[Bug 704417] Re: Ogg Vorbis missing from Preferences - Preferred Format.

2011-01-27 Thread DaveG
'Preferred Format' has a list of the available formats Ogg is not one of
them but if I choose Edit then it appears (Ogg), but it still does not
appear in 'Preferred Format' so I have to choose something like MP3 or
.flac which I don't want and convert back to Ogg.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Nintendo Wifi USB Connector (Ralink rt2500) woes

2011-01-13 Thread daveg
 Hi all;

I have a Desktop PC here running Ubuntu 10.10, and I'm trying to
connect to my Wireless internet connection through a Nintendo Wifi USB
 connector (A re-branded Buffalo/Ralink rt2500 chipset). I know you can
connect to wireless networks with it, because I've given it to other
people to use as one, and they've done it just fine.

When I plug it into my desktop and turn it on, I click on the network
icon in the panel, and I can see all of the available wireless
networks, so I click on mine and i get the whole enter the password
stuff. Then, when it attempts to connect to the network, the icon gets
to the '2nd stage' (Where instead of going up and down, it goes just
 up), and then disconnects.

Any idea what this could be so I can at least try to fix it? I've
searched on google and such, and there doesn't seem to be this
 problem...

P.s: I've also tried the connector in other Ubuntu-powered PC's, and
 get the same result...

 Thanks!

You dont say whether every instance of your trying is using the same
update of Ubuntu - 10.10 but I'm guessing it may be.
It may be worth a shot disabling the current network manager and trying
wicd insead. I have just found it more accepting to various networks,
connectors and routers. You dont have a lot to lose by trying.

 Heya,

I'm having some issues with my parent's recently upgraded maverick
desktop and I wondered if anyone had any thoughts here.

The issue is that the ethernet connectivity appears to (in about 50% of
boots) bounce continuously giving the users no connectivity.

When the interface doesn't come up properly here are the results of:
 cat /var/log/syslog | grep e1000e
 http://pastebin.com/ctKj9HPX

FYI, a successful boot where looks like this; http://pastebin.com/L4c8YmPA

It's a Lenovo thinkcentre and is connected to a router right next to it
with a 0.5m length of Cat5 Ethernet. The router has other things hanging
off it and does not loose connectivity. The Ethernet cable has been
swapped out and switch ports have been changed. This hasn't made a
 difference.

I suspect the issue has only occurred since the upgrade to 10.10.

lspci -nn for the interface gives:
00:19.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation 82566DM Gigabit
 Network Connection [8086:104a] (rev 02)

 t...@vitalstatistix:~$ lsmod | grep e100
 e1000e151787 0

On a successful boot querying ethtool gives:

I know I've probably not really got enough data of it failing for people
to be able to help that much, what would be useful to include?

 Thanks in advance :)

 Tim

(Sorry to summon the hivemind, however I've been in bed for the past two
weeks with flu and you know how frustrating it is doing parental tech
support at the best of times!) :)

You could ditch NM and try WICD instead - I find it much more robust.

Suggest you read this archive post of mine. When I was having similar
difficulties I installed wicd as my network manager instead of the default
and all was fine. Did it in 10.04 and 10.10 also.

Perhaps its an issue with the nm-applet on that toolbar on my netbook.

Or its a problem with my eyesight :)

I'll rerun the installer to double check.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Disk Rescue!

2010-08-30 Thread daveg
I'll try to be sucinct as possible, but also explain as fully as I can.

Booting up, I get the grub menu. Choosing any of the 4ish(?) Ubuntu
choices (exept restore versions) results in hung system. Choosing XP
results in hung system. Choosing one of the restore options results in a
scrolling screen of text, so fast it is difficult to pause and read but I
do recall some bad messages relating to DMA. I can get to grub prompt but
I haven't much of a clue from here whether this is a good thing or not.

Portege does not have floppy drive - just DVD. However, I did try
re-installing XP but it hangs when it comes to trying doing anything with
the hard drive. Tried a number of live CDs again in an attempt to use
partitioning software to sort it all out, but to no avail. Even
attempting to delete partitions - it just hangs. Latest attempt was using
a live version of Gparted but again although it can see my partitions any
attempt to change them causes problems - its as if they are write
protected; but no feedback from tools says this.

