[Bug 894671] Re: update-manager freezes after initialization

2011-12-10 Thread WarriorIng64
The problem is not fixed. I can check for updates just fine, but I still
cannot install any of them from Update Manager (see bug 898807, which
was marked as a duplicate of this). The window continues to fade out and
become unresponsive for a few minutes after the Install Updates button
is clicked, and when it comes back nothing has been updated.

christopher@XyzPrecise:~$ dpkg -s update-manager | grep Version
Version: 1:0.155.1
christopher@XyzPrecise:~$ dpkg -s update-manager-core | grep Version

[Bug 894671] Re: update-manager freezes after initialization

2011-12-10 Thread WarriorIng64
I'm not a developer, but I still get the feeling this bug and bug 897984
with the Ubuntu Software Center might share the same root cause since
they display similar behavior: both start up and are able to see updated
software just fine, but neither can actually make any changes, instead
waiting for a few minutes and not doing anything.

I am able to open the Software Center just fine, but I cannot

idea how to reproduce it, though I'm currently suspecting changing the

[Bug 851172] Re: [regression] Drag and drop inside dash is very slow with Active Blur activated

2011-12-07 Thread WarriorIng64
I just installed compizconfig-settings-manager and tried out the
different blur options in the Unity plugin, and found that while active
blur produces the worst lag, I still get some noticeable lag and icons
slowly trailing behind my mouse cursor with static blur or even no
blurring selected. Is this an issue that would still fall under this
bug, or is it some other problem I should file a new report for?

[Bug 532812] Re: simple-scan crashed with SIGSEGV in sane_hpaio_close()

2011-12-05 Thread WarriorIng64
This is definitely still an issue in Precise Alpha 1.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Start Simple Scan. Check that it is set to scan in Photo mode.
2. Start a scan, then shortly after it begins filling in the image hit the
cancel button.
3. Switch the scanning mode to Text.
4. Press the Scan button again, and again cancel the scan partway through.
5. Press the button for setting up a new document. Select Discard all changes
in the dialog that pops up.
6. Press the Scan button again. Simple Scan will now crash and close.

Note: the first time I tried this procedure, it crashed with this error.
The second time it crashed as in bug 900289, but the procedure and
result are the same.

Package versions:

simple-scan 3.2.1-0ubuntu2
hplip 3.11.10-1ubuntu1
hplip-gui 3.11.10-1ubuntu1

[Bug 900034] [NEW] Dragging icons from the dash to the launcher is slow and laggy

2011-12-04 Thread WarriorIng64

[Bug 899762] [NEW] Alt+Tab switcher shows black rectangles in place of window previews while workspace switcher is active

2011-12-03 Thread WarriorIng64
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:

1. Enter the workspace switcher with some windows open (Super + S or click the
launcher shortcut).
2. Enter Alt+Tab.
3. Press the down arrow key or wait for the window preview(s) to appear.

Expected behavior:
The window preview comes up as usual (i.e., like when the workspace switcher is
not active).

What happens instead:
The window previews are replaced with solid black rectangles where the contents
should be.

I am reporting this from within my Precise Alpha 1 desktop, but this
exact same behavior is reproducible on my Toshiba Satellite A505-S6960
laptop's 11.10 partition, as well as the 11.10 partition on my desktop.

[Bug 898807] [NEW] Clicking Install Updates button causes Update Manager window to gray out and become unresponsive; updates do not get installed

2011-12-01 Thread WarriorIng64
Public bug reported:

The Update Manager window grays out and becomes unresponsive when the
Install Updates button is clicked, and the mouse cursor shows its busy
animation while held over it. A dialog for the update progress is
supposed to appear, but never does; the program thus becomes stuck like
this until several minutes later when it regains color and
responsiveness but still shows all the updates it was supposed to do.

As a workaround, updates can still be performed by using sudo apt-get
update sudo apt-get upgrade.

