[Bug 989258] [NEW] hud- and unity-service increase memory usage and freeze firefox

2012-04-26 Thread Sam_
Public bug reported:

This is a follow-up of bug 964893.
Increased memory usage does not occur on guest account and not on laptop, both
don't have compiz cube setup.

There is again a ~2 GB increase of memory usage when opening hud on firefox
full screen mode.
Firefox isn't responsible for ~2 min.
When it all (cpu, mem) settled switch to another workspace open e.g.
gnome-system-monitor and close it again.
Switching back to the workspace where firefox is will immediately increase
memory of firefox, hud- and unity-service.

Workaround is to kill HUD by pid which will settle everything to normal
values.

[Bug 983116] Re: [Component: Keyboard] HUD is Alt not Alt L

2012-04-17 Thread Sam_
Sebastien, thank you for the explanation.
Should I close this bug then as invalid since the subject isn't true then or we
wait for someone else confirming?
It also depends on the keyboard layout if there exist two Alt-keys.
I'm not sure if Alt_Left would improve the understanding regarding different
keyboard layouts.

[Bug 933761] Re: Shortcut descriptions truncated

2012-04-16 Thread Sam_
After recent unity updates there is a worse case example of g-c-c UI and it's
components.
Afaik and in fact HUD appears with Alt-key.
Beside that the shortcut is wrong in g-c-c (983116):
- with german locale, the description in g-c-c [Component: Keyboard] says
something about what HUD should do by Alt+L (screenshot-de)
- a user can only guess what alt+l is supposed to do, in particular may ask
what is HUD anyway
- open g-c-c in a terminal with prefix LANG=C and it will display a readable
description about the shortcut (screenshot-en)

[Bug 819994] Re: String length of items seems limited (system settings label get truncated)

2012-04-16 Thread Sam_
Sebastien, of course it's customized, pc has a larger size monitor than my
laptop.
On laptop the font size is 11 but the window itself is way too large it almost
uses half of the desktop.
The ccsm window is resizable and looks fine in any mode or font size.
Why do I need to defend or explain a custom setup anyway? Do we talk about font
size or a compiled kernel here?

Please don't mix cause and effect. The user didn't break the UI - developers
did.
Thus I'd like to ask developers if they have an idea to fix the issue.

Imho the solution is to revert incomprehensible decisions like windows
shouldn't be resizable.
Or are developers telling us, don't customize your font size, no matter which
monitor, you're doomed to select 8-10 font size otherwise try accessibility
features?
Fine, then they should say so loud, so users know, this DE isn't one which
should be customized, otherwise it may become useless.
Then why font-selector has an option to resize larger than 10 in the first
place if anything above 10 can make an UI unuseable?
Sounded pretty realistic in the past.
... however each user has different preferences.

Window size mandatory.

Example how perfect it looks when using smaller font size. What is it, 8?

[Bug 818606] Re: Apport changes local language of interface which a bug report is submitted with

2012-04-13 Thread Sam_
** Description changed:

- Reproducable with Natty and Oneiric.
+ Reproducable with Natty, Oneiric, Precise.
Since it is expected to report bugs in english, a user with non-english local

  What happens:
When e.g. Firefox wasn't running at this time and opened by apport from

tooltips) also to english. Unless Firefox is closed and reopened it remains in

[Bug 819994] Re: String length of items seems limited (system settings label get truncated)

2012-04-13 Thread Sam_
Imho comparing g-c-c and ccsm it's so mega embarrassing that it makes me cry
when they deliver an LTS with such an UI of a core app.
Millions are now doomed to view this daily for five years? There is and has
been no alternative? No plan B if gtk-3 fails?
It also can't be serious to ask translators to shortcut strings or select other
terms.

[Bug 969520] Re: IcedTea Java Web Start fails to open .jnlp file

2012-04-12 Thread Sam_
There is still an openjdk-6* folder in /usr/lib/jvm/ and
/etc/alternatives/javaws points to it. (screenshots)
Obviously openjdk-6* wasn't really purged as expected.

Due to .xsession-errors output of /usr/bin/javaws I've adjusted lines 3 and 9
to openjdk-7*.
Successful result, icedtea webstart donwloads the files.

Volumeviewer still doesn't run due to security concerns. (attached debug file)
Sweethome3d runs successfully after icedtea webstart downloads referring files.
(screenshot)

Expected.
Purge packages completely as requested incl. libraries.
Update alternatives links properly when there is only one alternative and

[Bug 969520] Re: IcedTea Java Web Start fails to open .jnlp file

2012-04-12 Thread Sam_
** Description changed:

Attempt to open a downloaded .jnlp file by right click and selecting 'IcedTea

There is no result or feedback what's wrong.

java-6-openjdk although it isn't installed and hence no alternative.
+ Workaround: adjust lines 3 and 6 to java-7*.

2012-04-12 Thread Sam_
When update-manager is finished and updates are completed there is also a delay
until the referring indication appears in indicator-session.
A user may assume there is something wrong and updates aren't completed which
leaves the user in an uncertain state.

[Bug 926368] Re: Ugly menu overlays without distinction

2012-04-11 Thread Sam_
Panel transparency vs black text overlay is due to enabled 'no blur'.
To make the black text menu vanish fast it needs adjusting of fade options to a
minium value in order not to disturb too long.
With enabled blur there is no transparent panel and no black text.
Inconsistencies or rather not independent processes make an overall experience
(maintainance) difficult.
Different bug reports address launcher-, dash-, panel-colour either way, if one
looks or behaves ok, the other one doesn't.

[Bug 974190] Re: auto-dialog: Unable to start web browser

2012-04-09 Thread Sam_
Happened again with similar scenario.
Update via update-manager.
Download and install updates.
Use check-button to renew cache.
Apport displays it's generic crash message, requests authentication to report,
reveals it was an aptdaemon crash, which points to bug 971839, dialog window
again says web browser couldn't be opened.
This time Firefox was already open and displays the bug report.

2012-04-09 Thread Sam_
Can reliable reproduce the crash and erroneously dialog when rm
_usr_sbin_aptd.0.crash file from /var/crash.
After removal of .crash file either run update-manager in a terminal or via
dash.
Click the check-button results in apport report.
When the .crash file isn't removed the crash and so the dialog could be
reproduced once again, but not a third or fourth time.

[Bug 966448] Re: Dash (no blur) renders black stripes while scrolling

2012-04-08 Thread Sam_
Unduped from bug 941066.
Reason:
- the issue hasn't be seen here before 5.8
- disagree with 'Desired resolution'

It is not desired to have a black aka tinted dash.
Expected is an option to disable the mourning dress.

IIRC there was the ability of dash to blur the background colour which
disappeared, maybe it could be considered as a compromise option if
transparency isn't desired by design.

[Bug 959364] Re: debconf: DbDriver passwords warning: could not open /var/cache/debconf/passwords.dat: Permission denied

2012-04-06 Thread Sam_
While .xsession-errors was pretty useless in past weeks, now it's fixed
(951597) and almost empty, in fact debconf indications can no longer be
viewed. Since there was no package update not sure how to trigger the
output.