I'm investigating whether I can repair the MBR - if in fact that is wrong.
Thought I'd found some utility to do this but it doesn't appear to be
part of any distro I have.

All very frustrating. As I say - any tips would be appreciated.

Not sure I understand what the problem is! Are you able to access the
disk at all? Do you get warnings, etc. when you try to boot? Do you have
an OS that can be booted from the disk? Not long ago, I munged up a dual
boot, and to get WinXP back, I had to use my rescue Disk, open a command
prompt and run fixmbr, which killed grub, but gave me back my XP.
Perhaps you need to do something similar?

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Disk Rescue!

2010-08-30 Thread daveg
Many thanks for the various pieces of advice.

Have just finished booting up an old WIN98 setup CD, using the F8 key
managed to get to a shell prompt where it had loaded a few utils into a
RAMDISK. FDISK /STATUS showed some partitions. Deleteing them appeared
to work, but then when trying to write a new partition it just hung again.
Re-booted and tried again. Similarly the status still showed the
partitions being there - even though I thought I had deleted them.
Realised, they were just marked for deletion and cos the new partition
hadn't worked they were still there. This time I deleted and then exited
from FDISK only to receive a disk write error.

All similar symptoms to other methods used so far.

Conclusion:- Either the disk is well and truly busted OR for reasons I
cannot explain or fix is that the MBR is opened read-only and it is busted
also.

Is'nt there some form of low-level utility which would merely zap the disk
with zeros or something regardless whether it has some form of protection
on it? I don't need the data and I don't need any software - I can
install o/s afterwards.

Lessons for others to learn: - if you haven't backed up your MDR and/or
taken an image of your disk and it is important to you - do it regularly
before it is too late.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] [SOLVED] Disk Rescue!

2010-08-30 Thread daveg
Many thanks to all for advice and interest.

In the end I managed to get to the Hitachi site and downloaded a great
utility that tested my disk. (Many thanks for the tip Anton) Based on
PC-DOS - now where have I heard of that before :) thats a rave from the
grave !

Ran the quick and advanced test and it reported all was fine with the disk
- not a thing wrong with it. But I new different, so as I was quite happy
to lose the lot I used its MBR repairer and it reported a 0x75 failure
Defective Device - Component Failure. So, I then used its disk formating
routine which was going to put zeros all over the disk and it reported the
same error.

Oh well! At least my sanity is restored! Second-hand disk ordered from
e-bay now on its way. Now looking for a lady with strong ear-lobes who
would like to wear it!

The listing from the restore on further examination talks about ata1:00:
failed command: WRITE DMA and lots of other meaningful(?) nasty stuff. I
had previoously tried it in a USB caddy - but no O/S around liked it and
it tended to hang my system.

Could have been worse - could have spent the day on a motorway or in an
airport lounge!

There are differences - but what do I need to do in 10.4 to make it work
like 9.04 live does? If its a driver issue I beg for some gentle hand
holding to put right. Seems to be some issues though about eth0 and eth1.
Is the wireless in 9.04 pretending to be a wired?

Please help.

2010-07-03 Thread daveg
Stand down all you guys attempting to help with my problem. All is now
solved. I took the easy way out, after a bit of internet reading. My
advice to anyone else suffering from not being able to get their internal
wireless card to work under 10.4 LTS is to do as follows:-
1. Via System Administration Synaptic Package Manager search for
Network Management Framework and mark the obvious ones for removal
2. Then apply. (but see health warning at 3 below first)
3. Don't worry, it should not lose your connection as such whether that
is via a hardwire interface or a USB Adaptor (can't vouch for the latter
though - I'm guessing). If you are feeling unlucky, then do step 4 below
before applying.
4. Still in Synaptic Package Manager search for wicd and mark all you see
for installation. You should be able to download the packages without
actually installing them if you chickened out at step 2 and 3 above. If
you went ahead then once all is finished you should be able to go to
Applications Internet Wicd Network Manager. You should see all your
interfaces - wired, inbuilt wifi card and probably any USB or even pcmcia
adapators. Just configure simply - decide your preference and connect.
Simple. Shutdown and the re-boot and all is well with the world! Now why
the heck wicd as the network manager is not part of 10.04 as the standard
as opposed to the offering, I simply do not know.
DaveG

