Re: SSH and the Ubuntu Server
Hi Nicolas, On Thu, 2010-11-18 at 09:24 +0100, Nicolas Barcet wrote: Hello Stephan, On 11/18/2010 08:20 AM, Stephan Hermann wrote: First of all, I think for Ubuntu Server the SSHD service should be enabled by default, eventually having a question on what IP interface the service should be listening and eventually giving a possibility to push a ssh public key to the box (please not via Launchpad or other web based services). SSHD is (for me) an essential server service. Having SSHD not enabled by default on Servers is a bit of a strange behaviour, regarding other enterprised based Distros. I think everyone in Corporate Services agrees with your above statement that the default should be to include sshd. However, what we are facing here is a rather major change in default behavior and, as such, justifies that users be properly informed about it. Think about it this way: wouldn't you like to see a warning if at some point the desktop was not to install any graphical interface anymore? Well, when I take the desktop install media, I would like to see a fully working desktop after the installation up and running. That's why I think someone installing from a server install media would like to see a fully running server installation afterwards which is accessable. Now, we can discuss what a fully running server installation is? I would say, that running Ubuntu server in a datacenter, is mostly behind a secured network, where e.g. SSHD is listening on a special ip interface, which is not accessible by everyone but only to a team of admins with Godmode enabled. And yes, most of the time you have remote insight boards etc. to access the machines. On Amazon EC2 this is totally different. I don't actually know if you can somehow access the xen vm without remote access from the public (NATed) network of Amazon. When we are thinking now to enable a service by default, which wasn't installed and enabled in the past, we need to inform the admin. Agreed. But what is the best way? We don't want to have the admin stay as long as it takes at the console. Most admins (at least those I know) do read documentations, and release notes are at least one of the documentations every admin should read (just think about the change of behaviour of the bonding interface setups from jaunty - karmic - lucid). On Ubuntu Desktop this is different. The Desktop doesn't need an sshd server, and there ist shouldn' be installed or when installed, it shouldn't be enabled. A newly introduced service which opens a port could be documented in the release notes and other prominent places. If, as Kees mentioned in another email, we are facing users that press next without looking, do you really think that the same users will take the time to read the release notes? Really, this is difficult to answer. Regarding the user base of non-technicians, comsuming-only desktop users (please, don't interpretate it as all ubuntu users are non-technicians and consuming only), I don't think that those users are reading a lot of documentation. Seeing that from the Windows world, I think we can drop documentation completely. Regarding the Admin people, they do read documentation and especially release notes, ChangeLogs etc. when they are in the field of Operating System Deployment (again, at least the admins I do know and I'm working/had worked with) I think I fully understand the security team's concerns here, but given that: a/ Based on what I have heard at UDS, we are considering adding a post boot install phase for additional package installation, it would seems reasonable to make it available across the network. b/ Even if I have made my initial install with a CD or a USB stick, I do not know much admins that want to stay in front of their servers more than the strict minimum time. Personally I generally hate myself when I have missed to check the sshd service on the tasksel screen, because it means that I'll have to wait in the noisy and cold server room an additional 5 mins (yes, despite our efforts to improve boot times, hardware manufacturer for servers still consider it a great idea to have various checks been done during boot, prior to the OS being loaded) Actually I don't know any admin anymore who stands in front of a console in a cold datacenter, mostly we are using ILOs and other remote console access methods to get hands on the server (most of our servers don't even have CD drives anymore, totally useless nowadays). That's why I already think that we are discussing a matter which isn't really one. What we are trying now is to deliver a better user experience, for people trying out our server media. c/ Similarly to b, when I am installing a virtual machine, the less time I spend in the server screen emulation the better, as this is generally much slower and often much clumsier (think keyboard mapping for example) than accessing the same server over SSH

[snip] I would gladly revise this proposal to simply: * Automatically 'tick' OpenSSH Server by default on the Server Tasksel screen Which would also sit there and wait for the user to consciously affirm their selection, and would avoid the countless server installations where people forget to install SSH and must make their way back to a console on their newly installed system and add the openssh-server package. As many people have mentioned, this will cause a surprise for users who click through the install dialogs expecting things to not change since they last used it. Sorry, but this is something which strucks me, really. When we don't change things over time, we will never have a better user experience. When we change something it needs to be documented in a public place where everyone interested can read it first hand. Also, since this occurs late in the install process, no dialogs to prompt the user to harden their password can be offered, as others have suggested. Oh well, we can change that inside the installer as well. Not prompting for a user choice, but choosing a hardened password automatically and showing it to the user mkpasswd --chars=20 --crypt-md5 or whatever should be enough. that's only a technical problem easily to solve. You say there are countless installations. I don't think anybody expects SSH to be automatically installed in a new server; it's a service that should be enabled carefully after consideration of your network environment and security needs. I feel that the potential for harm of accidental installation exceeds the increase in convenience from not having to explicitly select the task. I think we have more installations of RHEL or SLES in the enterprise server market, and they do have sshd enabled by default. Even when you install an VMWare ESX host, ssh is enabled by default, without the questionable root access. No. It looks to me like something that, in addition to proper packaging, ought to have a thorough functional review before entering the archive. I am the packager of ubuntu-tweak, can you tell me what's the problem with ubuntu-tweak? I don't know that there is a problem, but given the invasive nature of it's functionality, I think it appropriate for it to be given more of a review than just being packaged properly. In Ubuntu's history there have been multiple Tweak programs and so far they have always proved to be more harmful than helpful at the scale the Ubuntu archive