as I have known Linux, IDE disk devices have always been entirely predictable They can switch around due to cabling, BIOS and driver changes. You've encountered the last one... Looks like you have to know the device names before you can assemble a RAID array - so UUIDs don't help much here. Only if you are assembling the array by hand (e.g. a disk has been dropped). The final filesystem can be labelled like any partition (assuming the /dev/md? device was built). If md is working correctly it will be able to assembled the underlying partitions itself automatically (so it won't matter if you switch disks around etc). Old documentation won't talk about filesystem labelling or UUIDs (because it wasn't around) so take a look at the age of the documents. -- Upgrade to 8.04 (Hardy) trashed RAID Array https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/224171 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Whenever you have voting people will assume that the outcome must have influence. People will think that so long as a bug is voted on enough its priority will rise until it must be fixed which need not be the case (popular bugs can remain open for a long time). This just creates angst and people go on and say How come this bug with 500 votes hasn't been fixed? Bug XYZ has less votes so you should be fixing this one. If a low priority bug has a high number of votes people will become extremely angry. Additionally some of its boot services seem to do a fair amount of writing to the disk causing kjournald to use up IO. Now Fedora are well known for including huge amounts of debugging in their kernels while the distro is in alpha/beta testing so perhaps this isn't yet representative of the true final speed. Compared to Fedora 8... something funny seems to be happening around udevsettle though (9s seconds versus 14s) and the time it takes for kernel to start appears to be longer in the F9 chart. Further the new gdm just isn't as fast at starting autologin as the old gdm (but you can't see that on the chart). Unlike the chart for Hardy though, there is only one small gap of no CPU/IO usage once userland has started so the long times don't seem to be predominantly due to a slow X (although Xorg is started twice so X speed will matter more in Fedora than Ubuntu). Rather, Fedora just seems to start and do a huge amount. It's definitely a distro for higher spec machines capable of crunching through stuff at a better. Looking at the services it starts it seems geared towards more traditional *nix corporate desktops / servers. I'll be interested to see if the fast Xorg boot stuff in the upcoming Xorg 1.5 will boost our boot numbers, or if the Xorg boot time just gets lost in the noise. I should think it would help (at least in the time to the clock test rather than to gdm) as GNOME tasks should be kicked off sooner. However fake gains could be made by allowing GNOME to be responsive even when the clock (which is often the last applet to load) hasn't finished loading. However if more GNOME utilities need to be started any gains will be washed away in the autologin case. Ubuntu boot speed fall in Hardy
Hi, I've noticed that Ubuntu's boot speed seems to have taken a fall in Hardy. Anecdotally I believe that Gutsy was the fastest but from a viewable stats perspective the fall can be seen in Feisty versus Hardy on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BootCharting#head-dca0372aa8fd490a9717ad0c72c9b400c236a581 . While not as slow as other distros it is a shame to see things slow down a bit. Of special interest to me is the fall in time to usable auto-login desktop case as this is something I use regularly. It seems that modern Ubuntu simply has more to do/start after a user logs in... Before I forget back in the Gutsy days I ran various timing tests to see what would help boot speed. I think I found that doing a profile boot helped the most (although you may never get back the time it took to do the profile boot :) followed by disabling appropriate modules in /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common (if you use restricted drivers) and finally a very slight improvement by not starting services for things you don't have (e.g. this machine doesn't have bluetooth) but one must take care when doing this. The difference between disabling services using /etc/default/ and update-rc.d remove seemed very small. I had more benefit tuning readahead to read files that were used during user log in too. Shutdown speed also seems to have fallen in Hardy with gdm often hanging for 30 seconds when it stopped and the first stage of the shutdown animation is often not displayed. -- Sitsofe | http://sucs.org/~sits/ -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss

[Bug 35638] Re: Printer is not detected properly over USB
dracon: The thing is, this bug is about has nothing to do with hal (if you read earlier comments like https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cupsys/+bug/35638/comments/77 you will even see me saying the output of the hal backend is fine for me) or parallel - usb cables. I don't doubt that the end result looks the same but the cause is different. Really it's about (Brother) printers with broken (built into the printer) USB implementations. CUPS only recently (around Gutsy era) gained a hal backend and I first filed this issue back in the Dapper days (which pre-dates the hal backend by at least a year). CUPS's USB backend has nothing to do with hal. I do not know what CUPS currently uses its hal backend for (perhaps to save on polling or announce the arrival of new printers to interested programs) but I believe in your case it is a red herring. The hal backend might well not be working for you but from what has been said I don't think this is your real problem (as the hal patches are apparently not even carried by upstream cups). If you REALLY want to talk to the developers of the hal cups backend you can try the project Utopia list ( http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/utopia-list ) but if you do that I'd make absolutely sure that the real problem is the CUPS hal backend and not something else. Personally I think you will learn more by filing a new bug on http://cups.org/login.php?PAGE=/str.php?U0+P0+S-2+C0+I0+E0+M10+Q and carefully (but concisely) explaining the issue you have and seeing what the response is even if it is we won't spend more time on such cables or printers that use them. The fact that Windows works just suggests it identifies printers a different way (without depending entirely on deviceid strings). Maybe it ties up a port entirely but that discussion would be really better off in a separate bug report as any discussion here will only confuse people as to the purpose of this bug report (bugs.launchpad.net isn't suited to forum discussions). -- Printer is not detected properly over USB https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/35638 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 178775] Re: Can't set static IP --network manager--