[Bug 897984] [NEW] Buttons for installing/removing software gray out and don't do anything

2011-11-29 Thread WarriorIng64
Public bug reported:

To reproduce, either:

1) Go to any yet-to-be-installed piece of software in the Ubuntu Software
Center, and click the Install button
2) Go to any piece of already-installed software and click the Remove button

In both cases, the button will simply gray out and absolutely nothing
else happens.

The More Info... button still works, but the Install/Remove button shown
on the next page does nothing, either.

[Bug 850895] Re: [nouveaufb] Plymouth refuses to show on boot, only at shutdown (mountall error messages)

2011-11-27 Thread WarriorIng64
I have just followed a suggestion here on my question about saving the
output of vbeinfo by trying hwinfo: http://askubuntu.com/q/83085/18612
I'm not sure if the output gives any additional information that could
be useful; it looks similar to but is not the same as what vbeinfo
returns.

On an unrelated note, I am currently considering overwriting my 11.04
partition with a daily build of 12.04 for testing purposes (my 11.10
partition will remain untouched). I may or may not overwrite my current
GRUB setup then with whatever 12.04 provides, which could allow me to
check what the status of the problem is there. Is this a good idea?

[Bug 857089] Re: suggestion: nautilus tweak in ambience theme

2011-11-18 Thread WarriorIng64
I just made my changed version that way because:

1) I had no idea of what I was doing mostly (main reason), yet I just wanted to
fix it
2) I like how the top of the sidebar integrates seamlessly with the bottom of
the titlebar
3) To me, there's no problem between the sidebar and the toolbar, and I think
it gives it a nice almost-3D effect. I'm not sure why the toolbar gradient is
considered an all-or-nothing proposition, but that's not for me to decide

At any rate, I'll just leave it at that and watch this bug for progress.
I still think this is much improved over what's currently in Oneiric,
IMHO.

[Bug 483325] Re: gtk: recordmydesktop doesn't play nice with Gnome-Shell

2011-11-07 Thread WarriorIng64
I'm getting this issue with gnome-shell 3.2.1-0ubuntu1 on Ubuntu 11.10.
The Alt+F2 'r' workaround Alex R mentions above also work for me, though
it seems rather inelegant and ugly to me having to waste the first few
seconds of my recordings just to get around a bug, and is certainly not
a Fix Released.

I should note that I'm using recordmydesktop via the terminal, and the
top panel does come back temporarily while in the Activities view but
disappears again upon return to the desktop. See attached video.

[Bug 851526] Re: 3D no longer works after latest updates

2011-11-06 Thread WarriorIng64
Hi Scott,

I have not been running Unity 3D for the past week or so (switched over
to GNOME Shell on my desktop), but when I last used it everything seemed
fine performance-wise except the lenses being just slightly slow and the
Alt+Tab window switcher performing so slowly as to be almost painful to
use. I get none of these performance problems with the 11.10 install on
my laptop, which instead suffers from window flickering when switching
between windows on the same workspace (see bug 881003).

At any rate, I imagine these would all be separate bugs on their own and
don't belong here. I should also mention that I'm using the Nouveau
driver...what are you using?

[Bug 883023] Re: Banshee silently crashes during play

2011-11-05 Thread WarriorIng64
Eventually I got fed up with Banshee and switched over to Rhythmbox. The
latter does not have the same stability issues (i.e., I can actually
listen to my music or online radio for longer than 10-20 minutes at a
time), not to mention I appreciate Rhythmbox's better GNOME Shell
integration.

I still have Banshee installed, though, if anyone wants me to help out

[Bug 877002] Re: Applications Lens (and apps in the Dash) not immediately available after login

2011-11-03 Thread WarriorIng64
From further testing, I must say that to a lesser extent this problem
also affects some of the other lenses, such as the Gwibber Lens and
Files Lens, but those typically come up more quickly. Also, the wait for
the Applications Lens to appear can extend to as much as 30 seconds in
some cases (or in one extreme case I had while trying to set up my

Another workaround is just to use Alt+F2 (if enabled first) and typing
'r' to restart the Shell. This seems to reset everything temporarily.

[Bug 884524] Re: After a while, windows show on incorrect workspaces in Activities view

2011-10-31 Thread WarriorIng64
Additional notes:

- The pop-up buttons for closing windows in the Activities view also
stop showing.