operates. This one may be the one that gets it right, but having found that they rebrand PPAs that other people maintain as there's on their web site, I'm not at all inclined to assume this is all well intentioned. you are right. this package is active-maintained, and I'll forward your opinion to the upstream author. I think he'll fix this bug. ubuntu-tweak is very useful for me, and it's also has many users. so I want to push it to Ubuntu and hope it can catch ubuntu 10.10. thanks. I don't have a lot of time for a detailed review. A quick look shows that this can enable quite a number of untrusted repositories. My recollection is that we although Envy was initially accepted doing something similar it was required to be fixed to not do this. I don't think a package that adds untrusted repositories is suitable. Yes, it can enable a lot of untrusted sources, but I don't understand how it does it. under software-center there are lot of archives, which are not ubuntu official, but they are greyed out...and with the unlock button it does nothing (I took the version from revu) Tbh, everything what's in there is already available on a standard gnome desktop. We don't need a copy of update-manager, software-center or whatever is in there... I even don't like descriptions like there are in ubuntutweak/common/appdata.py. It think that this could give us a sitution as we had during times when we had the unofficial backport times... I will not give a +1 for this tool in the official ubuntu archives. (Please read the threads about Automatix and Friends in the past...google have references) For reference, here's Matthew Garrett's technical review of Automatix: http://mjg59.livejournal.com/77440.html Re-reading that now, I note that the issue of adding untrusted third party sources doesn't seem to be the argument against Automatix. Matthew wrote in his last paragraph: In its current form Automatix is unsupportable, and a mechanism for flagging bugs from machines with Automatix installed may provide a valuable aid for determining whether issues are due to supported distribution packages or third party software installers. This may not be read as argument against automatix, but the past told us, what will happen to the Ubuntu Bug tracker when third party repositories (and even PPAs from LP are third party) are enabled and non-distro packages are installed. We had all this discussions in the past, and we came to the conclusion that we want to support backports but in an official means Ubuntu blessed way. That's why we created ubuntu backports repository... But there are also other things I don't like. An easy way to tweak gconf settings could also be dangerous for Ubuntu users. But that's eventually only me. One thing I would like to raise: Someone who wants to tweak his/her setup, is not the normal Ubuntu user. Mostly they are power users, and I do think that really knowledged power users can tweak their systems without such a tool. Making it an easy task to tweak and break peoples Ubuntu installation shouldn't be a goal for us in general. Users of mostly all operating systems are doing things, when someone tells them to do so, but those people don't know anything about the dangers. If something breaks, Ubuntu will be flooded with bug reports and complaints, and this is really something we should avoid. A better solution will be to push more backports. And backporting is not that difficult, it just takes time and caution, to not break working systems. I would like to propose fixing this for real now, and documenting the change in the SSL man pages. I'd like to point out that even as far back as Dapper, GnuTLS has not supported SSLv2; IMO, it is high time to make it go away for OpenSSL too. The attached debdiff would disallow the use of SSLv2 in any mode without wrecking the openssl library ABI. Yes please, make it go away. People who are configuring mod_ssl with openssl the wrong way, always have problems when a security audit comes along. SSLv2 is deprecated and should never be used in any scenario. Re: Future of MOTU
Moins, On Thu, 25 Mar 2010 12:15:45 -0600 Brian J Mingus brian.min...@colorado.edu wrote: I have run my own (K)Ubuntu repository for four years so your stereotype must not be completely true. Oh well, this is really...the usual way of doing things. I#m working with software stacks, which aren't inside Debian, Ubuntu, RedHat or OpenSuSE. I'm maintaining repositories with those software for months and years. That's a normal thing. This comes with someones job. Not all software will be pushed into Ubuntu or Debian or whatever distro you use. Maintaining repositories outside the distro landscape is really not the problem. The problem are software packages, where someone wants it in Ubuntu or Debian or whatever distro someone uses. This software package needs to be well maintained and updated/upgraded over time. And this is exactly the problem. A software packager who maintains this package can apply as well for Ubuntu Developer or Debian Developer or Fedora Maintainer or OpenSuSE developer if he or she is ready for that. This implies normally that the newly approved developer will take care about the self made package and about other software packages we have in universe and multiverse. But someone who just wants his or her special software pushed to ubuntu is normally not the type of person who supports it after its pushed to ubuntu. And those packages are rotting in our archives, and after some time, when it doesn't build anymore, we need to find a solution or we remove it from the archive. This is more workload for Ubuntu Developers. If you take care about your packages, you could as well apply as Ubuntu developer, if you want to see your software inside Ubuntu. But from what I see since the last years we have REVU in place, that many packages are not maintained well enough, and many Ubuntu Developers are busy with the packages we merge/sync from Debian during release cycles, so there is no time or no desire to deal with ubuntu only uploaded packages (minus the packages who are ubuntu only but are needed for the Ubuntu OS in general). And really, this is no stereotype, but reality. And it does not only apply for Ubuntu, but for Debian, Fedora or openSuSE or whatever distro is out there. [Bug 527666] Re: LVM Not mounting in Lucid
I'm setting this from Incomplete to Confirmed. The reason is 1) what Deven said below (the instructions are somewhat not applyable to lucid) 2) We have at least two people hitting the very same problem (one of them is my person and the other one is amitk (check http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2010/03/08/%23ubuntu-devel.html) The way to reproduce: 1. create a VG 2. create a LV on the VG 3. Mount the LV via fstab and reboot your server (it happened on ubuntu lucid server flavour) 4. wait and see This is a regression from karmic and should be fixed before release. @bug triaging team: please set the correct regression tag (as I don't know the correct workflow) I wonder if we should move this bug from lvm2 to initramfs, because lvm2 in general does work as a charm...it's only the boot up area. ** Changed in: lvm2 (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- LVM Not mounting in Lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/527666 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