The problem appears to be that interfaces that are not marked auto in /etc/network/interfaces will not be touched by various system scripts and NetworkManager will not touch them either. From /etc/init.d/networking : if ifup -a; then log_action_end_msg $? else log_action_end_msg $? fi From the ifup manpage -a means affect all interfaces marked auto. If you look at udev rules you can see something similar. From /etc/udev/rules.d/85-ifupdown.rules : ACTION==add, RUN+=/sbin/start-stop-daemon --start --background --pidfile /var/run/network/bogus --startas /sbin/ifup -- --allow auto $env{INTERFACE} --allow auto is effectively only allowing interfaces in the auto class which appears to be similar to -a . If a user manually does ifup interfacename then the interface appears to be brought up and configured correctly. Now either NetworkManger needs to be taught to configure static/manual interfaces that lack auto ( which apparently does for Fedora http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=518189 ) or whatever is writing /etc/network/interfaces (often gnome-system-tools ) needs to add auto to interfaces when they are configured manually. Until this is done manual/static interfaces will continue to be broken on boot. -- Can't set static IP --network manager-- https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/178775 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 178775] Re: Can't set static IP --network manager--
I've added a gnome-system-tools component to this too until both NetworkManager AND gnome-system-tools agree how the interface should be managed. Description of the problem: Setting an interface to be manually configured will prevent the interface from being brought up on boot. Steps to reproduce: (assuming all your interfaces are initially set to roaming) 1. Left click on nm-applet . 2. Click on Manual configuration 3. Click on Unlock. 4. Type password and click on Authenticate. 5. Select Wireless connection (wlan0) and then click on Properties. 6. Untick Enable roaming mode. 7. Fill in ESSID box, network password (if required) and set the Configuration to Automatic configuration (DHCP). 8. Click OK. 9. Click on Close. 10. Reboot the computer. 11. Wait for Ubuntu Hardy to start, log in and start a terminal. 12. Run the following: host ubuntu.com Expected results: Something like: ubuntu.com has address 91.189.94.158 ubuntu.com mail is handled by 10 mx.canonical.com. to be shown. Actual results: ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached How reproducible is this problem? It is reproducible every time. Additional information: Doing ifup wlan0 results in the interface being correctly started. Interfaces could be manually configured in Gutsy and started on boot. [Bug 214190] [NEW] Kernel changelog is not truncated
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-manager Description of the problem: update-manager shows all of the kernel changelog rather than the part of the changelog after the currently installed kernel. Steps to reproduce: (Have a kernel package update pending) 1. Start update-manager . 2. Click on a numbered package (e.g. linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic ) 3. Make sure Description of update is open and that the changes tab is selected. Expected results: Only to see changelog from linux-image-generic 2.6.24.12.13 onwards. Actual results: Changelog from [2.6.22-1.1] onwards is shown. The first highlighted heading appears to be Version 2.6.24-1.1: . How reproducible is this problem? It is reproducible every time. [Bug 205653] Re: Hardy beta - laptop randomly freezes with caps scroll lock leds blinking
If you are receiving issues while you are using any binary only bits (e.g. NVIDIA/ATI binary drivers, ndiswrapper etc) many folks will be extremely reluctant to investigate any issues your system is having (because they could lie in a binary only piece). jaarik: If you are using ndiswrapper I think you will have to see if you can find/file different bug report. While the hardware might be the same, your driver is different to that of other people in this bug report and as such while the outcome (crash) might be the same the cause may very well be different. Just for the record complete lock ups (where even sysrq doesn't work) are almost always kernel level bugs, X or broken hardware related issues. A userspace program like dbus is effectively unable to cause an issue like this. -- Hardy beta - laptop randomly freezes with caps scroll lock leds blinking https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/205653 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 211780] [NEW] Cannot connect to network when using hostap_pci
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager Description of the problem: Using NetworkManager to connect to an unencrypted access point fails when using the hostap_pci driver. Steps to reproduce: 1. Start Ubuntu. 2. Log in. 3. Wait for a list of access points to be shown in nm-applet. 4. Select the access point you wish to connect to. Expected result: Animated NetworkManager icon to occur followed (after 5 seconds) by one green light then a second green light. Working internet connection to have been established. Actual result: No green lights ever occur. After some time network manager gives up and no internet connection has been established. How reproducible is this problem: It is reproducible every time. Additional information: I have hand compiled the orinoco_pci drivers from 2.6.24 (as Ubuntu doesn't ship them) and NetworkManager successfully connects when those are loaded instead of hostap_pci. It is possible to manually (via iwconfig, ifconfig and dhclient) to connect to the access point using hostap_pci.