- Any of the windows shown can be switched to by clicking them as usual.
If the window clicked is actually on another workspace, it still does
the workspace switch while returning to the normal view.

- The problem goes away upon reboot until it occurs again.

[Bug 29894] Re: can't take screenshot when menu on panel is opened

2011-10-25 Thread WarriorIng64
I'm also getting this issue in Oneiric, which I just checked out after
seeing http://askubuntu.com/questions/72208/print-screen-key-doesnt-
work-if-a-drop-down-menu-is-active . Interesting to note is that the
Print Screen key works if menus on the top panel in GNOME Shell are
open. I haven't checked to see whether this is a problem with Unity yet,
though.

I also just took a look at the upstream bug out of curiosity, and I
don't see any attention paid to it for over 2 years now.

[Bug 881003] [NEW] Windows on same workspace flicker when switched between

2011-10-24 Thread WarriorIng64
Public bug reported:

This is an Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit machine upgraded from Ubuntu 11.04. When
switching between two windows on the same workspace under Unity (not
sure if it does the same under GNOME Shell yet), either through clicking
or using Alt+Tab, windows flicker during the switch. This issue did not
exist under 11.04, and is quite distracting.

Attached is a screen recording illustrating the issue. (Please ignore
the tearing, that is a separate issue filed as bug #713594.)

[Bug 880465] [NEW] Duplicate Skype (skype:i386) entries shown

2011-10-23 Thread WarriorIng64
Public bug reported:

When I search for Skype in the Ubuntu Software Center, it finds two
Skype (skype:i386) entries right next to each other, with no discernable
difference between them. They behave like one entry; in the attached
screenshot, I only clicked the Install button for the first entry, and
both of them showed identical progress bars; now when I reopen the
Software Center, it still shows both entries and they're both marked as
installed.

It should be noted that Skype still appears to have been successfully
installed, and I can run it with few problems.

[Bug 879065] [NEW] Banshee crashes often while playing music

2011-10-20 Thread WarriorIng64
Public bug reported:

Using banshee 2.2.0-1ubuntu2 on Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit.

Banshee crashes often while I'm playing music from my hard drive,
usually after a few minutes. There does not seem to be any pattern
leading up to the crashes other than they happen enough to get very
annoying (i.e., just about every time I run Banshee for longer than a
minute or two).

To reproduce, simply let Banshee play some music for a little while, and
wait until a crash occurs.

Attached is output from running banshee --debug in a terminal up until
such a crash, as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingBanshee.

[Bug 877002] [NEW] Applications Lens (and apps in the Dash) not immediately available after login

2011-10-17 Thread WarriorIng64
Public bug reported:

When I login to Ubuntu 11.10 on my Toshiba Satellite A505 laptop, the
Applications Lens is not immediately available after login for about 10
seconds or so. Also, during this time applications cannot be started
through a general search in the Dash until this lens starts.

If I know right away after login what application I want to start, but
it's not pinned to the launcher beforehand, then I must wait each time
to start that application or any other unpinned app, which can be
annoying.

This issue was not present in Ubuntu 11.04 (which this machine was

[Bug 850895] Re: [nouveaufb] Plymouth refuses to show on boot, only at shutdown (mountall error messages)

2011-10-16 Thread WarriorIng64
I was about to say that using

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash plymouth:debug=file:/var/log
/plymouth-debug.log

GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480

works too, without the plymouth:force-drm bit on the end.

I just saw your last comment and I will be trying that out next.
Unfortunately, I no longer have the cruddy Nintendo DSi camera I used to
get that picture of my monitor error the first time around, and neither
I nor my roommate have any cameras handy. In fact, I actually asked a
question on AskUbuntu just a while earlier on how to save the vbeinfo
output (http://askubuntu.com/questions/67236/is-there-a-way-to-save-the-
output-of-vbeinfo). I'll see what I can do in the meantime; if the
output's not too long I may just end up writing it down.

