[Bug 114595] Re: Feisty HAL upgrade broke suspend on lid close

2007-06-04 Thread Matthew McEachen
I'm also experiencing the bug on Feisty on an HP zt3000. This is a
pretty severe bug -- if you think your laptop is going to suspend and
you put it in your laptop bag, the laptop can roast itself and cause
permanent hardware damage before the battery dies.

[Bug 114595] Re: Feisty HAL upgrade broke suspend on lid close

2007-06-04 Thread Matthew McEachen
No -- but I had enabled backports for a couple other packages. I
followed the forum post
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2701612postcount=26 and
downgraded from backports with `sudo apt-get install
hal=0.5.8.1-4ubuntu12 libhal-storage1=0.5.8.1-4ubuntu12
libhal1=0.5.8.1-4ubuntu12` and I've successfully bounced in and out of
suspend-to-RAM four times now after reboot.

I'm using kpowermanager instead of kde-guidance-power-manager, BTW.

[Bug 88180] Re: Missing dependency on w3m-el and quack-el

2007-02-27 Thread Matthew McEachen
I just upgraded to Edgy yesterday, and found that a bunch of packages
had been orphaned (like gnumeric), where dpkg didn't remember that the
binary was installed. Perhaps quack-el was in an odd state of having
.el's lying around and emacs-install picking it up?

Nevertheless, I could not get the Edgy version of emacs-snapshot-gtk to
load vc-svn.el, so I upgraded to a backport.

Ran into the issue as well. I'm running edgy now, but this was an ugly
hiccup in what otherwise was a very slick upgrade.

+1 to upgrade the priority.

[Bug 37472] Re: the keyboard don't work perfectly on laptops acer travelmate 2300 series with Dapper

2006-07-11 Thread Matthew McEachen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 39315 ***

Have you tried, as a ugly workaround, unloading the modules mentioned in
the kernel bug report?

Edit /etc/default/acpi-support's MODULES and add

sbp2 ohci1394 ieee1394 ehci_hcd uhci_hcd usbcore

And while you're at it, add a sync call to the end of
/etc/acpi/prepare.sh (to make sure the disk cache buffers are clear
before acpi suspend fails and your FS has to replay logs)

The new kernel should not require the 1394 modules to be unloaded, as I
understand it.

[Bug 50168] You need to add libgnome2-perl to the general packages installed

2006-06-17 Thread Matthew McEachen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xubuntu-live

After installing a basic xubuntu 6.06 system and rebooting, I ran
synaptic and loaded some packages which required debconf interactions.
The Applying Changes dialog appeared to hang.

Only after I clicked the expand triangle to reveal the Terminal did I
see:

debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Gnome
debconf: (Unable to load Gnome -- is libgnome2-perl installed?)
debconf: falling back to frontend: Dialog

and debconf was asking me a question through the curses dialog
interface.

If you just added the libgnome2-perl package as a dependent or default-
installed package, you'd avoid this issue.

** Affects: xubuntu-meta (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Untriaged
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 50158] WORKAROUND!

2006-06-17 Thread Matthew McEachen
I rebooted into xfce, opened a terminal and editted
/etc/apt/sources.list to include:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted

I then did

$ sudo aptitude update
$ sudo aptitude upgrade

THEN launched the installer (and chose reiserfs this time instead of xfs
as the single mega-partition type). The installer worked without a
hitch this time.

[Bug 49776] Re: exim4-config ignores /etc/mailname

2006-06-14 Thread Matthew McEachen
IMHO, the bug could be resolved simply by changing the terminology from
Other destinations for which mail is accepted to Destinations for
which mail is accepted. Sucking in /etc/mailname would be nice too.

[Bug 49776] exim4-config ignores /etc/mailname

2006-06-14 Thread Matthew McEachen
Public bug reported:

http://wiki.debian.org/EtcMailName seems to indicate that /etc/mailname
should be the hostname to use on outgoing news and mail messages.
Running dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config (after manually editting the
/etc/mailname to be a FQDN), the System mail name was still
localhost.localdomain.

OK, no biggie, I typed the contents of /etc/mailname into the System
mail name, and left Other destinations for which mail is accepted as
empty.

With this configuration, though, exim4 didn't realize that it was the
mailserver for /etc/mailname.

Only after I changed the Other destinations for which mail is accepted
to ALSO include the /etc/mailname contents did exim4 believe it was the
mailserver for my FQDN.
