[Bug 992263] [NEW] Gnome switches to chinese language

2012-04-30 Thread Tobias Grüninger
Public bug reported:

After downgrading Ubuntu 12.04 LTS from Unitiy to old gnome desktop via sudo
'apt-get install gnome-session-fallback' I noticed that after the next restart,
gnome menues were parially in Chinese.
I serched and used locale-gen and dpkg-reconfigure locales to reconfigure and
also gnome-language-selector, but still after reboot the environment variables
were set to LANG=zh_CN.UTF-8 and LANGUAGE=zh_CN.UTF-8.
Only after editing .pam_environemnt and setting there the variables
LANG=en_EN.UTF-8 and LANGUAGE=en_EN.UTF-8, gnome started back in english.

[Bug 988863] [NEW] The hud wrongly executes always the first entry shown when using keyboard

2012-04-26 Thread Tobias
Public bug reported:

I'm using unity-2d, so no idea if this is 2d-related.
I'm using a german environment, so no idea if the following is localization
related.

Steps to reproduce:
* Open the HUD using the ALT key (e.g. in the gnome-terminal),
* type in some letters, e.g. New,
* use the arrow keys to select the second or later entry (e.g. Open New Tab
in gnome-terminal)
* and hit enter.

Expected behaviour: The HUD should open the selected entry. (In my case
Neuer Reiter)

Behaviour: The HUD opens always the first entry shown, disregarding
what I selected. (In my case Neues Terminal)

Workaround: Using the mouse works fine, by clicking on the selected
entry.

[Bug 985033] [NEW] noisy sound after starting mumble

2012-04-18 Thread Tobias
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu precise (development branch)
Release:12.04

mumble:
  Installiert: 1.2.3-2ubuntu4
  Kandidat:1.2.3-2ubuntu4
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 1.2.3-2ubuntu4 0
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/universe amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

 cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB
HDA ATI SB at 0xfe024000 irq 16

 head -n 1 /proc/asound/card0/codec*
Codec: Realtek ALC888

Everytime i start mumble all sounds are getting really weird. I try to
describe it:

When i would play a simple sound like a short beep, im gonna hear a totally
broken beep at first and a second echo. But that echo Sound is OKnot
broken. Try to image listening music with these effects. When i dont restart my
music-player or whatever i use, this effect will remain. When i wait a few
MINUTES and then restart my music-player (or game etc.), everything is OK and i
can use mumble.
I tried this on natty, oneiric and now precise beta, its all the same. I tried
Kubuntu und Xubuntu too.
I tried to configure mumble using ALSA only or PulseAudio only, its all the
same.

Maybe good to know:
When i use PulseAudio for AudioInput and i my audio input is too loud (i speak
too loud or input volume is too high) the sound will break to a noisy sound.
Using ALSA fixes this. But maybe this is another problem.

[Bug 973491] [NEW] nautilus popup menu highlighting using copy and paste incorrect

2012-04-04 Thread Tobias Quinn
Public bug reported:

When an item is right clicked and cut or copy are selected, at the time
of paste (using right click) the menu doesn't reflect that there is an
item available to be pasted. While the paste is still possible, the menu
line is grayed out.

If another nautilus window is opened then the Paste menu item is
correctly enabled and not greyed out.

When nautilus is restarted and there is nothing availble to be pasted
the menu item is greyed out and not selectable.

This is with Precise 12.04 beta 2 using gnome-shell

[Bug 972968] Re: Spurious delayed command line output when using gvim and gnome-shell

Sounds very similar to bug 776499.

Placing this in ~/.bashrc seems to be a workaround

2012-04-03 Thread Tobias Quinn

When gvim is launched from the command line, gvim edits files correctly

[Bug 927952] Re: When I press the Print Screen button, it will not appear in Save Screenshot window.

2012-03-28 Thread Tobias Wolf
Anyone who wants to bring the point of accessibility to upstreams
attention, please add it here:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=669629

Please note, that in Gnome Shell you get a white flash in addition to
the camera shutter sound. Perhaps this doesn’t happen in classic mode.
If so please add this.

The issue of discoverability was raised there too, but apparently
upstream thinks that before, doing screenshots was work and now there’s
less work involved. I cannot follow the logic, but the logic is put
forward here:

[Bug 964991] [NEW] (Maybe GTK+ issue) Left/right keys doesn't expand/fold index parent nodes

2012-03-25 Thread Tobias
Public bug reported:

(Maybe this is a GTK+ issue?)

When I browse the index sidebar, using up- and down keys, it is (?)
expected behavior that a parent node can be expanded/folded with the
left- and right keys.

I'm not sure which key does expand it. Not the enter key or spacebar.
These are apparently linked to the flow of the document in the page
viewer/main container.

The left and right keys doesn't do anything except the standard moving
focus to various widgets.

[Bug 961142] [NEW] chef 0.10: package installation: returned 100, expected 0

2012-03-21 Thread Tobias Wilken
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to prepare nodes with cloud-init and chef 0.10 on Ubuntu
11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) (amazon) instances.

On simple package installation via chef recipe, e.g:
package munin-node

I'm running into a apt-get error:
apt-get -q -y install munin-node=1.4.5-3ubuntu4 returned 100, expected 0 error.