A little update - but still need help. I have booted up live version of
9.04 and guess what - yes Wifi works out of the box with no problems.
Previously tried booting up 10.04 live cd but no such luck.

with 9.04 live the lshw -C Network output is as follows:-

There are differences - but what do I need to do in 10.4 to make it work
like 9.04 live does? If its a driver issue I beg for some gentle hand
holding to put right. Seems to be some issues though about eth0 and eth1.
Is the wireless in 9.04 pretending to be a wired?

 Please help.

 Hiya Dave
Have you checked the restricted drivers? You can also use lspci and
repost
to let us know what wifi card you have in there.

You may also want to re-title this, as google has declared it spam for
me...and not many people check there spam boxes

Hiya Dan and others

Message header changed following advice re potential spam.

Dont know what is meant by restricted drivers. My other post provided
lspci output revealing I think a
00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82557/8/9/0/1 Ethernet Pro

Google search results for this looked promising initially but have proved
to be many red herrings or unintelligible to me.

Here is output from ifconfig -a

Ignore the wlan0 entry - that refers to a USB wireless stick I had
knocking around - but needed elsewhere. I think its the eth1 I need to

 Hello Dave,
The first thing you can check is System Administration Hardware
 Drivers

With luck it should have picked up your wireless hardware and it will
 allow
you to activate the 3rd party driver that will make it work. Please note
that you will probably need to be connected to an Internet enabled
 network,
so lets hope you have a wired connection spare.

If there is nothing in the Hardware Drivers, then try issue the following
command in a terminal window, it should tell you what your wireless
 hardware
 is

 lspci

Try a google for: Ubuntu your wireless make model here, copied from the
 lspci output

Or post the output of lspci to the list if you dont get anywhere.

 Good luck.

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Sometimes Firefox profiles can become
corrupt and/or extensions can conflict. Could you please try this with a new
profile and see if the problem still exists? You do not need to delete your
old profile to test. If this helps, you might want to try to disable all your
extensions and re-enable them one by one until you find the problematic one.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] wacom bamboo

2009-06-15 Thread daveg
I mentioned in an earlier post that there was a reasonable article in the
July edition of LINUX Format covering a little about I think the sort of
problems you are experiencing. Editing the xorg.conf gets the erasure,
buttons and circular pad working. Also within GIMP
these features must be mapped to keystrokes which is done using wacompcpl
tool, included apparantly in the linuxwacom package or available at
http://linuxwacom.sourceforge.net

According to the article and the accompanying text file on the DVD the
following lines should be added to the ServerLayout section of the
xorg.conf file:

InputDevice stylus SendCoreEvents

InputDevice cursor SendCoreEvents

InputDevice eraser SendCoreEvents

InputDevice padSendCoreEvents

The following lines should be added to the end of xorg.conf file:

Section
InputDevice
 Driver wacom
 Identifier stylus
 Option Device /dev/input/wacom
 Option Type stylus
 Option USBon

EndSection

Section

EndSection

Section InputDevice

Above is what I am trying to play which doesn't play. No sound but says
it is loading, buffering then playing, starts to play sound then goes
silent as it is saying it's playing. Plus now some pictures are not
showing on some web pages.

[ubuntu-uk] The List

2009-02-10 Thread daveg
I have been a member of this list for 2 days. I have aslo subscribed to
my local linux list from the same source.
I am learning UBUNTU and LINUX. Almost 20 years ago I was a UNIX Systems
Administrator for about 2 years before embarkng on a database programming
career.
At a risk of being flamed, and with the greatest of respects, I am
disspointed by the sheer number of posts which are only distantly
connnected to UBUNTU. In the same timeframe I have had no linux posts.
I know e-mail lists can be a little unruly at times and it is so easy to
wander off topic. In my view there is a risk that members will be
alienated by the non-UBUNTU matters.
I'm glad I went for the daily digest - although am dissapointed that I get
4 or 5 digests per day.