2011-10-16 Thread WarriorIng64
Okay, never mind on the camera bit. I just realized that I do have a
camera: my laptop webcam.

I was able to get this picture of vbeinfo on my desktop using Cheese,
after resetting grub to use GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 again. I think some of
the output at the top is cut off, and you can see black artifacts along
the edges of the screen. But at least I do have something to start with

I'll try some of these resolutions and see if I can't get anything
better.

[Bug 850895] Re: [nouveaufb] Plymouth refuses to show on boot, only at shutdown (mountall error messages)

2011-10-16 Thread WarriorIng64
I just tried the 1280x1024 resolution. It looks better resolution-wise,
but it's no longer centered onscreen, and instead is slightly off to the
left, leaving a black bar at the right edge.

Running vbeinfo in that resolution left no artifacts, but was still off-
center. It did produce the full output legibly, but I couldn't really
get a good enough picture with my laptop that would also be readable.
Instead, I typed up the beginning that was chopped off earlier into the
attached .txt, containing everything up to entry 0x106 (the first
readable entry in the earlier provided picture). So the vbeinfo output
is now complete.

I'll stop for now (it's going on 4am here and I need sleep). Let me know
if there's anything else you want me to try.

Just tried the third and last suggestion. Still nothing.

Looking back at what was posted on my AskUbuntu question, I'm going to
try setting GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 and see if I can at least get grub to
display. If that works, then from there I'll take a look at vbeinfo.

[Bug 850895] Re: [nouveaufb] Plymouth refuses to show on boot, only at shutdown (mountall error messages)

2011-10-15 Thread WarriorIng64
Okay, I've altered the following lines in my /etc/default/grub:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash plymouth:debug=file:/var/log
/plymouth-debug.log plymouth:force-drm

GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480

(I only use one monitor in my setup, btw, so I figured that option would
be safe to add.)

And lo and behold, it works! This is the first time I've seen my grub
menu and Plymouth during boot in quite a long time, albeit in a low
resolution. It's even centered onscreen, too! I guess this means I can
finally boot my Natty partition again (although Oneiric's quite nice and
I plan on sticking with that).

Please let me know if there's anything else you want me to do yet to
help get this bug actually fixed.

[Bug 632066] Re: systray.py crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_module_use()

2011-10-10 Thread WarriorIng64
I've been running hp-systray from a terminal since the last crash to try
and catch any error messages (couldn't get it to run from gdb), but it
did not crash since then. I've just killed that and now I'm running it
using the commands you provided above...so far everything seems okay,
but I cannot say for sure since I still have no idea how to reliably
reproduce this crash.

As for vlc, I don't have that installed, and being in the US I am
hesitant to install these types of things due to potential software
patent issues with the codecs.

Just got this crash as well, though I actually didn't notice it until I
had finished browsing some stuff with Firefox, then minimized it to see
the crash window.

[Bug 632066] Re: systray.py crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_module_use()

2011-10-06 Thread WarriorIng64
Just happened again in Oneiric Beta 2 while browsing wallpapers in
System Settings, causing my HPLIP tray icon to disappear. I'd say this
is probably the most common crash I'm seeing on my system now. hplip
version 3.11.7-1ubuntu3.

[Bug 841409] Re: GEdit is the only choise as Calendar application in Default Applications dialog

2011-10-04 Thread WarriorIng64
I can confirm this. I now do have Thunderbird with Lightning 1.0b7
installed and working, but it still won't show in Default Applications.
This seems like a regression from Natty where Evolution supported
calendars (including Google Calendar) right out of the box, while
Thunderbird needs a plugin manually installed by the user (two if you
want Google Calendar support, as in my case).

[Bug 835498] Re: Online Accounts doesn't seem to work

2011-10-02 Thread WarriorIng64
It's still not working for me. Just applied the latest updates and
rebooted, yet my address book in Thunderbird still only shows as
contacts the few people who I've been entering in my To fields manually.
Nothing from neither Google Contacts nor Ubuntu One contacts (although
the latter is probably because the contacts sync service has been
unavailable since August: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOne/Status).
