[Bug 420094] [NEW] Installer hangs on not stable internet connection
Public bug reported: Very often I try to install Ubuntu from Ubuntu minimal cd (mini.iso) on different computers. I have not so speedy and stable internet connection. And very often install process hangs on step Installing base system - Retrieving packages because it try to download some package but download process hangs at some time or broken and reconnected (maybe reconnected with another dynamic ip). Because my internet is not so quick (128kbps) the download process goes long time (more than one hour, and all of this time I see the progress bar at 6%!!) and chance to got the disconnect or connect problems is very big! I didn't see the download process and can't detect when it hangs! I can look at 6% and package name and wait many hours when something changes, but nothing changes! And I didn't see any error or progress messages in installer log file! For solve the problem I need to restart the computer and try to install all again from first step! I think the installer must have this functions when downloading something from the internet: - shows the download indicator of each file in bytes - shows the download speed - shows which file from which location is downloaded - have the buttons for restart or retry file download process - option to break the download process and go back to mirror select - option to change selected mirror and continue download from another mirror Please do Ubuntu more user-friendly for users with low speed internet connections! [Bug 122402] Re: [7.10] [xubuntu] Install fails Failed to determine codename for the release
I have downloaded and checked an ubuntu-9.04-alternate-amd64.iso CD and see this bug too. Steps to reproduce: 1. Download ubuntu-9.04-alternate-amd64.iso 2. Create a bootable USB (or HDD) using unetbootin from this iso 3. Boot a comuter from this USB (or HDD) 4. Process the install to the step load installer components from cd (ignoring failed detection of CDROM) 5. Go to console (alt+f2) 6. Mount drive with installer files to the /cdrom: # mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /cdrom 7. Copy folder /cdrom/dists/jaunty to /cdrom/dists/stable (because if we copy ISO to the FAT system via unetbootin, symlink /cdrom/dists/stable converts to empty file) with commands: # rm /cdrom/dists/stable # cp /cdrom/dists/jaunty /cdrom/dists/stable -R 8. Go back to installer (alt+f1) 9. Start the step load installer components from cd again. 9.1. Solve the unetbootin bug (when copying files, file pool/main/l/linux/fs-secondary-modules-2.6.28-11-generic-di_2.6.28-11.42_amd64.udeb saves as pool/main/l/linux/fs-secondary-modules-2.6.28-11-generic-di_2.6.28-11.42_amd64.ude): - when we see the error problem reading data from the CDROM we goes to console (alt+f2) and type # cp /cdrom/pool/main/l/linux/fs-secondary-modules-2.6.28-11-generic-di_2.6.28-11.42_amd64.ude/cdrom/pool/main/l/linux/fs-secondary-modules-2.6.28-11-generic-di_2.6.28-11.42_amd64.udeb after that returns to the installer (alt+f1) and on Retry click Yes. 10. Process next steps, partitioning, etc 11. On step Install the base system we will see the error: [!!] Install the base system Debootstrap Error Failed to determine codename for the release. [Bug 257907] [NEW] Keyboard randomly blocks on KDE4 applications when USB keyboard is attached to PC
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kde4 I have use a notebook ACER C300 (Intel(R) Celeron(R) M processor, Intel® 855GME chipset) with external USB keyboard and KDE 4.1 session (Kubuntu Hardy 8.04 with KDE 4.1 release). Integrated to notebook and external USB keyboards works good. But randomly (after 30 mins or after 8 hours of working in KDE 4.1 session) keyboards locks and I can't type anything or use KDE hotkeys in both keyboards! But linux shortcuts works good! I can switch language (Alt+Shift), can activate another terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F2) and both keyboards in this text terminal works good and I can switch back to KDE4 (but keyboard stay not working in KDE applications); and I can correctly kill Xorg session with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace! After restarting Xorg, both keyboards goes work normally. I can't found any error messages in /var/log/messages or any other log with errors in the time of problem starts. I try already 2 keyboards: Genius KB-06XE and OKLICK 520 S. This issue I have got on my computer about a month ago and see it almost every day and very often many times a day. And today my friend buy a new USB keyboard (Genius KB-06XE) and got this bug too! He have a stationary computer (not notebook) with another processor and motherboard chipset (full-size motherboard), Kubuntu Hardy 8.04 with KDE 4.1 release.
