LUKS formatted device,
Gnome-mount only asks me for a passphrase. There is no option for
mounting device with keyfile.

Usually majority of devices is protected with passphrases (or with
keyfile AND passphrase), but it could be protected with keyfile only.

It would be nice to add a possibility of mounting LUKS partition with
keyfile from Gnome mounter.

[Bug 177410] When logging off from wireless network, DNS settings remain the same

Public bug reported:

I have two wireles routers, Fonera and Linsys. When I connect to

However, there is a problem how to connect back to wired connection.
Unfortunately, there is no way to disconnect from wireless connection,
except shutting off wireless networking. But it I do this and fall back
to eth0 (wired connection), DNS settings remain the same as were in
wireless connection.

Another problem is that if I set eth0 and eth1 in roaming mode . only
then I see option to connect to VPN networks (I have Open VPN applet

only see Manual configuration if I click to nm-applet.

[Bug 138405] Re: Eduroam support in Network Manager

2007-12-19 Thread Matej Kovačič
Unfortunately it cannot be closed. I tried to connect to Eduroam and on
one computer worked fine (but only once). However, on other computers it
is not working (I tried three of them). It is working if I connect
manually, but not from Network Manager.

[Bug 156561] Enigmail does not cache passphrase anymore

2007-10-24 Thread Matej Kovačič
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded to Gutsy from Feisty and I am using Thunderbird 2.0.0.6
(20071022) with Enigmail version 0.95.0 (20070830).

When I go to OpenPGP - Preferences and select Basic settings and enter
Remember passphrase for 80 minutes of idle time, this has no effect.

When I go to GPG encrypted message for a first time, I have to enter
passphrase. Then I select another - unencrypted - message and then the
first (encrypted) message again. I am asked to enter passphrase again.

It is quire nasty to enter passphrase EACH time sou select GPG encrypted

[Bug 156285] LUKS partition mounted to /dev/mapper, but not to /media

2007-10-23 Thread Matej Kovačič
Public bug reported:

I have several LUKS encrypted USB external hard drives. Under Feisty, I
pluged them into the USB and after a while got Gnome pop-up window
asking me for password. When provided right password, removable LUKS
device was mounted in /media/...

Sometimes in Feisty this did't worked (encrypted partitions work
inconsistently, sometimes they mount and sometimes not), but I was
unable to find a final solution - however, I was able to manually mount
/dev/mapper/luks_x device.

Today I upgraded to Gutsy and downloaded all patches - but automounting
of /dev/mapper/luks_x devices does not work anymore. When I plug in
USB external drive, I got Gnome pop-up window asking me for password.
Then /dev/mapper/luks_x is created, but not automounted on
/media/xxx.

Any solution?

BTW: how to remount all devices? sudo mount -a remounts only those in
fstab...

[Bug 138405] Eduroam support in Network Maneger

2007-09-09 Thread Matej Kovačič
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Eduroam is wide-european academic wireless network used by students and
researchers. The idea of a network is quite simple - student or
researcher register himself by his/her dometic organization. When user
goes to some other academic institution, which is part of Eduroam
network, he can register (authenticate) himself with his username and
password and gets the access to the internet (this is done trough LDAP
servers). I am from Slovenia and almost all bigger faculties are now
part of Eduroam network, and network roaming works very well. Some of
my friends also ent abroad (for instance in Sweden), and were able to
use Eduroam network there with no problem. Eduroam network is being
developed, but the goal is to be accessible to all european students and
researchers. So Eduroam support is quite important by my opinion.

Basically all tools someone needs are already included in Ubuntu (i. e.
wpa supplicant). User needs username and password and certificate of his
domestic organisation. Unfortunately some organisations know only
Windows operating system and gave users certificates in .cer form, while
WPA supplicant needs certificate in .pem form. But this is no big
problem, since one form of certificate can easily be transformed into
other.

However, Eduroam uses WPA2, but in Ubuntu is not working, because it
uses WPA2 with LDAP support and some other modifications.

My proposal is to add new feature of Network Manager. Network Manager:
- should be able to configure Eduroam support. It can be done even
automatically, since Eduroam has his own unique SSID eduroam.
- support diferent profiles (for different users on the same machine). The
problem here is that there should be mechanisms to hide someone password from
other users (profiles). This can be done with some form of encryption (like
Firefox's password manager) - user would be able to protect his profile with
his own password. The other option is to give the usser possibility not to save
his password to his profile.
- automatically support for conversion of .cer to .pem certificates (by running
a command openssl x509 -inform der -in MYCERT.cer -out MYCERT.pem

Basically configuration file looks like that:

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=0
eapol_version=1
ap_scan=1
network={
ssid=eduroam
proto=WPA WPA2
key_mgmt=WPA-EAP
group=CCMP TKIP
eap=TTLS
anonymous_identity=[EMAIL PROTECTED]
ca_cert=/etc/ssl/cacert.pem
phase2=auth=PAP
identity=[EMAIL PROTECTED]
password=PASSWORD
}

Network Manager should be able to prompt user for:
- anonymous_identity=[EMAIL PROTECTED] (needs to enter just
organisation.edu)
- ca_cert=/etc/ssl/cacert.pem (ask user to load certificate (and possibly
convert it into .pem) and save certificate into /etc/ssl)
- identity=[EMAIL PROTECTED] (need to enter [EMAIL PROTECTED])
- password=PASSWORD (unfortunately password is in plaintext, but this file is
accesible only through root privileges)

In order to connect user, Network Manager should run this two commands:

sudo wpa_supplicant -B -i wlan0 -c /path/to/config/file.conf -D wext
sudo dhclient wlan0

So in configuration there should also be information about the wireless
interface (eth1, wlan0,...) and WPA supplicant driver (-D wext - wext
is the most commond, or some else - they are listed in man
wpa_supplicant).

This feature will enable students and researchers accross the Europe to
use Eduroam easily with Ubuntu.

[Bug 105266] Re: cant mount 2nd crypted partition within cryptroot

The same problem here. I am using Feisty server and did dist-upgrade.

Booted from 2.6 .20-16-server, and the same problem remains.

However, you need to create /dev/.static/dev/mapper directory by:
sudo mkdir /dev/.static/dev/mapper

Then you can luksformat and cryptsetup luksOpen your partition. It works
also after reboot.

This bug could be easily repaired, please do so.

[Bug 113790] Encrypted USB is owned by root

Public bug reported:

I created encrypted USB drive, in fact, I have USB drive woth three partitions,

When I remove USB key and plug it in again, I get gnome password dialog.
I enter password and USB is mounted. But the new USB crypto disk is
owned by root, so normal user can not write on it.

This is not the case with ordinary, non-encrypted USB partitions.

monitor which does not support high resolution.

Fortunately, I have a projector and I am able to open appropriate menu
and change the resolution to 1024x768. But this is not very good
introduction to Linux for my Windows infected students... :-((

A simple question: why the hell is Ubuntu started in maximal resolution?
It it live CD anyway. It should be started in smaller resolution in
safe graphics mode at least.