Which can be traced back to 'Bad file descriptor' error, from man-db.
Same installation works fine without problems, when running chef without
cloud-init.

I could trace this error back to some env variables, which are still set while
chef starts to run it's scripts.
Unsetting these variables in the chef recipe solves the problem:
ENV['DEBCONF_REDIR'] =
ENV['DEBIAN_HAS_FRONTEND'] =
package munin-node

Does these variables still needs to be set, while executing the chef
client?

My cloud-config:

apt_update: True

[Bug 954799] Re: unable to use 5.1 with an external trust sound card

2012-03-17 Thread Tobias Wolf
I found the solution to the problem, even though I think it is not as
accessible as it should be:

Install package paman (some advanced tools for pulseaudio), then
launch pulseaudio volume control (at least I assume thats the english
name) und go to the tab configuration where you'll find the sound
setting you're accustomed to (carefull, changing the mode sets volume to
maximum, so better don't be playing loud music while changing the
option...)

I hope that will be of any help.

[Bug 844044] Re: Unity Greeter - Add Network Login option

2012-03-07 Thread Tobias Wolf
Just don’t call it »Other«.

With out LDAP setup epople don’t realize that a bit of white text
»Other« is where they log in. In particular when it is not part of a
list, where it could be inferred from context. If there’s only »Guest«
and »Other« it looks really bad.

Personally I would be fine with »Network Login« and »Network Password«,
but just »Login« and »Password« would work too.

 [SeatDefaults]

That should switch the login to a traditional username password field.
 Does that work for you?

No, sorry, that looks really bad. Then you only get Other and Guest

Before you got the cached users or frequently logged in users *and*
the item Other.

Can you make it possible to somehow achieve the old behaviour?

Now I wonder, how do you debug that? Is there any output anywhere? Which

[Bug 927952] Re: When I press the Print Screen button, it will not appear in Save Screenshot window.

2012-02-09 Thread Tobias Wolf
Sebastien, when there is a need to take a series of screenshots and use
them further right away, going through the g-s desktop app would require
an order of magnitude more steps. The previous system was really quite
efficient.

It’s not even possible to get the old behaviour back through the use of
modified keybindings, because with -i you get two windows. The first
window is unnecessary, the second OTOH window is helpful.

The message is not critical, it’s more informational. In Gnome Shell the
screenshots can now be extracted via OpenGL as shaped textures. But

Seb, do you have a link to Gnome design document handy? Any discussion
about this? Mailing list posts?

If we add a keystroke for copy to clipboard we would have:

 • Print : whole screen
 • AltPrint : focussed window
 • xyzPrint : copy to clipboard, but what? window, desktop, area?

The old system was a good solution, I don’t get this. Is it just plain
old feature-remov-itis?

To answer my own question, in gnome-control-center git there are slots for
*six* keybindings now!
That doesn’t sound like a very thought-out strategy to map six bindings only to
avoid that one little dialog.

And, to wit, we don’t have the new gnome-settings-daemon with media-
keys, we’re stuck with the old system.

Public bug reported:

When I want to export a notebook the process stops after the first page.
This situation occurs when exporting to html as well as LaTex. When

Is the a logfile I can post hereor how can I give you further

2012-02-07 Thread Tobias Wolf
I think this should be escalated to upstream to challenge the notion
that silently putting uninformatively named files into an unseen folder
is a good idea. It just creates confusion and unnecessary work.

That this behaviour trips people up is evidenced by 6 dupes within one
day

Here, »headless« means that no dialog is shown anymore. The screenshots are
placed in your »Pictures« folder silently.
You can choose another folder via GSettings, but you cannot show the dialog.
The only way to get that is to start gnome-screenshot with -i.

[Bug 927947] Re: Print-screen button does not work when you open the menu!

2012-02-06 Thread Tobias Wolf
This is a very old problem. Open menus grab the keyboard and prevent
taking screenshots triggered via the keyboard.

The proposed fix is to implement Xinput GrabOverrides. But that is some
way out still

That because the Ubuntu fix was not the fix that upstream implemented.
The Ubuntu fix was a gsettings override, but upstream made a code
change.

Please pull this change from eog git instead:

[Bug 921082] Re: after touchpad movement and stop, pointer continues in same direction at a steady pace

2012-01-27 Thread Tobias Wolf
Ugh, at least with the Alps touchpad on my Thinkpad X301 the new cursor
behaviour makes clicking links feel like playing bomberman in an ice-
level. The cursor is constantly overshooting. It’s totally broken.

Can I go back to the 1.4.1 driver without rolling all of Xorg back? Is
that possible at all?

[Bug 921082] Re: after touchpad movement and stop, pointer continues in same direction at a steady pace

2012-01-26 Thread Tobias Wolf
This is Trackstick Emulation mode, and it’s super-annoying. I’ve read
«man synaptics» up-and-down and there is no clear way to disable this.
Is it FingerPress? To what level do I have to set it to disable? 256?

There are other settings that have been introduced and set zto default.
And also there are settings that have been disabled. Before the upgrade
you could coast after scrolling, giving you kinetic-like scrolling
behaviour. This is not active anymore.

And, when I scroll down, the scrolled pane sometimes jumps /up/ a
certain distance.

Right now it feels really awkward to use the touchpad (Alps here).
